best and worst films of 2023?

I didn't watch many new releases this year (I can do a separate ranking of all the best and worst films I saw in general in '23!) unfortunately, but here are the ones I did watch:

worst

Jawan (mass movies are generally the degradation of good quality masala cinema in the service of hero bhakti, regressive or shallow politics and idol worship. I can count on one hand how many mass movies I've actually liked. Read Baradwaj Rangan's interview about the difference between mass and masala cinema to understand my point better. Atlee literally learned from one of the freshest and most unique voices in masala/mass cinema who's still working today (Shankar) and came up with this lmao.)

Saltburn (wasn't as yucky as I was expecting it to be and not as good as films that it took inspiration from (also can be said for Jawan). I liked the cinematography solely because I'm a sucker for saturated, coloured, pretty cinematography and because I like staring at attractive people doing sexual or suggestive things. Falls flat on most aspects.)

Kho Gaye Hum Kaha (planning on posting a longer review of this on letterboxd but basically it doesn't understand Gen Z internet and is an overly judgemental/shallow/moralising view of social media. Also I didn't think the leads had that great chemistry sue me)

The Archies (there were so many ways to make this good. but alas.)

Animal (this is anticipatory. I haven't watched it yet but I know I won't like it except to stare at pretty people and for the transition between Ranvijay and Abrar's intro)

Barbie (like what it did for theatre culture. Disliked the film itself. Watch Broey Deschanel's video for a better understanding of what I'm trying to say)

Bottoms (amazing showstopping incredible so funny and fresh and cult classic)

Polite Society (same as above but pakistani and brit and more tween than sex comedy. i had so much fun watching it and can't wait for the next season of We Are Lady Parts :)

so you think that sam killing emma wasn't morally wrong at ALL?

no i don't. it was as morally reprehensible as all monster kills are and hunters as a group should not be in a position to decide the "humanity" of any person or whether or not they deserve to live. all i think is that the fandom is too stuck on emma and dean as tragic father-daughter figures when there rlly isn't anything in the show itself to amount to that, and that this leads to needless vilification of sam for killing his supposed "niece" when again, all he knew about emma was that she was brought up specifically just so she could kill her bio dad (dean) as a rite of passage and he acted in the interest of saving dean's life.

furthermore, if people want daughter figures for dean i think Krissy and Claire are much better in that role and that dean being a father figure to both of them is much more supported in the text of the show

There are different routes? I‘m a bit confused or do you mean, how far I played the game? Because I only played the a3! eng server/version😭 I can‘t read japanese, so I don‘t play any games if they aren‘t translated! But I‘m trying to be up to date now and read chapter 6 from the main story and then the events! So, everything that wasn‘t in the english game!

And my favorites are:

Spring: Sakuya, Itaru, Tsuzuru, Masumi

Summer: Yuki, Muku, Tenma, Kumon

Autumn: all of them

Winter: Tsumugi, Hisoka, Azuma

But oc I love them all! I have enough love for every character in the game!🥰💕

surprisingly i come to your askbox bearing a3-related thoughts instead of gbf. crazy i know. anyways i finished going thru conquering misoshiosa island!! my thoughts abt it are quite scattershot but i had a lot of fun. as i mentioned previously i almost went thru this event before starting autumn loll. was fun going thru the first bit again with autumn knowledge in my pocket now. the more i hear muku talk the more i want to sit and discuss manga recs with him. like in my heart i just KNOW he read basara. i've read a pretty large amount of shoujo so i think we'd get along.

it was pretty obvious muku and omi were gonna be the pair for this cg and like. i'm pleased about it. they're just such a good pair conceptually when u consider, like, definitions of masculinity and how it might apply to both of them.

azami regarding kazunaris flyers: damn. this is, like, needlessly impressive. what’s that quote about middle schoolers having the most accurate insults. this wasn’t really an insult but it really. Strikes Deep in a way only a middle schooler is capable of.

in any other situation i would gently tell muku that he doesn't need to panic about every eventuality BUT in this case i knew sakyo was planning on leaving them to fend for themselves so i was very glad for muku and omi's preparation. i think its really fun they watched that movie together.

