I am getting very close to having caught up on all of 9-1-1, and I think what I really like about this show over other procedurals (and this is mostly based off of Grey's Anatomy, which is the procedural I have watched the most of) is that the main cast has been SO steady. Like there's not a revolving door of characters leaving or getting killed off. When my favourite character gets injured I know they have some very thick plot-armour and will probably not die. Only one main character has left permanently (the 911 operator from season 1),and even she came back for a special episode. (okay also Athena's ex and her son left too, but they were always more secondary characters than main ones. And they didn't DIE.)
Like there's so much more of a tight-knitted family dynamic in this show than any other procedural I've ever watched. It has more of a feeling of a comedy cast than a drama cast in that way.
And the writing for the characters is always consistent. Like with House MD, House's opinions would change so much episode to episode (like one ep he'll be a trans ally, and the next he's a transphobe, just because that's what the plot and the writer needed him to be), but in this show every character has a distinct personality, they all have growth moments, and like yeah sometimes the writers fuck around with tormenting some characters with trauma, but they also all get chances to be funny and goofy too.
Also, everyone's not constantly fucking each other and then having fights over it and their character becoming obsolete - if a ship sails it might have some bumpy weather but the ship never sinks once it gets going.
Like, it's just really NICE. It's consistent in a way that these sort of shows, that usually need to have a lot of shock value to them, don't usually have. All the shock value comes from the cases and natural disasters they deal with instead of from killing off your favourite character every season. I don't think I'd have gotten through this many seasons so quickly (quick for me, at least) if the main cast weren't so strong and loveable.

Stream On: The Rise of Twitch
Tumblr media
With Covid-19 came a new era of social media growth and prosperity for many digital services worldwide. The one I want to talk about today is Twitch. Twitch is a social media platform that lets you stream live content to anyone, anywhere. The service primarily consists of video game streams, but they are branching out to providing space and promotion for other forms of live content. That being said, live streaming grew 45% at the beginning of the pandemic and is now up by 99%. These numbers are an amazing achievement for Twitch, as they are now up to 1.645 billion hours watched per month. It is a great way to become an influencer and market yourself, all from the comfort of your own home. I have a friend who streams regularly; for the sake of her privacy I will use her handle: Harmonylb. She started a Twitch streaming channel during Covid-19. She says it is a great way to connect with others and relieve stress during the lockdown, and has seen a profit with 3K followers. It can be stressful at times since you are marketing yourself, but it is worth it for the friends you can make. Let's dive into some tips and tricks to start your own channel at home.
There are a few things you need to know to get started and build a successful streaming channel. As is the case with many other platforms, the first step is to set clear goals and come up with a schedule. It is very important to be consistent for your followers and post exciting new content often to retain viewers and gain new followers. Twitch is very interactive in the fact that it has a live chat box going on along with your stream. It is incredibly important to talk to your followers and get to know them, answer questions, and follow along in the chat. Most streamers have a pre-programmed notification alert when a new person subscribes to be able to thank the new follower. My friend Harmonylb has an adorable graphic and music that pops up and makes a sincere thank you to everyone who chooses to pay the subscription fees. It is a great way to make sure fans never go unnoticed or feel neglected, especially when you are in the middle of a game.
Tumblr media
Harmonylb mostly streams Fortnite and Valorant, some of the most popular games on the market right now. A key element in viewership is what games you choose to stream. You want to play games you are passionate about, good at, or games that are at the height of their popularity. The best outcome is when you can check off all three of those categories. If you are passionate about your streams, then it is very likely that your audience will be too. A great example of that is the channel Critical Role, where a group of talented voice actors who are all close friends play Dungeons & Dragons. They check off all three of the above categories, and it shows in their viewership and ad revenue. Additionally, many Streamers sell their own merch to their loyal fans, but that is only worth focusing on as a goal once you have reached a high enough following.
Tumblr media
Then, of course, you want to link and showcase your other social media platforms for your followers to keep updated on streams, charity events, and more. It is also very popular to put edited versions of streams on YouTube where many can enjoy condensed versions of their most popular streams if they missed them, or if they become new fans who end up joining the live chat and being a part of the community. A popular streamer is Nyanners, who is a VTuber (virtual YouTuber), has 552K followers on Twitch and her YouTube channel has 1.18 million subscribers with her highest view count for a video being around 6.5 million views. Not everyone wants to watch a full stream which can be 5+ hours long, so having a YouTube channel with condensed videos is a smart business tactic.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, as the video-streaming community of Twitch expands and grows, so do the opportunities to market yourself. It is a growing field with many successful influencers that have brand deals and a chance to get even more profitable as the number of hours skyrockets. Covid-19 has changed the world in many ways, and with that comes a new frontier for social media marketing and you!

