'Nenad, Who Plays Ping Pong' is an Official Selection of the 2020 Mountainfilm Festival (@mountainfilm) • Nenad Bach is a world-class musician that decided to stop performing publicly five years after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2010. In the wake of his diagnosis he discovered that playing ping pong helped to alleviate his symptoms... Towards the end of 2019 I had the opportunity to go upstate with a group of friends and make a short film about Nenad, his eternal optimism and the important work he's doing. One of the biggest things that's stuck out to me about him (besides his wardrobe choices) is how he's been able to turn what would normally be deemed as a life-altering detriment, into an attribute - full of hope, determination and with the actual possibility of improving other people's' lives. He lives life on his own terms - not on his disease’s... Always Looking Up: The Adventures of An Incurable Optimist (2008) ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Always Looking Up is sometimes regarded as the sequel to Fox's beautiful memoir Lucky Man, but in truth, it is a standalone book, simply written by the same author. Always Looking Up is Fox's treaties on the power of optimism. Originally famous for his skills as a comic actor, who consistently appeared younger than his age, Fox is now famous for his work with the @michaeljfoxorg Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. He explains throughout the book that while life can be frustrating, being pessimistic does not improve the situation. He does not promote the idea that one can simply glide through life blissfully happy, but to look for the pleasures of life, the reasons to laugh, the good than can come from sadness. He refers to his youngest daughter, Esme, and her creativity; he uses his own life as examples for when to find the good - for instance, he describes how his own illness brought international awareness to a disease that was largely unknown by the majority of people. "The only unavailable choice was whether or not to have Parkinson's. Everything else is up to me." I strongly recommend this book, as it is inspiring and informative. It provides that pleasant boost most of us need to face the daily minutiae that bogs us down, and reminds to "play the Glad Game", as Pollyanna Whittier would say. While drawing on his life and experiences, Always Looking Up is not a memoir. It falls firmly into the category of Inspiration.
