Tumblr keeps recommending me posts with some of the worst takes on Catra’s character. Always an//ti//Catradora posts. (Like, did we watch the same show? We couldn’t have possibly watched the same show. Why the fuck would anyone compare her trauma to Hordak? Because they are on two entirely different character journeys, at wildly different age ranges and maturity, and with wildly different amounts of time to grow and change. Never mind the constant outside negative authority influences on Catra all the fucking damn time, that Hordak never has to deal with until season 5. And fortunate for Hordak, Prime doesn’t allow him the free will to choose a path, so Hordak gets a free pass, his character growth and budding humanity remain intact.) Don’t get me started on this, I could write a whole critical analysis on why Catra is a wonderfully written complex character, and why comparing her to Hordak is fucking ludicrous. Honestly the lack of comprehension about writing, character, fantasy, narrative and trauma astounds me when I see some of these Catra hate posts pop up in my recommended feed.

Tumblr, hopefully your algorithm gets this, but I LOVE Catra. I love her. I love this tortured mess, I love the writing that went into her character, I love her waffling precarious hold on sanity and reason. I love how she struggles to cope with her trauma. I love the realism put into her character despite the fantasy setting. But I also love that they didn’t push the realism too far, because it is at the end of the day a fantasy story. I love the delicate balance they wove into her character. I love the complexity and thought put into her entire character arc through the whole series. (And before anyone comes to crucify me, I say I love Catra, as a person who suffered immense parental trauma and manipulation. As a victim of some of the worst of it. I shouldn’t even have to mention my own trauma to justify appreciating a FICTIONAL character. But here we are.)

Would I have loved one extra season to really explore her redemption more thoroughly? Yes of course. An extra season would have been delightful to explore a lot of the character relationships more thoroughly. But we didn’t get that, and what the show creators did give us was still wonderful and satisfying. (Even if I have some critiques on some things.) the writing of the show at the end of the day is still smart, and tight, and so so competent. (Looking at the myriad of other story driven cartoons and shows that fall apart in the later seasons or just have an overwhelming amount of inconsistencies and botched writing. **coughs** Voltron, Miraculous, YGO, Netflix Carmen Sandiego, Bleach, many animes in general, just to name a few. Not that I didn’t love and adore most of these shows too.) the fact that She-ra (2018) stayed consistently tight and snappy and smart with their writing, narrative, and characters from beginning to end is a treasure.

Anyway. Catra is great. I could write a character analysis going into why from a writing and storytelling standpoint. But honestly I don’t think anyone cares that deeply, and I don’t exactly have followers who are particularly interested in She-ra. Tumblr, you god forsaken windfall apple, please stop suggesting an//ti//Catra and an//ti//Catradora posts. I don’t want to see them. I support the canon relationships. And I support the non canon ships too. What I do not support is hating on shippers who like other ships. It breeds contempt in a fandom, and leads to a fandom canabalizing itself until there are no fans left. Also letting hate and disdain take up such a large amount of time and space in your brain, leads you down some dark paths mentally.

The Vex, the Black Garden, and Mercury's Conversion. (Alt Title: I am going insane)

There's always something going on with the Vex in the background and I can't believe I didn't pay closer attention to it when these weird single-celled organisms have always been right up my alley right there beside Osiris.

Anyways. What's been on my mind lately is Brass Gardeners from the Inspiral lorebook (dropped from Root of Nightmares.) I was so caught up in the interesting implications and continuation of Unveiling that it completely flew under the radar for me.

Now what I want to focus on is these key aspects from this lore entry:

Garden state: neutral garden&&gardeners==root&&branch==leaf&&flower //intrinsic, inextricable, inescapable

And

anomaly One = leaf|invasive; Garden state: active (gardeners attend)

And

anomaly Zero = infinite|witness; archive data retrieved. Zero = infinite|witness == (a seed was planted here.) Recorded referent: "Black|Heart" Zero : seed :: One : DANGER [SIMULATION BREAKING. VISIBILITY NARROW. FRACTALS DISINTEGRATING.] anomaly Zero, absent. anomaly One, DANGER remaining. Garden state: acting (gardeners in unison)

And

Now I'm no expert at coding. But I know a little bit about logic algorithms, especially ones that are presented here. (This is an if-then type of algorithm. These kinds of logic equations are also used in Philosophy which I know much more about.)

The gist of this entry is that, from what I can glean, the Traveler visited the Vex once, and while the Vex considered it invasive they were not actively hostile. An indeterminate amount of time passed, presumably up until the Collapse (our time), and the Witness visited the Garden these Vex have created. (It very well could be that the Black Garden was not the Black Garden until the introduction of the Witness.) It left them a "seed" (or... a code...) that would become the Black Heart.

