At least they did get to get married. And they were both really old, and Dottie was already not in the best health.

It definitely would’ve been better if she hadn’t died on screen and they’d been able to have another few happy years together.

But I don’t know, I just don’t have the energy to get really angry every time a lesbian dies on screen, especially when it feels at least somewhat justified by the narrative. Not because I don’t think it’s a bad overall trend, but it’s just exhausting to always have to qualify my enjoyment of lesbian stories by saying that I know it’s problematic when one of them dies. I know it’s problematic when one of them dies, but sometimes I just want to like things.

None of this is your fault, and you’re obviously still allowed to be mad at the ending, this is just something that’s been on my mind.

goddammit is it that bad? I was psyched for it :-(

so as a movie it wasn’t bad imo! like, visually it was really interesting & beautiful, and it brought up some thought-provoking issues with the plot. i think it was really atmospherically consistent if that makes sense, and there were some really amazingly put together scenes. it didn’t feel boring or slow which for a three hour movie is pretty great.

it’s just that the uhhhh Representational Issues are really in keeping with the dystopian atmosphere they set up (read: lots of straight white men killing people and flat objectified female characters and mayyyybe four? people of color with small speaking roles despite being set in los angeles, come on y’all). on some level i have to believe this was intentional, but they never really addressed racism or misogyny in-universe, because we were hanging out with ryan whatshisface’s pov the whole time. 

basically the casting felt sort of... “colorblind/gender-blind” and tokenized, rather than “specifically putting only white men in powerful roles to show that the society is screwed up.” and i came out of it feeling really exhausted because there weren’t any really well-developed female characters or characters of color to balance that out (like one of the only black characters is this unsympathetic oppressive authority figure of a child labor center of nonblack kids and UH)

as i told some other people it just made me feel like i needed to take about ten showers afterward from a moral standpoint, and i want to think that was an intended part of the atmosphere but it never really got addressed the way i would have liked.

Oh yeah it actually wasn’t that she died that upset me, since like we knew from the beginning she was dying (iirc? Its been a while). What got me was the conflict with the daughter(/granddaughter??), especially when she interrupted the wedding—That scene really did make me so sad and angry that it ruined the movie for me. :-( But everyone has different buttons obviously! Personally raising a homophobic child is just an enormous fear of mine :-(

Ah, yeah, I understand where you’re coming from now! That part was definitely hard to watch. And like you said, everyone has their own buttons. Sorry I got defensive! I’m a little oversensitive these days, ha ha.
