Hi I heard Mudpaw Whitepaw brothers, I must know more
(in reference to this post)
anon you sent this ask back in may of 2023. I am. so sorry. it took me this long to respond
please, as a token of my apology, take this very late art

The mudpaw-whitepaw-pseudo-brothers thing is an idea that goes back to nearly the beginning. Back in 2022, when I was still throwing ideas at the wall of my mind and seeing what stuck, I had the idea of Mudpaw and Whitepaw being cousins/half brothers (same dad, moms would've been sisters. much familial drama would've ensued). This, obviously, did not make it into the final version of the story, but the idea of Mudpaw and Whitepaw being sort-of-siblings has been in the back of my mind the whole time. With Doveheart acting as something of a foster mother to Mudkit, he would've spent a bit more time around Whitekit compared to the others in the nursery. That being said, I don't think they were ever especially close, emotionally. Whitekit was probably more like "so who is this guy taking MY mama's attention??" in his little baby brain lol

The shut eye video by @rileys-battlecats was so good I’ve been watching it over and over again, and had it on loop while drawing this!
My idea for this was that Ospreyclaw was dragged down by the spirits of starclan
Whether it’s the cats that died during the flood or ancestors is up to you!
I included the time lapse because I think it’s fun to have sometimes :>
But yeah seriously go check out their video it’s so good! You can enjoy it all on its own without having to know mudlore

I think you mentioned somewhere that the rest of Micaclan was kind of standoffish with Mudpaw, and only after Wrentail’s death did the clan go easier on him under the impression he was in mourning (although, idk if this has been retconned)
If it’s not a spoiler, what was the rest of the clans impression and relationship with Mudpaw at this point in the story? im especially curious to know what owlpounce thought of him before taking him on as a mentor
(I really enjoy the micaclan series and the amount of thought you put into each character and storyline!!!)
ok first off I'd like to apologize for how long it took me to answer this, SECOND I would like to say EEEEEE YAY IM GLAD YOU LIKE THE STORY AND CHARACTERS YIPPEE
As for your question, yes, the clan has, up until Wrentail's very tragic accident, been very standoffish with Mudpaw. Not necessarily consciously, mind you; they have some internal biases and cultural issues they need to address as a clan where it comes to perceived outsiders. They were never malicious in their treatment of him, just... neglectful. Each member of the clan tended to assume that someone else was taking care of him.
After Wrentail's death, it brought Mudpaw into the spotlight, as it were. Suddenly, everyone is very conscious of the fact that this young cat has gone through an assumedly painful loss, are more cognizant of his need for support, and, most importantly, are willing to offer that support. Mudpaw has more eyes on him. Cats are more aware of him than they once were. Where before the clan was more likely to give Mudpaw a wide berth and generally ignore him, they now are confronted with their own negligence, and are taking steps to rectify it.
Before, Mudpaw was basically a non-entity to the clan. A living ghost, flitting among them, not taking up any more space than necessary, not bringing attention to himself. Quiet. If a cat were to think of him, it was generally in the thought of HawkpawPuddlepawWhitepawMudpaw, not just Mudpaw. He'd be lumped in with "the apprentices".
When Owlpounce first thought to take him on as an apprentice, her impression of Mudpaw was that he was quiet, and contemplative. A deep thinker. Perhaps a bit reckless. He's ended up in her medicine den more than any of the other apprentices, after all. Though, she is willing to admit, it could have been the influence of Wrentail. Embertooth, Wrentail's previous apprentice, had ended up in the medicine den plenty of times back during his apprentice days, too. And that deep scratch over Mudpaw's eye, the one she'd had to patch up a few moons ago... that had been from Wrentail going too hard in training. She'd had words with him afterward. Claws out while training, Starclan help her, even if it'd been the apprentice's idea, Wrentail is—was a senior warrior. He should have known better.
In any case. She knows she doesn't know Mudpaw very well, but then again, she doesn't know any of the apprentices very well. They tend to stay out of the medicine den when they can, not fond of the scent of the herbs or her tendency to fuss. She knows he is quiet. She knows he is hurting. And she knows what Starclan told her—that he needs to be trained as a healer. And, she will admit, she is already growing fond of him. He reminds her of her old mentor, Buckfoot, with his stilted attempts at conversation and contemplative nature. She thinks he'll grow to be a fine medicine cat.

