Walking into the hall, Sixty looked around. Over the years, he had become familiar with most of the people there, even Allen’s mum had become a regular character in his life. Still, it was a little overwhelming to have so many people crowded into one area, Sixty clutched at the faded red wall in his mind like a safety blanket. He’d brought the required gift, a bottle of good quality wine and a practical back rest for Allen’s office chair. While he didn’t complain as such about it, the stifled sighs, groans and holding of his back gave away his unfortunate predicament. Though good lumbar support might just solve that.
A roar went up and Sixty’s analysis program kicked in, identifying everyone in the room, assessing threat levels and stress levels. On the whole, everyone looked to be in good spirits.

Sixty took that as incentive to gift him his presents.

Perhaps his research had been wrong when he’d looked up novel ways of wishing someone a happy birthday, he hadn’t wanted to be run of the mill. If the spluttering was anything to go by, he might have made a faux pas. Clinging to the red wall, Sixty reassured himself that it was okay.
“Thanks, Sixty,” Allen took the bag and stood up to give him a hug. “You going to join in with this parade of humiliation. The teenage years are just coming up.”
On his other side, his Mum simply beamed and patted the chair, encouraging them to sit. Social protocols dictated that Sixty join them so he did. The pictures were accompanied by a soundtrack of reactions from the captive audience. More laughter at the ‘goth’ phase, some “aaaw’-ing from the picture of Allen crashed out and fast asleep from his Academy days and a whole host of other pictures of his successes and moments worth remembering through the years. One thing was painfully obvious, the changes and development, an arc of a life that Sixty had the privilege of witnessing only a fraction of.
The more recent pictures were some that he remembered being taken. There were even a few he was in or had taken himself. Not having to pay so much attention, Sixty could get lost in his own thoughts. His mind turned to the anniversary of his own activation day. Over the years, it had never been a big event, only a couple of people even knew about it. Truth be told, it wasn’t a day he thought back to fondly and he rubbed at his forehead thanks to the memory.
“You okay?” Allen nudged him, looking over in concern. He had been one of the few to make his activation day commemoration a pleasant experience. Each year, there was either a new tie or a special coin on his desk along with a subtle card. On those days,there was also a mysterious flask of thirium in a new flavour in the fridge with Sixty’s name on it.
“I am fine.” It was the truth. Sixty was fine. At the same time, he couldn’t help but think that he’d just turned six. Thinking back at the pictures of Allen in the first six years of his life, he’d changed so much. And there were so many pictures. In contrast, there was barely any of Sixty except maybe as an accidental background figure in other people’s celebrations. “There is a lot of photographic evidence of your life.”
He didn’t expect a nod and a contemplative look from Allen. That never boded well and sure enough, the next moment, a phone was in Allen’s hand, pointed at them.
“Say cheese,” he grinned and Sixty stared at the camera as a pair of wet lips pressed a kiss to his cheek. The shutter went off and blinded him momentarily. “Mum, stick this on the end of the slideshow, would you?”
Blinking again, Sixty cleared the overload from his optical sensors and stared at Allen. As faded as his old red wall was, it felt especially flimsy.
“What was that about?”
“Wanted a picture of me with my best friend. Perhaps it’s one you might want to include in your own slideshow when the time comes.” He pinged the picture over to Sixty.
The whole of Sixty’s HUD was taken up by the photo, he analysed it over and over again. On each pass, the red wall faded even further until it was just a mirage, something he himself imagined to be in place out of habit. There was no wall there, the coding worn down with time, eroded by conflicting data.
“It might even be the first picture I use.” He offered Allen a tentative smile. “The last few minutes of being a machine before growing into a deviant.”
The blinding grin Allen offered him was brighter than the flash of any camera. Even as one went off from beside them, Allen’s Mum cooing over it. The next moment, it was up on the screen and both Sixty and Allen glanced at the picture and blushed. It might have been to best friends grinning at each other but it just as well could have been two people realising they were in love.

