Seraphim Papyrus AU.
Papyrus confronts Frisk during the genocide route as usual. However, he comes prepared this time. When Frisk attacks, he blocks their strike with a bone and blindly fires a gaster blaster in retaliation. But, something goes wrong. Papyrus is not as practiced at using his blaster as Sans is snd instead of destroying Frisk's soul, it flat out knocks the soul out of their body. A panicked Papyrus tries to grab their soul and winds up absorbing it on accident.
Papyrus spends the next several minutes freaking out and feebly trying to jam Frisk's soul back into their body. When is becomes clear that this isn't a problem he can solve alone, he brings Frisk's body to Undyne's house. He's in such a panicked rush he doesn't even realize he made it there twice as quickly as usual. Papyrus babbles and stammers until Undyne can get him to calm down. After realizing what's happened, she stoically says that they need to bring the human to Asgore.
Undyne is strangely serious all throughout their trip, which annoys Papyrus as she awkwardly avoids his questions about what's going on and whether Frisk is going to be okay. The most he can get out of her is that he absorbed the human's soul, which he kinda already knew.
Papyrus also realizes that he's much faster than he once was, able to outpace Undyne even with his casual strides thanks to the power of the soul. He manages to get her to untense a bit by challenging her to a friendly race, which works until she remembers why Papyrus is suddenly this fast and sombers up again.
When they reach Asgore, Undyne and King repeatedly dance around what exactly it is Papyrus did until Papyrus snaps and demands an explanation. Undyne finally tenses up snd explains that the human is dead... which Papyrus snaps at because he knew that already. He knows full well nothing can survive without a soul and he's genuinely insulted that neither of them thought he knew that already or that they thought that they needed to hide that from him. His rant stops short when he realizes his yelling is physically shaking the entire Judgement Hall and cracking the window's glass.
When Papyrus calms down he explains that he's actually been rather hesitant to capture or even harm a human because he knew on some level that they would likely never be seen again. He didn't want to be responsible for killing anyone, even indirectly. Papyrus even speculates that most monsters feel the same way on some level. They don't hate humans or want to hurt any of them, but they feel like they have to.
"Wow. Papyrus, I didn't know you felt that way."
"I THOUGHT YOU WOULD. AFTER ALL, I THINK WE ALL FEEL THAT WAY ON SOME LEVEL."
Now that Papyrus has finally gotten those uncomfortable feelings out of his system, he's resigned to give Asgore the soul and free all the monsters... but Asgore is hesitant. He doesn't want to do any of this, like Papyrus said, but he also worries that breaking the barrier so soon after the humans went missing would make it clear that they were murdered. Knowing that monsters murdered seven (supposedly) innocent humans would completely torpedo any attempt at peace and Asgore really doesn't want to wipe out humanity, even if he probably could with the seven souls.
Papyrus argues that those humans had families and that those families at least deserve to know what happened to them and points out that waiting for years would give Asgore ample opportunity to lose his nerve and abandon the whole plan. Undyne takes Papyrus's side. She didn't train for years in the royal guard just to watch Asgore sit around wringing his hands when the opportunity arose to save everyone.
This is when the Player comes in. The Player has still been observing all of these going ons in the form of a cutscene and eventually a text box appears. While they can't control Papyrus like they can Frisk, they can give him little suggestions. So, they suggest Papyrus should take the souls himself. Papyrus stops a moment as the thought appears in his head. He could, couldn't he? He could just save all of monster kind right now. He could return the humans bodies to their families.
Maybe he could even make amends for killing Frisk.
Papyrus apologizes to Asgore before several bone attacks break the souls out of their containers. The room glows a blinding white as Papyrus seemingly vanishes and before anyone can do anything, the barrier bursts. Undyne calls out to Papyrus, but the light flies down the mountain without heeding a word.
The local village is gripped with fear as a massive skeletal monstrosity descends upon them in a cloud of light. He carries in each hand the corpses of several children, presumably his victims. The humans open fire, but their bullets bounce harmlessly off him as he lays the children down in the grass.
"BE NOT AFRAID, HUMANS. I MEAN YOU NO HARM. I'M ONLY HERE SO YOU CAN MOURN YOUR LOSS. I'M SORRY."
After that display, Asgore has no choice but to take full responsibility for what he did, with several angry and vengeful humans making it clear that the only reason that he was still alive was because the humans were afraid of what the "skeletal monstrosity" might do to them if they hurt its king.
As the uneasy peace began to settle in, Sans finds his brother curled up in on himself at the peak of Mt. Ebott. He wanted to be alone and he couldn't really fit in his house anymore, much less his own room. Sans had been privately briefed on what happened by Undyne and no one else knows that the "Angel" that freed them was Papyrus.
Papyrus is still forlorn by what he did to Frisk and none of Sans assurances or excuses really help. It doesn't matter if it was in self defense, it doesn't matter if was an accident. He killed a child. He's a horrible person.
But then, Papyrus feels a voice deep with his soul. Frisk's voice. Reminding him that everyone could be a good person if they just tried.
Papyrus is overjoyed and slowly the other souls' voices trickle in within him. Reassuring him. Thanking him. Forgiving him.
Papyrus eventually boasts that he's so proud of Frisk for turning their life around. Only Frisk reveals that they weren't actually in control during any of that. Papyrus immediately turns his forgiving praises towards Chara, but they deny all responsibility too. Everyone is confused and Papyrus vows he'll discover the real culprit eventually.
Over the years, Papyrus helps oversee the gradual reintegration of monster kind into society, cheerfully trying to ignore the fact that half the reason he's so successful is because everyone is quietly afraid of his literal God-like power. Overtime, however, people slowly begin to see him as a Superman figure. He stops more than a handful of natural disasters, though he does have to dial back his usual boisterousness to avoid accidentally causing any himself. One loud "NYEH!" Could easily split the planet if he's not careful. Throughout all this, an increasingly frustrated player keeps plelting him with demands, unable to reset while he still had Frisk's soul. Gradually, Papyrus puts the pieces together and confronts the source of the voice.
The player eventually opens the game to see Papyrus staring at them on an otherwise blank screen.
"HELLO.... YOU. MY APOLOGIES, I DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHO OR WHAT YOU ARE. BUT I DO KNOW THAT YOU'VE BEEN CAUSING AN AWFUL LOT OF TROUBLE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GET OUT OF THIS. I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU MADE FRISK SLAUGHTER THE MONSTERS IN THE RUINS. OR WHY YOU KILLED ASGORE'S WIFE. AND I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY YOU BLAME CHARA FOR ALL OF THIS. BUT SOMETHING I DO UNDERSTAND IS THAT ANYONE CAN CHANGE."
"HUMAN. MONSTER. WHATEVER YOU MAY BE. I IMPLORE YOU TO LOOK DEEP INSIDE YOURSELF AND STOP THIS RIGHT NOW. YOU'VE HURT PEOPLE I DEEPLY CARE ABOUT AND YOU WOULD'VE HURT FAR MORE IF I HADN'T STOPPED YOU. OUR LIVES AREN'T YOUR GAME AND IT'S TIME YOU STOPPED TREATING THEM LIKE SUCH."
"SO WHEN YOU COME BACK... IF YOU COME BACK, PLEASE, LET US BE FRIENDS. JUST AS WE WERE IN THOSE OTHER TIMELINES FRISK TALKED ABOUT. UNTIL THEN, THE GAME STOPS HERE."
The game crashes to desktop and never properly opens again.
Everyone will have their happy ending. The Angel demands it.