i have a question, what is the diet of micaclan??
I think they eat a pretty wide variety of things! There's no shortage of prey around Micaclan's current territory, so they've got lots of options. Plus, with their history of having to pick up the whole clan and change territories, i think they wouldn't have been able to afford to be picky eaters. I think that attitude carried over to their descendants, so the clan as a whole will eat just about anything that gets caught (though i imagine they still have favorites)
Living close to water, they have access to frogs and toads, small fish, maybe even the occasional turtle if they can figure out how to get through the shell. Lizards are another option, though those would be more of a quick snack, given their small size. Non-venomous snakes might make their way onto the menu, if a hunter is feeling bold (though they can still be a high-risk target; constrictors are no joke when you're like a foot tall). Small rodents like chipmunks and squirrels. Maybe rabbits, if they get lucky? Plenty of birds, especially smaller songbirds.
These days, i think Micaclan's members like to try to have a "specialty" in hunting; one type of prey they're especially good at catching. It's nothing official, just a point of pride to become The Guy Who's Really Good At Catching [Insert Prey Type].
Mudpaw, of course, is well on his way to being the best songbird-catcher in the clan. for no particular reason

I have a quick question about your lovely ocs if you don't mind. After watching your Shut Eye video, I was wondering if the clan feels any particular emotions towards Starclan or do they just take it as an unfortunate side effect of sudden rainfall? If they do, do the current cats in the clan in Mud's generation carry those same emotions?
wait i actually had a thought sort of related to this concept!!
I have a very distinct image in my head of Foxpaw despairing over the thought that he made Starclan angry when he tried drinking before his clanmates, and that his actions caused Starclan to send the flood.
When he brings himself to share these thoughts with an older clanmate, they reassure him that, sometimes, bad things just happen. Starclan isn’t often very heavy-handed, no matter what the elders used to say. They can’t bring floods; if they could bring rain, wouldn’t they have made sure the drought never happened in the first place? Starclan offers guidance, but even they cannot stop the course of nature.
(And even aside from all that, it’s completely normal for a young cat to instinctively drink when they’re thirsty—of course he would forget his mission for a moment when faced with fresh water. And the fact that, when corrected, he did his duty to bring the water back to those who could not fetch it themselves, speaks far more to his strength of character than his initial wavering. Starclan would never be angry with him for that.)
^^ANYWAY that’s how I imagine the clan would deal with thoughts of “why did starclan do this”. Younger cats would wonder why it happened, why Starclan let it happen, and then older cats would use it as a teaching moment to basically say “starclan can guide us, but they can’t protect us from everything. They do their best, but their time in this world has passed. The living must care for the living. We rely on each other, more than anything”
This sentiment is even stronger in current day Micaclan; they’ve grown accustomed to a world where starclan rarely speaks to them, and they must rely on their own judgment and foresight in their day-to-day lives. I’m sure there was/is still bitterness toward Starclan for not protecting the clan from every threat, but it’s the sort of bitterness where you know it’s not rational (emotions rarely are)