kazu making an itinerary for literally just the trip to the island is sooo funny to me. like he must've known something was a little messed up. do u think sakyo gave him the info and kazunari looked at it, a little miffed that izumi's first instablam post was about spring and winter having a great time without them (and masumi liked the post first) and went. eh. sakyo can have his chaos.

juza bringing chocolate is very juza but him calling the chocolate "rations" is how u know muku and juza are related. love natsugumi teasing tenma abt being sleepless for this trip but like genuinely. its nice that he gets to like. Go On Trips now. like thats a thing he and misumi can do and its not rly something they got to do when they were younger!

i'm going to gloss over the bit with the monkeys where misumi can talk to them bc. i really.... they even acted to the guests in part 11 i do not think this had to happen. normally im all for a3 magic shenanigans so i dont know why this one didnt gel for me lol. anyways PSA wild monkeys can fuck u up so do be careful. don't get aggressive with them. i'm not an expert or anything tho.

the fact that running on the beach is part of their training makes me think sakyo has read knb. doesnt muku give sakyo manga recs? was that not a thing? anyways i think sakyo would read knb. he seems like the type of person to read it and be like. i dont think real high schoolers can go invisible or shoot sparks out of their eyes when they're focused. but i hope he enjoyed it. speaking og knb and a3 a hurrah for team friendship. i saw ur post abt it and like. i want a sticker thats like. I Survived That One Poll Where People Were Really Mean To Muku And Yuki For No Reason. muku and momoi was such a wonderful win to see with the art and propaganda and everything. and i was really rooting for momoi since her name literally comes from momoiro. i didnt actually know there was a knb a3 alliance until this poll but im very glad for its existence bc i love both things very much and theyre both very very dear to me.

was never worried for muku and izumi in the cave bc i Knew muku was doing a hansel & gretel with the way he was acting and i was glad to see it was buttons and not food so omi found them. i think its really cute that not only did omi rush off while people tried to stop him, a bunch of other people were ALSO trying to rush off and were probably stopped. makes sense it was omi who was able to actually do it tho. hes omi after all. look at how he handled banri and juza from day one. him showing muku the flower was so nice and the cg was SO CUTE like. look at those sparkling eyes!!! i also love queen of the night flowers... and im glad they got to go to a resort on the last day.

now some misc notes:

theres this part where taichi lies down in the sand and kumons like oh thats so nice! and lies down with him and i winced so hard like noooo dont u know... sand is just like glitter (Gets Everywhere)

i also just really like that muku is. for all that he berates himself for being weak and he wants to get like more stronger and prince-like and heroic etc. he very much doesn’t seem to correlate that with how he Looks Physically? (see: how he treats yuki) and like. that means so much to me.

finally i saw tenma being annoyed on the ship and island and stuff and. i just Know he complained during the trip and also to everyone when they got back but a year later he'll do an interview for some character that's very woodsy or like he acts as a castaway or something. and i just know he'll talk about how he was able to play the character well due to his own experience of staying on a deserted island… he'll say something abt how it was enriching and taught him a lot about coexisting with nature and some bs like that etc. and after watching that interview everyone in a3 will lovingly make fun of him for it.

True i remember you almost read this one by accident ahah, at least now it's all in order again. You're SO right about Muku, he'd be a delightful conversation partner about manga and especially about shoujo. I'm sure you too would get along.

Also very good point for the CG yeah, they're conceptually a very good duo on that regard, they had such a sweet dynamic this whole time, and it's soft to see them with especially just this soft over a flower.

Ah yeah, Paranoia is Paranoia until the day you're actually right. That's Muku right here. And honestly at this point, is it overthinking or is it a correct assessment of the type of person Sakyo is. Food for thoughts. But yess it's so nice they spent some time together to prepare it all.

FOR KAZU IT'S SO FUNNY. i have to believe that, yes, indeed. Especially also with like, how close Kazunari and Azuma can be as the two travellers type, and he knows perfectly what Azuma pulled last training camp. I trust Kazunari in putting two and two together while preparing his traveler log. Like he must have known. I believe in him.

