At the Other Desk (Part One)

Premise: Over the year of working for Lonewolf Products, Shawn has become a staple member of the marketing and presentation team, but when Cassie starts working at the desk across from him, he suddenly can’t focus as well. As he pines and watches her boyfriend, Ashton, cancel on her time after time again, he starts to feel like he can’t hold back his rude comments towards the other man. When a company event comes up, Shawn steps in to make sure she attends. When the pair seem to be hitting it off and Shawn lets his feelings slip, it’s hard to tell how this relationship could go.

Word Count: 2,800

Even if she was just sorting through paperwork, she was still breathtaking. The way she would bite her lip when trying to read someone’s bad handwriting or how her face relaxed once she finished a pile, always drew me more to her. I tended to just tune out while watching her, my other desk mate having to snap me out of it. It didn’t matter though because she was taken by a guy that was always sending her flowers as apologies and never taking her on proper dates. I grimaced when I saw the receptionist walking over with another bouquet of roses, the third one this week.

“Oh, thank you,” she said giving Jade a smile. I watched as she read the car that was attached, a small smile coming across her face before she put them with the others.

“Shawn, you’re doing it again,” my desk mate, Calum whispered.

“She doesn’t like roses,” I whispered shaking my head and going back to the presentation in front of me.

“Dude, why do you even care?” Calum asked and I just shook my head again.

“Because she’s clearly not being treated right and it drives me insane because I have a crush on her, okay?” I angrily whispered back. Calum put his hands up and went back to the spreadsheet on his computer. She didn’t deserve to be sent flowers every day for always making mistakes. If she was mine, I’d never do that to her. I shook my head again, snapping myself out of the thoughts. I couldn’t help looking up at her every once and a while though. Not when she kept biting her lip and tapping her pen against her lips. I finished my presentation and went over to Michael to hand the flash drive to him.

“All done?” he asked moving his headset away from his mouth.

“Yeah. All the information is there. Just need those graphics put in,” I said and gave him a thumbs up before heading back to my desk. I nearly tripped when I saw him standing there talking to her.

“Shawn, you remember Ashton,” she said smiling up at me from her chair.

“Yeah. Nice to see you again,” I said putting on my fakest smile.

“Are you going to be at the company event tomorrow night too?” Ashton asked. My eyes flickered to the hand he had on her shoulder. It looked like he was holding her too tightly.

“Yeah. Are you going to be there?” I asked sitting back at my desk.

“Sadly I can’t make it. You know how the stock business is and all,” he said waving a hand around like he owned the place. It drove me insane. I’ve never wanted to punch someone more in my life.

“Yeah totally. Are you still coming then Cas?” I asked using her nickname just to piss him off.

“Well, I wouldn’t have anyone to go with,” she said and I immediately noticed the proud smile he had on his face.

“You can come with me and Calum,” I suggested knowing that if I said just me, he’d freak out in front of everyone.

“You two wouldn’t mind?” she asked, a small smile starting to come across her face at the idea that she’d get to go in the end.

“Nope. You’ll probably make the night more fun so I wouldn’t have to hear Shawn talk about production all night,” Calum said trying to help me out.

“Then, yeah I’ll go,” she said starting to write it down on her little calendar she has on her desk.

“Are you sure about that babe?” he asked and I watched as the knuckles of his free hand went white from him clenching it so tightly.

“Yeah. It’s a company event. If I don’t go it would be rude,” she said and I smirked a bit at her standing up to him.

“Fine. I’ll see you later,” he said walking away, not even kissing her goodbye.

“What a dick,” I mumbled and immediately looked up to see if she heard me. I could tell that she had from her staring at me.

“Sorry. We’re um, we’re leaving at six from my place. Do you want us to pick you up or meet at mine?” I asked trying to defuse the situation.

“I’ll come to yours. You still live by that Italian restaurant?” she asked surprising me that she remembered it from the one time she was over.

“Like he’d move. The little lady Ida loves him and gives him free food all the time,” Calum teased nudging my shoulder gently.

“Shut up,” I groaned, looking back to my computer. I didn’t miss the smile on her face though or the way she laughed a little. I also didn’t miss the way she rolled her shoulder as if she was still trying to get rid of his hand on her.

My doorbell rang at exactly five-forty-five, the time I told Cassie to be here so we could all leave together. I have never opened my front door faster. The moment I open it, I’m blown away again. She’s standing there in a beautiful, but simple black dress that hugs her body perfectly, a navy cardigan draped over her shoulders, and a pair of low-heeled black sandals.

“You look, just, wow,” I stuttered making her giggle. I wanted to make her giggle more than just that one time.

“Thank you. You look pretty good yourself Shawn,” she said smiling at me. I had on my usual company event attire, my white button down, black suit jacket, and black dress pants. I didn’t think it was anything special until now.

“Thanks. Come on in. Calum is fixing his hair,” I said opening the door wider for her. The smell of her perfume filled my lungs as she walked by and I could have sworn that my feelings deepened in that moment. She was still shorter than me, but it wasn’t as big of a height difference anymore. I was still a head taller than her, but she didn’t have to look up as much.

