My Lawnmower Died
My lawnmower died the other day.
I’ll admit that I’ve got a soft spot for the old battler. I bought him (I’ve always pictured my lawnmower as a crotchety old man who is rather fonder of booze than he should be) for $120 around eight years ago.
I lived in a place with a smaller yard back then, so I decided to just get the cheapest lawnmower I could find. It just so happened to be an electric mower (the kind you plug into an extension cord). It wasn’t a big deal at the time, but I eventually ended up moving to a place with a bigger yard and much more rugged terrain.
Did I give up on the old guy?
Not a chance.
I just got a 25 metre long extension cord and continued plugging away. Heck, there’s a long driveway with some grass up the front. What did I do? Connect the 25 metre extension cord to another 25 metre extension cord. No surrender.
The reviews for that mower said it was cheap, shoddy, and really only good for a year or two even on flat, easy lawns. Hah! Maybe most of his fellows were crappy, but my mower was a damn hero.
The old bastard lasted roughly eight years, and the majority of that was spent mowing a lawn that was sloped, uneven, and had rocks, roots, and all sorts of other debris around.
When he was around four years old, his motor started to go. Heck, he’d overheat when dealing with longer grass, and you could smell a combination of hot metal and melting plastic. His blade got chipped too, and the area around the base cracked and split, so grass would get wedged in there. One time, he even shut down completely for an hour due to the heat.
The grass outlet got deformed, so the catcher wouldn’t always fill up before grass started to back up and you’d have to stop, unplug the lawnmower, and manually dig the grass out before it could clog anything vital.
I also left him once to grab a drink. He was on flat ground, but somehow, he started rolling when I was on my way back, and I got to see him roll down the slope and over a small ‘cliff’. He cracked his casing, and I’m pretty sure that was when one of his wheels started going dodgy.
He lasted another four years or so although by the end, I couldn’t cut the grass quite as short as I used to. He just couldn’t get it done. His motor would seize up, and that burning smell would fill the air. Instead, I just cut the grass a bit longer, and he could manage that, even if he chugged something awful on the slopes and slowed down when the grass got even a bit thick. Each time I mowed, I’d wonder if maybe today was the day the motor finally kicked the bucket. Honestly, I’ve spent the last three years wondering if I should buy a new one. I could never quite bring myself to, not when he was still chugging along as best he could, battered but not beaten, tough without an ounce of quit in him.
All the same, the lawn looked great. In fact, the lawn looked just about picture perfect all the way to the end. You’d never know just how badly the lawnmower was damaged from looking at it. You’d think he was a top of the line model with all the bells and whistles, still new and sparkling, fresh out of the box, all shiny and chrome. I remember the neighbours commenting on how nice the lawn looked, how well cut it was. Not bad for a machine who wasn’t supposed to last more than a year or two, not bad for the cheapest mower from a brand known more for low prices than anything else.
The end came when one of the wheel just came right off with the most important parts crumbling to bits.
The lawnmower is so old and they don’t make his model anymore, so a spare wheel that fits costs enough that I can’t justify getting it, not with the motor sounding like its on the verge of death, not with the exterior ready to crumble too, and not with him needing a brand new blade as well. All those things added up make buying a new lawnmower the sensible thing to do.
But I have to take my hat off to the old fellow.
With a half-broken motor, a crumbling exterior, a chipped blade, and only three wheels... he still go the lawn mowed. In fact, I mowed the last 30% of the lawn with the wheel missing. It still came out looking great, and I’m glad he got to go out without leaving a job unfinished.
I don’t know if reincarnation is a thing for lawnmowers. But if it is, I hope that in his next life he really is a top of the line, all the bells and whistle, shiny and chrome, super premium lawnmower. I want people to look at him and say ‘Damn! Now, that’s a lawnmower!’.
I’ll probably head down to the store to get a new lawnmower in a week or two since it’ll take at least that long for the grass to need cutting again. I don’t know which one I’ll get, but I hope the new lawnmower has the same sort of fight in him as the old one.
Out of all my old gardening equipment, the lawnmower kicking the bucket makes the anvil lopper the oldest. He’s put in some work, let me tell you! Hopefully, he won’t be too lonely without his old buddy around.

