Thai QL Favorite Tag Game
Oh this is going to be fun! Thank you sm @rocketturtle4 for the tag. I feel special 😄.
Anygay... I got into BL about a year ago when I stumbled upon a Bad Buddy reaction video. I watched the first 10 minutes and my brain lit up. I remember thinking - ok Orya, this is something else. You NEED to go watch this show. Now! and that's what I did. I binged BBS and rewatched it a few times until I felt I was ready to dive into the world of BL. My only other QL media experiences were western so this felt very different.
I do have to say that in addition to watching the shows - being here, reading, and taking part in the discussions around these shows has helped me process some things that I haven't had the ability to do in my day to day life. So, I have great appreciation for the genre as well as the wonderful humans that are taking part in these discussions.
And with that said - shall we...?
Favorite Thai QL - I have to say that for me it's a tie between I Told Sunset About You and 180 Degrees Longitude. Both these shows have managed to touch on some very specific queer experiences, to say very specific to me. These shows have managed to make me cry about my own experience (as opposed to just feeling for the characters). watching these shows was a therapeutic experience for me, and I will forever be grateful to them for it.
(However, I will NOT forgive the translators of 180DL for translating Mol as mom 98% of the time! So if you're watching the show take into account that almost every time the subs say mom - Pond is actually calling her by her name.)
Favorite Pairing - I think my favorite pair is First and Khaotung. They have great chemistry and it's always fun to watch them together. Even in MLC where they hardly interact, once they are together on screen they are ON. I also like the way they talk about their friendship.
Most Underrated Actor - in the wake of the most excellent La Pluie, I will have to give it to Title and Pee. They are seriously good.
Favorite Character - so many to choose from... Why are you making me choose?!
Well, if I HAVE to choose, I think I'll go with Ayan from The Eclipse. He is a menace, he is damaged, he really loves Akk, he really loves his mother, he has a purpose, he will fight for his beliefs. And I am here for all of it.
Favorite Side Character - I'm going with two characters (please don't make me choose)
Chot from Step by Step - in addition to the fact that I simply love him, I think he provides very important rep and allows a discussion about the complexities of being queer in non-queer spaces.
Ink from BBS - she is very real. She knows what's up and she will call you out on your bs. I also think that her presence in Pat and Pran's life gives them perspective. It's like she's there to bounce ideas and feelings off. Especially Pat who comes to her to check himself and his feelings (if this makes sense...)
Favorite Scene in a QL - again, I had to narrow it down to 3 and I can't choose. So 3 it is!
For the family and agenda - The group dinner at Pat and Pa's room with Ink and Pran. first of all I love that they have each other and can have this family time with people they can truly be themselves with. Then, I think the conversation they have around the table is important and offers a glimpse into P'Aof's BL-to-QL agenda.
For the beauty and feels - this! From Not Me
Tumblr media
For the personal queer experience - Step by Step and the Jeng Intervention. Jeng sitting in a room having to listen to people discuss his sexuality like he's not even there, talking over his head, othering him and leaving him no room to offer anything to the discussion other than an apology, when actually, bottom line, they want the gossip. Say what you will about Step by Step, but this scene depicts an experience that I haven't seen addressed in other Thai bls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite Line in a QL - this is the first thing that came to mind 😄
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most Anticipated QL (& why?) - I'm gonna have to go with almost everyone and say Only Friends. Why? Because first, Jojo. Then, I think that this is going to be something very different to what we usually get to see. The fact that this show is allowed to have all the mess + partner switching + gays that are gay and want to be gay with each other? It's a win in my book!
I don't mind that they will probably get together with their 'official' partner at the end, but just the fact that they are allowed to have a queer past (or present) with other characters, that is present on screen, is very different. We get that a little bit with Allan and Wen in MLC and I'm looking forward to seeing this in Only Friends.
Healthiest Relationship in a QL - PatPran hands down. And I feel more stongly about this after the Our Skyy 2 ep. These two are together by choice and that is what will keep them together. They talk about things, they are aware of their issues, and they are willing to listen and compromise for each other. I loved that the OS2 special helps us see how their 2 years separation (on bbs 12) is not such a big deal for them. They know that they choose to be together and that it's not a temporary thing. Therefore, what are 2 years in the long run...
Most Toxic Relationship in a QL - I'm going with a non-romantic relationship here and I have to give it to Wang/sasiwimol from 180DL.