~ YOUR PRESENCE IS THE PRESENT ~ I believe, think, know and feel that I can be fully present in the moment thereby being a gift for others. I am ready, willing and able to give my time and myself to benefit others knowing that it will annure to my benefit. In so doing, I know, when, where, how and why to extend my time and the jolliness of the season to others less fortunate than myself. I am asking in all languages and throughout all time lines and so it is.
From the Fish Box
Q & A with Jimmy: Q) "It was so great to meet you in person and to have a session with you on Friday!  It was quite powerful and helpful and I enjoyed my time with you. I was wondering if I’m having a healing crisis now...feeling sad, maybe depressed and like I’m being neglected. I’m becoming aware of all the ways I’m hard on myself and not very self loving....so I totally understand how that will be reflected back to me. I’m very aware how much I rely on others for validation, approval, etc. is this all coming up as part of my release?? What do you suggest for me to feel some relief as I feel like I just want to hibernate and cry....Thank you!!!" - Jane M. / Tampa A) "Welcome to the holidays and the winter Blues.... ninety-nine times out of a hundred it's not even us we're picking up on all the angst: politics, money issues, covid, sadness of others etcetera etcetera. Go away a remark right here to let me know what you suppose or if I would like so as to add your title to the listing of bloggers who I impressed to begin a YouTube channel.
Video Transcript:
One strategy to get extra subscribers on YouTube is by utilizing a function that’s accessible to all YouTubers known as Video Annotations. That is the primary in a two-part sequence the place I will present you find out how to entry the interface to arrange the annotations. I will describe how they’re totally different and the way you should utilize each to your benefit.
The primary sort of annotation we’ll focus on is known as InVideo programming.
Now what’s actually cool about integrating InVideo programming and utilizing it to advertise your channel is that you’ve got two several types of  InVideo Programming. One as you will see on the prime here’s a hyperlink for somebody to subscribe to your channel. The opposite one I’ve positioned on the backside proper and that is a hyperlink to a well-liked video that I wanna carry consideration to. So now let’s examine find out how to setup InVideo Programming.
Up on the prime proper hand aspect click on on the down arrow go to YouTube Settings after which view extra options from there go to the nav bar on the left and you may see InVideo Programming.
The opposite approach you possibly can entry InVideo Programming is when you’re in your Video Supervisor. As soon as once more, over on the left hand aspect you will see Channel Settings after which InVideo Programming. And there is one final possibility for accessing this additionally you possibly can entry it out of your dashboard and right here once more there’s the Channel Settings and the InVideo Programming.
Now you will see right here you possibly can set the featured channel which is the subscription one which I confirmed you earlier or featured video you get the selection of placing on the prime proper left, backside left, for the underside proper that is one thing that you should take a look at based mostly on what is going on on in most of your movies as a result of keep in mind with InVideo programming these options are going to seem in all the movies now throughout your channel.
So take into consideration the movies that you’ve got and take into consideration what is likely to be the perfect placement. The following possibility you possibly can select is whether or not you need the featured channel to seem on the finish of the video, at a customized begin time or all through your complete video. On this case I’ve determined that I would like it on the finish of the video.
Then you possibly can say how lengthy you need it to final and this could simply be in seconds. Now you even have these identical selections with the featured video. I made a decision to make use of this one explicit video that I’ve that is known as What to Wear Your YouTube Videos and by the best way if you have not seen that video but – test it out cuz it is kinda humorous.
But when I made a decision that I needed to make use of a distinct video, I might simply come right here and take away it then this could give me that choice to pic one other video. Both the newest add or select the video. Now I am simply gonna put that one again in there.
I would like this featured video to seem a bit bit sooner then that function channel. Mess around with these instances and take a look at them and see which works greatest for you.
Within the subsequent video we’ll speak concerning the different annotations that you may apply to particular person movies.

eCom PPC Academy Review
eCom PPC Academy Review (Taylor Lane Course)
With how popular eCommerce is right now, it’s not difficult to expect many courses teaching you how to start. However, it’s definitely disappointing to see how most of them fail to deliver value according to its price.
Today, we’ll find out if eCom PPC Academy, by Marco Rodriguez, can pass our quality test. It was released back in 2017, and it’s quite old already, but since it still seems to attract the interest of many people, let’s dive into it.
Who’s the author?
Marco is an entrepreneur and YouTube content creator. His knowledge revolves around Google Ads, and he always recommends it as the best way to find success with an eCommerce venture; according to him, it’s the best way to direct traffic to your store. He has a store to prove his statements, and he claims to be a consultant on the platform.
His YouTube channel is quite modest, just above 10,000 subscribers and 500,000 views among his videos. He’s usually uploading content on eCommerce, and his videos range from the common tips and strategies to advanced testing and scaling techniques.