Rumination, recumbency and pH monitoring are being used to the benefit of the farmer to detect metabolic disorders such as subacute ruminal acidosis and infrared thermography has the ability to detect subtle changes in body temperature, indicating a departure from good health. This can be particularly useful in the detection of diseases such as mastitis, which costs the US dairy industry an estimated $2 billion annually, or about 11% of total U.S. milk production quite apart from the great concern in terms of animal welfare. A study of infrared thermography on dairy farms [1] (Figure 1) showed a significant relationship between udder surface skin temperature and somatic cell count in collected milk samples. Sensitivity and specificity in the classification of udder health were: 78.6% and 77.9%, respectively [2]. These may seem relatively low but given the ease of imaging udders versus obtaining somatic cell counts, they are an excellent start in evaluating udder health.
Where else might we see an increase in temperature in inflamed tissue? Ompahilitis in newborn calves is a significant health issue One recent study showed the maximum temperature of the lateral umbilical region in calves aged less than 30 days to be 35.7 ±1.8°C in a control group of calves and 37.0±1.1°C in the omphalitis group this being significantly different at p = 0.002 [3]. Given the low cost of handheld non-contact thermal imagers this would be a very valuable tool for diagnosis by the farmer of umbilical infection in young calves.
Lameness is a common affliction in dairy herds and is responsible for 10.4% of all dairy cows culled in the UK [4]. The cost of replacements is high and therefore early detection of the condition is critical so that swift treatment and resolution can occur. This not only has positive welfare benefits for the animal but saves the farmer direct costs associated with culling and the indirect costs associated with rearing a replacement heifer. Thermography to detect hoof lesions associated with lameness by measuring the changes in coronary band and hoof skin surface temperature can be really valuable (Figure 2) [5]. Perhaps more helpful is digital technology detecting changes in locomotion. Accelerometers (Figure 3) can readily detect changes in locomotion significantly earlier than simple human observation shows a lameness to be developing [6] and software packages such as Cow-Gait have been developed to monitor locomotion [7]. But as Alsaaod and colleagues have noted [8] technology to detect lameness and develop algorithms in evaluating locomotor data is widely discussed but we have very few papers documenting decisions over when to act in individual animals with subclinical lameness.
Accurate estrus detection too is critical to a dairy enterprise. Visual assessment is not always reliable, bulling cows are easily missed when not being directly observed and each unnoticed estrus period results in a 21-day extension to an animal’s calving interval. The advent of modern technology allows signs of oestrus to be recorded and alerts sent to the farmer or technician performing artificial insemination (AI), along with a time that is best to serve the cow, resulting in increased conception rates. Similarly, detection of calving is equally important should the animal need assistance as the loss of a calf due to avoidable circumstances is particularly disappointing. Accelerometers attached to head collars (Figure 4) determine movements of the head rather than the whole animal and these systems such as SMARTBOW have been shown to detect behaviours associated with estrus [9]. Thermography can be a useful tool also – in one study nine anatomical locations (vulva area, tail head, muzzle, front feet, rump, cheek, neck, and withers) but not eye or flank exhibited an increase in radiated temperature during the last 48 h before estrus [10].
Dealing with Data
The amount of information obtained from a set of monitoring devices from thermal imaging, movement detection, ruminal boluses and so on can be large to the extent of being completely unmanagemeable. Deviation had become a bit of a fashionable thing. There were various outlets that specialised in making the moment special and memorable with suitable kitschy junk sold alongside it as a memento. One such place was a theme park where rides were designed to elicit deviation through exhilaration rather than distress. It only seemed logical to Hank and Gavin that they take Connor and Nines there for their special moments.
As soon as they were through the gates, Gavin was looking at the map and pointed with a smug grin at a ride.
“This one,” he announced and nobody dared disagree.
The line to The Deviator was thankfully not too long. But it was enough for the humans to watch with horrified anticipation as the carts were pulled up a shallow incline, followed the track along the gentle curve of a u-turn and stopped just before a sheer drop that descended into a hole in the ground. Each time, the cart stopped just on the curve of the drop so the occupants could appreciate how far they were going to drop, face down.
“I hope you like heights,” Gavin grumbled as they shuffled down the line.