Guilty Pleasure Series - House of Stars! I LOVE this show. It is insane and unhinged and peak soap opera. The subs are only vaguely related to what the characters are saying. People are jumping in and out of each other's beds. I said it before and I'll say it again - I am here for all 4,971 episodes of multiple generations of this hot mess! 😂
Honourable mention (my addition) - I would like to take advantage of this opportunity and thank those without whom all this would not exist:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen many who've already done this, so I hope I'm not retagging. So, if you feel up to it... @nerdybunnydestiny , @syrena-del-mar , @thegalwhorants

watch & rewatch drama list 💜✨
i saw a couple mutuals do it….. i yearn to be included im so good at talking too much
actually airing shows -
💜💜💜 midnight museum - frankly i don’t actually care what it is specifically going on between dome and khatha at this point. i mean, i’m into whatever it is, but i dont care how it turns out i’m in too deep already. this show invaded my brain i really really like it so far. the aesthetic and music are gorgeous & khatha is my newest pathetic lil meowmeow. i also especially like the fucked up extra eyes animal boys & june’s pretty dress and general aura
💜 bed friend - i watch this for extremely shallow reasons and i’m unafraid to admit it. i like seeing everyone’s neat meta & the pretty gifs but i Cannot Take uea’s backstory, like at all, so i just preview slider through to places where netjames are especially pretty. and they are so pretty
other stuff -
💜💜 i am trying to watch atots, since the concept didnt originally interest me but mlc gave me Mix Enjoyer status. i started the first episode two days ago but got distracted im bad. ill get there i really am interested now
💜 i rewatched the entirety of my school president over the last few days explicitly for the sake of my mental health. i love them i love them im cradling them in my hands like a precious thing
💜 i always have the eclipse open in my tabs, partially for reference bc of working on on our way up and partially For Me, because if i dont look at aye at least once a day i wither like a neglected plant
on the ‘when i’ve got the brainpower’ list -
💜💜 utsukushii kare - [dreamily] they look soooooo fucked up
💜 gotta go through between us again so someday i’ll finish my 5+1 / before winteam week
looking forward to -
💜💜💜💜 you guys probably already know this but im so extremely unhinged about only friends. like i think half of the million trailer views are just me. i know nearly all the words to ‘i’m not boring youre just bored’. i want san to hit Me with the baseball bat. and again, reiterating that my most fervent desire after seeing that relationship chart p’jojo put out is for firstmark to kiss at least once so first can complete his 98 line collection. please i need it ill never ask for anything again (lying)
💜 im about as excited abt the eclipse our skyy episode as i hope it doesnt come out soon, because i want oowu to be finished first. the others im excited for too but especially that one you know who i am. those bts pictures made me emo i want them to be so happy
and now u know :)

English Name:GSMTX-4CAS:1209500-46-8 Assay:98%+Molecular weight:0 Molecular formula: /Appearance: White powder Remarks: Only for research, not for humanPacking specifications (powder): 1g, 10g, 100g,1kg Storage conditions: -20°CGsMTx4 is a spider venom peptide that selectively inhibits cationic mechanosensitive channels (MSCs) such as TRPC1 and TRPC6 and Piezo channels. GsMTx4 blocks stretch-activated cation channels in astrocytes, cardiac cells, and smooth and skeletal muscle cells. GsMTx4 also inhibits TACAN, a mechanosensitive ion channel involved in the pain response. GsMTx4 decreases the leptin-induced AMPK and MLC-2 phosphorylation in breast epithelial cells. GsMTx4 is neuroprotective and inhibits lysophosphatidylcholine-induced astrocyte toxicity in vivo in mice. GsMTx4 suppresses neurogenesis and enhances astrogenesis in human neural stem cells. GsMTx4 (GsMTx-4, M-theraphotoxin-Gr1a) has been isolated from the venom of the spider Grammostola rosea. This cationic hydrophobic polypeptide blocks selectively the gating of cation selective channels and mechanosensitive ion channels such as TRPC1 or TRPC6, without having any effect on whole-cell voltage-sensitive currents. This toxin acts by perturbing the interface between the channel and the lipid bilayer without necessarily being in physical contact with the channel. GsMTx4 also demonstrated to active TRPA1 channel at 1µM concentration and to inhibit Piezo1 currents.

