I miss those days when family and friends would give my kids the loudest toys. Hey. Why don’t we get Richie’s son a drum set. Thank you...I gave their kid a dog. Payback is a bitch. What is the worst toy someone gave your kid that drove you out of your mind? Someone got my son a fire engine and the siren was so annoying. What did I do? I took the batteries out and used it as an opportunity to teach him the word broken.😂 you can can love them or control them but you can’t do both. We do it not even knowing we are. We learned it from our parents who learned it from theirs. Our children have their own plan for this world. Their own identity and are on their own journey. Just because we created them doesn’t mean we own them and need to control them. They came into this world knowing what they are here to do and it is our job as parent to support them on their journey. Not to create Mini versions of ourselves. Not to fulfill our own unmet needs. Not achieve the things we failed to do. Not to build up our egos. So next time we think about projecting onto our children our own fears, expectations and view of the world we need to stop and think about how the impact of the words that are going to come out of our mouths are going to fall upon our children. Is there any agenda that we are trying to satisfy of own egos? We need to think before we speak and let our children experience their own journey in life, allow them to form their own beliefs, make their own mistakes and chase their own dreams. We already had our shot so let’s give them a chance to have theirs. Then watch the magic that can happen when they are not trapped in a world that we created for them in our own image. When we don’t ask our children empowering questions we lose that opportunity to teach them. Each lane question is an opportunity lost forever. “How was school” lame question. “How do you feel”. Lazy question. Ripe for the I dunno know standard reply. If you want to reach them and connect with them make each question so powerful that they need to stop think and if they look up at the ceiling you nailed it. They will thank you for it someday. When our children are young they are exploring their world and their wardrobes. So as parents it is our job to help them find their own identity and place in the world. Not to judge them and tell them those shoes don’t go with that shirt. Or you can’t wear purple pants with orange shirt. They have no concept of the filters we see the world through. They don’t understand and really don’t care about what they are wearing. They picked it. Looked good to them and they are going with it. As parents what are we really afraid of? Being judged by others? “I can’t believe Nancy let her daughter wear those purple pants to school”. Or maybe they don’t live up to our expectations of fashion? What happens when we think they dress to distress? We tell tell them they don’t look good, that outfit doesn’t match or something else. Which leaves them feeling ________? How would you feel if someone told you you didn’t look good? Exactly that is what our children feel like. We want to build up their self esteem and let them find themselves.If that means 2 different shoes then so be it. Maybe they are going to create a fashion trend or be the next Gucci or Louis Vuitton. You never know. So next time they get dressed and they ask how they look. Put on a big smile and give them praise, Give them some specific compliments about their outfit and make them feel important. That is how to Parent. When we brake promises to our children how do you think that makes them feel? Unloved, unworthy, sad, frustrated? As parents we think we have the best excuses. Work, commitments, busy schedules...doing it for the family. But what we fail to realize as parents that they don’t understand any of that. They just see that we made a promise to them and we broke it. We broke their trust and made them feel like whatever we had going on was more important than them. How do you feel when someone brakes a promise to you? Your partners, your boss, your financial advisor? Feels crappy right? So our children feels as though their entire world is collapsing around them when we commit and don’t follow through. So when we do mess up we need a magical apology to rebuild that bridge of a broken promise. So show remorse, provide restitution and assure rehabilitation and know that it will take time to repair that bridge and when you do you better make sure you never betray that trust again or you will certainly be banished to the world of the untrusted. So maybe don’t make as many promises and be honest with yourself and your child. In the end we need to ask ourselves what is really important in life? I will leave you with that. Need some support. Parenting is challenging enough and then a doctor diagnosis our child with a label such as ADHD. Their world just got a lot more difficult which can further traumatize a fragile teenage mind. So as parents what we shouldn’t be doing is hurting them even more by using the labels against them and@being impatient when we are getting frustrated. We need to place ourselves in their shoes and not only understand their world but how challenging it is now not only because they are a hound adult but now that they have been labeled by the medical professions. They are still our children and they need to be loved even more. So give them the benefit of the doubt and try try to understand that they are doing the best they can with the resources that they have. So as parent we should take a page from that book and give it our best. You can love them or control them and when you parent.
