something i think is really interesting about dungeon meshi is the cast's respective views on food as the story progresses. the way many adventurers get through the dungeon is to eat when they Must, but mostly rely on healing magic to keep going when they're tired or beaten down. death is something you can buy your way out of, here.

having these lower stakes when it comes to running yourself too hard has made a lot of people in this setting kind of devalue food and what it does for you.

im not all the way through the manga yet, but so far i really like how it goes about debunking that mindset.

it seems like to most folks, food is either a decadent luxury, like when the governor offers mr tance a feast as a show of power and wealth, (although he is the only one who actually eats in that scene as he talks about his ambitions);

[id: the governor and mr. tance talk politics and hierarchies, while the governor eats from a bowl. mr. tance's meal is not visible behind a speech bubble.

"so you believe the sorceror is an elf?" he asks.

"i can't say with absolute certainty," mr. tance replies, "but the spells are not ones dwarves and humans typically use." /end id]

like the painted-royal feasts laios tries to partake in that never actually nourish him...

or, to the working class, it's pretty much exclusively fuel. i'm thinking about the scene where kabru's party, ostensibly intended to be our view into how adventuring Typically goes for most people, is shown preparing to go to the dungeon by like. walking up to someone and ordering 'a weeks' worth of rations.' purely functional.

kabru says "i need a week's worth of rations for six, and two days' worth of water."

"sure thing." the merchant then reaches behind him and grabs a large cube-shaped package, wrapped in nondescript cloth and tied in place. it thumps onto the counter in front of them both. /end id]

when kabru hands mickbell his food for the trip, he complains about how heavy it is on his back. it's a necessary liability.

we also see chilchuck, in an early chapter where there isn't much food to go around, grumbling about how he used to be better at not noticing when he was hungry. he's frustrated that he's more attuned to his bodily needs, now that he's starting to fill them with regularity.

(like im not even gonna lie this is a big mood. the healing process is really really annoying)

even laios, early on, working out the logistics of going back for falin, considers his expenses and ultimately the thing he decides to save money on is their food supply. like, even the guy most invested in eating as an experience kind of just assumes he will Figure It Out. its what hes eating, not how hes eating it that matters to him at that point.

he responds "let's just cook them, like normal." /end id]

but its here that senshi introduces the idea of food as art and as healing. its exciting and its fascinating for laios, getting to taste the creatures hes been reading about and fighting, but i dont think it would ever really help him feel full if not for this.

what they did last time isnt going to work. falin is gone, and constantly anesthetizing their pain and healing through their weakness is no longer a realistic option for the party. in order to make it through they must all relearn how to eat well, one by one and as a group over and over again, because its either that or nothing.

one of my favorite depictions of this idea thus far is when marcille is seriously low on health and mana, and both of these problems are mitigated by taking care of herself, and trying to get iron and protein

she watches senshi grill pieces of kelpie liver on a low fire, while laios ties a bib around her neck. /end id]

and drinking a bunch of dead water spirits. she gets the idea, she's supposed to get in nutrients and it'll help her feel better, but in aiming for the quick, inefficient fix, namely chugging that shit down like she heard it was good to Stay Hydrated and decided that would be the thing that fixes her,

she gasps out "...the magical energy stored in nature spirits is actually quite hard to absorb. even if you drink a lot, the majority of it is excreted without being absorbed," and takes another drink. "that's why i need to drink as much as i can."

laios says weakly "you'll get water poisoning," but marcille only stops when senshi puts a hand on her shoulder and says,

"it's easier to absorb nutrients if ye digest them with food. that's a fundamental rule of nutrition."

marcille says, "senshi..." contemplative

and he holds out a bowl of tentuclus and a thumbs up. "let's get cooking!" /end id]

she doesn't immediately realize the answer is that she needs more than that. she's been working hard. she needs care, and she needs nourishment.

once she gets that, though, she makes her boiled water into a stew, and she works to make that stew as good as she can, and everyone can have some.

because in dungeon meshi, to feed yourself or allow yourself to be fed is treated as performing a kindness for yourself. food is what propels you, but there is also an art and a joy inherent to the process of making it; in the way you feel when you've had enough to eat.

when you're working through disordered eating habits, you really do have to keep learning this shit. (in my experience, learning about cooking is one of the best ways to do so.)

i'll have to see if my thesis holds up as i continue, but i think one of the reasons the portrayal here resonates with me so hard is that ryoko kui puts most of her characters at eye level with me on this. they're all working at it, too. the text and i are both commiserating, and encouraging each other, 'have some more, you'll feel better.'

It's time to maybe hit the first plot milestone? While wearing some silly costumes, of course!