ohohoho ideas in brain >:) now this is just a potential idea because I think it could be fun, but I also don’t know how well it would mesh with current mudlore. ANYWAY.
Basically, the idea is that the original clans (pre-micaclan's formation) each had a patron spirit to like. sponsor the first leaders with their nine lives or whatever. And they have to be old spirits, with deep connections to the grounds the clans make their territory. And this is how starclan kinda forms, with the backing of this Extra Strong Ghost that kinda rallies their spirits in the beginning before finally passing on. Maybe the only ghosts that can be this type of patron spirit are the ones who feel as though they can't pass on without leaving a legacy?? idk yet I'm still Thinking.
So a lack of Strong Ghost Friend is stopping Mica from having a legitimate entry into leadership with the nine lives and such, and no starclan for her and her clan(?? still thinking about this). Maybe a healer from one of the other clans defects/gets kicked out, and they explain this all to Mica after joining her little not-yet-an-actual-clan. So mica is like, where do you even find an old ghost. how am i gonna get one of those. And one of her friends is like "well they say everything further upstream of the river is Super Cursed and my friend's mom's cousin told me it's because of an ancient ghost there that hates everyone and everything" and Mica goes "PERFECT I'll go talk to them!!" ignoring how Healer is like "THAT PLACE IS CURSED FOR A REASON DO NOT GO THERE"
So Mica goes upstream with a couple of her buddies, until she finds the river's source. And there she meets Ancient Angry Ghost, who turns out to be the ghost of a smilodon. It pops up out of the water and it's not saying any words but it's basically radiating 'you're gonna die' energy. And Mica just starts talking to them. Like she's definitely freaking out and terrified but she's SO good at playing cool. And maybe she leaves after they get too angry, but she comes back the next day. And then next. And the next. And she eventually manages to wear down this angry prehistoric ghost into being her friend.
Maybe it turns out they stuck around so long because they were the last of their kind, and they never got closure for the loneliness they felt in life. They come to like Mica for her brash spirit, unwavering courage, and surprisingly sharp cunning. When Mica offers them friendship, offers them a group to carry on their way of life in the present day, they agree to be the clan's patron spirit.
This is all because I think it would be cool for Micastar to have this giant ghost warrior of Ye Olden Days following her around like "YOU MUST BE WILLING TO KILL TO PROTECT YOUR OWN. YOU MUST TREAT YOUR ENEMIES AS THE DUST BENEATH YOUR PAWS. DEFEND YOUR FAMILY AGAINST ANY WHO WOULD ENDANGER IT" and Mica being like "it don't bite :)" and the other clans being like "YES IT DO—"

