While it's on my mind, I think the reason why Millennium Actress is my favorite Kon movie is because the film itself is a love letter to fanship.

Take Perfect Blue, where fanship is depicted as either a distorting, malignant obsession, or merely the starting state before society's eventual cruel indifference. Memania is deadly, and Mimarin's fans almost equally so; at least in the callous way they speak of her "death" as an idol. Paprika briefly touches on fanship, representing the titular character as the "woman of your dreams", but the subject takes a backseat.

However, when Kyoji and especially Genya are immersed into the world of Chiyoko Fujiwara's works in Millennium Actress, fanship is met with perhaps one of the best outcomes possible - complete appreciation and reciprocation. One of my favorite cuts is where Chiyoko and Genya are visually snapped back to reality, but the two of them are still passionately renacting a scene. Genya's elation (and his tears), is contagious to the viewer; such is the power of loving a piece of media. Genya and Chiyoko go on a thrilling adventure through the world of cinema, and it's through the sheer joy and passion of this journey that Chiyoko and the audience understand that yes; what you "really love is the chase".

To watch, to adore, to feel - that is fanship. And that is what I really love about Millennium Actress.

En un mundo donde el espectáculo parece ser la cima inalcanzable, el sueño hecho realidad donde todos te miran y por fin destacas, pero en este gran sueño muy pocas veces se contempla lo que realmente implica ser el foco de atención, ver más allá de alcanzar esa meta y descubrir que no es el final de tu lucha, sino el comienzo, un comienzo en donde sale a la luz todas esas cosas desagradables y duras que no se cuentan, olvidan que todos estos idols también son personas normales que quieren vivir una buena vida.

Para empezar, los dibujos bastante detallados y bien animados al estilo de los 80s son impresionantes y esa sería una de las cosas que rescataría de la película.

Mimarin es una chica hermosa con un gran talento, pero que carece de carácter, en un mundo donde lo único que se te obliga a ser, es obedecer, a seguir órdenes, a ser un ejemplo, a seguir, a ser perfecta, a ser una marioneta en donde su voz, su verdadera voz, no es escuchada, incluso en su habitación (Un lugar recurrente e importante) se nota con detalles lo que se puede decir de una idol adorada y con miles de pensamientos y cosas en mente que al mismo tiempo mantiene ese toque suyo de lo rosa y tierno que perderá poco a poco.

Mima busca seguir adaptándose a la industria siguiendo los deseos de las personas "superiores", que por sobre ella, pero esto le trae serias consecuencias, mucha gente cree que ha fallado, que ha dejado de ser ella misma y es aquí donde un fanatismo peligroso se presenta llegando a afectar la seguridad de Mima y los que la rodean, ahora es mucho más observada de lo que siempre había sido, ya no solo se trata de presentarse frente al público o antes las cámaras, ahora la poca vida privada que le quedaba también ha sido invadida, ahora el temor la persigue, está siendo acosada, su carrera como nueva actriz parece no avanzar mientras su anterior grupo de idols parece estar triunfando, piensa en si hizo lo correcto y ahora irá en contra de todos sus principios para seguir en su carrera, realizar una escena de violación que le abrirá los ojos y marcará la ruptura con su antigua yo, realmente una escena bastante difícil de digerir, Mima muestra completo dolor y sufrimiento aun si es actuado, las miradas de todos, los gritos, las luces, las cámaras, se ha roto esa antigua imagen suya y al mismo tiempo el film se torna más oscuro, se ha dejado influenciar por sus superiores dejando atrás sus deseos, se siente "manchada" como si su pureza se hubiera ido después de ser fotografiada y exhibida desnuda, cree haber perdido su identidad y la ficción

en su serie televisiva muestra ahora su realidad, es un reflejo o una representación de su vida actual, el sueño y la realidad se confunden hasta un punto en el que ya no sabe que es real y que no, su pasado la persigue y la atormenta. Conforme el filme avanza, ahora no es la idol (representación de su antigua identidad) quien la persigue, sino que Mima es quien persigue a su antiguo yo como una muestra de aferrarse a lo que fue y convencerse de

que sigue siendo la misma.

Finalmente, Mima se enfrenta cara a cara a su acosador y es casi violada nuevamente, a diferencia de que esta sí es la realidad, o al menos eso parece, ya que para Mima le resulta imposible reconocer la diferencia, poco después descubre a Yumi, quien ayudaba a dirigir su carrera fingiendo ser la verdadera Mima y al mismo tiempo tratando de asesinarla para eliminarla de su camino, es decir, eliminar a la impostora en una bastante buena escena de persecución donde el reflejo, que es la vista del mismo ser, es un detalle importante, incluso el movimiento acelerado y brusco refleja la misma ansiedad y miedo de la protagonista gritando por ayuda.

Mima, tras verse acorralada y creer ver su reflejo por última vez, se reconoce a si misma, se acepta y reconoce ser real, ha encontrado su identidad y la sombra de su pasado reflejada en Yumi es perdonada.

La Vie en Rose 2023 - Movie 1 - Perfect Blue (1997, dir. Satoshi Kon)

I like everything I've seen from Kon, and this is no exception!

I really like the way Kon's work deals with unreality, especially in its visual style. I think it's easy to highlight the way this movie contrasts with Millennium Actress, as Perfect Blue focusing more on the question keeps the audience disoriented at the same pace as Mima.

I found the divide between the "true self" and the "marketable self"- between Mima and Mimarin, if you will- being at least partly technological somewhat prescient in an interesting way. It just made me think of the way social media turns us all into entertainers, the users are the product, and the way a Personal Brand can get away from you. Obviously, I'm not saying the movie Predicted that or anything, it was just what was on my mind as enough people believed in a "real" Mimarin enough that Mima became afraid of who was more real.

The end of the movie falls a little flat, in my opinion. Not enough to ruin the experience or anything of the sort, but i feel like it answers too many questions and wraps things up a little too neatly. Outside the text, I understand that certain characters are to embody or reflect other characters' fears and anxieties, but to have it be nearly text brought me down a little bit.

Overall: it's a movie that's basically as good as everything you've heard about it! It's earned its praise- but boy you really should heed those content warnings.