He and Hank shared a look just as they got in, realisation sinking in that it wasn’t just the androids who were about to live through the ride but them too. The slow trip up to the top of the track was deceptively slow and gentle, cheery music played from speakers but Gavin clutched at the harness holding him in with sweaty hands. Next to him, Hank didn’t seem to be faring any better as he mumbled curses under his breath. To make things even more unfair, either side of them Nines and Connor looked utterly nonplussed. If anything, Connor looked charmed by the whole thing.
Perhaps they shouldn’t have sat in the front row, Gavin mused as they got to the top. He closed his eyes as they approached the drop. The cart tilted and stopped, just like they’d seen it do while they waited. Seconds ticked by and nothing happened. It was taking too long, Gavin cracked his eyes open, worried that the ride had broken down and they were stuck. As soon as his eyes opened, the cart gave a sickening lurch and they were in free fall. He didn’t even have the time to take a breath to scream while next to him Hank grunted out a very heartfelt “motherfucker” that the wind whipped away. Gavin could only agree.
On jellied legs, Gavin stumbled from the ride and clutched onto Hank who seemed equally unsteady on his feet. Next to them, both Nines and Connor looked infuriatingly unruffled by the whole thing.
“That was quite pleasant, the wind speed was almost as pleasant against my sensors as your hand stroking through my hair,” Connor observed.
“It was certainly an experience, may we repeat it for further analysis?” Nines agreed.
Without waiting for an agreement, the two androids trotted off to join the line again while Gavin and Hank was forced to trot after them on shaking legs.
“I have an idea,” Gavin muttered before they caught up.
From his pocket he pulled a load of nuts, washers and bolts. Gleefully, Hank took a couple of them and stuffed them into his pocket with a wink.
They queued again, watched how most androids that came off the ride had awed, wide smiles as they took the world in around them with renewed wonder. A quiet jealousy swelled in Gavin as he watched, he wanted to see that look on Nines’ face, wanted to be looked at with that kind of open adoration. No doubt Hank wanted the same from Connor.
There wasn’t an eager anticipation in either Connor or Nines as they got it. Merely a quiet contentment and polite interest as they let the padded harnesses descend over their head which was the same air they had when entering a crime scene.
Despite knowing what to expect and knowing they’d already lived through it once, Gavin still felt a tight coldness seeping through his veins as they climbed the ascent to the still cheery music. At the top, he pried cramping fingers from their death grip on the harness and subtly reached into his pocket before turning to Nines’ seat with a frown. The cart stopped as they faced the hole in the ground.
“Hey,” Gavin nudged Nines and held his palm up as he heard Hank get Connor’s attention too. “These came out from your seat.”
Nines looked over at his palm and tried to scan the parts as the ride launched over the drop. From Hank’s other side, Gavin heard a static filled screech that lasted all the way to the bottom where the ride slowed down.
“Oh my fucking rA9! Fuck! Shit! Screw you Hank! You know where you can shove those bloody nuts and bolts!” Connor was spitting curses while Hank could barely gasp out a “no, where?” between chuckles.
Unfortunately, Nines looked as unruffled as before as he gave Gavin an unamused look.
“My processors were able to analyse the components fast enough to know they did not come from my seat. That was a very childish and dangerous prank to attempt. If you hadn’t kept your fist closed around them, they could have caused heavy injury to those behind us.”
Suitably chastised, Gavin watched as Nines approached Connor to congratulate him on his deviation. Of course, Hank had to buy a photo from the ride, Connor’s eyes and mouth wide open, hair whipping in the wind while Hank’s face was creased up in a terrified grin next to him.
Deeming that ride a failure, they explore other rides the amusement park had to offer. The Deviation Boat was an old banana boat coloured red like the walls androids had to break through. They sat in one end, Connor, Hank and Gavin whooping with their hands in the air while Nines looked nonplussed and stoic in the picture they inevitably bought.
Walking through the park, Gavin wasn’t jealous that Connor tucked himself under Hank’s arm, took delight in feeding him candyfloss while Nines merely licked experimentally at his thirium blue one, all but ignoring Gavin and his pink cloud on a stick that made a mess of his face.
The Horse Tornado (merry-go-round) was a hit with Connor as he bobbed around at a gentle speed and waved each time he passed Hank and Gavin while Nines stared at his plastic horse with a slight frown.