👀 Wrentail was thw clan’s best storyteller?? What kind of stories did he tell? Could you mayhaps give us a little example? I mean I don’t expect you to have thought about the specific stories he told much but you got my curiosity so if possible I will take anything you’re willing to tell about this topic
I don't fully remember where the idea came from, but yeah I wanted Wrentail to actually have some kind of hobby outside of child abuse and rabid xenophobia HAHA, so with his special talent of Lying I figured he would've also been a good storyteller. Good at capturing imaginations, setting the mood through turns of phrase and gestures, and with a good sense for pacing in his story-telling. The stories told would vary, but they would probably range from personal anecdotes, to clan history, to folklore.
I imagine Micaclan as having a pretty rich folklore, with stories that impart lessons to their young members; practical lessons, but also moral lessons at the same time.
As for an example of a story Wrentail might tell, I was inspired to write a little snippet as an example!! I'm not a writer so this might be a lil clunky but I hope you enjoy anyway :P I'm putting it under a cut cause it got long haha
After a long day of training and hunting, Micaclan's apprentices and mentors gather close to discuss what they learned. Whitepaw shuffles nervously; he'd been so caught up in chasing a mouse, earlier, that he'd nearly careened off the edge of a cliff in his mad dash. Robinsong shakes her head at her apprentice, quietly disappointed and concerned.
She says, "You should know better than to chase so intently after prey like that—you weren't even looking at where you were going! Too focused on your prize. Haven't you heard the story of Pecanpaw's Tree?"
Hawkpaw snickers at the reminder of Whitepaw's earlier stunt, only to be quickly silenced as Puddlepaw's shoulder jabs into her side.
Whitepaw avoids looking at his mentor, and keeps his gaze fixed on his paws as he shakes his head, "No, I don't think so."
"Well, it's very applicable here. And that goes for all of you," Robinsong turns to look at the other gathered apprentices, "Hawkpaw, Puddlepaw, Mudpaw—This is an important story, an important lesson. Listen closely." Her eyes turn skyward, in apparent thought.
"Let's see... how does it start?"
Wrentail, beside Robinsong, lifts his head and touches the tip of his tail to her flank. She glances at her brother, before smiling and nodding. He straightens his posture, and begins speaking in a storyteller's lilt:
"It happened one day that a young apprentice, Pecanpaw, was readying for their assessment. The newleaf air was crisp and fresh, morning dew still clinging to the tender shoots of grass reaching up through the earth, and the pine needles under their paws were springy and soft, perfectly suited to cover the sound of their pawsteps as they hunted. All was calm, and the cool breeze carried with it the promise of abundant prey.
"Following the scent, they found their way to the base of a towering hemlock tree, so tall that the branches scraped the undersides of the clouds. And at its base, rummaging amongst the roots, was a squirrel. Not just any squirrel, either; from nose to tail tip, it was large enough to reach from the tip of their paw all the way to their shoulder. If they caught a piece of prey of that size, they would surely pass their assessment with no issue.
"Pecanpaw dropped into a hunter's crouch, and locked their eyes onto their quarry. With soundless pawsteps, they drew closer and closer to the squirrel. The air went still. With only the sound of their own heartbeat roaring in their ears, Pecanpaw readied themselves to leap—and then the wind changed. A gust coming from behind them alerted the squirrel to their scent, and it darted up the tree.
"Frustration tore through Pecanpaw, and they leapt up after their prize. Claws digging into the rough bark of the old hemlock, they kept their eyes locked onto the squirrel ahead of them. Up to the first branch, the second, the third—up and up and up. Always remaining just out of reach, the squirrel practically taunted Pecanpaw and their mission.
"With paws aching from exertion, they clawed their way higher. Before they knew it, the branches beneath them were willowy and thin, bending beneath their weight. Yet the squirrel continued to climb, and thus, so did Pecanpaw. They clung to the trunk of the old hemlock, continuing higher, higher, ever higher. Soon, there would be nowhere left for the squirrel to climb, and then Pecanpaw would have their prize.
"Finally, the end was in sight; only the thinnest of branches were left, and there was no further the squirrel could climb to. Pecanpaw, only a tail length away, could see the bristles of the squirrel's fluffy tail, see the twitch of its nose, its wide, glistening dark eyes. They could see it bunch its muscles, see it tuck into a crouch, and leap with reckless abandon to the waiting branches of the surrounding trees, hundreds of tail lengths below."
Wrentail pauses, taking the time to look at each of the apprentices in turn, before continuing.
"And as soon as their prize left their line of sight, Pecanpaw looked around them, and saw nothing but the tops of trees, felt nothing but the howling wind, smelled nothing but the cold moisture of the clouds. Their prey had been the only thing worth focusing on, they'd thought. Their prey had been the only thing they had focused on. But now, with the squirrel long gone, escaped into the branches below, they saw what they should have seen from the beginning. That the old hemlock tree reached into the sky itself, and that its branches were easy to climb up, but nearly impossible to climb down."
The apprentices wait with bated breath, eager to hear the rest. But Wrentail is already unwinding from the more formal storyteller's pose, lifting a paw to wash his face.
The tip of Hawkpaw's tail flicks from side to side, "So? What happened after that? How did Pecanpaw get down?"
Gullytuft, silent up until now, meows, "How do you think?"
A beat of silence.
"...They fell," Puddlepaw concludes, "They couldn't climb down. They were too focused on their prey and didn't pay attention to their surroundings, didn't stop to think. That's why it's a lesson, right? You're supposed to think about Pecanpaw before you start being reckless and chasing after prey without thinking. Or you might get hurt, like Whitepaw almost did."
"Spot on, Puddlepaw," Sandleap meows.
They preen a little at their mentor's praise, but sober quickly. Pecanpaw's Tree isn't a fun story, not when it feels so real. Any of the apprentices could've been Pecanpaw today. They promise their mentors that they will think before acting rashly.