How to Care for Your Gardening Tools: A Step-by-Step Guide
Caring for your Gardening Tools is an important part of caring for your garden. Additionally, the frequency with which you use some of your favourite equipment will fluctuate as your garden's needs change throughout the course of the year. I always recommend having your tools serviced regularly by your local gardening tools Dealer, but in-between visits, there are some basic things you can do yourself to keep them in tip-top shape.
Different Types of Gardening Tools and The Specific Care They Require
Gardening tools require regular care to ensure their effectiveness and longevity. After each use, remove any dirt or debris from the tools, especially from the blades or tines. This can be done using a brush or by rinsing them with water.
How to Care for Hedge Trimmers: Guide to Sharpening Blades
After each use, take a moment to give your hedge trimmers a wipe down. This simple step helps remove any debris or sap that may have accumulated on the blades.
To prevent rust and keep the blades in good condition, spray them with a Super Clean resin solvent. Lastly, run the machine for about 10 seconds to distribute the solvent and ensure the blades are well-coated. By following these steps, you can keep your hedge trimmers clean, sharp, and ready for the next use.
Maintenance of Hand Tools
For hand tools like secateurs, axes, hatchets, blades, and household shears, maintaining sharp blades is crucial. Plenty Mowers offers a convenient 3-in-1 sharpening tool for your garden that makes it incredibly easy to keep your blades in excellent condition.
Regularly sharpening your blades ensures clean and precise cuts while reducing the physical demand on you as the user. Additionally, a clean cut allows plants to heal properly, minimising the risk of infection.
By incorporating blade sharpening into your tool care routine, you'll enjoy improved performance and longevity from your hand tool.
Tumblr media
Lawn Mowers & Grass Trimmers
As the seasons change, so does the frequency of mowing your lawn and using grass trimmers. During the cooler months when the use of these gardening tools lessens, it's an ideal time to give them some extra attention.
Start by giving your lawn mower a deep clean. Remove any grass clippings or debris that may be stuck under the housing. Pay special attention to the catcher and ensure it's thoroughly cleaned as well.
It's also a great opportunity to inspect your mower blades. If they appear dull or damaged, consider taking them to your local Lawn Care Dealer for replacement. By maintaining a clean and sharp mower, you'll achieve better cutting results and prolong the life of your equipment. Click here to know how to maintain a lawn mower.
Similar to lawn mowers, grass trimmers also benefit from a thorough cleaning after a busy spring and summer season. By doing it now, you can ensure your trimmer is ready to go as soon as spring arrives. Additionally, during periods of less use, it's recommended to store your trimming line in water. This simple step helps keep the line soft and flexible, preventing it from becoming brittle and prone to snapping.
Chainsaws & Pole Pruners - Best Gardening Tools
While some equipment enjoy a well-earned break during the cooler months, pole pruners and chainsaws are at their best in the winter. Sharp chains are essential for ensuring peak performance. A dull chain can significantly impact the tool's efficiency and make the job more challenging than necessary.
Therefore, sharpening the chain is the first area you should check. Plenty mowers provide valuable resources on keeping your chain sharp, and it's a good practice to rotate the guide bar each time you sharpen the chain.
Additionally, remember to keep the bars on your chainsaws and pole pruners lubricated. STIHL BioPlus, a vegetable-based, high-performance lubricant, is an excellent choice as it degrades completely in the soil in a short period, offering environmental benefits.
Throughout the winter, especially if you use your chainsaw or pole pruner regularly, it's important to keep them clean. After each use, take the time to clean the sprocket nose, bar groove, cooling fins, oil inlet hole, and oil outlet channel. Regular cleaning prevents debris buildup and helps maintain optimal performance.
Battery-Powered Tool Storage
These tools are built to last, and the care you take of them directly impacts their longevity. It's important to note that different considerations apply depending on the power source of your tool.
For battery-powered tool, proper storage is crucial. It's recommended to store the battery and the tool separately in a dry, frost-free location away from direct sunlight. Use the Storage Box to store the battery. This helps protect the battery and prolong its lifespan.
As for the battery itself, it's best to maintain a charge level between 40-60% or with two bars rather than fully charged or completely depleted. We provide a helpful guide on how to store and get the most out of your batteries, offering valuable tips for their care and maintenance.
Tumblr media
Petrol-Powered Tool Storage
For petrol-powered tools, it's important to prepare them for winter by emptying the tanks in a well-ventilated area. Over time, the volatile matter in fuel can evaporate in the tank, causing it to lose its combustibility. By emptying the tanks, you can avoid potential starting issues when spring arrives.
As a solution to this, STIHL MotoMix offers an optimised 50:1 premixed fuel suitable for all two-stroke engines. This patented fuel formula, using STIHL's premium HP ultra, provides a clean and hassle-free alternative for owners of petrol-powered tool. Utilising STIHL MotoMix can simplify your tool maintenance routine and ensure reliable starting performance when you need it.
By following these comprehensive care guidelines for your garden tools, you can extend their lifespan, enhance their performance, and enjoy a well-maintained garden throughout the year. Remember, the better care you take of your tools, the longer they'll be with you, providing you with efficient and reliable service.

