Sweet Home: Bukan Hanya Sekadar Monster

Netflix baru saja meluncurkan drama korea baru adaptasi dari Webtoon populer dengan judul yang sama. Webtoonnya sendiri telah dibaca sebanyak 500 juta kali. Sejak perilisannya tanggal 18 Desember lalu, Sweet Home sendiri telah menduduki peringkat satu drama korea Netflix yang paling banyak ditonton di 8 negara. Selain itu drama ini juga digadang-gadang menjadi drama Korea Netflix yang paling mahal dengan biaya produksi lebih dari 30 Milyar Won atau sekitar Rp 385 Milyar.

Sweet Home sendiri bercerita tentang sekelompok orang di rusun kumuh dan tua bernama Green Home yang bertahan hidup dari serangan monster. Tidak seperti drama pada umumnya, Sweet Home memiliki banyak tokoh di dalam ceritanya. Dibuka oleh Cha Hyunsu (Song Kang) merupakan pelajar putus asa yang baru pindah ke rusun Green Home, Ia berencana merusak dirinya sebelum melakukan bunuh diri. Lalu ada gangster misterius yang menyimpan dendam masa lalu Pyeon Sang-Wook (Lee Jin-wook). Lee Si Young memerankan pemadam kebakaran perempuan bernama Seo Yi-kyung yang tangguh nan kuat. Selanjutnya ada sosok pria yang memiliki pembawaan tenang dan menjadi pemimpin penyintas rusun Green Home yaitu Lee Eun-hyeok (Lee Dong Hyun). Lee Eun Hyuk memiliki adik dengan kepribadian brutal dan merupakan mantan penari balet yaitu Lee Eun-yu (Go Min Si).

Terdapat dua sejoli yang kehadiran cukup mencuri perhatian penonton sejak di awal episode yaitu Yoon Ji Su seorang perempuan yang menyukai musik dan memiliki kepribadian bebas (Park Gyu-young) dan Jung Jae-heon (Kim Nam-he) seorang guru bahasa Korea dan penganut Kristen yang taat yang awal mulanya bertemu secara canggung di lift namun berujung saling suka satu sama lain. Pasangan berikutnya adalah seorang kakek dan perawatnya yaitu Park Yu-ri (Ko Yoon-jung) dan An Gil-seob (Kim Kap-soo).

Monster Cerminan Bayangan Gelap dari Diri Manusia

Diceritakan bahwa Cha Yunsu terinfeksi menjadi monster. Rupanya orang yang mudah terinfeksi biasanya memiliki masa lalu yang kelam di masa lalu seperti halnya Hyunsu. Monster tersebut mampu menguasai jiwa seseorang dan jika bagi yang sudah terinfeksi, seseorang tersebut harus dapat melaluinya dengan perang batin. Proses monsterisasi ini mengingatkan dengan cerita Demian yang ditulis oleh Herman Hesse.

Di dalam novel tersebut dijelaskan bahwa di manusia memiliki beberapa lapisan yaitu persona, shadow/bayangan, dan ego. Persona adalah berbagai macam kepribadian seseorang, shadow adalah hal gelap dari manusia yang disembunyikan oleh tiap individu, sedangkan ego adalah alasan yang dimiliki oleh seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu. Unsur yang disoroti oleh Sweet Home adalah shadow atau hal gelap dari manusia yang selalu disembunyikan. Orang-orang yang terinfeksi menjadi monster akan berubah menjadi bayangan tergelap dalam sesuai yang ada di pikirannya.

Kritik Sosial Lewat Masa Lalu Tiap Karakter

Bagian menarik dari drama korea genre apapun selalu dapat menyajikan kritik sosial melalui dialog antar tokoh. Dimulai dari tokoh utama atau Cha Hyunsu adalah korban Bullying semasa sekolah. Dirinya kerap kali dipukuli oleh teman-temannya. Orang tua Hyunsu mengetahui bahwa anaknya dibully di sekolah tetapi mereka tidak melakukan apa-apa karena pelaku bully adalah anak dari atasan orang tua Hyunsu.

Akibat bullying yang dialami Hyunsu, kepribadian Hyunsu berubah total. Ia menjadi tidak semangat menjalani hidup, selalu murung, dan tidak mengurus dirinya dengan baik.

Selain cerita mengenai Hyunsu, di dalam drama ini juga digambarkan bahwasannya untuk bertahan hidup manusia rela melakukan apa saja dan juga menjadi egois. Terlihat dari pemilik toko yang tidak ingin membagikan makanannya kepada para penghuni rusun. Juga kekerasan rumah tangga yang harus dilewati oleh istri pemilik toko. Sang suami kerap memukulinya dan mengeluarkan kata-kata kasar kepada sang istri. Selain itu juga kekasih Jisu yang meninggal dunia karena bunuh diri. Beberapa contoh diatas merupakan masalah sosial yang dihadapi masyarakat Korea yang masih sering dijumpai.