Maybe it's just been a while but I AM a little bit confused. They were down in the dungeon and then they were about 4 floors deep and went DEEPER and now there's... an island? That belonged to the dwarves, elves and humans? (Humans being different from tall-men? Or... is this another translation thing?) But if it's that deep, how did it belong to anyone before the dungeon was discovered?? I need history books up in here.

Huh, interesting. Is this a permanent gate? Or one that only opens when the spell is cast from the other side?

Absolutely intrigued with these Vex/Vax knockoffs. What is their deal? They haven't said that much, but their facial expressions intrigue me.

Hmmm.. I suppose in terms of economics, the dungeon must seem like a goldmine indeed. And if you can exploit whatever you can get from it...... Though in the end, is it a sustainable source of resources? Especially given how many people die there.

I reiterate: would love a history book that gives a more detailed explanation of how the sociopolitical map of the region is laid out, and how the discovery of the dungeon played into whatever conflicts they had.

Ah yes, a classic. That one spell with no karmic repercussions, I'm sure.

This gnome complained about how the Dungeon makes people too much money, but it turns out that his REAL issue is that it's the money that this dungeon-era CEO is concerned about. He wants to go HARDER on the evil power control scheme. He's disappointed with the lack of commitment to the villainy!

Or..... is this some sort of 4D chess play to get adventurers more resources...? What is his end goal here?

Xenophilius Lovegood x Madeline Potter

Description: It’s Parent-Teacher Night at Hogwarts, which meant Madeline could escape the archives and meet parents. She seemed to especially hit it off with Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna’s father.

It was Parent-Teacher Night at Hogwarts. It had been a while considering all that happened, but Professor Dumbledore wanted to make the students feel as normal as possible given the circumstances. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named potentially returning after all that’s happened seemed to be putting almost everyone on edge. So, the headmaster planned the small event. Since Madeline worked there and was already friends with the teachers she felt no reason to participate, so she called in Sirius, Gaia and Cecelia to do the job.

As she worked on tidying up the archives of the school, she received a message from Professor McGonagall. The professor misplaced the file of Luna Lovegood’s Transfiguration grades and work ethic, so she asked the Potter girl to bring her the extra copy. Madeline got to work searching for the file immediately. 

Usually she’d just send it to her with magic, but since it was a special occasion she figured she’d say hi to some parents and take the file to McGonagall. So that’s what she did. She stopped a few times to talk to some parents that she knew before finally getting to the Transfigurations classroom. She knocked three times before walking in.

There were three people in there: Professor McGonagall of course, Luna Lovegood and someone else. After examining him once, she reasoned he must be her father considering the identical color of their hair and their clothing styles. All three of them turned to face her upon hearing her at the door, but Luna was the first one to react.

“Madeline!” She called happily, running over to the woman. Madeline laughed as the girl wrapped her arms around her waist.

“Hello Luna. I love your dress, did you make it yourself?” She asked, hugging her for only a second before pulling away. Luna nodded with a proud smile.

“Yes ma’am,” she responded before leading the woman to the other two adults. Professor McGonagall smiled fondly at the interaction before resting a hand on Luna’s father’s arm.

“Xenophilius, this is the Hogwarts archivist, Madeline Potter. Madeline, this is Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna’s father,” she introduced. Madeline switched the girl’s file to her non-dominant hand to shake the man’s hand.

“Lovely to meet you, Mr. Lovegood. Your daughter is a joy to have around.” Xenophilius smiled at her words and nodded.

“Yes, she’s quite literally the light of my life. It’s lovely to meet you ma’am, and please call me Xeno. It’s much easier.” Madeline giggled and nodded.

“Then you can call me Madeline or Maddy,” she replied simply. He nodded with a smile before realizing they were still shaking hands. She noticed at the same time and they pulled away quickly, laughing nervously.

“Do you have the girl’s file, Madeline?” McGonagall cut in. Madeline and Xenophilius snapped out of whatever tance they seemed to be in and faced the teacher. 

“I do,” she responds politely, handing over the file. “Is there anything else?” She asked, clasping her hands behind her back.

“No, but you might as well stay. I won’t need this after they move on to the next professor,” McGonagall responded before opening said file. Madeline was surprised, but opted to stay anyways. She leaned against the desk as she watched the professor discuss Luna’s previous work ethic. Her eyes lingered on Xenophilius the longest. He didn’t really seem to be paying attention to Professor McGonagall’s words. His eyes glanced around the room until they landed on Madeline. Their eyes met, and Madeline gave him a small smile. He began to return it, but McGonagall spoke a bit louder.

