Sophia Bergqvist's Quinta de la Rosa Ports Find Their Path (Wine Spectator)

Likely the only British womanrunning a Port house today, Sophia Bergqvist, 58, owns Quinta de laRosa. Her family took over the estate when her great-grandfather acquired it aspart of a wedding dowry in 1906; prior to that it had been part ofFeuerheerd.

"He realized it was better to own thevineyard and make the Port on site, rather than go around and buy up Port winesthat others had vinified and then blend them, which was the common approach atthe time," says Bergqvist. He also had the foresight to build a winery inthe town of Pinhão with eight lagares (stonefermenting vats) and a rather sizeable 800-pipe cellar, both also uncommon atthe time.

Business was tough, though, and by the 1930s thecompany had gone bankrupt; the family was able to keep the vineyard, however. They sold their grapes off to Croft and Sandeman until 1988, when Sophia's father hadgrown unhappy with how his grapes were being used. Sophia jumped in tohelp, and they started bottling the estate's production, starting with a 1988 Vintage Port.

"It's very tough starting out as a Portproducer, and you need to have something to sell, so we made an '88," shesays. "It actually got approved even though it wasn't a declared vintage.I was very naive back then. I figured if it was approved [by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto] then itmust have been good. It's still holdingup today … but it is very, very light," she adds with a laugh.

With the recent addition of 25 acres ofvines, Quinta de la Rosa now totals 136 acres, making approximately 1,000 casesin declared vintages, along with some tawny Port. The vineyard isplanted to about 20 percent of an old-vine field blend, along with 35 percent Touriga Nacional, 30 percent Touriga Franca, 10 percentSouzão and Tinta Cão combined, and a last bit of Tinta Barroca that is slowly being taken out. Winemaker Jorge Moreira has been at the estate since 2002.

"We love Touriga Franca here for its floralnote," says Sophia. "The Sousa is important for color and tannin. And then both work well withTouriga Nacional, which is all dense fruit."

It took time to learn her vineyard, she says, admitting she initially went for a full, extracted style in order to mirrorwhat other producers were doing.

"But I realized if I picked very late, thewine was too jammy. So I tried picking early, and it was green," she says. "It took sometime to understand what the best time was [to pick]. But this vineyard givesfreshness. It has morning sun and minerality and I realized eventually that wedid best with a fresh, slightly drier style."

That style was on full display in a nine-vintagevertical, tasted non-blind in Wine Spectator's New York office, covering all the vintage releases between 2004 and 2016. The run alsocoincides with the installing of Moreira as winemaker, on the advice of DirkNiepoort.

The 2004 Quinta de la Rosa Vintage Port showsgently steeped mulberry and raspberry notes, with a juicy, solid fruitcakefinish. The 2005 is a beauty, all grace and elegance, with mulled raspberry andplum notes gilding with incense and dried anise on a silky, lengthy finish.The 2007 is a big, juicy, slightly more powerful style, with youthfully vibrantblackberry and plum compote notes laced with bramble and anise. There's a lightfloral echo at the end adding grace, but this is a big wine.

"And then there are vintages where you justtake what the vineyard gives you," says Sophia. "The perfectvintage is a wet spring, dry, hot summer, rain at the end of August and thenpicking two weeks after the rain. 2007 had all that except the late rain. And'11 had it all."

The 2009 is very sleek and fresh in feel, with aracy beam of raspberry and plum purée, a long, graphite edge and a refined feelthrough the finish. The 2011 stands out, as does the 2007, but is even "more," with a huge reserve of dark currant, fig and plum reduction notes and a wall ofgrip around it all. It seems to be resigned to a long run in the cellar beforeit unfurls, whereas most of the other vintages in the tasting are accessibleeven when young.

"And that's a result of a more elegant style," she says. "They are approachable sooner, with the exception of something like2011."

The 2012 returns to thefresh and floral style with a strong violet note out front and supple blueberryand açaí berry flavors that are pure and fresh. The 2014 shows sage and minthints typical of this cool and wet year, with a juicy core of plum and mulberryfruit—it's accessible now even. The 2015 is tightly focused, with a polishedbeam of blackberry and raspberry and anise and apple wood notes through thefinish. The 2016 is very bright and expressive, with the floral componentleading the way in grand style while primal plum and black cherry compote notesform the core (the latter two vintages are too young for ideal drinking now,unlike most others in the flight).

The current release 2016retails for about $90 per bottle, a fair price for high-quality Vintage Port.Quinta de la Rosa also releases older vintages to the marketplaceat times, so hunt for those. The 2005 was showing particularly well andwould be an ideal way to get a feel for aged Vintage Port.
