Excavation Uncovers Very Rare 6th C. Iron Folding Chair
ARCHAEOLOGISTS HAVE UNCOVERED A “FOLDING CHAIR” FROM THE 7TH CENTURY AD DURING EXCAVATIONS IN THE VILLAGE OF ENDSEE, LOCATED IN MIDDLE FRANCONIA, GERMANY.
The chair was first discovered in 2022, deposited as a funerary offering in a burial from the early medieval period. The grave contained the remains of a woman aged 40-50-years-old, along with a necklace made of small multi-coloured glass beads, two brooches, an almandine disc brooch, a large millefiori bead, and a whorl.
In addition to the woman’s grave, the archaeologists also uncovered a man’s grave containing richly decorated weapons (lance, shield, spathe). According to the researchers, the graves are probably related to the Franconian influence of the Main and Tauber regions in the 6th and 7th centuries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now unveiled to the public at the “Archaeology in Bavaria” conference following a lengthy restoration process, the chair consists of two frames connected with an axle pin and is decorated with brass non-ferrous metal inlays. There are narrow slots on the horizontal struts, which were used to attach a seat likely made from animal fur (as indicated by mineralised organic remains).
Folding chairs deposited as grave goods are exceptionally rare. Within scholarly investigations they suggest that the deceased held a prominent position or occupied a higher social status. To date, there have been 29 instances of early medieval graves containing folding chairs discovered throughout Europe, with merely six of them being crafted from iron.
Prof. Mathias Pfeil, head of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation, said: “The extremely rare discovery of an early medieval iron folding chair in 2022 was already a sensation, but the fact that such details have been preserved after remaining in the ground for over 1,400 years was a surprise.”
“This find, which at first glance seems so modern, is an absolute rarity and of the highest cultural and historical interest, because it provides insight into the grave furnishings of prominent sections of the population,” added Prof Pfeil.

Maps are fun things. They help us visualize the world, not only our current surroundings but also those we are planning to explore. With our smartphones in hand, they aren’t as important in navigating as they once were but what they do for our imagination hasn’t been replaced yet. Open this interactive map in full Google Maps format and you can filter by Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, Lower Franconia, Franconian Baden-Württemberg and Upper Bavarian Franconia.

Another tag game and beautiful opportunity to ramble away (without seeming too impolite while doing so cause, well, they asked for it ;) 🖤
Vielen lieben Dank für die Einladung /
Thank you for the invite! @lullabyes22-blog
Are you named after anyone?
A french name my mum simply took a liking to, though my family has no connection to France besides living in Mid-Franconia (Bavaria, Germany). I was named after a student colleague of my mum, a tall blond woman with long wavey hair. Funny thing, I just turned out like that.
When was the last time you cried?
3 weeks ago after fainting at my ortho appointment [bad bike accident x bad concussion] - tears of relieve and exhaustion when a dear friend came to pick me up.
Do you have kids?
No, and so far I don't intend to have any.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Why deny oneself the joys of some witty word games and a great copying mechanism?
What's the first thing you notice about ppl?
Your style, your body language / facial expression and the way you express yourself/your voice. How you present yourself. How authentic you are in your presence. If there are certain qualities about you I resonate with.
What's your eye colour?
Colours, I guess. Blue-greenish grey, darker at the edges, transforming towards the middle into a bronze circle around the pupil.
(Story of opposites)
Scary movies or happy endings?
I have no sense for horror (there's enough senseless brutality in the real world) but I do enjoy some good old angst, trauma and characters dealing with a lot of mental challenges. Happy endings are very welcome though, a nice reward for all the suffering and growth (especially when you've suffered so much with them yourself).
Any special talents?
I would describe myself as a creative soul who finds self-expression, love and energy in art/making music/dancing! / style / design /makeup/ (voice) acting /writing.
Ah and I have very expressive eyebrow moves and can squint while one eye moving/rolling independently.
Where were you born?
Conservative countryside in Bavaria (South Germany).
Hobbies?
Current hobbies are singing,
voguing, twirling, twerking, dancing my heart out in the beautifully wild jungle that is the Berlin Club Culture (one of the main reasons why Zaun feels like home),
lifting some good weights in the gym, baking my own bread (very German I know), reading, trying to figure out digital art softwares
Pets?
Would love a cat, but would find it cruel to force her to live only indoors without some green fields and fresh wind in her face.
What Sport do you play / have played?
I used to do ballet (2 yrs), kick boxing (1 yr), and horse riding (11 yrs, miss it quite much tbh)
Atm Body building / gym , dancing
Really bad at all school sports though.
How tall are you?
175 cm
Fav subject in school?
Ethics/ Philosophie, Art
Dream job
That's the big question - still a student, first Philosophie now Politics / Social Science.
Could imagine myself in a NGO with the mindset of anti-rascism/pro LGBTQIA+/ pro postcolonial feminism.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber / Germany by zilverbat. Rothenburg ob der Tauber (German pronunciation: is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. It is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still have completely intact city walls, the other two being Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl, both also in Bavaria. Rothenburg was a free imperial city from the late Middle Ages to 1803. In 1884 Johann Friedrich (von) Hessing (1838–1918) built Wildbad Rothenburg o.d.T. 1884–1903. https://flic.kr/p/2ok3rkX