“Mr. Lovegood?” She called, catching both of their attention once again. Xenophilius faced her quickly then chuckled awkwardly. He glanced at Madeline one more time before turning to the woman.

“Sorry Professor. You were saying?” The older woman gave him a patient smile and continued talking. Madeline continued watching, almost entranced. There was something about him that pulled her in. Maybe it was his personality or dashing looks, but she felt like she wanted to continue talking to him. 

“Well, thank you for your time, Xenophilius,” McGonagall spoke once all was said and done. The man in question nodded and held out his hand.

“Thank you for keeping my Luna in line,” he joked as the professor shook his hand. 

“Oh yes, because that’s something that I have to do often,” she responded sarcastically. That made both Luna and Madeline laugh. Once the two let go, Xenophilius faced the latter.

“It was lovely to meet you, Madeline. I do hope to see you next time I visit here,” he spoke softly, holding out his hand. The girl shook his hand with a kind smile.

“Likewise Xenophilius.” Luna smiled at the woman and gave her a hug when they let go. Madeline hugged the girl and hummed happily.

“And you little miss, stay out of trouble, yeah?” She said affectionately. The girl nodded before stepping closer to her dad.

“Come on, I want you to meet Calypsa’s mom,” she said, grasping her father’s arm and pulling him out of the room. Madeline watched with a small grin. 

“The Lovegoods are quite something, huh?” Professor McGonagall inquired as she held out the spare file for the other woman. 

“They are,” she confirmed, facing the professor. She took the file then watched in confusion as the woman opened a drawer in her desk.

“You might as well take this one as well. I have no use for it anymore,” McGonagall spoke, holding out yet another file. Madeline took it curiously and read the title. It was the original file for Luna Lovegood.

“You set me up!” She realized aloud, a laugh of disbelief leaving her lips. “You knew that Mr. Lovegood and I would hit it off so you pretended to lose Luna’s file.”

“I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about,” McGonagall responded innocently as she sat at her desk. “And I believe he told you to call him Xeno,” she added, giving her a teasing smile. Madeline blushed shyly and shook her head. 

“I’m leaving now Minnie,” she announced, beginning to walk out.

“How many times do I have to tell you-” the professor gave her a reprimanding look, but Madeline just turned around with a smug smile.

“I’m no longer your student dear Minerva. Haven’t been in a decade,” she called in return as she walked backwards out of the room, holding the door open for a younger student and his parents. The girl began making her way down to the archives, pausing briefly to talk with Professor Dumbledore. He offered to walk her the rest of the way, and they made small talk as they strolled down the butling corridors. Just before they reached the stairs of said archives, someone called her name from behind them. 

“Miss Potter! Madeline!” It was Xenophilius Lovegood, much to the girl’s shock. He was jogging up to her, and the two had to step back before he ran into them. 

“Is there something I can help you with, Mr. Lovegood?” She asked curiously. Dumbledore excused himself from the conversation to talk to Professor McGonagall not far away, but Madeline could tell they were listening in. Xenophilus breathed heavily from the run, and gave her a smile that left her breathless. 

“I-I’m sorry if I’ve caught you at a bad moment,” he started through breaths, but Madeline only shook her head with a fond smile.

“It’s okay. You haven’t,” she responded kindly. “What can I help you with?” Xenophilius finally caught his breath and rested his hands on his hips. 

“Are you uh- are you doing anything this weekend?” He asked, obviously nervous. That confused Madeline further. 

“Well, no. Why do you ask?” She asked curiously. He perked up at her response. 

“Would you like to accompany me to dinner Saturday evening?” The question surprised her, but in a pleasant way. A blush settled on her cheeks and she smiled shyly. 

“I’d love to,” she replied coyly, pushing some hair behind her ear.

“Really?” He asked, having to physically hold back his excitement.

“Yes, really. Just send me the details, yeah?” She giggled at the end of her sentence at his eagerness. Xenophilius caught himself and straightened himself out. 

“Wonderful,” he spoke, now much calmers. “I guess I’ll see you this weekend.” With that, he took her hand and placed a kiss on her knuckles. As she blushed at the action, Dumbledore glanced at McGonagall.

“I told you this would work, Minerva,” he muttered smugly. McGonagall rolled her eyes but couldn’t help the smile that graced her face.

“I guess so,” was all she responded with before facing the other two. Madeline and Xenophilius bid each other farewell and the latter began making his way down the hallway back to his daughter. When Madeline turned to the stairs, she heard him call her name once more.

“Oh, and Madeline?” He called once more, turning around. Once she faced him again, he gave her a teasing smile.

“Call me Xeno.”