“Okay, the hair has to look good. Leave me alone Mendes,” Calum shouted from the bathroom. I laughed at him and noticed Cassie looking around.

“You redecorated a bit,” she commented, still looking around like she was trying to commit everything to memory.

“Needed to grow up a little bit. Plus Ida got mad whenever she came over and saw that I still hadn’t hung up the painting she gave me for Christmas,” I said nodding towards the flower painting in my hall.

“It’s a beautiful piece. Why did she give it to you if you don’t mind me asking?” she asked walking over to it. I felt weirdly nervous having her in my home even though she’s been here before. It was different this time. She was in a relationship and we weren’t celebrating finishing a project by getting drunk. I still thought about that night. The way her eyes were always so bright from the alcohol and how cute she was when she stumbled over her feet a bit. The way her voice rasped when she asked to sleep on my couch because she didn’t want to risk walking home. The way she had moaned my name in her sleep. All of it was stuck in my head and it would be until the day I met somebody else if that could ever happen.

“I couldn’t be with my family over Christmas, so she brought it over. It’s my mom’s favorite flower,” I said smiling up at the pale pink rendition of a daffodil.

“Why couldn’t you be with your family?” she asked. I caught her staring at me from the corner of my eye.

“They live in Toronto. It would have been hard to go up to Canada to see them with all the work that we had,” I explained shrugging a bit. It wasn’t that big of a deal to me. I talked to them every day and they were coming to visit in a few weeks.

“I didn’t know you were from Canada,” she said quietly.

“Surprise,” I teased giving her a smile. She seemed to ease from it and from Calum stomping down my stairs.

“Geez mate. The whole street can hear you,” I scolded making Calum flip me off.

“Cas, beautiful as always. Ready everyone?” he asked straightening his jacket a bit.

“I’m ready. Shawn?” she asked and the way my name sounded in her voice gave me chills.

“Yeah. I’m ready,” I said and grabbed my keys, locking up my apartment before leaving. I noticed Cassie shiver once we stepped out into the night. I pulled off my own jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.

“Shawn, you don’t have to,” she said about to take the jacket off.

“You’re cold. I’m not gonna let you freeze while we walk over,” I said shrugging. The cold wasn’t getting to me the same way it was getting to her and if it did, I wouldn’t mind being a little cold for her.

She gave me my jacket back as we rounded the corner of the street, the hotel only being a few feet away. I gave her a smile and put it back on quickly.

“Shawn, need you for press,” my boss, Daniel said. I gave Calum a look before heading over to the line of journalists that were waiting.

“So, what can we look forward to from this product presentation?” one of the female journalists asked. She was batting her eyelashes at me and clearly trying to be flirty. I had to keep myself from rolling my eyes.

“You can expect Daniel to blow you all away with the new product and the launch information. Our graphic designer Michael worked extremely hard to give everyone the best viewing experience,” I said making sure to smile politely before moving onto the next one. It was the same question over and over again. Halfway through the line, I could feel someone’s eyes watching me. I glanced over and saw Cassie with Calum by the bar watching me. It was a weird role reversal seeing as I was usually the one watching her.

“And Mr. Mendes can we expect to see more presentations from you in the future?” another female journalist asked, gently placing her hand on my arm. Another eye roll had to be suppressed.

“I sure hope so. If you’ll excuse me, I have to go get ready. Please enjoy the night,” I said and walked away, going right to Cassie.

“You handled them well. That one seemed to really like you,” she commented, eyes still focused on the one I was just talking to.

“Too bad they don’t have a chance,” I said, not realizing what I was inferring until after I had said it.

“Oh, why? Shawnie boy taken?” she teased, but there was something behind her eyes that told me she was actually looking for an answer.

“Nope. I have my eyes on someone, but she’s kinda taken herself. Which sucks because her boyfriend is a complete asshat,” I said deciding that I would be completely honest this time and not hold anything back.

“She must be really something if she’s got your eye then,” she said and I couldn’t help but think if she knew I was talking about her.

“She’s the most spectacular woman I’ve ever met. She’s really cute when she’s drunk too,” I said trying to make it more obvious that I was talking about her. There was a moment of realization that flickered through her eyes and at the same moment, the presentation was starting. The lights dimmed, but I was still staring at her and she was still staring at me.

“Cas,”

“Shawn, I’m not really available,” she said at the same time as me.

“I know.”

We continued to stare at each other until I got called up by Daniel to take a bow for making everything come together. Even on stage, my eyes were on her and how there was a blush coming across her cheeks from my stare. When I left stage, I went back to answer more questions.

“So when is the product coming to stores?” the same journalist that had her hand on me asked.

“It’ll be coming in early October. We still have some testing to do,” I said giving her another polite smile that I knew looked just like the previous one I had given her.

“Shawn, I need to see you,” I heard Cassie’s voice cut through the questions. I turned and found her standing just a little behind me. She looked nervous and it made every part of me go on high alert.

“Excuse me,” I said and walked with her into the lobby.