He’s also fairly active on Quora, and you can usually find him answering to questions regarding eCommerce. He also has an Instagram account, but he keeps it clear from any business promotion. It’s just for personal use and doesn’t offer many photos.
Reviewing eCom PPC Academy
As already mentioned, the course was released back in 2017 on the Teachables platform. After some time, it migrated to Kartra on an independent web page. However, it can still be found on Teachables, so be careful when navigating the platform. Teachables places a disclaimer, luckily.
It changed because the course started with a focus on Google Adwords, so it had to be changed once that interface was modified into what we now know as Google Ads.
Its current iteration offers a nice interface, and it’s divided in 6 different modules, with 25 videos overall about creating and promoting an online business. All videos are labelled and provide a description detailing what you’ll learn from each. They also have a nice checklist summarizing the key points.
When you buy it, you can access all the modules at your leisure, and there’s no subscription to maintain the course. You can also download additional resources plus all the additional modules like templates for your ads.
Besides the standard store building guide, you also have a detailed guide on how to profit from Google Ads, which is interesting since it’s often neglected in favor of Facebook. There are over 16 hours spread amongst the videos, explaining to both beginners and advanced entrepreneurs how they can get more costumers.
Target audience
The course is a great tool for both beginner and intermediate entrepreneurs in eCommerce. The lessons are great, and they’ll help you out a lot when marketing your business. As such, it’s also filled with good insight and tips that more advanced marketers might not have considered.
Google Ads is an amazing source for getting data and traffic, and that’s why it’s odd how most courses just skip right past it. That’s a good selling point for this course.
eCom PPC is also a very good guide to go from beginner to advanced level. It sports enough depth and recommended tools to make the entire process quick and mostly effortless. The Facebook group also helps out a lot.
The only problem with this course is the price. Sure, it’s not as expensive as most courses, so it’s still not as strong of a downside, but you have to keep in mind that you also have to pay for your marketing and any additional tools you might need.
According to the author, you’ll have to invest over $300 (up to $500) before your business starts making any profits, and if you add the price of the course, you’ll quickly approach the $1,000 mark just to start.
As such, the course is mostly for people who can afford that investment size and aren’t afraid of not seeing the results they expected.
What do you get with this course?
Module 1
The first module is about building your store. Right off the bat, it also gives you some insight on what tools are best for using with Google Ads.
He then goes on into what it takes to be successful with eCommerce given the business’ popularity and competition. He then tells you how to find a niche and products that work well with Google Ads, and he gives you a recommended apps checklist for starting out.
Module 2
The second module is all about giving you the foundations of Google Ads. You learn how to create your account and manage its interface.
The videos also go into why Google Ads is the best strategy, setting it up, and tips on using bidding strategies. It also offers to guide you through the steps to track codes and synchronize your account if you have little technical knowledge.
Module 3
The 3rd module will teach you about the strategies you can use with Google Ads, particularly with Google Shopping.
You’ll receive instructions for both launching and testing your products and creating an outstanding Shopping Feed. It offers a 90-minute class about selecting products and how to build their marketing campaigns.
M#odule 4
The 4th module is one of the shorter ones. It’s mostly Marco explaining his personal “keyword value” system. It’s an approach he uses to target keywords without much competition that still satisfy specific needs from your potential customers.
Module 5
This reaches out to YouTube briefly to explain how you can set up and run a successful campaign on the platform. It goes into adapting your strategy depending on your target audience, and what are the best channels for promoting your product.
I personally liked this module a lot since there aren’t a lot of courses that teach you how you can use YouTube Ads.
Module 6
The last module is about optimizing your marketing campaign. He goes back to Google Ads once again, and he then goes through the steps to scaling your successful campaigns and how to know when you should cut them off.
The videos go over some interesting methods, like segmenting your funnels and re-marketing, that you can apply to your ads campaigns when they’re already on their way.
Course Information
eCom PPC Academy has a lot of straight-to-the-point content about managing and growing your business with Google Ads as your marketing strategy. While having 25 videos places it on the shorter side of the course length spectrum, several of the videos last for at least 90 minutes, and with over 16 hours in length, it’s definitely not one of the shortest courses.
The content provided is also accurate, and the videos can be very extensive. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have flaws.
Some modules are very limited content-wise. There are several concepts and practices that newer entrepreneurs won’t understand unless explained. Many of these elements are skipped by the videos, Marco assuming the student already knows them, so it can get very confusing for unexperienced students.
While it provides excellent insight and a very good module about YouTube Ads, its focus on Google Ads is still a problem since there are several additional strategies. Facebook is the leading marketing approach for eCommerce businesses, and there’s also Instagram, emailing, Pinterest, and a lot more.
