Sure, there’s no denying the childlike glee of causing mass destruction in a sandbox like GTA or landing the perfect snipe shot in any number of Call of Duty-esque title, but I was always far more interested in the ‘why’ of it all, getting a closer look at the motivation spurring characters to behave as they do. Plus, games dedicated to this exploration generally had much more respectful and 3-dimensional roles/portrayals for their female characters, and as a female gamer who started wondering if there was really a place for me in this industry that was constantly being inundated with portrayals of hyper sexualized, hyper shallow female characters, these were the games that made me stick with the format. It’s why companies like Naughty Dog and Insomniac held such a special place in my heart.

But I soon realized that Telltale was in that same caliber of excellence. Many of my fellow gaming friends shied away from these games because they didn’t like  format of point-and-click and quick time events. But for me, those reasons were precisely why I liked Telltale’s games so much. It harkened back to the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novels I loved as a kid, where not only could you exercise some level of control, but you would also endure the repercussions of your decisions. It was a very real-world experience absent from many virtual stories, but Telltale mastered injecting the real (loyalty vs. betrayal, one vs. the many) into the surreal (a small girl? a wolf sheriff??).

It wasn’t even just that, it was the fact that Telltale had a knack for injecting new life and intrigue into properties whose stories had been done ad nauseam. By the time The Walking Dead came out, most nerds (myself included) were familiar with the comics or even the first few episodes of the TV show, but through the eyes of Clem, we were able to view the vileness and hopelessness of the setting with renewed revulsion as we watched the events play out through the eyes of a child, rather than a grown sheriff. And then in Guardians of the Galaxy—a movie franchise that took great pains in presenting Peter Quill as a roguish, man child with daddy issues—Telltale chose to go a less traveled route in exploring Peter’s relationship with his mother (the whole reason he has the Awesome Mix in the first place), while also giving depth and space to Gamora and Nebula’s difficult sister relationship. Plus, they even made me care about Batman, which I thought would never happen after constant retellings of the angst-ridden caped crusader who lost his parents and who’s man pain was so grand, he could never let anyone else in again.
