I tried to recreate the Molluck doll from Oddworld Soulstorm, because I really like that doll. I'm very happy with how the head turned out on mine!

I'm sending him off to the Oddworld craft contest. Wish him luck, or I'll chuck him into a bonfire.

Just kidding! He's stuck with me forever :)

Pixel Molluck Thing

Man, it's been like... 5 years since I did some 'proper' bigger pixel art. I didn't wanna use the rendering style I have often used since it takes like ages and I felt so clueless when I started colouring this... But after some time, I could figure out good enough colours. Though, this is kinda lazily done still.

I'm more used to do smaller pixel stuff, also because it takes less time... But maybe after I learn to use colours better I could try to use my old pixel art style or more like improve it. Right now, I just feel like practicing and not doing any bigger projects since I just feel still so unsure of how to draw... Man, it can just still feel like I cannot draw, like when I struggled with the colours with this, but I still just keep drawing and am able to figure out how to do better. Drawing can feel like solving a puzzle sometimes... In this case it was like how to colour 1000 pixels.

But yeah, I kinda wanted to try making a pixel avatar for myself, like I used to do years ago but those little pixel things. I haven't really done any avatar for myself here before because well, I have felt like I just cannot stand my own art... But I see how it goes now. I should draw a better banner for myself too...

And yes, for some odd reason I seem to love Molluck in pink... It just suits him so well and I don't know why!

Here’s a slightly unfinished sketch thing of my take on the Oddswitch AU version of Molluck.

I based his outfit partly on @boopwyrm’s design. They made him super tall based on thier own headcanon that native/non-industrialised glukkon’s legs would keep growing as they evolved to the point where their average hight was about 13 feet tall. I wanted to see what Oddswitch!Molluck would look like with a short body similar to @francoisl-artblog’s Glukkon scrub designs.

I like the idea of Molluck as a wannabe glukkon saviour of sorts, mirroring Abe’s role as the mudokon messiah in canon, as suggested by @boopyworm. Since their artwork depicts him with more native clothes, I thought maybe switch!Molluck could be born/raised in isolated native glukkon society as opposed to being born into slavery. As I feel like an industrial-outsider protagonist isn’t something we’ve seen that often in canon aside from munch.

Before the events of the story, I imagine he was either a native farmer or hunter, as a callback to the stockglukk profession of his canon counterpart. The reason Molluck would go on to try and save the enslaved glukks and rebel against the Mudokons is because of his years of seeing the mudokons stealing land from nature and animals being either taken to be bred for meat and slaughtered on mass or over-hunted to extinction. Amoug… other reasons.

Plus, seeing his fellow glukkons avoiding taking action against the mudokons and instead go deeper into hiding and preserve the culture that the mudokons were continually destroying sparked a lot of anger in Molluck and drove him to want to take direct action to save his kind. This definitely created tension and resentment between Molluck and his fellow natives and high alchemists, who discouraged him from his whole quest. Saying the Glukkon tribes couldn’t risk engaging in conflict with the vastly overpowered mudokons while they were still venerable. Or as one of Mollucks colleagues warned him;

“No glukkon has ever beaten a mudokon… ever…”

You are naive and can be manipulated, you may have even managed to rebel, but who tells me that you don't fall into the same trap of duping, given your moron nature? Oddworld: The Promised Neverland homage (pt.1)

‘Kay, so I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole that is Oddworld lore…and I was *already* a big fan of the whole concept thanks to “The Promised Neverland.”

Surely this has been done before, but I couldn’t help paying some homages to the series—especially because it fits so damn well for obvious reasons!

And honestly…this is the most fun that I’ve had with my art for a long, long time. It’s like I remembered what I love about creating, and even *how* to do it. I remember loving symbolism and the significance of imagery…like here? I loved having the plates act as a kind of sick, ironic commodity: like the Glukkons absolutely would sell off “authentic” style dish wares with which to serve their workforce up on.

And even though I’ve only been able to play both the New n’ Tasty re-release and Soulstorm, I had a lot of fun trying to kind of reconcile the designs some for Abe and Alf? Alf especially; I liked the idea of him wearing his overalls down 90’s-ish style because it kind of acts reminiscent of his old loincloth, but still keeps him as visually distinct as Abe or Toby.

I was just gonna practice in drawing soulstorm gluks but I guess I went a bit too far and even colored this one.

The second most fascinating character for me after Abe is Molluck, love seeing him going through these events and developing as a personality. Never thought I’ll have some pity for this guy but this is exactly what I’ve felt in the bad ending. (Also if he will end up on the same side with Abe in this whole story I will be ready to die peacefully.)

Molluck, Brewer, and Aslik in the oddswitch au. I drew Molluck tiny this time based on  @ohfugecannada and  francoisl-artblog ‘s head canons  on what gluks would look like without industrialization. Both envision them being short and almost like dwarfs which makes the Glukkons seem more adorable and endearing similar to mudokons in the canon lore. Initially this scene was meant to be reminiscent to the beginning of Soulstorm with Abe having escaped with a small fallowing and conversing with a shaman type figure. Here Molluck and Brewer are bickering over their next steps wearing a mix of worker and tribal garb. 

In  @ohfugecannada ‘s hc Molluck was born free and resents his fellow gluks for not fighting back, especially alchemists as they try to dissuade him from his goal. I agree with them that having  an industrial-outsider protagonist would give a different perspective on the factories and I think that would be really cool for the au. Aslik and Brewmaster could serve Alf and Toby’s roles with  Brewmaster being an alchemist Molluck convinces to join him on his journey? 

I made the symbol on the rock a flipped version of the Magog Cartel’s logo. Its slightly less threatening and meant to resemble the sun. Perhaps Glukkon’s worship the sun and their insistence on doing so only further infuriates the Mudokons?