The global ride-on mower market is forecasted to be valued at US$ 4530.0 million by 2032, up from US$ 3040.0 million in 2022, advancing at a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period. Ride-on mower is a type of garden or lawnmower which is operated by the user while sitting on it, unlike other mowers that are operated by being towed or pushed. The ride-on mower is similar to a small tractor which is attached to blades designed to mow large expansions of grass such as lawns or golf courses and even parks.
The Zero flip trip-on mower can be customized in step with the want of utilization; it could be converted into a mulching mower using a mulch plug which adds an advantage to the usage of the ride-on mower and is also a capacity factor for the trip-on mower market increase.
Journey-on mower is to be had in one-of-a-kind sizes depending on the mowing width, engine length, layout transmission including automated or manual, and catcher characteristics. Ride-on mower also comes with a strong source requirement, and possibly choose gasoline injected engine or you’ll opt for an electric riding mower which is likewise an energy green supply.

What is the Process of Grass Cutting?
Grass cutting is an essential element of lawn maintenance, serving both aesthetic and practical purposes. The process involves using specialised equipment like lawnmowers to trim the grass in a systematic and controlled manner. To start, one needs to prepare the necessary tools and inspect the lawn for any obstacles.
Tumblr media
Grass cutting is a common lawn maintenance task that involves trimming or mowing the grass to maintain a neat and well-kept appearance. Here's a step-by-step process for grass cutting:
Prepare Equipment: Gather the necessary equipment for grass cutting, including a lawnmower, fuel or power source (for gas or electric mowers), safety gear (gloves, goggles, and ear protection), and a grass catcher if desired.
Inspect the Lawn: Walk around the lawn area to check for any obstacles, debris, or items that could potentially damage the lawnmower or pose a safety hazard. Remove any toys, rocks, or debris from the grass.
Adjust Mower Height: Set the cutting height on your lawnmower to your desired level. Typically, it's recommended to cut no more than one-third of the grass blade's height in a single mowing to maintain a healthy lawn.
Start the Mower: If you're using a gas-powered mower, make sure it's filled with fuel and oil as needed. For electric mowers, ensure it's properly connected to a power source.
Mow in an Overlapping Pattern: Start mowing at one edge of the lawn and push the lawnmower in a straight line. Continue mowing in overlapping rows to ensure an even cut. Avoid making sharp turns, as this can create uneven patches.
Trim Edges: After mowing the main lawn area, use a string trimmer or edger to trim the grass along the edges of the lawn, around trees, and near obstacles.
Bag or Mulch: Depending on your preference, you can either collect the grass clippings in a grass catcher bag attached to the mower or let the mower mulch the clippings back into the lawn. Mulching can provide nutrients to the soil.
Cleanup: Once you've finished mowing, clean up any remaining grass clippings and debris from the lawn and surrounding areas.
Maintenance: After each use, clean and maintain your lawn mower, such as sharpening the blades and checking for any necessary repairs.
Regular Schedule: Establish a regular grass-cutting schedule based on the growth rate of your grass and the season. Typically, grass cutting is done every 1-2 weeks during the growing season.

Tips and Tricks on Grass Cutting
Maintain Your Mower: Regularly service and maintain your lawnmower by cleaning the blades, changing the oil, and sharpening the cutting blades. A well-maintained mower will provide a cleaner cut.
Adjust the Cutting Height: Set your mower's cutting height according to the type of grass and the season. For cool-season grasses, cut higher in summer and lower in winter, and vice versa for warm-season grasses.
Follow the "One-Third Rule": Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade's height in a single mowing. This helps maintain a healthy lawn and minimises stress on the grass.
Mow When Dry: It's best to mow when the grass is dry, as wet grass can result in uneven cuts and clog the mower. Plus, it's safer for you to operate the mower on dry grass.
Vary Your Mowing Pattern: Change the direction in which you mow your lawn each time. This prevents soil compaction and keeps the grass from leaning in one direction.
Overlap Passes: Overlap each pass slightly to ensure that no grass is missed. This helps in achieving an even cut and avoiding "stripes" of uncut grass.
Use Mulching Blades: If you prefer to mulch the grass clippings back into the lawn, consider using a mower with specialised mulching blades. This recycles nutrients back into the soil.
Bag or Compost Clippings: If you collect grass clippings in a bag, consider composting them, as they can be a valuable source of organic matter for your garden.
In conclusion, grass cutting is an integral aspect of lawn maintenance that requires precision and attention to detail. Proper grass cutting techniques are essential not only for maintaining a well-groomed and attractive lawn but also for ensuring the overall health and safety of outdoor spaces. Whether performed by individuals, gardening services in Singapore, or professional landscapers, the process involves using specialised equipment, adhering to recommended cutting heights, and following best practices to achieve a lush, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing grassy landscape.