The Community Hub will be bustling with attendees throughout the duration of the conference. 8 AM – 5 PM CTCommunity Breakouts Stay tuned for a robust schedule of timely roundtable discussions and hands-on workshops opportunities. Business topics covered during these small-group breakouts will include DIY data analytics; targeting fan in sub-genres, using The MLC’s tools and resources; and understanding how the American Rescue Plan can benefit small businesses. We’ll also have focused and interactive discussions on diversity, equity & inclusions, financial planning, and more. 8 AM – 5 PM CTExplore Activation Stations Stop by our dedicated activation spaces to meet companies who are offering solutions to improve the ways our industry does business! Currently confirmed activation spaces include: Chartmetric, MoxieJam, MRC Data, Royalty Solutions, Single Music, Super HiFi, and TuneGO 10 AM – 12 PM CT#NEXTGEN_NOW After two years of virtual editions, our #NEXTGEN_NOW summit returns to the Music Biz stage in 2022. Don’t miss this year’s slate of young professionals from across a number of industry subsets discuss how they’re making a name for themselves by shaping the future of the music business, all while proving that age does not always equal authority! 10 – 10:50 AM CTBuilding on Borrowed Lands Remember the day Facebook and Instagram went offline? For several hours, two of the biggest platforms for promotion and information disbursement were nowhere to be found, leaving social media managers, artists, and labels everywhere scrambling. These “borrowed lands” that we’ve come to depend on for engagement were suddenly gone, and nobody knew when—or if—they would return.Building On Borrowed Lands will examine the ongoing debate over where artists and their teams focus their community-building efforts. A panel of experts in marketing and publicity will discuss the ever-evolving challenge of reaching people in the digital space, including the best places for engagement, the value of owning your content, and the timeless tips for success that still work today. 10 – 10:50 AM CTAct Local, Think Global: Discovering & Developing Tomorrow’s Stars Where They Live Traditional wisdom says that in order to be discovered in the music industry, you need to move to one of three hub cities: Los Angeles, New York, or Nashville. That means there is a tremendous amount of talent going undiscovered throughout the U.S., as many musicians don’t have the means or ability to live in one of these cities. The solution is to act local and think global, establishing a homebase in up-and-coming regional scenes and finding local stars to bring to a worldwide audience. This approach led to the explosion of Memphis rapper Moneybagg Yo in 2021, with his “A Gangsta’s Pain” album spending multiple weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 and serving as a springboard for local producers and songwriters YC and RealRed. In this panel, attendees will meet several executives who are pursuing this strategy and learn how they can apply lessons from their successes to their own work. 11 AM – 1 PM CTAmazon Workshop 12 – 2 PM CTThe Evolving Music Fan Experience 12 – 12:50 PM CTMusic Consumption Has Gone Global, Music Publishing Is Still Local – What Gives? With the ubiquity of music and video streaming, tracking music usage across the globe in dozens of languages and dialects has become impossible using the “tried and true” systems of yore that were put into place when Ford created the Model A. Right’s holders can no longer rely on collecting even part of what is theirs around the globe without the help of technology. While the US and Europe try to recreate the systems, countries like India and Africa are putting systems into place. How can we all work together to streamline getting our creators paid? In this session, participants will discuss how AI is working to solve this huge problem that has left the industry baffled and artists/rights holders unpaid for decades. Attendees will learn how technology, instead of teams of accident-prone people, now match millions of works with their appropriate owners regardless of where in the world, what language or what platform the works are played on. This session is for any artist or rights holder who doesn’t know “where’s the money?” 1 – 1:50 PM CTLegislative Outlook: Is EU Copyright Law A Blueprint for the Future of the Music Industry & Growing Creator Economy? The EU has begun course-correcting copyright legislation that has plagued the creation and exchange of music online for years. And we’ve seen in similar instances, especially when localized policy is enacted on global companies, that EU law tends to influence global action. The US is no exception and has been teasing a revision to its existing copyright laws for quite some time. As the distribution of content continues to reach new heights with the growth of the creator economy, we can predict more focus than ever will be on providing rightsholders with the attribution and compensation they’re due. And if we are to use the current state of EU copyright laws as a blueprint for the next five years, we can anticipate other markets, including the US, realigning priorities for copyright.Join us for a lively panel discussion exploring how EU and US legislation may impact global copyright changes that benefit music rightsholders, what other changes we may see as this shift in liability spreads around the globe, and how rightsholders can set themselves up for future success with copyright and licensing solutions. 