If Birchspeckle knew about Wrentail's abusive actions towards Mudpaw, why didn't she do anything?
She didn’t know about it while it was happening, she only learned about it afterward when Starclan tried to warn her that Mudpaw was dangerous and that he’d killed Wrentail.
Living away from the rest of the clan, they’re very isolated and don’t see their clanmates very often at all. I’d say, before Wrentail’s death, they might’ve seen Mudpaw once or twice (if at all), and certainly not long enough to notice anything amiss.
She still doesn’t know the extent of the abuse that occurred, but she’s making some educated guesses based on 1) Mudpaw being an outsider, 2) Wrentail’s track record when it comes to outsiders, and 3) Mudpaw’s actions and current emotional state.

I need to know more about Buckfoot!
What was he like, from Shut Eye it seemed like he cared about Owlpaw, and since Birchspeckle was also his apprentice I’m curious on how that relationship was like. Also Was the medicine cats can’t have mates and kits rule enforced? Since he had Possum and Gully I assume the clan allowed it since they needed kits.
Buckfoot my beloved <3
They definitely cared a lot for Owlpaw/pounce. I think they appreciated that she could be what they could not—a bright light in a very dark time. Buckfoot was a realist, almost to a fault. They would tell it like it is, with only the slightest regard for bedside manner. They weren't abrasive per se, but they didn't always understand how to appeal to the emotional states of those they spoke with. They could try to be comforting, but might not always succeed (especially when talking to cats they didn't know quite as well). They had a unique talent for paring a situation down to the most essential facts, and then exploring potential solutions to problems from there. Because of this clear-eyed outlook, they were often sought after for their advice. Their faith in Starclan was iron-clad, and they were still a deeply spiritual cat, even while being firmly rooted in the living world and its realities.
Owlpaw wasn't their first apprentice, but she was perhaps the first one that they truly felt called to teach. Owlpaw was so very different from them, but she was different in a good way. A difference that made them more balanced. After the disaster, she would look to Buckfoot as the one part of her life that was stable. When everything else was thrown into flux, Buckfoot was like a boulder in the middle of a raging river, solid and unmoving. That steadiness carried her through the months and years proceeding the disaster.
Birchspeckle was an unexpected addition to the healers. Owlpaw was still in training when Micaclan found Birchkit. Birch was a prodigy in spiritual matters, dreaming of Starclan and seeing ghosts long before even meeting any of Micaclan's members, but was not old enough to be taught when they found her. Months later, Buckfoot ended up teaching both Owlpaw and Birchpaw simultaneously, which was unprecedented in Micaclan's history. Traditionally, the thought was that if two apprentices had to share a mentor, then one would inevitably end up being favored over the other, even if unintentionally. In this case, Buckfoot turned the training into an opportunity for Owlpaw; she would learn far more effectively by helping to teach Birchpaw right alongside her mentor. When Owlpaw became Owlpounce, she continued to help Buckfoot in teaching Birchpaw. Before they could finish training, though, Buckfoot ended up passing away, and Owlpounce took on the final stretch of Birchpaw's instruction. The three of them were a very close-knit group, and Buckfoot's loss was hard on both Owl and Birch. They consider themselves to be closer to peers than mentor-and-apprentice, even if Owlpounce did end up teaching Birchspeckle's final lessons before becoming a full healer.
The rule about medicine cats and families was never really enforced in Micaclan, doubly so after the disaster when their numbers were so low. Possum and Gully would have known who their other parent was, though I imagine Buckfoot being slightly more hands-off in their parenting style. The type to be like "if they need something, they know they can come to me. otherwise i'll leave them to their exploring".