Para Tokoh Pencuri Perhatian

Terdapat beberapa tokoh yang mencuri perhatian netizen. Pertama adalah Jung Jae Heon, dirinya adalah sosok penganut Kristen yang kuat. Sebelum menjadi seorang penganut Kristen yang kuat, dirinya adalah seorang alkoholik. Menjadi seorang penganut Kristen yang kuat, dirinya kerap menguatkan para penghuni rusun untuk tidak menyerah dan tetap bertahan. Dirinya juga kerap memberikan nasehat-nasehat yang berhubungan dengan ketuhanan tanpa terkesan menghakimi.

Contohnya saja ketika sedang berbicara dengan Pyeon Sang-Wook seorang gangster yang ditakuti rusun Green Home, Jae Heon berbicara dengan tenang dan berkata “Tuhan tidak akan membebani hamba-Nya diluar batas kemampuan. Tetapi Tuhan terkadang menaruh harapan yang terlalu tinggi terhadap setiap Hamba-Nya”. Penonton juga sangat menyukai chemistry Jae Heon dengan Ji Su. Walaupun Ji Su terlihat seperti seseorang yang tidak mengenal Tuhan tetapi Jae Heon menaruh hati kepada Ji Su karena kepribadiannya yang tangguh dan peduli terhadap sesama.

Selain Jae Heon, tokoh-tokoh perempuan yang ada di drama ini digambarkan kuat nan tangguh dan terkesan lebih pemberani daripada laki-laki yang ada di rusun. Misalnya saja Yi Kyung yang merupakan seorang pemadam kebakaran yang terlihat tidak takut terhadap apapun, ataupun Eun-yu yang berani mengumpat kepada bapak-bapak pemilik toko karena telah menyakiti istrinya dan bersikap egois. Sedangkan Yu-Ri seseorang perawat yang tidak hanya memiliki kemampuan merawat orang-orang tetapi juga memiliki kemampuan memanah. Dan Jisu digambarkan sebagai perempuan yang memiliki kepribadian bebas dan memiliki jiwa yang tangguh.

Itulah hal menarik yang dari drama Sweet Home yang tayang di Netflix.

'The Dinner' (2013) review: Korean cinema at its best

Korean independent film director Kim Dong Hyun returned in 2013 after a six-year absence with “The Dinner,” a low-budget drama that managed the impressive feat of being shot for less than $100,000. (You can tell that every dollar was put up on the screen too.) Whereas Kim’s 2005 debut “A Shark” and “Hello, Stranger” from 2007 tended to revolve around outsider figures, here he goes for the opposite approach, focusing on the many hardships faced by an everyday modern family. Despite it being a low-key production, for its premiere, the film was given the prestigious closing slot of the 2013 Busan International Film Festival. The film opens with a woman called Kyung Jin (Lee Eun Joo) arguing with the father of her newborn child, who has since left her and who threatens to have the baby put up for adoption if left in his care. A few years later, the boy, Jae Hyeon is now being looked after by Kyung Jin with the help of her elderly parents (Kim Su Bok and Baek Nak Sun), aided by her older and younger brothers In Cheol (TV actor Jung Eui Gap) and In Ho (Jeon Kwang Jin). The family doesn’t have things easy, and struggle to get by financially, especially after In Cheol loses his job, which also causes trouble for him when it comes to looking after his sickly wife Hye Jeong (Park Se Jin, “Choked”). In Ho has problems of his own, trying to pay off his student debts by working as a driver while supporting his fiancée Min Jeong (Han Song I). With “The Dinner,” Kim Dong Hyun seems to have been heavily influenced by Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda, aiming for the same kind of down to earth family portrait, albeit with a somewhat darker and more depressing tone. It certainly doesn’t make for cheerful viewing, being filled with economic suffering, illness, arguments, child custody battles and tragedy, charting the downfall of an average group of essentially decent and likeable people due to forces beyond their control and despite their best efforts to keep themselves afloat. It’s a humanistic offering, Kim making a real effort to explore and engage his sympathetic characters, and the film relies for the most part on quietly borne pain rather than histrionics, with the solutions to problems being sought through dramatic rather than violent conflict. The accomplished script keeps things grounded, and though there are a few clichés thrown in here and there (In Cheol’s doomed dream of opening a restaurant and his wife’s unspecified illness, for example), Kim achieves a high degree of believability, making the film involving and affecting. The understated performances also help, all the cast being convincing in their generally well-written parts, Jung Eui Gap, in particular, impressing in what gradually emerges as the closest thing the film has to a central role. At the same time, it’s understandable that “The Dinner” might not be for everyone, as it’s very much an indie film, and frequently crosses the line between being subtle and obtuse, especially when it comes to the ending. Similarly, it’s a fairly slow moving piece of cinema, clocking in at a rather long 125 minutes and mostly made up of scenes of dialogue and misery. Things do pick up around the end of the second act when disaster strikes, and this adds tension to the final third, though even then Kim resolutely avoids anything too melodramatic, giving the film a very different feel to most films of its type. There’s a definite sense of stillness to the proceedings as a whole, and it’s a patient affair, with pale, grey colors that reflect the quiet desperation of its characters. For those who enjoy Korean indie cinema though, “The Dinner” is one of the better films of 2013, even if it’s not exactly easy or fun viewing. Deliberately paced and unflinching in its exploration of the disintegration of an unfortunate family, it sees Kim Dong Hyun continuing his run as a director worth watching and as a skilled commentator on the human condition. THE K2 REVIEW

