The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - Greymouth

The next stop was an overnight at the largest town in the West Coast region - Greymouth, with a population of 8,400 at last count. The area was first settled in the 1300s, but in the early nineteenth century iwi from the East Coast of the island had conquered the area to control the supply of pounamu (New Zealand Greenstone).

The Grey River is one of the short steep rivers that originate in the Southern Alps, and has managed to break through the coastal range. The area is also somewhat notorious for the katabatic wind known The Barber that flows down the gorge and through town, frequent flooding thanks to all the storms that blow in off the Tasman and get stopped dead by the Alps, and the number of shipwrecks on the sandbar at the rivermouth.

We had a short stroll around the estuary at sunset, but I didn't get many usable photos. The arse of the Weka that disappeared into the undergrowth wasn't particularly photogenic either.

Zealandia vieillardii is a fern native to New Caledonia. There is a lot of rearranging of plant names these days. I assume this is based on DNA. This species is also known as Lecanopteris vieillardii and Microsorum vieillardii.

AKA mokimoki, Microsorum scandens (it's still Microsorum on iNaturalist), Drynaria scandens, Phymatodes pustulatum, Phymatodes scandens, Phymatosorus scandens and Polypodium scandens. 'scandens' means 'to climb'.

A climbing fern found in coastal and lowland parts of Australian and New Zaland, and some Pacific islands, but introduced to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Adult fronds are larger, thin, and divided, and as the common name suggests, pleasantly aromatic when crushed. They were used to mask unpleasant odours by the Māori.

Here's a fern.

Microsorum punctatum. Dragon's wing fern. I keep it in my bathroom under a grow light. I have a humidifier in my bedroom next door to keep it happy. It is one of thirty four ferns I have, only two of which are dying because I loved them too much (overwatered.)

I feel like I'd be much more popular on Tumblr dot com if I didn't have a baby keeping me from writing and my current hyperfixation wasn't, you know, ferns.

When I got this plant it absolutely refused to grow for me so I've been genuinely ignoring it. Now everytime I look at it, I realize that it's beginning to take off! It's actually put off a lot of new growth and bigger leaves (fronds?) and I'm very happy for her to finally be making progress! 😁
