Important contributors to early gothic fiction Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) and Matthew 'Monk' Lewis (1775-1818) were both born on the 9th of July - happy belated birthday (because there's more to life than always posting on time)! . #generallygothic #gothic #gothicliterature #bornthisday #bornonthisday #btd #botd #otd #annradcliffe #matthewlewis #monklewis #englishliterature #gothicfiction #gothicnovel #novel #book #bookspines #themonk #theitalian #theromanceoftheforest #themysteriesofudolpho #bookstagram #bookworm #academic

Matthew Lewis' (1775-1818) is synonymous with his 1796 novel, 'The Monk'; so much so that he's more commonly called 'Monk Lewis' than Matthew. 'The Monk' is a scandalous, perverse, and highly entertaining novel that revels in religious rebellion and condemnation of the Catholic church. Religion is a theme often discussed, subverted, and criticised in gothic literature. The gothic has a complex relationship with religion, taking Catholicism as an early establishment against which to rebel. Subversion of religion features heavily in early Gothic texts, particularly those written during The Age of Enlightenment. This was a time in which atheism was first extensively written about and became a more commonly accepted belief. A famous example of this is Matthew 'Monk' Lewis' 'The Monk' (1796), which is a wonderfully dramatic tale of sex and corruption. The Gothic: What? is an ongoing blog series, covering the subtopics of the gothic trope. To better understand the gothic, read along! In an 1826 essay on the supernatural, pioneering gothic author Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) controversially stated that there are two ways of evoking fear in literature: HORROR and TERROR. The former is when horrible things actually happen, and is implicitly male. The latter keeps the reader in a continual state of suspense, and is predominantly female. Radcliffe suggested that one was better than the other...and boldly claimed the Matthew 'Monk' Lewis (1775-1818) wrote horror, which she wrote terror. No points for guessing which Radcliffe thought was better, but can you differentiate between the two? What are your favourite gothic horror and gothic terror books or films? #generallygothic #gothic #supernatural #essay #academicessay #literarycriticism #literaryanalysis #writersonwriting #annradcliffe #matthewlewis #monklewis #gothicnovel #gothicfilm #gothichorror #horrorandterror #gothicterror #horrorfilm #terrorfilm #horrornovel #terrornovel #horrorvsterror #malevsfemale #gender #academic
