Play words and phrases, not bowings! When playing songs with words, I practice saying the words noticing the natural rhythm of each word as well as the natural rise and fall and lengths of phrases. Here’s an example of the process in the #beautifulsong #rememberme from #coco by by #robertlopez and #kristenandersonlopez 3 Videos: 1) Say the words as a poem. Speak naturally without getting too involved with the meter. Speak in sentences as marked by the punctuation. ~swipe left~ 2) Practice phrase by phrase, imitating the words and phrases with the instrument. ~swipe left~ 3) Play the entire section/stanza hearing the words and phrases as you play. During this process, I noticed a few things. Here are some: I play the word “remember” with a slight emphasis on the second syllable “re-MEM-ber”. I also hold the word “hold” slightly longer. These, among other details are things I began to do naturally and intuitively during this process. When my phrasing sounds “Beaty” or lumpy, I practice this #musicalphrasing drill and systematically reduce the number of strong impulses in each measure. #practiceviolin #musicalphrasing and bow speed management using a #twinklebow In this passage from #concertoinaminor by J.B. Accolay (mm. 32-40), it’s important to control the speed of the #downbow phrase endings which occur in mm. 34, 36, 38, & 40) Each of these endings is preceded by a rather fast #upbow and therefore can receive too much bow if the player is not careful. Here’s how I practice (two videos and one picture): 1) Twinkle bow limits the length of bow available. I practice with as pure a tone as I can with the small amount of bow available. ~swipe left~ 2) Performance version. After practicing with the twinkle bow it is easier to manage the bow speed changes. Tone is pure and powerful, phrasing is easy and follows the “hairpins” in the part. Rhythm is steady and accurate.
