🎤 Citing Michael and Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jody Watley, and Whitney Houston as her primary influences, Selena found Black music aspirational, a standard to live up to and an origin to credit. Selena’s life cannot be portrayed without Blackness.

🎶 Selena’s love of Black disco, pop, and R&B was formative, but in the television version of her life, it is only ever depicted as a desire to “cross over,” a metaphor for the striving immigrant ready to assimilate—the American Dream.

How New Mexico quietly became a refugee state for trans people (lgbtqnation.com) And the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico is now a "trans Ellis Island." By Daniel Villarreal Wednesday, May 24, 2023

Over the last year, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah — four states bordering New Mexico — have all banned gender-affirming care for transgender youth. Meanwhile, New Mexico passed two laws ensuring that such care will remain legal statewide and that no government entities will ever help another state prosecute someone who obtains or provides that care.

As a result, New Mexico is quickly becoming a refugee state for those escaping their state’s anti-trans policies. That creates a unique challenge for the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico (TGRCNM). The Albuquerque-based center is the state’s only brick-and-mortar center run by trans people, for trans people.

“We’re geographically situated in between states that are struggling with treating people like human beings and allowing folks to have the bodily autonomy to take care of themselves in whatever way suits them best,” TGRCNM’s executive director T. Michael Trimm tells LGBTQ Nation. “So folks are fleeing here in droves.” [...]

[...] New Mexico’s laws mimic those of California, Minnesota, and other “sanctuary states” which promise to protect the right to gender-affirming healthcare for youth and their families. As a result, out-of-state immigrants have increasingly sought help at TGRCNM, turning the Center into a sort of “trans Ellis Island,” Trimm says, referring to the New York center in the early 1900s that processed European immigrants and refugees.The influx is challenging the TGRCNM to meet additional people’s needs in an already under-resourced state, Trimm adds....

[...] This year alone, New Mexico passed House Bill 207, which added gender identity to anti-discrimination and hate crime laws; House Bill 31, which made it easier for trans people to legally change their names; House Bill 7, which forbids anyone from restricting access to reproductive and gender-affirming health care; and Senate Bill 13 is a “shield law” that forbids the government from assisting with any out-of-state investigations into people who provide or receive such care. The latter two laws are especially important since Texas and other states have threatened to prosecute doctors and parents for “child abuse” if they help kids access such care. Similar laws also threaten anyone who assists in obtaining an abortion....

“We’re not doing something radically new by protecting trans people,” [Marshall Martinez, executive director of Equality New Mexico] says. “We’re doing what we’ve always done, which is protect people from hatred and discrimination because that’s a New Mexican value.”

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 112 minutes of ‘Akeelah and the Bee’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

Pixar has the market cornered with ‘family friendly animated films’ --- No one really has done that for live action ones. But if there is a formula to follow (or at least one approach to try)...it would be whatever Doug Atchison.

It’s well cast...written and executed. 15 years later...I’d still put it at a masterpiece level (8/10)

PS: Though the whole #MeToo discussion did make me uncomfortable with just Akeelah at Larabee’s house during my rewatch. But of course...I know there was none of that in this....I mean has Laurence Fishburne played questionable roles?

PPS: I just read Roger Ebert’s review of the film...and apparently the next on my queue is 1993's 'Searching for Bobby Fischer' . I remember watching it and moving on based on the impression I got (it was just a film that relied on melodrama --- about someone missing)...so...I will give it another go. Making sure that I hit ‘play’ when the conditions are optimal (while consuming a meal...or cooking something that takes 2 hours...maybe?)

LARABEE I apologise, Mrs. Anderson, if we've contributed to any anguish you may be feeling.

TANYA just holds her steely gaze.

TANYA And who are you exactly?

He takes a step.

LARABEE My name is Joshua Larabee, ma'am.

She looks him up and down. Determined not to let down her guard. She gives WELCH some side-eye.

LARABEE And I've been...Well I've been helping Akeela prepare herself for the spelling bee.

He glances at the entrant.

WELCH Akeela's been getting extra school credit for working with Dr. Larabee.

TANYA glances back at the principal, taken aback.

WELCH We designed an entire program specifically for her.

She turns back to her daughter and shakes her head.

TANYA Why didn't you tell me about this?

AKEELA Mama, I hated going behind your back. But every time I bought up the bee, you didn't want to hear it.

The mother's eyebrow shoots up. Is that sass, daughter?

AKEELA I didn't know what to do.

INT. USC (AUDITORIUM) - CONTINUOUS

JAVIER Can I get the pronunciation again?

He eyes the judges. Earnest. Innocent.

REGIONAL JUDGE He's given it to you 5 times. You need to speel the word.

Number 67 glances at the doors. No activity still.

JAVIER Could you use it in a sentence?

REGIONAL JUDGE He's already used it in a sentence.

JAVIER I mean, a different sentence than he used before?