Spectacular Summits: Uncover Mount Wildcat, A Peak, South Carter, Liberty, and Garfield
Mount Wildcat, A Peak - Elevation: 4422 ft
Difficulty Level: Mount Wildcat, A Peak is a moderate - more difficult hike. If you refer to my January 15th blog post, you will note that this is a part of the Wildcat Ridge. This is a chance to… you guessed it… peak bag! Wildcat A through E peaks can be accessed via the Wildcat Ridge trail that I will link below. Please understand that only Wildcat A peak and Wildcat D peak are recognized as part of the NH 48 4,000 footers.
Trail: Wildcat, A Peak can be accessed via the Wildcat Ridge Trail (out and back). AllTrails link below:

South Carter Mountain - Elevation: 4430 ft
Difficulty Level: South Carter Mountain is another moderate - difficult hike. I am sure by now, a trend within my documentation of trails is becoming very apparent. The pattern being that peak bagging opportunities are common! South Carter is no different in this. This hike presents the chance to summit Middle Carter and Carter Dome (I will discuss these peaks in next week’s posts).
Trail: South Carter Mountain can be summited a few different ways. The most common trails are via Imp Face → Middle Carter → South Carter Mountain, and Carter Range Loop trail. Hikers can choose to complete the entire loop, or they can simply summit South Carter in an out and back fashion.

Mount Liberty - Elevation: 4459 ft
Difficulty Level: Mount Liberty is generally seen as a moderate hike. I have yet to summit this peak personally, but have only heard amazing things about it from my friends and family! Yet another peak bagging opportunity exists with this mountain. Mount Flume is 1.2 miles from the summit of Mount Liberty (as discussed previously).  Again, as these mountains are within the Franconia Range, I want to stress the importance of being prepared and knowing when to turn around. The weather in this particular area of the White Mountains can be fierce, and the terrain even more so. There is no shame in turning around if you feel it has become unsafe to summit.
Trail: The two most popular trails to summit Mount Liberty are the Liberty Spring trail (out and back), and the Liberty Spring → Franconia Ridge Trail (out and back). AllTrails links below:

Mount Garfield - Elevation: 4500 ft
Difficulty Level: Mount Garfield is considered an easy - moderate hike. Depending on a hiker’s stamina, the trek can seem difficult due to the length of the trail. It is a fairly level trail, with steep areas closer to the summit. I guarantee you that the 360 degree views from the summit will make this longer hike worth the work!
Trail: The most common trail to access the peak of Mount Garfield is the Mount Garfield Trail. AllTrails link below:

Toys at the recycling centre: pilot project in Upper Franconia
Tumblr media
Under the motto "Goodbye", toys of all kinds are collected and sorted according to specific criteria by an employee at the recycling centre in Neustadt near Coburg.
What to do with the broken doll? What about the knight's castle that has fallen into pieces? And the toy car that lost its wheels? So far, there have been no recycling solutions for toys. A project in Upper Franconia could change that.
A pilot project in Upper Franconia[1] is intended to show what recycling options there are for broken or discarded toys. Until now, toys have been disposed of with the residual waste, and only a few companies have offered to take their products back for recycling, says Cornelia Becker, sustainability expert at the German Association of the Toy Industry[2]. "There is no industry-wide solution yet."
In Neustadt near Coburg[3], people can currently dispose of unusable toys that would normally end up in the garbage can at the municipal recycling centre. The response so far has been very good, says Becker.
The plastics in toys in particular could often be recycled instead of ending up in the garbage. "Especially in the current situation, that would be a waste," emphasizes Becker. Usually no new toys are made from the material because the specifications are strict - but everyday objects are. "You can make a variety of products out of it."
The Neustadt-based toy company Heunec[4] and the disposal service provider Zentek[5] are also on board with the project, which is initially scheduled to run until at least the end of March.
According to Becker, the association wants to use the empirical values from the pilot project to examine what an industry-wide solution for toy recycling could look like. According to Becker, it is not possible to quantify how many toys currently end up in the residual waste, since residual waste is usually incinerated.
The topic of sustainability also plays an important role at the Toy Fair in Nuremberg[6], that began on Wednesday 1-02. Under the motto "toys go green" there is a special exhibition area for sustainable products and ideas.

15 Top Things to do during your stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber Germany
How about exploring the beautiful Village of Germany. Rothenberg is a beautiful village in Germany which could be reached from Frankfurt, Munich, Wurzberg and Nuremberg for a day trip. #frankurt #munich #wurzberg #nuremberg
Along the Romantic Road in Middle Franconia Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of those charming old towns that don’t appear to be real on first sight. For entry, you have to go through a defense system comprising over 40 towers, which remain the same as in the time that The King of Sweden and the Count of Tilly were there 400 years ago. They protect a picturesque town with plush patrician homes…