“Why would you tell me that you have feelings for me when I’m taken?” she questioned, a slight tone of anger to her voice.

“In case you hadn’t realized Cas, you’re not exactly happy with Mr. Flowers,” I said shaking my head at even the thought of him.

“What if I am?” she continued. It felt like we were arguing like a couple even though we weren’t dating.

“Really? How many times has he actually taken you out instead of sending you flowers that you don’t like?” I asked keeping my voice even, trying to make sure we didn’t bring attention to ourselves.

“How did you?”

“I pay attention okay? He doesn’t make you happy, he treats you like shit and when he had his hand on your shoulder today, I’m pretty sure that he bruised you,” I said my eyes drifting to her shoulder right away. She usually wore her purse on her right shoulder, but it was on her left.

“Shawn,” she tried and it didn’t make me any calmer.

“I’m not wrong am I?” I asked taking a small step closer to her. I wouldn’t yell. I refused to yell at her and scare her in that way. I wouldn’t become the asshole that she for some reason decided was a good match for her.

“No,” she said her eyes going to the floor.

“Is this the only time it’s happened?” I asked my mind being more concerned with her well being than anything else.

“Yes and I mean that. He cancels a lot on me because of work and I know that isn’t a good excuse,” she said looking up and noticing that I had gotten closer to her again.

“Why are you with him then?” I asked lifting her chin up to really look at me this time.

“I don’t know anymore,” she said and her voice made her sound so lost.

“You don’t live with him right?” I continued not trying to make a move, just trying to think properly with her brown eyes staring up at me.

“No.”

“Stay with me tonight,” I said, the confidence coming out of nowhere and not meant to sound like I was asking her to sleep with me.

“What?” she asked, her eyebrows furrowed and it was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.

“Stay with me tonight. Let’s talk about this. Let’s eat random food, watch a movie, just be in each other’s company. You can sleep in my bed and I’ll take the couch, just stay with me tonight,” I said and it was taking every bit of self restraint I had to not kiss her.

“Okay, but I have nothing to wear besides this dress,” she said and I just smiled.

“I have some of my sister’s clothes at my place that I’m pretty sure will fit you. She’s short like you,” I said smiling at her.

“I’m not that short,” she argued, a small pout coming across her lips.

“Whatever you say. I’ll text Calum that we’re leaving,” I said while pulling out my phone.

“Wait, right now? You have press to do though,” she said clearly surprised by how quick I was to drop everything for her.

“Daniel’s got it. He loves the attention anyways and too late, I already texted him. Let’s go,” I said offering her my arm to walk with me. She laughed a bit, but took my arm anyways. I put my jacket around her again once we were outside, smiling when she stuck her arms through it and her hands didn’t come close to reaching the end of the sleeves.

“Shawn?” she asked while I was unlocking my door.

“Yeah?” I said opening the door and letting her walk in first.

“I’m gonna break up with him,” she said her voice full of confidence. I turned around to watch her pull off my jacket.

“Cas, you don’t have to make that decision right-”

“I’m breaking up with him right now and through a text because that’s what he deserves and then I’m gonna turn my phone off. Then, I’m gonna spend the night with you and laugh with you and all that because I want to,” she said and I had never been more attracted to her until that moment.

“If that’s what you want,” I said unable to help the smile that was coming across my face.

“It’s exactly what I want.”

I was not cited on the ticket I received for any accident, only for no insurance. The officer informed me verbally that the accident was my fault only because she had the right of way but that there was nothing they could do about it because of the no fault zone policy. Anyway, now her insurance company is coming after me to collect payment of the $1500 they paid for her damages. I have not agreed to pay this amount because it was a no fault zone and I don't feel I should pay for it. She should not have been going that fast in a busy parking lot with a car full of kids. Although the unofficial technicality states that I was at fault, legally no one was at fault. Her insurance company is also threatening to have my license suspended if I do not pay the amount specified. I did not think that they, as a private company, had the power to have that happen. OK, so I got my car insurance renewal to start on 16 May, and it went up from 40 a month to 60, for no gosh darned reason. Grrr. I know that the insurance has gone up a lot, and I think they blame the compensation claims for this, but up a THIRD! Jeeeeeez! Last year, it went up from 35 a month to 50 and I had a whinge down the phone at them, and they reduced it to 40 by changing the recovery a bit (I don't get help now unless I am more than a mile from home; but the chances are I would be when I broke down anyway, and even if I was half a mile away, I could walk back!) so I agreed to change that. So I rang them today and they said they can lower it a fiver because I am a 'loyal' customer, (so down to 55 a month.) Big deal! I am nearly 40, I passed my test 20 years ago, and I have been with them 10 years and NEVER made a claim, and yet they bump my premium by a third! I am like It's a LOT of dosh. Does this seem like a ludicrous leap to you? Has yours gone up a lot too? Does this sound like a high amount to pay? (55 to 60 a month.) Or reasonable for a 38 year old woman? It does include recovery in this quote, and the recovery is about 130. But 2 years ago, I was paying 35, and this year they are asking for 60 a month!