That's a fair point for the monkeys. It was totally buckwild but yeah this might have been a little too much in term of suspension of disbelief. taking notes for how to behave with monkeys in real life, we never know.

Oh my god a3xknb alliance real and it was thanks to Sakyo all along. And yeah Muku does give Sakyo manga rec. Also Kumon is really big on sports manga and him and Muku talks about this common interest a lot, so if it's not Muku, it's Kumon's fault, but also, i want to say it's Muku because it goes with OUR alliance type. Sakyo would indulge because oh well!

And god right. Team friendship…. and right :sob: remember when people were so mean for no reason. for the sake of cartoon's dogs. :(. but the alliance this competition around was so wholesome. i'm glad you've learnt of the alliance thanks to it now! it's honestly such a sweet phenomena i love it so much. I'm so glad you like those two so much that it makes it more worthwhile <3

Muku is such a clever survivalist on that regard. and Omimi finding them was so nice. the fact so many people wanted to rush to them really is amazing. And agreed, the CG and them being able to rest up really made it worthwhile <3

wow speaking about sand like a true Anakin Skywalker type… gotta give it to him. But yeah Sand does get everywhere. also speaking of sands, remember in the beachside event where Muku and Juza have to talk out a misunderstanding on the beach a way back? Muku then mentions "next time we should bring Kumon on the beach with us". It made me so emotional that the Summer/Autumn training camp was on the beach like that because i was just thinking about how much Muku and Juza wanted to have Kumon with them there….

agreed on Muku. And he's so cool this way :( that's a reason i really love Muku a lot.

and i lOVE what you say about Tenma. He'd complain so much on the spot, but give it a bit and he'll brag about how cool of an experience it was (especially since he was with his buddies) and everyone at Mankai would tease him for it. It fits them so perfectly.

Ayooo finally finding some time to clear out my drafts/askbox after like a year’s time let’s gooooo

Okay, so at first this was supposed to be a full-fledged scenario where each member of the Mankai company would randomly encounter Banri singing in the shower but I eventually lost inspiration and dropped it;;

So take this short WIP plus some bullet points!

One of the aspects of living in the Mankai dorms was, unfortunately, having to use a communal bathroom. For better or for worse, that led to Banri sharing the bathroom with other members at times that were once his private bathing time.

That isn’t to say that Banri was embarrassed about it – hell, he has an amazing body and he freaking knows it!

“B-Banri!” Sakuya squeaks out as he averts his eyes, Tsuzuru doing the same. “Sorry for disturbing you. Spring Troupe’s night practice just finished and we thought that no one else was in here.”

Moments like these, however, make him wish he had a bathroom he could use by himself.

Awkward seconds pass painfully slow until Sakuya and Tsuzuru decide to just show themselves out, electing to wait for Banri to finish his bath.

“For what it’s worth, you have a lovely singing voice, Banri.” Tsuzuru offers before hurrying over to the door.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Banri grouches, his face reddening at being caught. “I’ll hurry up so your troupe can get in already.”

Later, Masumi who heard the details from a sleep-talking Tsuzuru sneers at Banri for his poor taste in music. Eventually, Citron catches wind of the fact and makes a big deal at the dinner table about how he laments not being able to witness Banri’s “concert”, nor being able to sing along with him. Itaru and Chikage continuously tease him about it until the news loses its novelty.

- Tenma being Tenma gives him shit about it like “Your technique could use some work.” But also uses it as an excuse to hang out and goes “Improve and bring your A game to our next karaoke sesh.”

- Yuki just isn’t having it like, “shut up some ppl need to bathe properly”

- Kazunari is totally on board, joins in like, “oh yeah pump it up let’s partyyyyy ”

- Muku is totally accepting of it and this further solidifies his princely image he has of Banri bc he sings when doing daily stuff

- Misumi occasionally joins in on Banri’s bath time and sings triangle songs and Banri was super exasperated about it at first and actively tried to avoid taking baths with Misumi around but eventually grew to accept it and just lets it happen.

