hi eza :) i dont know if youll be able to answer this, but i saw that you watched the raw unsubbed vid of cherry maho and i was wondering if you spoke japanese/were versed enough in the culture? im trying to figure out when it would be appropriate for kuro/ada to call each other by first names but googling it always says it's pretty much just family and spouses... but ive also seen other places that friends can call each other by first names? i just wanna know where the line is lmao
hi there! i’ll do my best to answer you.
it would be pretty appropriate for them to call each other by their given names once they start dating. not all couples do that, of course, because it can be a pretty big step in the progression of intimacy when you start calling each other by your first name. but again, it would not be weird or out of line to use your partner’s given name once you become a couple. and as you mentioned, friends call each other by first names too sometimes. it would indicate a high level of familiarity, yeah, but sometimes it might also be because everyone in their circle calls that person by their given name, so it wouldn’t be out of place if you also call them by their given name. this is kind of rare, though, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution and politeness and call people by their family name when you’ve just met. unless the person says it out right that you can call them by their given name, of course ;D there are best friends who have known each other for decades who still call each other by their family names too tho. what i’m trying to say is that there would be instances where people call each other by family names, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not close :)
this isn’t really related, but one other thing i’d like to bring up is 敬語 (keigo), which is honorifics/polite language. adachi and kurosawa don’t use it when they speak to each other, because they’re the same age and they’re peers of the same level (i.e., they started working at the same time). but kurosawa and tsuge use it when talking to each other (and i’m talking beyond referring to each other using the suffix さん), which i thought was a pretty neat detail since they’re also the same age group. but because they’ve just met and are only acquaintances, it’s not weird that they use 敬語。
sorry, i think i went on a bit of a tangent here lol, but i hope it helped!

This would cause even the best seamstresses personal grief.  Who were they kidding? Shion had grown up learning how to sew directly from their mother back home in Nagoya, and everything right down to the choice in the pattern was awful. Right brow twitched, accompanied by a sigh that escaped from parted lips. Holding back was difficult, and the more time they spent looking the attempt at sewing a name upon a blue hand towel, the worse they felt.
“―Actually, sensei, this is abysmal work. I can’t even read the kanji of the name you attempted to sew into this. The fabric choice is harder to work with if you’re going to do this type of stitching.” Lavender irises are apologetic, yes, but Shion was known to be painfully blunt most of the time. Their thumbs work their way over the fabric, the kindhearted something in which he’d been attempting was present ( was this for a special somebody? why else would he work so hard as this? ), he just needed aid in the execution. A shame they hadn’t brought their mobile sewing kit with them, it was usually a staple in their bag - for unfortunate emergencies such as these.
Tumblr media
The smile that curls upon lips is meant to reassure, after all, they didn't want to step over a line and outright completely insult their teacher’s sewing attempt. “I can help you if you’d like. I sew a lot of my own clothes. In addition to constantly mending my boyfriend’s hero costume. I know a thing or two.”