Or, as we now know, a failed attempt at recreating the Veil.

After this introduction is when the Vex became actively hostile. They did not stay gardeners, the Sol Divisive became winnowers only when the Witness introduced the concept. Which is an incredibly fascinating implication.

So what does this mean?

Well I have a couple theories. Remember this is just speculation, it's not canon.

So we know the Vex have been in our system for... a while. Ever since the Ishtar Collective and Clovis Bray decided to be stupid about them. But this idea of total conversion didn't seem to be the end-all state. I mean the Ishtar Academy was still intact despite some Vex conversion. It doesn't seem like Europa's conversion went very far either.

So why did they go into a frenzy with Mercury during the Collapse? Why did the Vex make Mercury their simulation engine for a Vex end-state? If they wanted to they could've made any of the thousands of planets they inhabit into a simulation engine to the degree of Mercury's but there's no evidence they did. Why target Io? Or Nessus? Why only planets the Light has touched?

Well... The answer is a little complicated. We don't know, really, how the Vex began to terraform Nessus and Io, but we do know how they got to Mercury.

So, let's remember this line:

Now, let's look at how the Vex were introduced to Mercury in Trials and Tribulations (for the sake of clarity I will be cutting out the Witness lines save for one vital line):

It was a garden world. The phrase, uttered in confidence. The expanse above, a cup—rimmed in gamma-ink radiance—dammed against the Mercurian sky at the Kármán line. Against the howl of star-wind, the black fell open. Within the rip convulsed and excreted coils of shimmering life. Probing, clattering tendrils slithered down to make landfall. Chrome-hooked appendages stretched for miles through sun-soaked atmosphere. They bored into the marigold sands. From the great temporal chasms flowed an ocean of radiolarian fluid. Across the horizon the scene was resonant and multiplicative. Each injection site fostered a new lineage in stone and steel and fluid. The new age in sub-routine and observation. They would foster the seeds of a generation in time. From the sites bubbled pools that murmured chaotic, and wrung the Traveler's Light from Mercury. The Light coalesced within the pools. The planet transformed into a machine of prediction. The arms retracted, and returned to temporal hovels, suspended just above Mercury's influence. With them rose the spires. From the core, threads of iron fused reinforcement into the spires and brought them high. A surface driven flat by eons of solar erosion had risen. A million open mouths curled plated tongues in completion. Across the world grew a terrible consciousness that yearned to find its progenitor. The hulking vessels pulsed with light. The pools and spires pulsed dull tones in recognition, and the black sealed once more, restoring the sol-dominated sky |awaiting an angular shadow|. Illumination left the spires, and the Light was erased.

Okay, this one is a big one and might be a little difficult to grasp, but the gist of it is that a portal ("the black") opened and implanted the first Vex seeds into Mercury all while draining the Light. This portal was created by a Pyramid. This happened during the collapse.

The Vex were artificially implanted onto Mercury by the Witness for the purpose of creating a prediction engine. And not only that but they were meant to wait for the Witness's return.

Which they responded to in the last chapter of Trials and Tribulations:

Vance stood in the old Lighthouse, frantically assembling the Infinite Simulacrum: a machine formed from bits of simulation seeds and connective Vex architecture to mimic a pocket forest. Textured notes and schematics derived from Osirian lore guided his hand. He heard stories from passing Guardians of increasingly frequent coronal mass ejections. Vast bursts of charged particles whipped into space and furled around a gravitational monster buried from sight and sense in the roar of the star-wind. Passage to Mercury had become more dangerous for the uninitiated. These unnatural motions were heralds of speculation, and he had read the signs. He knew the prophecies by heart and mind and intention. Ruin. Something new |and so very old| emerged, brother to a shriveling star: An angular |hungering patient yawning deep| shadow reached across Mercury. He closed his eyes |and saw what was to come|. This day had many names. None would suffice.

We know now that memory and consciousness is linked to the darkness, and in turn links to simulations. Is that why they made a prediction engine? Were the Vex on Mercury meant to help the Witness expedite the path to the final shape? Were they left in limbo because of Savathun's betrayal? Osiris saw what the Witness's final shape would result in within the Infinite Forest, was this the end goal the Vex were meant to look for? Was the Witness using the Vex as herbicides on Mercury,

I don't know what's going on with the Vex or the Black Garden or Mercury and its implications are driving me fucking insane. I don't even know what I'm getting at here anymore I just need you to understand that there is Something Here and I Can't Fucking Touch It. I started off trying to find meaning behind the change in the Vex if they changed at all but the rabbit hole just kept getting deeper.