- Kumon heckles him about him like “my nii-chan sings way better than you smh.”

- Autumn troupe bath time: Banri just unconsciously starts singing under his breath. Juza is like stfu. Sakyo tells him to get the bath over with quickly and stop wasting water. Omi compliments his singing voice, saying it’s much better than his own. Taichi joins in as hypeman and starts belting along with Banri. Azami shades him like “If you have time to sing in the bath you have time to do proper skin care my god.”

- Tsumugi and Tasuku would be chill with it, not too overly excessive in their reaction and just apologize for intruding.

- Azuma would definitely tease Banri about it, saying things like, “My, how unexpectedly cute of you.”

- Homare definitely would join in, spouting out lyrics and rapping along.

- Hisoka is a rock. He sleeps through it all.

- Guy is intrigued and considers it as good vocal exercise and adds it to his bath routine as well

Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing well in whatever corner of the world you're at! 💖

This morning, I woke up to an ask in my main blog askbox that was left by an anon; an anon that was extremely concerned about the archive and our plans for it. And while it admittedly made me panic like Muku at first...It was good we got it! So, first off, to state straight away:

This archive is a PRIVATE archive that has a very limited amount of people able to access it.

We are not looking to preserve any other A3! content, especially the paid content.

This project has now moved to focus SOLELY on the preservation of the English version of A3!

So, anon: Thank you so much for reaching out with your concerns! It is so appreciated, because it opened up my eyes. See, to explain myself, when I first made plans for the archive, I was in adrenaline mode; I was excited to put together this project and I had huge plans. But despite those huge plans it NEVER involved us freebooting/illegally sharing resources around; NEVER. But I didn't make that clear enough in my initial posts on here about it, and I apologize for that-while working within the archive and organizing the discord, I poorly maintained this page and left wrong impressions on this project and our team. I am deeply sorry for this, and I want everyone to know that the intention of the archive project is NOT to share resources illegally; that is a HUGE no no and while I didn't clarify it enough here, I made sure to clarify it on the discord, so none of our members have been doing that.

I know in the original talks about this project we discussed a private/public archive; my idea for the public archive was that we would "cherrypick", so to say, what we legally could from the private archive and put it out on the public. But as we've advanced as a project and have been in discussions and realized things, we have been planning and doing:

1. The private archive, shared with very few people and heavily protected so the chances of someone abusing the archive for piracy are low.

2. A public resource page/archive, where we share resources to buy/stream/play/listen/etc everything A3 legally or from official sources.

Because as long as A3! is still around and alive, we want to ensure we can directly show support for it as possible. Again, that was always a part of this archive's mission, even if it wasn't clearly stated here. Again, I heavily apologize for that. I will work harder to be more clear and specific about the archive for future updates going forward.

Which brings me to this:

The only reason we're looking to preserve the A3! English version, privately, is because while Cybrid HAS mentioned they're going to keep A3! English open for some time, the fact is we don't know how long that will be. It could be for five years, it could be for five weeks; we don't know for sure. And with how huge the game is, there's a lot we still have to gather and archive, so the sooner we start now the better.

But I still wish to assure everyone that, no matter the focus on this project, it will ALWAYS be on preservation and documentation, NOT as a hive of pirates distributing stuff illegally to people. We're a private archive looking to preserve pieces of a series that means so much to us, and to ensure the work of the translators and all the other amazing people on the localization team are not forgotten and lost to time.

With all this said, the project is going to undergo rebranding and the tumblr is going to get cleaned up so we can avoid anymore of these worries. 💕

I would like to extend another thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding as we here at the project work continuously on improving the project; we are still very much in our infancy and have been learning a lot as we go (as we're all new to this basically!) So we appreciate all the support and patience! Thank you all again, and I hope this clears up all concerns! 💖

Happy Birthday, Yuki!

My first proper(-ish?) A3! piece, featuring Yuki’s birthday! Fem!Reader, suggested to be around the middle/high-schooler age. Kind of tomboyish (running around with Juza and Taichi, gaming with Itaru and Banri, etc.) This is a casual type of reader insert, since I’m just starting to write for these guys. Do drop by my askbox if you’d like to see more of this fandom!