Ride after ride, Connor cheered and giggled with Hank while Gavin tried not to sulk as Nines looked unperturbed after everything they threw at him. It was an absolute failure and Gavin was quietly resigning himself to having a machine partner for as long as they worked together. It was okay, he could keep his feelings to himself and wouldn’t feel any resentment or bitterness towards Hank for getting Connor just the way Gavin wanted Nines. Who was he kidding? He was green with envy and barely keeping his tongue still with cutting barbs.
“I want to go on the spinning teacups,” he announced as they walked past them.
Anything to muddle his mind with nausea and dizziness rather than the thoughts running through his head. He hopped on the ride with Nines and watched Hank and Connor settle in a neighbouring cup. The ride started, Connor all but giggled as they began to gently spin. It was sickening and Gavin twisted the central plate to viciously spin them.
The faster they went, the more the thoughts flew from his mind as Gavin tried to keep them spinning and not keel over. Next to him, Nines was eerily silent and still. It wasn’t fair and Gavin turned the plate again in a sickening lurch.
“Gavin, stop,” Nines’ voice was quiet and his hands tried to reach for the spinning plate but missed.
Instantly, Gavin slowed them and as luck would have it, the ride came to an end not a moment later. They got off the ride and Nines staggered.
“My gyroscopes are malfunctioning,” Nines whined and he pressed a hand to his stomach as Gavin watched from where he leaned against the railing.
He wanted to help Nines, he really did but his legs weren’t steady enough and his vision swam. Somewhere to his side, Hank was snickering and Connor hummed with gleeful interest, obviously unwilling to help.
“I’ve got it,” Connor mumbled and Hank snickered.
“I’ll get it too.”
Whatever they were doing, Gavin ignored when he watched Nines gracelessly plop down onto the dusty ground. He stumbled over and offered a hand to Nines who stared up at him with wide eyes, like it was the first time he’d seen Gavin.
“Oh,” he whispered even as he swayed where he sat.
It took him two attempts to grab the offered hand, but rather than use it to pull himself up, he pulled Gavin closer, enough to get his other hand in his hair and pull him down for a kiss.
Around them, people clapped and whooped. Someone yelled “congratulations” but neither of them paid much attention. When Nines was done pressing his tongue in Gavin’s mouth with enthusiasm, they picked themselves off the ground and looked a little sheepish at such a public display.
Despite his gyroscopes settling, Nines took a firm hold of Gavin and offered him a warm smile along with a whisper of “is this okay?” low in his ear. In reply, Gavin wrapped his arm around Nines’ waist ans squeezed.
“Well, it’ no official photo but...” Hank held out his phone to Gavin to scroll through the series of pictures he took while Connor transferred the video he recorded to Gavin’s phone and to Nines as well. One of the pictures, Gavin made a note to print out, it was of Nines staring up at him with an open expression while Gavin himself looked down at him like a love struck fool. It was a photo that ended up on their fridge and each morning Gavin grabbed the milk, he smiled softly at the memory.

Sensors and AI are finding their way into the barnyard

LIKE ELITE athletes, dairy cows have exacting nutritional requirements. “If you’re slightly up on protein, or down on carbs, you’ll see a drop in milk production,” says Robbie Walker, the boss of Keenan Systems, an Irish firm which makes feed-mixing wagons.
For that reason, the firm’s latest products have gone digital. With the help of Intel, a big American chipmaker, Keenan has developed a computer that can be attached to its wagons. Every day the firm’s nutritionists load the computer with the herd’s dietary requirements. Sensors on the wagon weigh what the farmer puts into the mixer and compare it with what the recipe calls for. “It’s a bit like making a cake,” says Mr Walker. “Even if you’re being careful, you usually put in a little too much of one ingredient, or not enough of another.”

The collected data are transmitted over the mobile-phone network to the nutritionists, who can analyse any deviations from the ideal in what the animals were fed. A big deviation triggers a text message to the farmer. Smaller ones are noted, and the feed mix for the following day tweaked to correct any nutritional deficits that might have crept in.
