Population: 25
The submitter commented, “It's not a city and probably you could argue about village. It's an abbey and commune that sits on the mountain of Mont-Saint-Michel, which is also an island and the road to Mont-Saint-Michel is die to the tides not always usable. From the religious origin (due to the Abbey) aside it is very cool there. Landscape and historically a very interesting place. It has a very little population of 27 people and is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.”

Estimate: €400-600.
To be sold Bayeux Enchères, Bayeux, France, 19 May 2024.
You can see Mont-Saint-Michel in the background. ‘Ramasseurs de goémon’ are seaweed gatherers. Up until the 1950s, thousands of wagonloads of seaweed were harvested on the French coast each year to extract the potassium within for use in the glass and soap industries and for the manufacture of gunpowder.

This is the beautiful Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey in northern France. According to Le Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), in June 1811, the abbey was made into a “central house of detention” by decree of Napoleon. Though this decree was considered to be sacrilegious, it actually saved the ancient and historic abbey from demolition.
It remained a prison until 1863 and was classified officially as a historical monument in 1874.

Mont-Saint-Michel Celebrates A Millenia
Mont-Saint-Michel Celebrates A Millenia
Mont-Saint-Michel, one of France’s most spectacular tourist destinations, is celebrating one thousand years since its founding. Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky island only a few hundred miles off the shore of Normandy, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. It is close enough to shore that visitors could walk to it at low tide, though today there is a bridge elevated above the sand…