How Selecting A Mower Is A Tricky Thing
While trimming the lawn might seem mundane and sometimes trying, it needn't be. Undoubtedly the upkeep of a fresh, emerald swath can be very therapeutic, provided you have the right tools for the job, nevertheless, it can also be an actual pain in the butt if you find yourself ill-outfitted. As a result, we're dedicating a piece straight to the suitable mower for any domestic site or turf type, as well as considering their family member benefits and drawbacks, such as price, effectiveness, and durability. To begin with, there are 3 standard mower styles - Rotary, Cyndrical Tube, and Hover. Beginning with a cylinder, you have the most flexible type of mower. They are offered as either hands-on models (hence holding the honor of least expensive), gasoline, or electrically powered. Almost any kind of contemporary mower will certainly have either a static or removable collection box developed into the back to collect cuttings, as well as the cylinder design functions based on a vertically revolving blade and, of the three selections will supply the neatest, most uniform cut. Due to these qualities, the cylinder is generally assigned for formal grass, where a very route is required. As a result, various accessory rotors are available to give personalized height patterns for the individual. Next, we have the rotating lawn mower, which functions similarly to the cylindrical tube yet with one secret distinction - the blades relocate in a straight, as opposed to vertical, fashion. Because of this distinction, the rotary is extra-matched to varying surfaces in the yard, especially inclines and dips. Finally, the hover lawn mower and also, despite its futuristic description, it is not without its problems, the foremost of which being power consumption, although it is conveniently the most hassle-free to handle due to its close to weightlessness once activated, nevertheless, the distance from the surface can make it unstable for consistent length. Like its rivals, it can additionally be restricted by the trailing electrical wire, which will restrict the location it can pleasantly maintain, however, unlike the competitors, there is no sensible alternate source of power for the hover mower. We currently come to the eco-friendly and monetary fight of the mowers as well. While cabled and gas fuelled styles will guarantee the alternative of self-propulsion, this enhancement will incur additional expense, not just at first yet in years to come, whenever the equipment remains in use. Additionally, a petroleum mower is one of the most eco-harmful tools that can go into the yard due to its cumulative carbon footprint. Sometimes self-propulsion is a need when taking care of very large locations of turf or particularly unwelcoming surface, nevertheless, if environmental soundness is your issue, then you ought to take into consideration the hand-operated lawn mower. While they'll call for better maintenance because of their mainly metallic structure, they'll make certain zero carbon discharge and far friendlier looking electricity expense, in addition to supplying a place of exercise at the same time. On a side note, the question of a yard catcher should not be overlooked. While it's unusual for horticulturalists who does not to enjoy the aroma of fresh cuttings in the yard, by conserving the detritus, you can guarantee an excellent and also normal composting product - as well as one you can depend on suit the needs of your garden because that's where it came from. Also, the grass isn't secure from the intrusion of technology. You probably already know about the robot lawn mowers that manufacturers like Husqvarna pledge will certainly supply the best automatic trim. However, many more ecologically audio variations are available that come full with a solar billing network. However, the drawback of these innovative mowers is their reliance on great sunlight to run, which is usually the best reason to get involved in the garden and do it yourself!

Why you need to schedule a time to service your mowers As a lawn mowing business owner, you know that properly maintaining your equipment is crucial to running your business smoothly. By regularly servicing your lawnmowers, trimmers, and other equipment, you can avoid costly repairs down the road and keep your fleet running like new. Simple things like sharpening your blades once a month will make it much easier for something like a wet cut or a new lawn. Book time to do machine maintenance in your diary. Scheduling your servicing is easy when you are working solo and know the amount of work your machine is doing. You can just schedule a time to service your machine as you need it. My maintenance routine I pull out all my mowers on the first Saturday of the month. These are the basic things you should do when you service your mowers. Read the owner's manual. Before you do anything else, make sure you read and understand the owner's manual for your particular make and model of lawn mower Check the oil level and change it if necessary. Every lawn mower has an oil reservoir that you need to keep filled for the engine to run correctly. I still change the oil every few months. Clean or replace the air filter. Checking and cleaning (or replacing) the air filter regularly will help keep your engine running strong. Sharpen the blades. Sharpening (or replacing) the blades on your lawn mower at least once per season will ensure that your mower is always performing at its best. Clean the underdeck area. The area under the deck of your lawn mower can become caked with grass clippings, dirt, and debris over time. Also, spend some time cleaning the catcher. Good airflow is essential right through the cutting area and catcher. Lubricate moving parts as needed. Many parts of a lawn mower – such as spindles, wheels, levers, etc. – Refer to your owner's manual to find out which parts need to be lubricated and how often; in general, it's a good idea to lubricate all moving parts at least once per season. Tighten loose bolts & screws Finally, it's always a good idea to walk around your lawn mower(s) and tighten any loose bolts or screws you may find. Bonus: If your mower stops on the job. Often can get a mower or weedeater to start running again by replacing the spark plug or removing the air filter. By following these simple tips regularly, you can keep your lawn mowing equipment running smoothly for years to come.

