Backstage Right: A glimpse at Stage Management with Matt Knight
As we prepare for the final weekend of JCSTF’s production of Blithe Spirit, we caught up with our stage manager, Matt Knight!
Q: This is your first time stage managing a JCSTF mainstage production - how is it living up to any expectations that you may have had coming in?
Matt: Yes, this is my first mainstage as a stage manager. The process isn’t too surprising since I have been assistant stage manager for mainstage shows before, but it is a pretty big change in what I do. The process has been pretty much painless for me because I have the chance to work with a great production team and director.
Q: What would you say your greatest strength is as a stage manager? Greatest weakness?
Matt: My greatest strength as a stage manager is probably my ability to keep a level head and not get overwhelmed. Balancing a double major with a minor along with needing to communicate constantly with people is not easy all of the time, but it is completely manageable if you keep calm about it. I am not the most visually creative person, so I will never have a very pretty call board. Lots of people have made pretty call boards in the past, but I just favor having an efficient call board with the necessary information. Other than that, I suppose some people see me as soft spoken and don’t think I would be able to raise my voice when needed. I can, though I prefer not to.
Q: What has been the biggest challenge for you during your time on Blithe?
Matt: My greatest challenge has simply been getting an assistant stage manager late in the production process. It has just given me a bigger work load, so I have needed to spend extra time preparing everything before and after rehearsals.
Q: Give one piece of advice to an up-and-coming stage manager.
Matt: A stage manager should always remain calm and collected regardless of the situation. There are many things that can go wrong, from communication pre-production to something breaking in a run. The answer is always to calmly view what has happened, what needs to be done, and how to get it done most efficiently.