No matter how great Google can be, you need as much knowledge as you can get. Even when going into YouTube, it focuses on paid advertising. Like with Pinterest and the lack of SEO, you’re not getting any free marketing strategies here.
Final Verdict
eCom PPC Academy is a great course for people with a running business who wish to learn the in’s and out’s of Google Ads. There’s a lot of good information for both newcomers and intermediate individuals, and there aren’t many courses rivaling its Google Ads content.
There’s also the advanced tricks for marketing your store and the rare YouTube Ads section you won’t find in many other courses.
If you meet that criteria and can afford its price, I’d say you could give it a try.
However, it’s far from being a perfect course.
Some of the videos provide inappropriate information for beginners, so it’s hard to recommend it to newcomers with zero knowledge on the business. Besides, the price is also high for people just getting familiarized with the industry.
However, with the lack of other strategies, I can’t fully recommend it to advanced entrepreneurs either since they’ll likely be looking for a full course to expand their business.
If you can afford its price and the risk that comes with large investments, and you’re interested in an in-depth Google Ads course, then this might be the course for you. Otherwise, you can find better products.
Best Alternative
eCom Elites is a course that you can buy for merely $197 ($297 its premium package). It also provides a lot of insight into Google Ads, while still offering excellent and in-depth content on other approaches like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and even chat bots.
It’s definitely the best option in my opinion, and you still have plenty of money left for your marketing needs.
I hope you found this review useful and if you have any questions, please comment down below. I’ll be more than happy to assist you.
Once again, thanks for reading my eCom PPC Academy Review and I wish you the best of luck.

How To Use A Household Ledger To Give Your Financial Life A Fresh Start This Year
I came across the idea of a household ledger (a kakeibo, 家計簿) during a trip to Japan a few years ago, even though at the time I didn’t quite realize what they were. They’re often found in stationery stores and are essentially an inexpensive way (costing around $6) for Japanese women to keep track of their finances, bills and outgoings/incomings.
Originally they were designed for housewives, traditional keepers of the Japanese household, and became a thing. Now you can get kakeibo in dozens of designs from cats to Moomins. Amazon Japan has pages of them up for sale at year’s end and many have plastic pockets for a pen or receipts. Most keep the same design: sections for pay, bills, and then the ability to input things you buy (on a weekly basis), be it an onigiri from FamilyMart or the cost of the internet bill. Recently, they’ve been imported into English language and become a thing. There are loads of videos on YouTube showing “Budget Plan With Me”s and many households keep what the US terms “budget books,” often oversized binders which live at home but contain every aspect of their owner’s financial lives.
I started using a somewhat overpriced kakeibo that had just been released (essentially a blank journal designed for finances in the Japanese style, with goals and motivational quotes, I’ve linked to it so you can see the inside and get a better idea of the basic layout). Then I realized it would be more efficient and cheaper to just make my own when that one ran out. So, to make yourself a kakeibo, you just need a pen, a ruler, a notebook of your choosing, some time and a couple of coffees as a motivational bonus.
I used it, at first, to help me get some personal debt down. But I found the idea of categories of spending fascinating. You see, aside from bills and big expenses, the idea of a kakeibo is that it works around categories, not each individual expenditure. What they are depends on you but I use ones like ‘groceries’, my guide dog (who has a carrot obsession) to the obscenely terrible ‘coffee/drinks out’. Each week you add or remove categories until you’ve refined what you use, personally. At the end of the week is a tally where you can add up how much you’ve spend in each category and across the board to get a better idea at where your money is going (be it spending in cash, purchases on Amazon or carrots).
Each month starts with a page where you write out your incomings (pay, benefits, side-hustle cash) and your bills. Most of the latter, in my case are paid by Direct Debit (the UK version of automatic payments) on the first of the month but there’s something almost calming about having a single page spread with dates, names and precise amounts. Especially if you then go over the paid expenses with a nice highlighter.
All the details are there and if something changes, like the cost of your phone bill, it’s very easy to change. I also add in monthly non-utility subscriptions like Spotify, Patreon, YouTube and Netflix, all of which go out automatically but take their own chunk out of my monthly incomings. Ouch but totally worth it for keeping me sane.
The original book I using was size A5 and felt huge. Now in my second year, I wanted something smaller but still portable and something which was uniquely me. My kakeibo has plenty of numbers in but no personal information, aside from my email address in case of misplacement. Just figures and dates. Oh, and it’s one of the core items in my Every Day Carry.
I bought myself a tall slim Hobonichi Weeks Mega made using very thin but forgiving Tomoe River paper from Amazon Japan, split into a diary at the front and a good 200 blank pages at the back. The paper thickness means it doesn’t take up a lot of room but can also go anywhere with me.