1:30 – 4 PM CTThe NFT & Metaverse Summit 2 – 2:50 PM CTInnovative Inclusion: Closing the Diversity Gap It goes without saying that the global, Covid-19 pandemic–appropriately nicknamed “The Great Accelerator”–put the spotlight on the pre-existing, social challenges that would no longer be deemed “inappropriate talk at work.” The music business, which is no stranger to constant change, finds itself once again facing profound organizational shifts due to societal and technological influences. On this panel, Naledi Nyahuma Seck, The Orchard’s VP of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will moderate a discussion on how companies are lowering the barriers to entry, and successfully building and maintaining inclusive, innovative cultures Key takeaways: 1. Best practices for empowering, engaging and attracting employees, creators and partners of diverse backgrounds to your organization 2. Discuss Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and how to embed these three pillars throughout your business 3. Strategies to close the digital divide of historically excluded groups, internally and externally 4. Examples of how a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion positively impacts your business’ bottomline 2:30 – 3:20 PM CTNavigating New Strategies: How A&R, Artist Marketing, & Distribution Come Together in the Age of Streaming Over the last few years, a seemingly endless list of success routes have been paved for getting great new music out to a global streaming audience. Niche playlists, easy access to distribution, and a world where streaming services are now ubiquitous have made it simple for listeners to experiment with a ton of new music. Are we finally at the “even playing field” the independent world has dreamed we’d achieve? Whether it be TikTok break-outs totally blowing up, low-fi hip-hop made by unknown beatmakers streaming to a massive yet passive audience of people studying, or a young talent like Bad Bunny blowing past the boundaries of a once ghettoized genre like Reggaeton into the farthest reaches of pop, wherein all of this is an A&R strategy one can actually “plan?”Further, in this now very boundaryless world, where music from Puerto Rico, Colombia, South Africa, Brazil or South Korea has just as much of a chance as music from London, Miami, or New York in finding a huge audience, how do artist and businesses with no financial backing actually take advantage of all of this opportunity? 2:30 – 4:30 PM CTYouTube Workshop 2:45 – 4:45 PM CTCatalog Valuation & Acquisition Discussions 4 – 4:50 PM CTA DAO Named Sue Meet Sue, discovered last night in a Honky Tonk. Sue is an artist destined for great things, it’s so obvious that rather than wait until Music Biz 2032, we will now condense Sue’s future into 60 minutes: Hear how we will organize a fan community and curate marketing using digital tokens. Working with other artists we will build a co-operative channel on Audius.co. We will set up a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to fractionalize Sue’s IP assets, incentivize early stage investors, and raise recording and touring budgets. The artist will pay a record label an advance in return for its marketing skills, and connect to new fans through a sold out virtual Ryman Auditorium show. We will describe setting up Sue’s metadata to link directly to bank accounts, and how by joining a Collective Management DAO Sue’s licensing opportunities will be maximized. We will describe an optimal business model, looking at recent examples of artists leveraging Web 3.0. We won’t be evangelizing for buzzwords and tech dreams, we will be exploring substantive business questions which arise from applying existing tech. What are the main street (not fringe) risks and consequences. What are the actionable business cases for evolving? 4 – 4:50 PM CTThe Prioritization of Mental Health & Wellness in the Music Industry Research shows that a high percentage of artists battle symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. These issues don’t only affect musicians on stage and also manifest in every one in their orbit — from roadies and sound engineers to agents and family members. In a path to preserve our music industry, how can we focus on sustainability while prioritizing mental health and wellness? This panel will feature a round table discussion between label executives, talent managers, artists, organizations, and mental health apps focused on solving this problem. 5 – 6 PM CTMusic Biz LIVE Keynote Series Born out of the events of 2020, our Music Biz LIVE interview series brought informational discussions with top industry executives to your homes so our industry could stay informed on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic across the business. In 2022, the LIVE series carries on as our banner for the thrilling slate of high-level keynote discussions we will feature to close out each day of the Music Biz Conference! 6 – 7:30 PM CTWelcome Bash Benefiting the Music Business Association Scholarship Foundation 7 PM CTWomen In Music Party 8 PM CTUtopia Music Off-Site Party 9 PM CTJammber Off-Site Party
  Tuesday, May 10
