Liam Grant — Amoskeag (Carbon/Feeding Tube)

The dedication on the back of Amoskeag reads, “For those who can no longer tell the old stories.” It suggests an attitude towards the past that manifests on each of the album’s six tunes. If Liam Grant had something to say about mid-20th century literary criticism, he might suggest that you take your copy of The Anxiety Of Influence and use it to stop a door that needs to stay open. He’s not paralyzed by the notion that all of the good ideas have already been stated. No, works of the past animate him, and he’s keen to return them the favor.

Amoskeag offers raga-inspired fantasias and old time-steeped invitations to kick up your hoofs, balancing winding reverie with convivial celebration. Which is not to say that Grant is a strict revivalist. Admittedly, Grant’s antecedents are easy to name. If you have spent some time tuned into the Takoma School guitar resurgence of the aughts, you’ll know that he’s working with a tumbler full of Jack Rose poured over the rocks of Glenn Jones, with some of their inspirations and successors stirred in to make a brew that is pungent, familiar and satisfying. The opener, “Stratton-Eustis,” has the same light out for parts unknown vibe as “Cross The North Fork,” and “Last Night On Dead River” sounds like a half-remembered rendition of “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” laid over “Sundogs.”

Not only does Amoskeag echo the sounds that Jack Rose drew from wood and wire, half the LP features the playing of Mike Gangloff, who played with Rose in Pelt and Black Twig Pickers. But Rose is over a decade gone, and there’s still a big hole that needs filling, so if Grant does that job for a while, let’s just say that he does a good job. And since he’s in his early 20s, it’s possible that the what he sounds like now is not where he’ll end up; consider how far Cian Nugent and Daniel Bachman have traveled from their first efforts. He might find some more personal stories of his own to add to the ones he recounts so well.

Writing for Magnet magazine in 2023, Bill Meyer described the solo music of fiddler Mike Gangloff as "augmented Appalachia" - droney meditations that weave improvisation, melodic composition, and traditional airs. A founder of Pelt, Black Twig Pickers and Eight Point Star, Gangloff has begun performing unaccompanied sets with a hardanger-style violin equipped with sympathetic strings or an octave fiddle that shifts the sound down to cello territory. His newest releases are the album "Evening Measures," released in 2022 by VHF Records, and a 7-inch shared with New England guitarist Liam Grant that came out on the Sound-o-Mat label earlier this year. A collaboration with US exploratory guitar masters Elkhorn is due out later in 2023.

Over the last decade, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions. Shifting away from the electric guitar of his most recent solo activities, he’s currently exploring the uses of an amplified archtop guitar, exploiting the instrument’s potential for placing intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs and the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation.

Pelt - For Michael Hannahs

Bandcamp Monday!!!! Pelt, the long-running avant-Appalachia collective, has begun adding some excellent stuff to Bandcamp recently -- including this previously impossible to come by tour CDR from the late 1990s, featuring Mike Gangloff, Patrick Best and Jack Rose (plus a few other friends and neighbors) droning up a storm. "CDR that was cooked up for sale on Pelt's extensive 1998 US Tour. A fine blend of mostly acoustic (banjo, tamboura, guitar, violin) droners with a few folky touches in there for good measure.” Awesome sounds. And hey, Pelt lives on to this day, thank gawd -- check out a recent performance at Café OTO  in London.

Black Twig Pickers - Friend’s Peace

Gooooooooooooooood Morning Gamerrrssssssss. Bill Pepsi returns to the essentials report like a phoenix from the ashes, reborn after a long year of (non-music) writing, clad in new releases for you to check out. The first one comes by way of Virginia-based experimental label VHF, mainstays of the drone, freefolk, now old New Weird America scene of the 90s. To a slightly wider audience, the Black Twig Pickers are probably best known as the old-time focused side project of Pelt member Mike Gangloff and Spiral Joy Band’s Nathan Bowles, who are joined by their usual compatriots Sally Anne Morgan and Isak Howell. At first glance, Friend’s Peace seems to be about as far away from experimentation as humanly possible, but hints and flourishes of the avant-garde linger just underneath the surface. Both the traditional tunes and the original country compositions are underlied by the more modernist sensibilities of the Twigs; long sustaining fiddle interplay, droning bass tones, even sruti box and singing bowls pop up from time to time. But at its core, Friend’s Peace is still a country album that celebrates the glacial development of one America’s great cultural heritages. It is the sound of a living artform, developed through community and transmission from one artist to the next. I think that’s a swell thing to celebrate given the isolation we’ve all lived in over the past year. Best listened to in a backyard with housemates and freshly cracked beer.

