Congrats, Anon! You get to be one of today's lucky 10,000!
I'm talking about this big ol' book right here:
Tumblr media
It was part of a series of books that were mostly epistolary (i.e. written as journal entries) in style, and ranged from semi-historical subjects such as Egyptology and Piratology, to fictional stuff like Wizardology and Monsterology, with a handful of modern-day stuff as well like Oceanology and Spyology!
(My brother got the Spyology one for his birthday one year and I was so goddamn jealous, and frankly read it more than he ever did)
They were massive and chunky books, with lots of little fold-out sections and extra notes in paper pockets, and gorgeous illustrations as you can see above. You'll still spot them in the kids sections of bookstores and libraries a lot of the time, as they make for excellent display books, even if they're... oh gods, they're nearly 20 years old now, I feel old....
But yeah! They're very pretty and very fun books, had plastic gemstones on the covers, and were exactly the sort of thing child-me (and adult-me, tbh) gravitated towards in bookstores