I use the diary section to record notes about expenses, things I need to do (like double check a payment for the following month or note when my shopping will be delivered and the cut off for editing the order). I note my balances each day (from my current accounts to my credit card balances). I note “no spend days”(which I’m trying to do more of) and keep lists in the back like my financial goals for the next few years.
There are “spreads” (a Bullet Journaling term referring to a double page spread) where I work through the cost of a holiday to Dublin I’m planning, how much that PlayStation 4 Pro I’ve been coveting for a year and a half will actually cost me. There’s also a list of important items I need to buy in the next few months and, of course, the weekly spreads which let me track my spending. Yes, it involves a little set up but this is easily done with that first Monday morning coffee.
I keep my kakeibo in a cover which allows me to add in a pen, a Liquid Paper pen for those annoying mistakes, a ruler and a scratch paper notebook from Muji where I can do calculations. This also comes in handy when I note down the standard cost of coffee in my favourite coffee shop chains (which really helps when you realise you drank one coffee at Costa, another in Starbucks and a third at the pub with brunch but didn’t think to get receipts).
I keep a pencil case with me which allows for color-coding payments, highlighting when my income has been paid, as well as noting down when subscriptions are due or when I get paid from my side-hustle. I have three bookmarks: one marks my week in the diary portion, the second my weekly spread and the final one whatever spread I’m working on (right now it’s a year end review).
The most important thing it’s taught me is the accountability of purchases and the peace which comes from having everything you need to hand. I plan a month ahead and am able to know how much I need for all my bills going out on January 2nd. I know exactly when I’m being paid and when those big expenses, like services charges, will be due thanks to a dedicated household expenses single spread which goes through each month of the year and lets me be able to prep for expenses a whole year in advance, from my MedicAlert subscription through to household contents insurance.
But it’s also a place I can dream, including plans for holidays and savings. One of my big aims for 2019 is to be able to get a nice £5k “cushion”/emergency fund in place for…well, emergencies. Thanks to my spread on my plans, to do that I know I need to put £100 away each week to reach my desired amount by year’s end. That’s a nice thing for aim for and I’ll probably have to find a savings tracker spread, blocks to color in or something.
I love the portability and, at the end of the year, when I do my review, I’m curious to see where I spent money for the last two month of use. I’m pretty sure that it will also help me, especially as, right at the front of I have the maxim of a British finances expert reminding me: Do I need it? Can I afford it? Will I use it? Is it worth it? Just asking myself those questions has already saved me from several impulse/Bipolar-inspired stationery binges.
I tried noting every expense in a spreadsheet, but I’ve found the old schoolness of pen and paper to be more useful and cathartic. I write things down to remember them (which reminds me to renew my Field Notes subscription…) and, surprisingly, I do. But I also have the space to plot, to focus on a more positive financial future and then try to bring it into being. Okay, there might be little deviations, but each week is a new one — and that mentality, plus that Monday morning setup time, is totally making the difference.
With the new year upon us, I really do recommend considering making your own kakeibo. If only for the amount of financial-related anxiety it helps to do away with. It’s not about fancy spreads, it’s about numbers and dates, about looking ahead and writing down those things you’d otherwise forget like car payments or an insurance renewal. Planning, writing down important payment dates and then having it with you, is a part of financial responsibility that no one tells you about but is just as important, in my humble opinion, as actually being able to pay for these things. I hope it helps you as much as it has me and, the most important thing, it doesn’t have to be something you start on January 1st either. Remember: every week is a fresh start.

Patreon ups its revenue cut, but grandfathers in old creators
New Post has been published on http://www.readersforum.tk/patreon-ups-its-revenue-cut-but-grandfathers-in-old-creators/
Patreon ups its revenue cut, but grandfathers in old creators
Patreon couldn’t survive charging all creators just a 5 percent rake on the monthly subscriptions they earn from fans while building commerce tools like CRMs and merchandise to try to stay ahead of Twitch, YouTube and Google. But it also didn’t want to screw all its loyal early creators.
So today, Patreon is overhauling its pricing. Any creator can still get a 5 percent rate, but just for a Lite version without bonus tools or different fan tiers. All of Patreon’s extra features will now be in the Pro plan, with an 8 percent rate, but with existing creators grandfathered in at 5 percent. And the new Premium enterprise plan for 12 percent (9 percent for existing creators) will offer full-service merchandise sales, multi-user team accounts and dedicated customer support.
If you want the lower grandfathered rates, you’ll need to join Patreon in the next few weeks before the new rates go into effect in early May.
“With this change, Patreon is a long-term independent company that doesn’t need anyone else. That’s the move we’re making here,” says Patreon’s SVP of Product, Wyatt Jenkins. More sustainable pricing means creators won’t have to fear Patreon selling out in desperation to someone like Facebook that might neglect or exploit them.