8 AM – 6 PM CTRegistration — 8 – 10 AM CTCommunity Hub See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 8 AM – 5 PM CTExplore Activation Stations See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 9 – 11 AM CTTwitch Workshop 9:30 – 10:30 AM CTVinyl Revolution: Research Study Reveal “Vinyl Revolution” is a consumer research study from MusicWatch, Inc. that is jointly sponsored by the Music Business Association and the RIAA. The study will examine what is driving growth for the format and profile the buyers behind the momentum. The “Vinyl Revolution” study will examine why fans buy and listen; their preferred discovery methods and motivations, and their shopping and listening habits. The study will look at the potential for future growth in the vinyl format. Hear it here for the first time! 9:30 – 10:20 AM CTFAIR PAY FOR EVERY PLAY: Empowering Creator Rights in the Digital Age We believe that music can be a vastly bigger industry than it is today by doubling down on truth and transparency. This will allow creators, publishers, labels and collection societies to enable growth for the entire industry. Reducing operative overhead, targeting growth opportunities, and making music a true asset class will allow the industry to finally become its best self. We also need robust technology to provide accurate global data consumption reports and guarantee revenue collection and distribution to all interested parties. So, join us in our discussion on how to create greater transparency, bridge the data and information gaps and achieve ‘Fair Pay for Every Play’. This panel is for anyone who believes we can do better and is interested in the sustainable growth of the music industry. Remember, “We can make it if we try!” 9:30 – 10:20 AM CTIndependence and Equity: The New Business of Music The last decade has seen an upending of the institutions and gatekeepers that have long dictated which musicians and songwriters are able to access promotion, distribution, and other creative and financial resources. More recently, the music industry has faced a reckoning around equity and inclusion. While white men continue to dominate the halls of power, the country’s focus on racial and gender justice has brought new and real change to the industry – both in terms of more diverse leadership and A&R and programmers recognizing the value of diverse rosters. Our panel of leaders from multiple sectors will discuss what the music business could look like in the coming years, informed by this much-needed focus on equity, coupled with the past few years’ rise of creator-oriented music services. 11 AM – 12:45 PM CTCMA Brunch & Music Biz Annual Meeting 1 – 4 PM CTBrand Summit, Presented by Clio Music 1 – 3 PM CTApple Workshop 1 – 1:50 PM CTEmployee Resource Groups in the Music Industry As the music business reckons with its history of inequity and homogeneity, especially in its leadership, it’s become clear that hiring a more diverse staff is not enough – these employees need support and community within the workplace. Employee Resource Groups can be excellent resources for employees from underrepresented communities within workplaces of all sizes and in all parts of the music business. Our panel, comprising ERG leaders from publishers and labels, will discuss why ERGs are important in the music industry, how workplaces can support ERGs and how employees can start them, and the purposes and objectives of these groups. ERGs can have a major impact on workplace culture and community, and we’ll discuss how employees from all groups and workplaces can benefit. We’ll also touch on how ERGs and similar affinity groups can work outside of the U.S. 2 – 5 PM CTCommunity Hub See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 2 – 3 PM CTRecord Store Day Town Hall Since 2007, records stores, their customers, and artists across the world have come together and celebrated the unique culture of record stores and the special role these independently owned shops play in their communities. The success of Record Store Day continues to amaze and just proves the importance of the physical format in today’s music ecosystem. This Town Hall is open to all Music Biz 2022 registrants and is your chance to hear the impact that Record Store Day has had on the industry over the years and to celebrate the accomplishments of the recent 2022 event. Ideas will circulate about how your artists can reap the benefits of participating in this unique industry promotion. An open forum discussion will allow all to share ideas about how to make the 2023 event even bigger. 2:30 – 3:20 PM CTShaping Change: Artist Managers & Advocacy The Music Managers Forum – US and International Music Managers Forum present a deep dive and analysis into how managers work with their artists on mission based initiatives, whether it be social justice, poverty, climate change or the myriad of other cause related activities needed to improve and progress our world condition. There is no doubt the power of artist activism is a significant force for progression. Some artists are born activists, taking action and inspiring others to join movements while some artists know they want to say something but struggle to find their authentic voice and true message. Hear from leading music managers both in the US and abroad who guide, cultivate, preserve and sustain these voices of change … and make positive change in their own right! 