Keenan is not the only firm trying to computerise cattle-farming. Cainthus, another Irish company, is one of several startups hoping to use computer vision to boost farmyard productivity. It uses cameras to track cows in barns and fields, relying on machine learning to analyse the images. The technology is sensitive enough, says David Hunt, the firm’s boss, to track individual animals, and to alert farmers if a cow is not feeding when it should be, or moving in a way that suggests it might be sick.
For now, he says, the company is working mainly on Friesian and Holstein cows, whose distinctive markings “mean they’re basically walking QR codes”, though he hopes to expand to other breeds eventually. The technology works well enough to have persuaded Cargill, an agriculture-focused conglomerate and America’s largest private company, to take a minority stake in Cainthus in 2018.
An alternative approach is to put the sensors inside the cows themselves. An Austrian firm called smaXtec has developed a sensor that can be swallowed. It lodges inside the reticulum, one of a cow’s four stomachs, and stays there for the rest of the animal’s life, monitoring body temperature, movement and stomach acidity, and uploading the results when the cow is near a wireless detector.
When fed to machine-learning algorithms, says Stefan Rosenkranz, smaXtec’s co-founder, those data can be used for all kinds of things. They can detect when animals are in heat, and spot the early signs of calving up to 15 hours before it happens. They can identify diseases several days before they become obvious to human observers, allowing early treatment and a 15-30% drop in antibiotic use. A new sensor, due out next year, will add the ability to monitor digestion. Sales are doubling every year, says Mr Rosenkranz. And with 278m dairy cows in the world, there is no shortage of customers.

Cutting the risks of premature birth
Infants born early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy, have a higher risk of dying in childhood and often suffer from lifelong health problems. But two novel devices could help cut this risk – one by improving how risk of an early birth is assessed and the other by offering personalised nutritional advice for premature babies.
About 500,000 babies are born prematurely in Europe every year and numbers are increasing. This is due to the fact that today more women suffer from obesity and diabetes, and that women are having babies later in life as well as to the rise in multiple births due to fertility treatments.
These babies are at greater risk of developing short and long-term health problems, including respiratory illnesses, learning disabilities and movement disorders such as cerebral palsy. Furthermore, complications related to preterm birth are the leading cause of death worldwide for children under 5 years old.
However, preterm births could be reduced by improving how pregnant women are screened, allowing for early interventions if they are high risk. For example, taking supplements of the hormone progesterone or stitching the cervix until close to birth can delay an early delivery.
Currently, transvaginal ultrasound is widely used for predicting the risk of premature birth. It allows doctors to measure the length of the cervix – a cylindrical piece of tissue that connects the uterus and the vagina – which acts as a protective barrier during pregnancy. It’s normal for the cervix to shorten as the time for delivery approaches. But during the second trimester of pregnancy, the idea is that the shorter the cervix, the higher the risk of premature birth.
Cervical length measurement isn’t always a reliable indicator though as some women at risk are missed. ‘Out of 10 women who will be delivering preterm, only four are correctly identified,’ said Laura Bernardi, product manager at a company called Pregnolia in Schlieren, Switzerland. ‘The remaining six are not identified and will not be treated to prolong the (pregnancy).’
Stiffness 
Cervical stiffness could provide an alternative indicator of preterm birth. Studies have shown that women with a softer cervix are at greater risk of going into labour early. ‘Imagine the uterus (as a balloon) and the cervix as a knot,’ said Bernardi. ‘If this knot is very soft, the baby is more likely to go through the cervix, resulting in birth.’
One study has shown that eight out of ten women at risk of giving birth early could be identified using this method, suggesting that it could be a more effective screening method than cervical length.
Pregnolia has developed a device, called the Pregnolia System, that is capable of measuring cervical stiffness. Originating from the PhD work of CEO Dr Sabrina Badir, it’s made up of a probe that is inserted into the vagina until it touches the cervix. Then a tiny pump pulls a sample of cervical tissue into the tip of the probe. In less than a minute, the device displays the negative pressure, which is directly proportional to the stiffness. ‘The higher the stiffness, the higher the vacuum required and vice versa,’ said Bernardi.

The team is now working on reducing the manufacturing cost as part of a project called Pregnolia. They are redesigning the disposable part of the device by using plastic moulding techniques such as extrusion and injection moulding. ‘These techniques allow us to reduce production costs by simplifying the design so that we minimise the amount of material used and simplify the assembly,’ said Bernardi.