“How much time have we got?” Banri asks you, surveying the pile of decorations.

School’s just ended, and the plan was to occupy Yuki on his way back in order to set up for his birthday. Normally you'd distract him yourself, but in light of a small time-frame you’ve decided that all hands on deck were needed.

“One hour by Muku, then we’ll send Taichi over for another hour.” You turn to Banri with a grin. “Just like a game, right? We’ve got all our pieces set up.”

Truly, spending time with him and Itaru was rubbing off on you.

“A game, huh?” A competitive gleam enters his eyes. “Then we’ll clear it, easy.”

“Stop standing around and yapping,” Sakyo enters the room. “If you want to surprise Rurikawa like you planned you better hurry up.”

With that as a reminder you begin to assign items to everyone, double-checking as you go to make sure nothing was overlooked. You’ve decided that since Yuki always looked out for you despite your quirks and troubles, you’ll do your best for him today.

Strengthening your resolve, you turn to the boys that’ve gathered. “Right, let’s get to work!”

"This was nice and all," Yuki says to Muku, picking up the takeout bag. "But it isn't like you to be so spontaneous and try out a new cafe."

Reading his suspicion, Muku quickly covers it up with a short laugh, waving his hands as if to clear the air. "I just wanted to do something with you for your birthday, is all~ The guys on the track team mentioned that the desserts here were stylish, so it made me think of you!"

Fortunately, nervousness isn't an oddity from Muku, so Yuki relaxes his guard a bit. "I guess that makes sense… Though I don't get why people make such a big deal of birthdays, sometimes."

"It's an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for you." Muku opens the door for them as they leave. He's bought the others an hour, but isn't sure if that was enough. "Speaking of, why don't-"

"Yuki!!"

The pair jumps at the sudden sound, turning to see Taichi running towards them at an alarming speed. He doesn't seem like he intends to slow down, which makes Yuki step back and raise his hands in an attempt to stop him.

"Slow down, you dumb-"

"Happy Birthday!"

Taichi attacks Yuki with a side hug, hanging by his arm like a child. This earns him an unimpressed stare from the green-head, while Muku manages a little chuckle at the sight.

"What are you even doing here?" An exasperated Yuki sighs, pushing the other boy off. "Shouldn't you be back at the dorms by now?"

"Actually!" Taichi reveals a shopping list, "I came to help with buying groceries, but there's a lot to carry so it’ll be easier if we all go."

"How did you know we were nearby?" He rests a hand at his hip, wearing a doubtful look. "Creep."

"It's not like that! Y/n gave me a heads up in case I needed the help."

"Ah, right! We sent her a picture of the desserts that looked cute." Muku joins in, asserting Taichi's excuse. 

In reality, you had planned out this entire scene by asking Muku to send updates from the cafe. Since you’re normally messing around rather than planning things like these, your strategic ability came as a surprise to most. Both he and Taichi make a mental note to never cross you, lest you use your powers for evil.

"...and Y/n is probably busy climbing the roof with Trianglian or something." Yuki shakes his head, seeming to have bought into the story. "Fine, we'll help you out. No one needs the groceries to be damaged from mishandling."

"I'm fine with that." Muku agrees, turning in the direction of the supermarket. "Shall we get going?"

- During the party -

“Why’d you go so far to buy two hours, though?” Yuki gestures to Taichi, who had intercepted him and Muku to further stall. “Did it really take that long to set up?”

“Well, Y/n was pretty adamant about having things up to standard.” Azuma smiles. “If anything was shoddily put up she’d go after whoever was in charge; no one would’ve dared to slack off.”

“It didn’t help that Banri and Sakyo were backing her up, too.” Tsuzuru recalls, grabbing another snack. “I thought I’d hung the decorations upside-down at one point - my heart almost stopped.”

You feel your face burn from their words. “It wasn’t that bad!”

