Over the past year, Acid Jazz label owner/DJ Ed Piller and designer Steve Rowland have been putting together a book of mod revival fanzines from 1978 to 1984, entitled Modzines. “They’re an important social record,” Piller says. “By 1980, the mainstream media was virtually ignoring the enormous mod revival, apart from to disparage it.” Fanzines existed to “inform mods about culture, fashion and music”, says Piller. Their creation was aided by the rise of photocopiers, and inspired by Paul Weller and the Jam, as well as other bands such as the Chords and Purple Hearts. “They provided a launchpad for many successful musicians, publishers, authors and journalists,” Piller adds.

Route 66, nº 4. Parece ser que los dos primeros números del modzine los sacamos (JADD, Mono, Mateo, Armando, José Ramón, Miguel Ángel, etc…) antes de que saliera el ejemplar número 0 de la revista Ruta 66. 

Dice la leyenda, como anécdota, que Kike Turmix leyó uno de esos números, le pareció muy representativo el nombre (rock and roll) y él mismo fue quien lo propuso, españolizado, en un consejo de redacción en Barcelona o algo así.

Writing: I hadn’t written for fanzines for a while and then a mate got in touch and asked if I would like to contribute to his Modzine Sharpen Up. Got to say I’ve really enjoyed writing some pieces on my own vision of Mod.  All issues are sold out but Issue 7 is due at the end of March 2021. A terrific read.