Instead, Patreon CEO Jack Conte tells me he wants to balance powerful features with right-sized pricing for different creator types to become the platform-agnostic home for subscription patronage when tech giants are each trying to build their own. “To have a different membership for each distribution platform, that’s not going to work. You need a single place for the bottom of your distribution funnel,” Conte explains.
Balancing rates and resources
Patreon now has 3 million fans paying 100,000 creators more than half a billion dollars per year, and it will cross $1 billion in payouts in 2019 after six years in business. But Patreon was starving on its 5 percent rate, which some venture capitalists tell me is why they passed on its funding rounds totaling $105 million led by Thrive Capital and Index. Now it might make enough to keep the lights on, retain ownership and maybe even earn a profit one day.
Jenkins tells me Patreon spent a year talking to more than 1,000 creators to figure out how to re-price its offering. “People don’t like change. But I think in terms of change, we’re going to be able to invest in the different products in different ways. We can put a lot of horsepower into membership,” he explains. The company didn’t want to screw up like when it changed its payment processing rates a year ago, leading to creator backlash and some exodus. “We unilaterally did something that impacted creators’ patrons. That was the real landmine we stepped on.”
Patreon’s new rates
What Patreon discovered was some creators, especially individuals and hobbyists, didn’t care for bells and whistles. They wanted cheap and easy recurring payments so they can focus on their art, so Patreon made the 5 percent Lite plan that strips out the extra features but keeps the old rate.
More serious videographers, illustrators, comedians and pundits wanted to offer different price tiers for different levels of exclusive content. They need analytics, special offers, integrations with other productivity and commerce apps and priority customer support when things break. That’s what creators will get for 8 percent, unless they’re grandfathered in at 5 percent.
But Patreon also found there were whole media organizations with 50 employees built atop its patronage platform. They needed to be able to share accounts and get immediate support when necessary. Meanwhile, tons of creators see merchandise as a powerful way to lure in fans who want signed photos, stickers and other swag each month. “Eighty-five percent of our creators tell us we need merchandise. ‘We spend our days in the post office licking stamps. You can get great negotiation leverage since you have scale, so why aren’t you helping us with this?’ We can’t build that on 5 percent,” Jenkins tells me. They’ll all pay the 12 percent Premium plan price unless grandfathered in at 9 percent. Patreon will, in return, process, pack and ship all their merchandise.
Patreon is also changing its payment processing fees to make sure it doesn’t overpenalize smaller contributions, like creators’ popular $1 per month tiers. Now all transactions over $3 incur a 2.9 percent plus $0.30 fee similar to Stripe’s industry standard, while microtransactions under $3 cost 5 percent plus $0.10. Existing creators get the old rates, and people paying via PayPal from outside the U.S. get hit with an extra 1 percent fee.
The battle for fan subscriptions
Surprisingly, one of Patreon’s most popular creators told me they actually felt bad about being grandfathered in at a lower price, because why should they get special treatment compared to other artists who just might not be as tech savvy. That said, they weren’t going to voluntarily pay a higher rate. “I guess I’m not surprised,” Conte responds. “I’ve found that creators are really humble and selfless, always thinking about other people. I can imagine them saying ‘What about these people? Why am I paying less than them?”
If Patreon can power through the rate change without breaking momentum, it could have a bright future. It’s started a patronage trend, but leaked documents show Facebook plans to charge creators up to 30 percent like YouTube already does, and Twitch charges an astronomical 50 percent. But with far more restrictions on content and far more distrust accrued after years of forsaking creators and tense negotiations, Patreon’s neutral platform with the cheapest rate could remain the fan subscription leader at a time when ad revenue shares are proving inadequate to support turning one’s passion into their profession.
Patreon co-founder and CEO Jack Conte
When TechCrunch broke the news that Facebook planned to charge up to 30 percent, Conte said, “Honestly, it was relieving but really disappointing in some way. I think competition is good. I hope there are many membership products. I hope they’re successful and [give creators a choice]. Right now, it’s not a choice. Facebook’s product is not usable. The folks that have used Facebook’s product have turned it off. From a competitor standpoint, it confirmed my thought that Facebook doesn’t understand creators.”
That’s also why he hopes that one day the tech giants might just integrate Patreon rather than compete, and they could each get a cut of subscription revenue.
Looking forward, he says the toughest challenge for Patreon will be building three different products for three distinct types of creators without the infinite wallets of its rivals. “I think Patreon will be raising for a long time,” Conte says. That will fund Patreon’s plans for eventual international operations, where 40 percent of patrons and 75 percent of creators live. Right now Patreon is offered only in English and supports U.S. dollars. But if it can spin up local languages, currencies and payment processors, Patreon could be where creators around the world go to share with their biggest fans.