Do the vex not understand Paracausality because the Traveler and the Veil were once one? I mean I made up this whole apple metaphor about how if you knew everything about an apple but then suddenly the apple was split into two separate things and the apple simply did not even exist as a concept anymore wouldn't you be just as confused? Also they say the Vex need to Veil in order to finally understand Paracausality. Is that why they don't? Because they only knew the two when they were one?

Does anyone hear me. What the fuck is happening. What's going on. What is the purpose of the Lighthouses. Why did the Witness plant the Vex there. Why did the Witness call Calus specifically to the Mercury anomaly. What's so important about Vance and the Tones for Osiris's memories of them to have possibly been removed!? New Pinned, and on More Or Less Leaving Twitter

As the old one got long-winded (it kind of turned into an explanation for why the policy that broke me was bad at points, this is less of a concern now because it just keeps getting worse), I'm gonna make a shorter pinned now, lasting until I feel a majority of people following my Twitter accounts that have any vested interest in me make their way over here and elsewhere.

As of... A while ago, honestly, I have decided I will no longer use Twitter for art, lore, or videos. I will still use Twitter to promote them, but I admittedly do not anticipate that the platform will persist as a viable place for trans people to exist for very long, so this is mostly to wink-wink nudge-nudge people following me onto other platforms that will house my content for the foreseeable future. I am likely to continue interacting with stuff on Twitter for as long as my accounts remain intact, and may post preview snippets in announcement tweets. At the current time, I do not have a means or intent to monetize, let alone paywall, my content, save possibly through commissions- if you see a post from me that is a preview I urge you to check the thread for the link to the full version. These will not be paywalled for the foreseeable future- I would like to emphasize this as a previous post that had a cropped version of the image and telling viewers to visit the link in the reply. The full version seemed to achieve greatly more interaction than did either the reply with the link in it, or the Newgrounds post it linked to that showed the whole thing. I think people assumed this was a preview for a Patreon post and moved on, it's not. I don't want to get too pushy because personally I hate setting up accounts for things I'm unfamiliar with but, like, it's free, a lot of artists are going there, and Twitter is in very bad shape.

Now that I have you on this site, I urge you to check my Carrd for the others. Tumblr will be mostly for off-the-cuff writing and WIP/concept art, Wix will be more organized, Newgrounds will be finished art, Reddit is there (for now), and DeviantArt will be backup art if I ever forgive them for their little debacle. I intend to eventually start streaming on Twitch, possibly without voice just to get it off the ground in a reasonable timeframe, and posting algorithm fodder to YouTube. I intend to eventually have a Discord but even at my size having a Discord that anyone can just join requires moderation and I can't really do that right now, not the least alone.

Slow fashion has become the “ethical” alternative to fast fashion, offering a vision of sustainability, mindful consumption, and resistance to overproduction. But on social media, where activism and aesthetics collide, I keep asking myself: is slow fashion a real disruption, or is it just another trend shaped by algorithms?

The Power—and Limits—of Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship, as Choi and Cristol (2021) put it, is about using digital spaces critically—to call out greenwashing, uplift ethical labor practices, and shift conversations around consumption. And slow fashion influencers and activists are doing that. But here’s the catch: social media isn’t a neutral tool. Carah and Dobson (2016) talk about “algorithmic hotness,” meaning the system favors what looks good over what critiques deeper problems. Fast fashion hauls flood my feed, while critical slow fashion posts barely make it to the surface. Duffy and Meisner (2022) back this up, showing how content that pushes against consumerism often gets algorithmically buried.

It’s frustrating but unsurprising. Platforms are built to prioritize commerce and engagement, not activism. So, while slow fashion is fighting the good fight, it often feels like it’s fighting uphill on platforms designed to sell, not challenge.

Influencers in a Capitalist Machine

Take influencers like Venetia La Manna—they’re raising awareness and calling out industry giants, but as Drenten et al. (2021) explain, their labor is still commodified. I find it ironic (and a bit disheartening) that influencers working to dismantle fast fashion still need to “play the game” of platform capitalism. Honestly, scrolling through slow fashion content, I sometimes feel like it’s just a more “conscious” version of the same curated, aspirational feed.

And despite the growing popularity of slow fashion, the industry’s structural issues remain intact. Fast fashion is still thriving, with projections of hitting $3.3 trillion by 2030 (Statista, 2023; McKinsey & Company, 2021). Morozov’s (2011) critique of “clicktivism” hits hard here: are we making real change, or just consuming activism as another aesthetic online?

