I sat down with CIRCO to dive into the world of getting up. From his inspirations to favorite styles, and even some advice for aspiring artists, this interview is a must-read for anyone curious about the graff scene in the Midwest.

What inspires your graffiti artwork?

After I got in trouble with the law for the first time as a juvenile, it had me pumped! After my first arrest, I started watching MSK Augor and Revok. What captured me was "Piece by Piece" - everything from the styles to philosophy to the images. When I envision graffiti, to me it is Giant One, MTNW, DREAM, and TWISTO.

How do you choose locations for your pieces?

That's federal not gonna lie.

Do you feel connected to the communities where you paint?

Not entirely, I used to have a belief that we were all in this together, but now, fuck the community I'm connected to the art.

Have you faced legal consequences for your graffiti?

I did ; it was karma. I had no mentor and was doing the don'ts in graffiti, which bit my ass - karma or what goes around comes around. I got arrested, and I remember the cops being quite depraved, trying to confuse my sexuality by throwing a bunch of bullshit in the air, trying to pin me for a drug dealer and potential crimes I've never committed. The manipulation opened my eyes to the fact that life isn't black and white, but I deserved it. I was just a young, inexperienced kid, making mistakes.

Why did you choose your graffiti tag/name?

No comment.

What techniques or styles do you prefer?

Today is more about ups than style. I bomb from time to time. One day, I saw a burner on a train that had my head spinning for hours. I knew I wanted to be more of a style writer, if anything. That's a motherfucker to pull off, and just to get a piece or a burner down is more than bombing for me.

How has the graffiti scene evolved?

I used to bump into some people when we were all bombing at some point, but now we are all just doing our own thing. Some of us are focused on bombing and piecing, so it's pretty mixed for the moment.

Do you collaborate with other artists?

I might have to do that someday.

How do you think the public perceives graffiti?

I see that it is accepted more; you see murals around. I believe that if it's fresh and illegal, and has something that no one has seen, it amazes people. Regardless of any law or shit, the public will love it.

Any advice for aspiring graffiti writers?

Don't let people fuck with you. It's pretty harsh when I go bombing and half of my stuff is gone - from buffs to disses, and a lot of people will look down on you. It will show who's there and how many blessings you still have in life. If you have the vision, intellect, and discipline, you will succeed. My best advice is to stay sober during anything related to graffiti and not let everyone know your next move.