Tanz Mein Herz - Quattro

Our next pick ties in well with the first one in that it reflects on a thankfully resurgent school of music that combines the world’s traditional folk music styles with the modern avant-garde. This time, however, our entry comes all the way across the Atlantic, from the French side of the Occitan cultural region. There’s not much information about them on the internet, but as far as I can tell, Tanz Mein Herz is a working group of five or six Occitan musicians (most of whom have their own solo or side projects, including Sourdure, La Novia, Toad, etc.) playing in a mixed ensemble of modern and traditional instruments. This is about where the verifiable information on the band ends, so you’ll have to forgive me for engaging in some of my patented vibe science from here on out. This double LP clocks in at juuuust over an hour and a half, but it’s far from what you might call monolithic. Circular patterns of hurdy gurdy and cabrette (Occitan bagpipe) playfully dance over slow pulsing bass and drum grooves in the same way that the heart and lungs beat and pound, circulating air through the body. Looking outside of their own scene, the most apt comparison might be France’s own drone-folk pioneers, Natural Snow Buildings, though Tanz Mein Herz’s integration of French traditional folk runs deeper than Natural Snow Buildings’, whose folk leanings always worked in service of the noise and drone rather than the other way around. Tanz Mein Herz’s, on the other hand, seem to work towards reformulating the tamed post-war styles of France into a new style that combines the roots and instrumentation of peasant folk tradition with the grooving trance philosophy of Eastern Europe and West Asia. Best listened to in a situation where the grooves can work their way into your subconscious.

Pavel Milyakov & Bendik Giske - Untitled 

The untitled album by Pavel Milyakov and Bendik Giske was released on Smalltown Supersound on March 26th. Milyakov is a Moscow-based artist known for releasing ambient, abstract music as well as experimental techno under the name Buttechno. Giske is a Norwegian artist and saxophonist whose critically acclaimed debut album Surrender was released in 2019. Together they have created a highly intricate and versatile album. This album makes me want to march down my street making my man-bones click like a pair of kitten heels. That is the most accurate way I can describe this album. I’m watching the sunset listening to “Untitled 1” as I am typing this. You could try doing that too, or you could do something else. By the time I reach “Untitled 5” I expect to have painted my entire body white and my teeth black. Soon I should be writhing around in the dirt under my trampoline as the sky turns dark. Listen to this album to step your cookies up before they crumble.

Merzbow & Prurient - Black Crows Cyborg

Ok Noise fans, it’s finally happened! We have a collaboration album between Merzbow and Prurient!. These two giants of the global noise scene, while beginning to decline in their solo releases, have brought out the best in each other in their first ever collaboration record Black Crows Cyborg. The contributions each of them bring to the project are apparent in the opening moments of “Part I: City Barbarism Melancholy”. One side of the texture is the low, ominous synth chords that are familiar to fans of Frozen Niagra Falls, while low-mid dynamic noise bursts that are no doubt Akita Masami’s contribution. This texture slowly grows in dynamics and intensity across the 16 minute length of this track. It is a nice change of pace to hear something with Merzbow’s name on it with some dynamic variety! While “Part I” was melancholic, “Part II: Cylinders Raven” is what all good noise is - relentless. Gone is dynamic variety in favor for extreme, noise wall textures that both of these musicians have perfected over hundreds of releases. Also, this album is about cyborg crows that cover the skies of Tokyo and New York to create doom for all of those trapped inside.

Marking the 10 year anniversary of the passing of American guitarist Jack Rose, Tompkins Square presents: Ten Years Gone ...an album of original instrumentals made as tribute to Jack by a few of his friends (Mike Gangloff, Sir Richard Bishop, Helena Espvall, Buck Curran, Micah Blue Smaldone, Nick Schillace) and by a group of emerging artists inspired by his music (Andy McLeod, Simone Romei, Matt Sowell, Joseph Allred, Prana Crafter, Paolo Laboule Novellino, Mariano Rodriguez). The music represented here continues forth the craft and tradition of American acoustic music...which Jack Rose so mightily and prodigiously expanded on during the first decade of the 21st century. Curated by Buck Curran (of the psych folk duo Arborea), Ten Years Gone is a tribute to a dear friend and musician who left this plane of existence far too soon, but whose music is carried forth in deep currents of spirit and memory and lives on in an ever evolving heritage of solo acoustic guitar playing around the world.

Joseph Decosimo — While You Were Slumbering (Sleepy Cat)

While You Were Slumbering by Joseph Decosimo

Joseph Decosimo takes his bluegrass neat. A champion banjo player and a blue-ribbon winning fiddler, he knows the genre in and out. And yet unlike many of the young guns—Jake Xerxes Fussell, Daniel Bachman, Sam Amidon, Mike Gangloff and others—he seems to not be in any hurry to update or invert or, in general, fuck with the old stuff. It is what it is. He delivers it with precision and liveliness and a soft burnished depth, but mostly without gimmicks.

Decosimo infuses stately old ballads with a sprightly lilt, inhabiting the juncture between wild cavorting, dancing joy and stoic fortitude. These songs acknowledge the way that life will break your body and heart, but also find reason to frolic. The song “Trouble” gets at traditional music’s resilience in the couplet, “Trouble, trouble, there’s trouble all around/But lord, lord trouble can’t last always.”