2:30 – 3:20 PM CTB2B Music Streaming: Creating Incremental Revenue Expansion for the Music Streaming Market Music streaming has become the dominant format for the consumption of music in many countries around the world. A specific segment of music streaming that is currently overlooked is background music for businesses, music that is used in commercial establishments and public spaces, such as shops, restaurants, gyms, malls, cafés, hotels, airports, etc. At the moment, a large percentage are not licensed correctly, and businesses are using consumer streaming services that are licensed solely for personal listening. This results in significant losses in the distribution of revenues that is unfair and in many cases, non-existent for artists and songwriters. Over 90 percent of businesses are currently using B2C services illicitly and legacy platforms still apply somewhat antiquated tariffs and licenses.B2B streaming presents the music industry with the lowest hanging fruit for incremental revenue expansion for the music-streaming market. Today, 100 million businesses play music every day, which can result in a $40 billion market opportunity if monetized correctly. The B2B customers are already there, playing music already. All the industry needs to do is fix the broken background music market and get them using a legitimate streaming solution. Knowledge of the difference between private and commercial music streaming needs to be heightened among business owners.B2B music streaming has great potential for the future. It is time to create a more transparent, fair, and effective system that compensates artists and music creators in the correct way. This panel would discuss the economic impact and long-term implications of background music streaming for artists, record labels, songwriters, and publishers. Additionally, it will discuss the current problems facing this sector and present potential solutions to make B2B music streaming a future growth driver of the music streaming market. 4 – 4:50 PM CTThey’re Coming For Us: Fraudsters & How We Stop Them From discussions with leading experts from all corners of the industry including labels, DSPs, distributors, artists, managers, and even streaming farm operators, the fraudulent streaming activity range nets out at ~10% of all annual streaming activity. That equals ~$1.1B USD in revenue flowing into the hands of fraudsters in 2021.This panel will bring together music industry insiders and technologists, alongside some of the brightest academic and cybersecurity experts from outside of music, to shine a light on what can be done to better combat fraud, together. Our goal as an industry must be to ensure the integrity of streaming for artists, labels, publishers, distributors, platforms, and consumers alike 4 – 4:50 PM CTVinyl Projections & Lead Times — OH MY!! This panel will bring to light both the missed opportunities from mis-projections in vinyl manufacturing and will also establish some Best Practices around projections, creating I/O’s and getting it RIGHT…from the beginning. Don’t be “that guy” that losses tons of sales and pisses off fans because your numbers were arbitrary; based on a price break or some other random factor. Sometimes bean counting can really help you out. But it’s not just about the projection the timing is critical, too. Lead times! We don’t just mean manufacturing lead times. We’re talking about pre-books and the critical run-up to release date. We’ll look at the risk and payoff. 5 – 6 PM CTMusic Biz LIVE Keynote Series: Jon Platt, Chairman & CEO, Sony Music Publishing Amidst a 25-year career working with artists ranging from legends like Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Rihanna to newcomers like Olivia Rodrigo, Jon Platt has greatly influenced ways in which songwriters are respected and compensated for their life’s work. In this special Music Biz LIVE conversation, he’ll share his insights on the rising profile of the publishing sector, and his views on the future of the industry at large! 6 – 7 PM CTCocktail Party sponsored by Vevo 7 PM CTTwitch Off-Site Party TBD2022 Clio Music Awards 9 PM CT Hit Parader Party
  Wednesday, May 11
8 AM – 6 PM CTRegistration — 8 – 3 PM CTCommunity Hub See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 8 AM – 5 PM CTCommunity Breakouts See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 8 AM – 5 PM CTExplore Activation Stations See Monday, May 9 listing for more details 9 – 9:50 AM CTGlobalization of the Music Streaming World Join our diverse group of international panelists as we deep dive into how some artists live out their careers within local success, and how the select few graduate through the ranks to global stardom. What are your goals as an artist? There are acts who are quite happy staying in their town or city, and those who achieve national/regional/global fame. What does each group’s data look like? Are there detectable signs of someone on the brink? How do some artists’ work limit them to a certain geography, or how does it lend itself to easily traversing borders and culture? What streaming and social platforms matter more in various regions? As a global music industry we must together drive parity and diversity ensuring work opportunities are enabled for all. This is culture. Individuals as well as companies – be they labels, publishers, distributors, streaming platforms or media – help to drive immediate and accurate payment. How do we work towards a responsible and ethical future, where contract management is seamless? Where the painful and time consuming task of having to chase or investigate payments, sometimes years after a release has been enjoyed by many millions around the world, no longer exists? Communities that drive