The party goes on for a while. You and Yuki chat over at the side while the guys take to start a new video game (Itaru apparently bought it in honour of his birthday, so they were determined to clear it perfectly on the first try in his name).

Sounds of battle and intense playing sound over Kazunari’s narrations, which cause Yuki to roll his eyes. “Those idiots… It’s a good thing the place is large enough that we won't disturb any neighbours.”

“Not like anyone would dare come over, though.” You laugh. “The last time the mailman arrived Juza answered the door, remember?”

He shakes his head exasperatedly. “Those Autumn gangsters… They’re hopeless.”

As if summoned by the mention of them, Omi passes by. He joins in the conversation for a bit. “Hopefully the cake’s to your taste?” He asks playfully. “Kazunari helped draw on the cats on top as a memento to your second play.”

“I knew it… Those designs looked too familiar.” Yuki brings a hand to his head. “I guess I should be grateful he didn’t just paint a portrait on.”

Omi chuckles. “It would be quite a sight if he did.” As if a thought just occurred to him, he turns to you, voice melting into concern. “Y/n, did you ever treat your knee?”

You suddenly remember what happened - the injury had dulled away so it never crossed your mind. “Ah, I completely forgot… I’ll just wrap it up later at night. It doesn’t even hurt.” You try to assure them.

Yuki gives you a strict look. “No, you’re getting it treated now.”

When he starts off in the direction of the rooms, Omi bids you good luck. “It’s nice to know that he’s looking after you.”

Your shoulders slump as you make to follow him, guilt wrapping around your reply. “He shouldn’t have to… It’s his birthday.”

“I don’t think he minds, actually.” Omi lends you a knowing smile. “You should hurry so that you can return soon.”

“Seriously… How‘d this even happen?” Yuki applies the sanitizer to your knee, making you wince from the sting.

“We were hanging up the banners,” you sheepishly smile over the pain. “I tripped from the ladder and caught myself, but…” You gesture to the injury. “I scratched it on the roof.”

“You should’ve let the others do it.” He’s wrapping it up now. “Pretty sure Misumi or Banri could’ve done it quicker.”

You pout at that, crossing your arms defiantly. “I wanted to work hard for you! And I shouldn’t be let off from the work just because I’m a girl!”

Yuki sighs, clipping the first aid kit shut. “This isn’t about you being a girl.” He then meets your eyes seriously. “It’s about you being clumsy when you get too excited over something. You’re always running around with the others and come back fine, but once you’re distracted you’ll be open to injury.”

You open your mouth to rebut, but come up short. “Betrayal.” You say semi-dramatically. “I can’t believe you’re calling me out like this.”

He snorts, “I just don’t want someone important to me getting hurt.”

As if he didn’t just say something touching, Yuki gets up from the bed to store the things away. When he looks at you again, he pauses and raises a brow at how you’re staring. “What?” He asks, suddenly conscious of his surroundings.

any recs for bollywood movies similar to fire walk with me?

hmmm. I haven't seen fire walk with me but im almost done with the first season of twin peaks + i think i understand the basic tone of that film. Based on that, I'd rec:

Qala by Anvitaa Dutt; has some problems with caste-blindness (like her other movie Bulbbul) but it came out the same year as Blonde (which many described as a failed FWWM wannabe) and was a better movie based on similar text.

Maya Memsaab by Ketan Mehta; i have NOT seen this one but I've seen clips + music videos from the movie + read reviews online and it seems very similar to FWWM. also this review lives in my mind rent-free

Edit: forgot to mention, in Maya Memsaab srk plays this young twink obsessed with the protag and from what I've heard he's very great <3

so um. this must feel very weird because it was just announced that the prequel was cancelled by the CW so i rlly don't think me airing my problems with it remains fruitful but STILL. as a marygirl and johncrit/john-understander AND frequent participant of toxic tragic maryjohn """"shipping"""" i have to say (as someone who has not watched this show keep that in mind pls this is just from what i have seen on the dash). it's very weird that the writers and producers decided to focus on how dean's feelings must be hurt and on dean's need for a hashtag apple pie normal happy domestic home life and dean's closure and ignored basically everything about the actual mary and john.