Might have to quit animal control.
I put newspaper down in a pen for Pekoe at the municipal garage and left her there for the night. Jon was mowing grass late and when he put the mower away he decided to take her out for a potty break. I did not ask him to do this and I preferred he wouldn't. I am tired of him and his family "helping" me do my job. Anyway, someone going by on an ATV stopped and asked Jon where he got the dog from. Jon told him the dog catcher picked it up and the guy told him that, no, actually he knew who's dog she is (exactly who we thought) and that she was stolen out of their yard this morning (a lie, she was sitting in the middle of the highway). The dude then proceeded to call the dog catcher a "crackhead" and that pissed Jon off and he gave him the "the person you're calling a crackhead is my girlfriend 😡" so he outted me to someone that I'm the dog catcher. This dude then told Jon to watch his back.
So suffice to say I'm pretty fucking pissed.

One of the most abundant animals in the world that you have never heard of (this may sound like one of those click catcher phrases on the Internet, but it is not).  In this case we are talking about  (and pictured here) Apallates particeps, collected also in this case by George Foster, one of the few Chloropid specialists in the world.  If you were to stand in a lawn (perhaps not a pesticide laden one) you would be surrounded by, and perhaps standing upon, literally thousands of this species and its kin.  Yet, you would not know that because they are less than 2mm in size and they are not interested in you in any way.  It appears ("appears" is the right word since we really don't have a lot of details) that they might feed on plant blood that oozes from wounds caused by other insects and perhaps may be one of the few things that actually responds positively to the cutting of grass.  On the other side of the coin, this also means that when you mow your grass you also are literally the agent of death for 10's of thousands of creatures.  Now that we told you... can you not un hear (Gramatical side note:  "not un" is what is called a "near" double negative) the despairing cries as you approach with your mower?    Another reason to delawnify and inspect your new found moral dilemma of how it is that you can save Monarchs but then turn to kill untold thousands of Apallates. Shame.

Friendly reminder that gasonline-free lawnmowers still exist.
Here’s the one I bought last year:
Tumblr media
Cost: $59.48 with Amazon Prime. Here is the link.
It weights like, maybe 20lbs, needs no fuel, button pressing, or string pulling, to run.
All you have to do. Is push it forward. And putting it together is ridiculously easy. All you pretty much have to do is put the handle (two pieces, as you can see in the picture) together, and then attach it to the bottom part.
And if you don’t like this one, here’s a link to Walmart’s website where they have some: https://www.walmart.com/search/?cat_id=0&query=reel+mower
And Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/s/reel%2520mower?NCNI-5
And you could probably find them on Ebay if you wanted to.
I am never, I repeat, NEVER going back to a normal gas mower.
For one thing, my tiny wimpy arms aren’t strong enough to pull on the rope to get it started by myself. For another, the vibration while I’m pushing makes my arms go numb. Not to mention you have to constantly buy gas, and it might just fucking stop working for no apparent reason. And if you run over a stick or something it can send it flying like a missile. Plus it’s loud as shit and also not good for your lawn anyways.
Reel mowers are quiet, light weight, and ridiculously easy to use. No vibration, no string you need to pull, and you don’t have to waste money buying gas. Or waste time because you forgot it was out of gas.
The only drawback I’ve experienced so far is that if you try to mow wet grass it likes to stick to the blades. But that’s it. That’s the only drawback. And you can still mow, you just have to use a broom to sweep the grass off the blades every now and then.
There are also versions that come with a grass catcher that attaches to the back if you like composting, but I usually just end up raking it or leaving it where it is.
Anyways, yeah. If you want to save yourself time, money, and a headache, try out a reel mower.