Nutshell Summary: The K2 is a 2016 kdrama about a former soldier who sees a Presidential candidate in a compromising position. This makes him a target. The Presidential candidate’s wife orders him eliminated. He turns the tables and gains leverage over the candidate’s wife. Following the adage, keep your enemies close, he is hired to be a bodyguard to the Presidential candidates’ daughter. His focus becomes two fold – seek revenge for the murder of his former finance by the rival candidate and protect the daughter. Along the way he fascinates the Presidential candidate’s wife, becomes a love interest for the Presidential candidate’s daughter, and learns to reach beyond his lone wolf mantra.

Nutshell Pluses:

1. Compelling powerful woman. Watching a world ruled by men can be boring. Spicing it up with a powerful woman that men fear and want to destroy was a wonderful change of pace. 2. Loner hero that fought with his fists and brains, but cared with his heart. A cold hearted hero creates distance, but this warm hearted hero drew you in. 3. Instrumental tracks of the OST. These tracks set the tone for many of the scenes and were hauntingly lovely.

Nutshell Minuses:

1. Marginalized leading man. I watched this series because Ji Chang Wook was the leading man. But the writer, Jang Hyeok Rin, downplayed the leading man in favor the leading lady. I relish strong women all day long, but balance is equally important. This imbalance between lead characters also happened in Young Pal (review), the series that Writer Jang wrote before The K2. 2. Puppy dog romance with limited reasons why our couple got together. Proximity and our hero’s need to save a damsel in distress drew him to her. She responded with a school girl crush that evolved into a mutual sweet relationship. They had cute moments but this pairing seemed junior compared to the rest of the story. 3. The story and production was good but not great. This could be said about the majority of kdramas out there. So why am I flagging this? Because the unrealized potential was obvious. The story had gaps and missed opportunities to make the characters and plot even richer. The producer (Kwak Jung Hwan from the stellar series Chuno) lingered too long on romantic moments and bashed our hero to bits during the fight scenes.

Do I recommend this series? Yes. I enjoyed this show. I enjoyed the fights. I enjoyed the powerful woman that made men cower. I enjoyed the hero with a heart.

The umbrella scene embodies everything great about this series. A fight with a nod to the iconic single shot fight scene of Oldboy, our hero Je Ha rescuing Yoo Jin not only physically (by extracting her from a menacing situation) but also mentally (by giving her kindness and “chin up” support). Swoon!!! My favorite instrumental song of the OST “Anemone” (track 20) underscores the latter part of this compelling scene.

The Characters that worked for me.

1. Kim Je Ha (Ji Chang Wook) our hero with a kind heart and iron fists. I watch the shows that Ji Chang Wook graces. He has “that something” that draws me in. A smile, a bit of self depreciation, a controlled presence that has undertones of even greater strengths you can’t see, etc. In short, I’m a fan. His character, Je Ha was the lone wolf that evolved. He found his most compelling relationship was not with his love interest. Ji Chang Wook’s chemistry with Song Yoon A could not be denied. 2. Choi Yoo Jin (Song Yoon A) the fascinating powerful woman that ruled the men in her orbit and lusted after our hero. Her desire for Je Ha was evident and why not? He protected her, he treated her with compassion, and he went against her when he didn’t agree with her. Theirs was probably the most normal relationship she had ever had. 3. Agent So (Lee Soon Won), Je Ha’s first line supervisor, who initially loathed Je Ha’s loan wolf ways. He learned that Je Ha was the best member of the team and worth supporting. I went fan girl on the moments Agent So (aka my honey) was on screen.

Characters that missed the mark

1. Anna aka Ko An Na (Yoona), the damsel in distress, who was manipulated by everyone and had limited power. 2. Assemblyman Park (Kim Kap Soo), the ever smiling laughing opponent that had Je Ha’s finance killed and sought to win the Presidential election by hook or crook.

Best Fight of The K2. I can’t help myself, I’ve got to include the best fight scene of the series. Check out the superb first fight scene where Je Ha saves Anna from being captured in the Barcelona Spain subway.

SINOPSIS Drama Pegasus Market : Drama “Cheap Cheonrima Mart” menceritakan tentang karyawan ‘Pegasus Market’, yang merupakan sebiah toko yang sangat besar di kota Bonghwa, Provinsi Gyeonggi.

Moon Suk-Goo yang diperankan oleh Lee Dong-Hwi bekerja sebagai manajer di Cheonrima Mart, milik Grup Daema. Masa depan Cheonrima Mart tampak suram karena mereka tidak memiliki banyak pelanggan dan Moon Suk-Goo frustrasi dengan situasi toko.

Suatu hari, Jung Bok-Dong diperankan oleh Kim Byung-Chul, yang adalah seorang eksekutif di Cheonrima Group, diturunkan jabatannya menjadi CEO di Cheonrima Mart. Manajer Moon Suk-Goo mulai memiliki harapan bahwa toko akan mengalami perubahan haluan dengan CEO baru.
