Trying to judge Kakashi for his teaching fuck-ups is hard because everything keeps getting skewed by everything that is wrong with this man and also everything around him. He ends up being graded on the triple wonky curves of: 1) "You know, I'm not sure that you specifically could have done much better." (Child soldier as a preschooler, isolated genius prodigy fast-tracked out of childhood, violently orphaned twice, war veteran, late teenage years and nearly half his life spent in black ops, he's only like 26 years old, etc...)

2) "I'm not sure that the average Konoha ninja could have really done much better in Kakashi's shoes." (Inconsistent prior Academy training for students, little to no apparent teacher training or solid child development resources for genin team teachers, inconsistent oversight from neglectful superiors, promotion exams where it's apparently normal-ish for participants to be either killed or permanently injured, etc...)

3) "I don't think anyone could have handled this situation well, honestly. It was fucked up before Kakashi showed up." (Sasuke.) (Also Naruto if his personality had been slightly different, after 12 years of neglect and shunning. What the fuck.)

the other thing i have been rotating is a minato/mikoto affair fic. it's an AU where minato survives the kyuubi attack but kushina doesn't. so, minato ends up a single dad in an extreme state of grief. he's a "i can do everything!!" person and he really desperately wants to raise naruto without hiring help because he sees that as giving up and obviously he can't do that to kushina's son???

and mikoto is like. oh my god you stupid man. let me help u.

there's some political tension because, as in canon, minato low-key thinks the masked man is madara and so a lot of higher ups are like "not the UCHIHA" and fugaku low-key wants coup because he thinks it's only a matter of time before minato also turns on them. and mikoto is caught in between and she's SO sick of how both the vllage and her husband keep twisting what it means to be loyal to her clan, but she genuinely wants to help minato bc they're FRIENDS and kushina promised her naruto and sasuke would grow up together. and like, yes, the way i write mikoto, she definitely has some ulterior motives where she wants minato's political power on her side, but she didn't count on him being so charming and kind and handsome--

second shoutout to that one guy that mumbled to himself the whole time scanning our items before seeing my cat persona protagonists stickers before solemnly saying "... persona...... FURsona." and then exclusively referring to makoto/minato as jesus as he bought all of the neopersona protagonists while my poor friend who was manning the booth and had little knowledge about the persona series needed to decode what the hell he was saying

If they had to have parallels with anyone, Naruto would be Orochimaru and Sakumo (monster and failure you're called and so monster and failure you are. you sand down your sharp edges because not even home is safe for your true smile.)

Sakura would be Anko and Minato (there is something wrong with you. you're so angry, and you're so good at hiding it. you're so angry, and you're so horrible about hiding it. there are expectations and stories built up around what you are and none of them are you.)

Sasuke would be Obito (you're so full of love. bursting with it. of course you're going to try to change this ghoulish system that takes and takes and takes. of course you pull people in and then leave them.)

I wish we'd have seen more of these people :/ I need more info about what Belladonna and Nameless's characterizations are bc their designs are too good to not like! I headcanon that they're wayward humans who made deals with the Velvet Room and became attendants until their services aren't needed anymore. The Demon Painter, too, but his deal and service have been fulfilled after P2, thus his time in the Velvet Room was over.

And I really hope that Atlus is going to either port P1 & P2 like they joked on April 1st or that they'll just straight up remake the first three games (or at least the duology, please, I want to witness Maya for myself)