Inside ‘Fin,’ the elite human/AI assistant

Inside ‘Fin,’ the elite human/AI assistant
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“I have FOMO for the future”, says Sam Lessin. That’s why his startup, Fin, is working backwards from a far-off tech utopia. One day, computers with some human help will answer our every beck and call. Today, Lessin is teaming them up. Every day, Fin gets smarter.
For $1 a minute, 24/7, Fin gets your digital chores done. Message, email or speak a request and a real person will snap into action, augmented by a machine intelligence toolkit built from all the tasks Fin’s tackled to date. Sure, it handles research, scheduling, commerce and customer support calls. But it also learns your habits, negotiates for you, and conquers complex jobs like creating a website.
Now after two years and funding from top investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Fin is opening up to more customers and press. “We’ve really intentionally talked to no one,” says Lessin, a former Facebook VP who sold it his file sharing startup Drop.io.
That’s a vastly different approach than most boisterous AI startups have taken. “There’s been this crazy hype cycle,” Lessin tells me. “‘Everything’s a bot. Bots are awesome. Everything’s an assistant.’ All these things fucking suck.”
Converting money into time
Fin was determined not to suck, even if that meant staying quiet. Lessin and co-founder Andrew Kortina have tinkered and tested Fin since mid-2015. “I had done Venmo,” Kortina says, downplaying his co-founder role and its sale to PayPal, “and was then doing nothing. I heard Sam was also doing nothing and that piqued my interest, as he’s an old friend.”
Brainstorming led them to the thesis that “the internet is broken as an information machine,” Kortina tells me. They saw a greater destiny than entertainment, distraction and big enterprise. So in Fin’s first incarnation, the duo swapped neglected memos and to-do lists, and tried to find what they could get done for each other. Plenty had been falling through the cracks.
“I’m okay about doing menial things for colleagues but I’ll just let all that stuff in my own life slip,” Kortina admits. “I wouldn’t go to the dentist for years. I didn’t have health insurance after college for 10 years. My credit score was terrible because I had some bill I wouldn’t figure out how to pay.”
Most people have similarly boring tasks they loathe spending time dealing with. You could call the cable company to fight a price hike or research restaurants and hunt for a reservation. So could Fin. And thanks to Uber we’ve grown accustomed to being able to trade money for that time back, sidestepping slow public transportation or looking for parking when we’re in a rush.
Fin co-founders Sam Lessin (left) and Andrew Kortina (right) in front of the flag of Finland
While it’s easy to imagine Fin as merely a first-world luxury for the lazy, and it’s great at that, it’s also a productivity tool that can let people achieve more of what only they can do. Kortina talks about Fin as a way to “instantly offload” chores.
Even if you could power through a task faster than Fin could second-hand and keep the dollars, “It’s not just the cost of doing that thing yourself. It’s the context switching,” Kortina explains. “It’s so hard for me to get into a really good state of concentration and flow and creativity, and when I get into that state I don’t want to be interrupted.”
Reverse-engineering science fiction
Fin’s far from the only personal assistant startup trying to save you time, but many of the others fail due to hubris, relying too heavily on their own code as the answer to every question. “The mistake is looking at machine learning and thinking we’re so close to this general intelligence,” Lessin insists. Replacing humans outright isn’t the answer. “The future is people helping people.”
Competitors that can go AI-only are restricted to narrow sets of tasks, like x.ai for meeting scheduling. Traditional and virtual assistant services can be inefficient. Facebook’s M assistant also uses a combo of humans and AI but is free and hasn’t been opened up to the public.
One service similar to Fin called GoButler was forced to pivot to solely automated assistance, and eventually sold as scrap to Amazon. Fin’s most remaining direct competitor is Magic. It’s cheaper at $0.59 per minute but only takes requests via text message. Lessin moonlights as a partner for Slow Ventures, which participated in Magic’s $12 million 2015 Series A, which raises some concerns about conflicts of interest he wouldn’t comment on. [Update: More examples of competitors were added to this paragraph.]
But wait, isn’t AI supposed to take everyone’s jobs? Lessin envisions a new industrial revolution instead. He cites cobblers making a few shoes while waiting around the shop for customers, struggling to match fluctuating demand. But with steam and electricity “you had a new source of power. It’s not like power stopped work. You had humans doing what they were good at, tech doing what tech was good at, and you had way more shoes.”

With Fin, though, Lessin’s vision involves a team of round-the-clock operators equipped with AI and processes for similar tasks can snap into action even after-hours, rather than a full-time dedicated assistant being “paid for showing up being on YouTube” and then going off the job, Lessin says. Even if it’s expensive at $1 per effective minute of work, Fin is exceedingly convenient, and you don’t pay for down time.