diversity and opportunities for all are key to our global music ecosystem; an industry currently valued in excess of $US 20 billion and growing. The panel will discuss the importance of crediting all accurately, reliably and responsibly, and the vital role that will play in facilitating a fairer and more solid future for all music creatives. The U.S. music biz has a neighbor problem — and it’s costing millions each year to US labels and performers. Neighboring rights (performance rights on sound recordings) are a major source of revenues for record labels and performers in most of the world, including the U.S. through SoundExchange. But with the US not having NR for terrestrial radio, a lot of revenue is left on the table, in the US and abroad. For a long time, U.S. performers could not claim NR for their music played in Europe due to the lack of reciprocity in the US. However, a recent decision from the European Court of Justice may change the way U.S. performers and labels can access NR in Europe. What does it mean for U.S. performers and labels? How could US labels and performers maximize their NR revenues? And, how could the U.S. join the rest of the world? 12 – 12:50 PM CTThe Power of Financial Data: Reporting, Transparency, Analytics and Beyond The last few years have brought unprecedented attention to royalty reporting in music. Dealmaking is at an all-time high. Transparency and actionable business insights are needed more than ever as artists release more frequently and collaborate more than ever before. In a world of complex repertoire and deals stacked on top of deals, this panel of experts will offer insights into how artists and rights holders can maximize the value of their financial data and reporting, reshaping monetization across the industry 1 – 1:50 PM CTWhat’s Your Fight Song?: Alternative Dispute Resolution and the Copyright Claims Board in Music Cases Nothing kills time, money and energy more than extensive litigation over rights ownership, licensing or other music related disputes. Is there another way to fight for creative rights, while collaborating to satisfy everyone’s best interests? This presentation will offer: tools to prevent, mitigate or efficiently resolve music disputes, with interest-based negotiation, mediation and facilitation; and discussion of the new Copyright Claims Board (CCB) as an alternative to federal court for copyright disputes.
Takeaways include: • How to engage in adversarial situations more productively (and cheaply) • Understanding the CCB’s roles and procedures for case resolution; and • How to negotiate in a way that minimizes conflict so everyone wins.
1:30 – 2:20 PM CTBeyond The Charts: Performing in Your Own League The music industry is still obsessed with artists making it to #1 in the charts, and while it’s amazing to read their success stories, for many others the charts are not relevant at all. With so much data available nowadays, it poses the question of its contextualization, of comparing performance with artists from the same league as is so commonly done in sports. More importantly, the focus should be on finding and engaging an audience that will turn into fans and bring sustainable growth to the artist. How can we measure the true value of an artist across multiple platforms and revenue streams and compare them to similar artists? How can data help an artist’s team identify trends and make educated marketing decisions to help sustain the growth? Could we use an industry wide dataset to create benchmarks and identify what ‘good’ metrics are for artists? 2 – 2:50 PM CTExploitation or Empowerment? The Complex Relationship Between Music and the Prison System A deep dive into the intricate and strenuous relationship between music and incarceration, from the perspective of industry professionals who have either lived the experience, been impacted by the relationship or are working hard to make a difference within it.Discussion Topics: • The unique obstacles music business professionals must face when developing an artist impacted by the criminal justice system, from financial responsibility to reputation management. • How labels, agents and managers benefit from signing artists who have been incarcerated • How incarceration influences music culture, virality and the development of future artists • What role the industry can play in criminal justice reform 2 – 2:50 PM CTThe Future of Public Performance Licensing for Independent Touring Songwriters Independent venues and performing artist/songwriters have experienced the most challenging time in the history of live music. While concerts are back, cancellations and low attendance are wreaking havoc on the industry and impacting the pocketbooks of songwriters performing at independent venues. As we continue to rebuild the independent live music ecosystem, we can use this inflection point to examine ways to improve public performance licensing and better support these creators. This panel will discuss how to improve the connection between songwriters and the licensing revenue being collected on their behalf in independent venues across the country. We’ll explore what’s working in the current system, where room for improvement exists, and technological solutions to streamline the process and get working-class creators paid more quickly. Join stakeholders from across the live music spectrum in this candid conversation on shaping the future we want to see for public performance licensing.