The Future of Slow Fashion and Digital Citizenship

The slow fashion movement illustrates the tensions between activism, algorithmic control, and influencer capitalism. While digital platforms provide visibility for ethical fashion advocacy, platform governance ultimately dictates whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced (Van Dijck et al., 2018).

For slow fashion activism to drive meaningful change, it must move beyond individual consumer choices and aesthetic branding, toward policy-driven accountability and corporate regulation. If digital citizenship is to be a force for structural transformation, it must engage critically with the very platforms that shape online activism.

And while I do understand where they’re coming from I genuinely don’t think they realize how deeply ingrained Narilamb is in this fandom and it kinda pisses me off

I think, as members of fandom specifically on tumblr, we’re at a unique kind of crossroads. The usual advice, which is to mind your own business and stay out of tags and fandom spaces you don’t like, doesn’t apply here as well.

The user interface used to allow for this kind of “good neighbors respect the fence line” mentality, back when you had to make strictly hashtag based searches to find what you wanted. Now that tumblr’s incorporated a kind of limited “algorithm” into some of its features (suggesting accounts, tags, and content to you) it’s much harder to keep these fences intact.

I can kind of understand the expectations remaining the same even while the way that the internet works has changed- it can take users a while to notice some changes and tumblr isn’t very transparent about how everything works. That said, I notice a lot of people blaming individual users for breaching fandom conduct when we don’t have the privacy that fandom spaces used to allow back in like 2012. Now, no matter what you do, you’ll see what everyone’s up to whether you asked for it or not.

Tumblr’s algorithm has recommended things that range from ‘thing I like’ to ‘not my thing but okay’ to ‘thing I hate’ to ‘straight up harmful’. It once took me like a week to get the site to stop recommending me “pro-anorexia”content (which still exists on this site in the year of our savior 2024). We’re living in an apartment complex with no locks and sometimes no doors now and I think the community living here will have to have a serious conversation about what we do about that.

The simple advice that used to work no longer does and, yeah, we can try to censor every mention of something we don’t like if we want to talk critically about something, but that isn’t really a long-term solution to an internet that is increasingly disinterested in letting us stay in our niches.

A lot of people may not like that we’re “negative” (read: would like to point out our criticisms and not just be constantly positive about the things we like) or that we’re “filling the tag with hate” (something we no longer have any say in since hashtags don’t work like that anymore) but we haters deserve space in fandom too and we’re not their enemy. The real enemy is the platform that won’t let us all mind our own business.

Ruling the sub-realm of Xhiv-Thabbas, the Split Tongue are a Kabal in nothing but name. Propped up by "Archon" Kallista as a formidable force of pirates, reavers, bandits and outlaws, the Kabal is actually formed of hundreds, if not thousands of smaller bands, gangs and crews operating within their own districts and plying their own murderous business. The sub-realms isolated nature lead it to attract many outliers of Commorite society and fostered a more covert form of the violence oh-so common in mainline Dark Eldar society. Being a port-city, the realm attracts plenty of oddities and is noted for having a substantial slave and xenos population thriving despite the danger.

Facebook is a rotten company, rotten from the top down, its founder, board and top execs are sociopaths and monsters, committers of non-hyperbolic, no-fooling crimes against humanity. i can recognize that tiktok is an important platform for many marginalized creators who would not otherwise get their content seen, who are trying to promote their work or share their story or find likeminded people who might share their identity. i can also know in my heart that tiktok is social media at its worst: misinformation being shared with no immediate method of fact-checking, the company collecting an “abnormal” and “appalling amount of data to mine” creators appropriating and bastardizing ideas and material from cultures and identities that they have no right to use, a built-in camera filter that ‘corrects’ your face and a million other ‘beauty’ filters that promote unrealistic body images (this has been proven to affect the mental health of minors and is also, unsurprisingly, racist), the constant sharing and promotion of videos of children despite the company promising the US gov.t to change its privacy policies regarding this, the censorship of lgbtq+ content and Black content and content created by other marginalized groups, the removal of videos complaining about in-app harassment while the hateful comments/videos remain intact and online, an algorithm that displays a racial bias and also creates echo chambers where the app tailors user feeds to their ‘interests’ (based on data it mines from their phone) which can very easily indoctrinate users into harmful political ideologies like conservatism/fascism, and more. in my opinion it isn’t worth it to go through all that for the end result of getting to watch some videos, because the majority of the content on tiktok is unfunny easy drivel, made palatable through repetition and recognition. but sure yeah go ahead and send me a video of some white ablebodied seventeen year old cosplayer lipsyncing to a bo burnham song i’ll really enjoy it i’m definitely going to watch the whole thing and it’s for sure going to be worth my time
