V E R S A C E . Spring 97. Romantic flamenco ruffles, kaleidoscopic, neon prints, that iconic Heart print and of course the "Slip" dress in all its variations, this was Gianni's vision for his Spring 97 collection. The slip dress of course was huge during the mid to late 90s and Gianni's were some of the best! Colour blocked with asymmetrical hemlines, both floor length and mini, and varying necklines they were sexy and fresh, a new kind of Versace woman was emerging. The collection also featured sweet knitted cardigans and dresses and camisoles in spun black lace, as if crafted out of spider webs. My favourite outfit of the collection would have to be that empire waist, green floral gown, modelled by Carolyn Murphy. It is just breathtaking, simple and modern for that particular period in fashion. The campaign stared Amy Wesson and Kylie Bax, two of fashions newest faces, shot by Avedon in typical Avedon fashion. It was romantic and epic ( trademark for Galliano ) in presentation, feminine with fringing, lace and other exquisite fabrics, along with slip details, long strands of pearls and remnants of the Masai neck braces from his first Couture collection ( Fall 1997). The collection was matched with an equally exquisite set comprising of piano salon and boudoir. I miss the presentations like these, where there was a sense of drama, the supermodels taking on a different persona and bringing the clothes to life.
