Vancouver Island - August 7, Sunday

An early rise today as we were headed off for a journey to Vancouver Island and the capitol of British Columbia - the city of Victoria.

The driver of our luxury bus, Brent, met us in the lobby at 0740h. We made a few other pickups at other less salubrious lodgings, like the Marriot, Fairmont Downtown, and even a Travelodge, before hitting the highway toward Richmond and the BC Ferry terminal. We had 30 minutes waiting in the vehicle lineup and took advantage of the market there to checkout the shops and have a leak. Before long we were back on our luxury bus and driving onto the ship.

Our luxury bus drive on with several other coaches, large trucks and what seemed like hundreds of cars onto several different decks. The ferries here are ships like the one that goes from Melbourne to Tassie, except our journey was only one and a half hours, from the mainland to Vancouver Island and the capitol of British Columbia.

We sailed out through the Georgia Strait then past several islands where clearly wealthy people with cash to spare have log cabins and what looked like highly expensive summer houses. Exactly on time our ferry docked at Swartz Bay and we were back on our luxury bus and driving down the highway (Hwy 17) through Saanich toward the capital - Victoria, named after Queen Victoria when Vancouver Island was a separate British Colony to British Columbia.

Captain Cook, on his third voyage, 1776-1780, surveyed the island with one of his Midshipman George Vancouver, also onboard was the sail master William Bligh. Years later George Vancouver was exploring and it was 3rd Lt James Baker who spotted a volcano from HMS Discovery in 1792 so they named it after him. Mount Baker which can be seem from Vancouver and surrounds but is actually in Washington State USA.

We arrived in Downtown Victoria and Aaron, Rose, Hugo and Norah headed off the a Fish n’ Chip shop for lunch, apparently the best in the world.

It came with a one hour wait. Bernie toured Fan Tan alley, apparently the narrowest shopping lane in the world, famous for being in a motorcycle chase in a Mel Gibson movie.

After checking out the Main Street of Victoria we decided on a harbour side cafe which was on the harbour broad walk over looking the Legislature of British Columbia and the Emporess Hotel. I had the locally caught fish in batter with naturally cut fries while Bernie had two fish tacos also with locally cut fries. Mine came with a nice coleslaw as well, washed down by a cold ginger beer. Around us were many Canadians who were clearly suffering and wilting in the soaring temperatures induced by climate change, at 24oC Bernie were actually pretty comfortable though.

At 3pm Brent picked up was in the luxury bus and drove was to the world famous, in Canada, Butchard Gardens. Initially a but dubious about this part of the trip it turned out to be the best. The garden are truely spectacular and we all enjoyed our time there and wished for more. Hugo’s and my favourite was the Japanese garden while Bernie liked the sunken Garden, Rose’s favourite was the rose garden and Aaron and Norah liked the carousel, the Chinese dragon and the ice cream shop.

At 1745h we had to join our luxury bus for the drive thru Saanick back to Swartz Bay and on to the return to the mainland ferry. For the trip back we satin the top deck in the warm sun, surrounded by sweaty Cunaks who were jostling each other to get the cool breeze. We had spectacular views of the islands, the houses of the wealthy and the setting sun hitting Mount Baker in the distance.

After the drop offs we were back on the Vancouver waterfront by 2200h and asleep by 2202h, dreaming of flowers, tasty fish and the gently flowing water of Japanese gardens.

Reupholstering the seat, giving the bike a whole new custom bright red paint job, new high bars, grips, mirrors, painted engine, new exhaust, white wall tyres and all new cables to suit the high bars. The plan of attack was to strip the bike down to bare bones and cut the rear guard off completely, also removing the front guard and hand making new low slung chopper style guards from scratch. This was going to be a massive job and I had 6 weeks to make it happen in time for Christmas. Doug came to the shop and we sat down and went over photos of ideas he had for the build, after seeing the images I went straight to Doug’s house to pick up the postie and get started right away. I received a phone call from a gentleman named Doug who had a postie bike that he had big dreams for and planned on surprising his cousin with it when it was finished as a Christmas present. The primary goal was to turn the Postie into an eye-catching and entirely unique custom motorcycle that could be displayed at music festivals, be put into liquor stores, bars, and pubs that stock Young Henrys beer, and most importantly, the bike had to function as a draught beer dispenser including a tap, hoses, and cooling.

I cannot get enough of artist David Bromley’s home and atelier in Melbourne, Australia. The decrepit colonnades of the balcony house a bronze oriental crane, an Argentinian chandelier, French demijohns in blown glass, a ceramic "Middle Earth" vase and chairs by the Swedish Chris Martin . On the floor, the tiling is painted by hand.

Their home doubles as a studio, which can also be hired for launches and other events.

When they moved into the derelict building, it had once been a hotel and shopping arcade, and then a Turkish bath. It had no wiring or plumbing and pigeons had made it their home. Italian chairs surround a French oak table in the dining area.

A French plate rack and David Bromley mural add character to the kitchen.

A blue Murano glass chandelier, mid-century sculptures from Ghana, a Japanese university cabinet and paintings by David Bromley (on floor).

On the landing of one of the two staircases brushed with ocean blue pigment powder, a glass roof lights up Tom Ripon's red wire mesh ponies, two portraits of children, ceramic dishes and an embroidered chair - all by Bromley himself.  Also, a man in the red cap (anonymous), Argentinian chandeliers and a low Chinese buffet.

Posing in front of a work in progress, "The child with the moon", David and his wife Yu Yge, stylist, are surrounded by paintings by the Australian Mark Shaller and Victor Rubin, by the Japanese Ito and a bust of the former premier Australian Minister Thomas Playford.

Against the backdrop of op-art motifs, two colorful abstractions, a pair of Indian carnival statues and a Ferris wheel model.

In the office, above a fan-shaped window, a steel mobile of flying machines crafted by Bromley spins above a stool and coffee table. 

The dressing room features Moroccan lights, a Soviet painting, a shoemaker’s rack and French leather motorcycle panniers.

The dressing room showcases the original arched window visible from the street.

Balanced on a Victorian railing, a painted "Masked Boy" statue and, beside it, a bronze "Boy with hammer" plinth by Bromley.

In the studio, wall sketches of childish scenes, paintings of butterflies and birds and "Celebration", a welded bronze group of seven children playing, boy with slingshot and airplane model, all works by Bromley.

Next to the op-art mural at the head of the bed evoking an abyss, a series of children's games in paintings, as on the quilt, painted by David Bromley.

In the style-clashing but fabulous bathroom, a French stone basin sits  alongside an industrial brass tap and David Bromley painting.

Italian glass tiles create an out-of-the-ordinary bathroom. A David Bromley tapestry covers a French chair.