i thought it was very disrespectful to mary in particular, who had to marry a man she despised (and vice-versa on his part) because of divine manipulation from heaven. one thing about mary's story was that she did not want to be a hunter in the end and that she craved safety for her and her loved ones instead of the dangers for hunting. despite this she could never get out of the hunting life because her destiny was to be used as a pawn in the celestial game leading upto the apocalypse and the end of the world which like! fucking sucks! and she loved her children and probably also her husband (how much of the latter was genuine and not the aforementioned celestial fuckery we'll never know) but that doesn't mean her life and marriage were happy or normal.

john as well. he was forced to fall in love with a person he "couldn't stand" due to higher forces orchestrating it since the beginning of humankind apparently. but unlike mary he didn't stop believing in his destiny. before her death we know that mary was considering divorce but we don't know if john felt the same. what we do know is that immediately after her death he spiralled so hard that he decided to risk him and his children's lives to seek revenge against her murderers, which unfortunately led to him discovering hunting and raising his kids up to be hunters, which is the only thing mary didn't want. infact, ending this cycle of hunting was the main reason she made sure he remained ignorant of hunting and her past life as a hunter. and we know that instead of doing any of this, john could've easily talked with mary's ghost (see 1x09) and consulted with her on how to parent their kids, or heck, even just straight up ASKED her who her killer was, but he didn't. because talking with mary would mean having to talk about their cringefail marriage and life together. he held up an ideal of her as the perfect wife and their relationship as the perfect marriage, and he sacrificed his life and his sons' lives at this fake altar. (keep in mind, it is very IMPORTANT to his character that he does not know shit about hunting before mary's death)

mary also does this, in a way, when after being brainwashed by the bmol (boooo!) she retreats into a mental fantasy where she's younger, dean is a toddler and sammy's an infant and refuses to "look at" the older dean who repeatedly asks her to see him and hear him. tellingly, john isn't a part of this fantasy.

so obviously all of this affected dean. knowing that your father would rather choose a life of danger and uncertainty over a healthy and safe childhood for you and your brother, knowing that him and your mother never "truly" loved each other, knowing that their marriage was on the verge of ending before your mother's death all fucking sucks. knowing that because you turned out leading the life you mother did not want for you to have, having your mother come back after so many years but she's about a decade younger than you and would rather go back to what's known and comforting to her (i.e. hunting) over parenting your adult ass and confronting her new reality has also got to suck. after being traumatised and put in harm's way his entire childhood and early adulthood by his father, who was acting in the interest of protecting the perfect made-up ideal of his angelic mother and their perfect life before her death, he was even denied the closure of having a mother and regaining that type of life when she was actually present for it.

this absolutely does not mean we should write and produce shows where dean's form of "closure" is travelling the multiverse (you will NEVER be spiderverse etc etc), finding a perfect reality that exists where we retcon his parents as better people who DID love each other, actually, and they ALSO had brown and queer friends and they were like, totally cool with that, and the impala is a time travelling car now. maryjohn is not a love story. it is a tragedy. it is a horror story. it can even be a fucking comedy if you think about how absurd it all is, but it is NEVER a normal happy romance.

they fundamentally cannot end up together and be happy about it. and you cannot ask me to be happy about such a story! i would've even been ok with the show if they presented us with dean who is dead in heaven, refusing to meet his similarly dead-and-in-heaven parents, completely dissatisfied with how his life was and instead of finally resting, choosing to time travel across multiverses to find a reality where his life had the potential to be happier, where his parents stayed together willingly and resolved all their conflicts, where he had a better childhood. and presented us with all of this as the insanely tragic, terrifying thing that it is instead of some nostalgic, forever 21 wardrobed, 70s scooby-doo-esque, retro funfest.

i don't fault people (especially dean fans) for liking this show. i understand how seeing dean again, and seeing him happy, seeing him finally "save" his mother, could be cathartic or even just plain enjoyable for a lot of people. but im unhealthily obsessed with a lot of the source material this show plays so fast and loose with and it's so unacceptable to me lol.