Decosimo’s arrangements are spare and rich at the same time, paring songs down to the bone then cushioning them with subtle harmonies, breathy drones of pump organ and fiddle. A plaintive melody is preserved in amber-glinting sustained tones in opener “The Fox Chase.” “Young Rapoleon”’s bright melody is shadowed by barely-there aspirations on clarinet.

This is an artist who wins contests for his old-timey skills, so it’s no surprise that the instrumental interludes are expertly played. “The Lost Gander” tamps the banjo down to ghostly traces, its rapid flurries of notes curling like smoke and disembodied spirits. “Possum Up a Gum Stump” gives Decosimo and his fiddle free reign in a light-footed reel that is nonetheless shot through with melancholy.

Decosimo is good enough to hobnob with the best. Alice Gerrard, the near 90-year-old bluegrass hall of famer sings throatily on two cuts, “Shady Grove” and “Apple Brandy.” Gerrard started singing the old songs in the 1960s with Hazel Dickens. She brushes up against Decosimo in the harmonies, her rough edges finding consonance with his; she definitely doesn’t have a young woman’s voice, but there’s something in the grain of it that suggests endurance and joy amid the obstacles. And that, finally, may explain the considerable appeal of While You Were Slumbering. Its songs recognize life’s difficulties without surrendering to them. They’re old but strong and ornery and they’ll brace you right up when things get tough.

From author Nick Soulsby: For “We Sing A New Language: The Oral Discography Of Thurston Moore”, I wanted to use the experiences and perspectives of the people who have played on the numerous records he’s featured on outside of Sonic Youth, to paint a picture of his development and his interests in music across the years. It’s notable how much of his energies, very early on, were on gaining this wider experience while – since the mid-Nineties – there’s a veritable explosion of effort devoted to other scenes which then feeds back into Sonic Youth in the form of the SYR records, releases with Mats Gustafsson, the presence of Borbetomagus on the Murray Street album, their choices of support acts when touring. There’s even a specific character to Moore’s efforts during Sonic Youth’s peak of commercial success in the early-to-mid-Nineties with Moore evangelising and paying tribute to the underground bands who he felt was important – so much of that era is spend on covers and tributes. It’s that kind of pattern that speaking to the people involved was able to tease out.

The book includes a comprehensive Contributors section in which each of the 170 people involved summarises their personal creative urges and expressions – the hope being that it gives the reader a sense of who they’re speaking to and a starting point for further exploration. Frankly, if you enjoy the work of Thurston Moore then there are a lot of people in here worth finding!

Jon Camp

A lovely collection of guitar reveries for your Bandcamp Monday this week. Maryland-based musician Jon Camp's self-titled album is breezy and bright, guitar blending harmoniously with pedal steel, mandolin, tuba, bits of percussion and the always gorgeous fiddle of Pelt's Mike Gangloff. The songs are miniatures, springing up, blossoming beautifully and then fading away. The relatively epic "Iffy Strut" and "17 Years" are the exceptions, but even those never overstay their welcome. Camp isn't a flashy player — his fingerpicking on both acoustic and electric sounds intuitive and natural, as though these compositions were conjured up on the spot.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”

The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.

“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”

The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.

The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.

This Pebble Beach Concours also raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities.

Celebrity guests who were in attendance included comedian Jay Leno, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, media personality and former defensive end for the New York Giants Michael Strahan, actor Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”

The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.

“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”

The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.

1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer Named Best of Show at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Just a week ago, Bruce R. McCaw’s 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer emerged from the restoration shop of Steve Babinsky in Lebanon, New Jersey. Today, having crossed the country, the boattailed beauty captured the top prize at the prestigious 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“This Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Somehow these three elements—along with those fantastic torpedo running boards—become the very definition of elegance.”

The car, a sporting tourer, was first delivered to a Captain Miller on behalf of Earl Howe, who founded the British Racing Drivers’ Club.

“We’ve had the car for several years,” said McCaw, of Bellevue, Washington. “The question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn’t need it. But we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.”

The car retains its original Marchal lighting equipment and chrome-plated wheels; these are complemented by low-cut doors and unusual torpedo-style running boards containing tools and other ancillary equipment. The rich blue color was a dress inspired by a dress made of peacock feathers in the 1850s.

In the final circle, Bruce was up against his brother John McCaw who, with wife Gwen McCaw, competed for Best of Show with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder. Also in the Winner’s Circle was a 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by William E. (Chip) Connor of Reno, Nevada.

The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, drew 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states—and the total included 54 first-time entrants.

This Pebble Beach Concours also raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit over 80 local charities.

Celebrity guests who were in attendance included comedian Jay Leno, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, media personality and former defensive end for the New York Giants Michael Strahan, actor Jerry Seinfeld, and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar John Lasseter.