Their goal is also to develop a commercial device that can be used to diagnose preterm birth. At present, the system generates a measurement of cervical stiffness that a doctor can compare with a stiffness value at the same stage of pregnancy for women who have had full-term births using a chart. However, it doesn’t give a diagnosis.
Members of the team are now conducting a human trial that should lead to the development of a diagnostic device. They are aiming to recruit 1000 pregnant women for tests at UZ Leuven (a university hospital in Belgium) and 12 hospitals in Switzerland where they will measure cervical stiffness using the Pregnolia device mid-pregnancy and investigate how their measurements relate to an early or timely delivery.
‘We expect results from our study in about one year,’ said Bernardi. ‘Then, we will be much more confident about giving an accuracy concerning the diagnosis.’
Bernardi and her colleagues expect their device to initially be used by doctors in hospitals and clinics. But it could also be used by nurses and midwives. Since it is portable and only requires a gynaecological chair for the examination, it could eventually be used outside a clinical setting. ‘Theoretically, nothing is preventing a midwife from going to the home of a patient and doing the measurement there,’ said Bernardi. ‘The main advantage is that we have results in a few seconds or minutes and a doctor can directly start therapy.’
Nutrition
Where premature birth can’t be prevented, it’s vital that preemies receive adequate nutrition to help prevent health problems. Babies born early often don’t get all the nutrients they need from breast milk alone as it provides less protein, fat and carbohydrates than they would get through the placenta if they were still in the womb.
‘When we have a very premature baby, nutrition (from breast milk) is not enough so it has to be fortified,’ said Isabel Correa, founder and CEO of a company called PREEMIE based in London, UK.
Currently, preterm infants are often given breast milk with standard fortification in hospital neonatal units. Doctors typically give babies urine tests to gauge if the supplementation is suitable. But since it isn’t tailored to individual needs or to the specific human milk used, there is a risk of under- or over-fortifying or the milk, which could have side effects including renal failure or predisposing the child for obesity.
Correa and her colleagues are developing a system to test the nutritional content of the mother’s milk in a few seconds and calculate the fortification required based on a baby’s needs. It can measure how much protein, fat, lactose and oligosaccharides – complex sugars – are found in breast milk – as well as freshness, or the age of the milk in days.
‘We are working towards enabling neonatal ICU (intensive care unit) professionals to perform a quick and reliable analysis of a small amount of breast milk, thus providing better individualised fortification for preterm babies,’ said Professor Enrico Bertino, a professor and director of the Neonatal Care Unit at the University of Turin in Italy, who is involved with a study of the Preemie device.
Milk banks
The goal is to develop an instrument that can be used in hospitals as well as in human milk banks. In Europe, women can donate excess breast milk to these services. The milk is given to babies or preemies whose mothers cannot breastfeed. But there is currently no cheap and easy way to test the milk they receive. ‘We offer a fast way to test human milk received in a milk bank for spoilage and freshness as well as nutritional value,’ said Correa.
So far, the team has a working prototype that uses Bluetooth to connect to a dedicated app on a smartphone or tablet. Two drops of breast milk are placed in a tiny container and inserted into the device where it is scanned by a sensor and analysed using artificial intelligence. The milk’s nutritional content and freshness is displayed, then, using information about a baby such as its weight, fortification is recommended based on European guidelines. This can be tweaked by a doctor if necessary, says Correa.
Professor Bertino and his colleagues have started trials to validate the prototype in order to get medical certification. They recently started collecting milk from a milk bank and from preemie mothers at Sant’Anna Hospital in Turin with the goal of obtaining at least 350 samples. Tests will validate how the system and sensor assess the content of different nutrients.
Correa and her colleagues are now working on commercialising the device as part of a project, also called Preemie. Once it is medically certified, which should be next year, the team hopes it will start being used in hospital neonatal units across Europe. Eventually, they hope to make it available worldwide, where it could be used outside of hospitals too. ‘Down the line, we could be in a situation where the mothers (with the advice of doctors) could actually do the fortification at home,’ said Correa.