To use Fin, you just pop open its minimalist black-and-white desktop site or iOS app, then type, speak or upload a photo of your request. If you’re unsure what you could ask for, there’s an anonymized feed of real examples from other users to spark your imagination.
“We can execute any task that doesn’t require hands in your city,” says Lessin, noting how hard it is for some startups to get local scale and capacity nailed down. “I have incredible respect for Instacart.” He also points out that “there are types of specialized knowledge we can’t currently do for you. Ask us some PhD physics problem and it will either take a long time or we won’t do it.”
Usually, though, you get messaged back almost immediately by a Fin human who collects any necessary details and gets started. I felt an instantaneous sense of relief upon outsourcing my responsibilities. Along the way, your task gets updated with progress and requests for secondary decisions. When possible, it just pulls things like addresses and airplane seat preferences from your onboarding survey, and payment information or online passwords from the app’s Vault. You get a detailed statement of exactly how Fin used your time and how much you owe.
“Our job is to mix the best tool or person for the job in a way to deliver an experience that’s better than you can get from working with a single isolated individual, or a piece of pure software,” Kortina declares.
That’s where the name “Fin” comes in. “Like ‘the end’ in French films,” Lessin reveals. “This is the interface and the ways things will work in 50 or 100 years.” While technology will get more and more adept at a wider range of tasks, he imagines that in the end, it will still be humans sending requests to computer-human teams.
The unevenly distributed future
The hardest part of using Fin is getting over the mental hurdle of relinquishing control while paying for what you could do yourself.
“I think that’s the real competitor,” says Lessin. Even factoring in what your time’s worth and the context switching overhead, Fin can produce some serious sticker shock. That’s accentuated by our idealized predictions that underestimate the time required to do things. “How long does it take to book movie tickets?” Lessin jokes. “30 seconds? No!”
Fin’s team
I was charged $80 to deal with having a mis-shipped iPhone X refunded and a new one bought and sent. While I was thankful not to have to deal with customer support, it was some pricey peace of mind. Getting a holiday restaurant reservation originally cost me $150, which is completely absurd even if it took several loops to find the right time and get me to sign a credit card payment form for the prix fixe dinner.
Luckily, I was refunded that $150 after submitting a complaint through the app, which is easy to do through Fin’s thumbs up/down buttons on each request. “Most really heavy users escalate / ask about something every month or two,” Lessin admits. Fin uses internal benchmarking tools to track if certain assistants take too long on a task or routinely do too much research in a category. Still, Fin sometimes goes overboard so users shouldn’t be shy about contesting any charges that seem ridiculous. You can sign-up through this link for TechCrunch readers to get a discount on your first tasks.
Fin initially launched in beta with a $120 per month subscription fee. But Kortina gripes that “all we were learning is how people could arbitrage Fin to do way more than $120 worth of service.” He seems to be having bad acid flashbacks to before Venmo started charging a 3 percent credit card fee in 2012, when people would just send money back and forth to hit minimum spending limit or earn points while Venmo ate the fees.
youtube
With the switch to per-minute pricing, “We’ve set ourselves up for the long haul by really focusing on unit economics,” says Lessin, in contrast to many on-demand startups. That surely delights Fin’s investors John Doerr at KPCB, Sameer Gandhi at Accel, and Saar Gur at CRV. While Lessin won’t reveal exactly how much Fin has raised, he calls them “good capital partners,” noting the startup has enough cash to “be able to do this for a long time.” Fin now has 20 employees on the technical side, while it’s climbing toward 100 when you include its full-time operators.
Not subsidizing the service is a healthy choice for Fin, but that means “Unfortunately it’s not at a price point that everyone on Earth can afford.” Whether through economies of scale, AI advancement, or human training, Fin may need to bring the price down if it wants widespread adoption. “The future is already here” sci-fi author William Gibson once said, “it’s just not very evenly distributed.”
The premium price tag begets premium service that makes Siri and her cohorts feel like mere calculators in comparison. “The message is you should demand a lot more out of assistant services than cooking timers and Google search lookups,” Lessin concludes. In an era when technology is designed to soak up the maximum amount of your time, Fin lets you buy it back. We’ll each have to decide how much it’s worth.

INTERVIEW // PAIGE BACKSTAGE
Tumblr media
Meet Toronto-based music blogger and YouTuber Paige Williams, a.k.a. Paige Backstage. With over 11,000 followers on her social media pages, Paige is breaking barriers in the online music world and is becoming an exciting woman to watch in the industry. She’s taking the industry into her own hands and creating an incredible online space where people can come together to love and share the music that means the most to them. We sat down with Paige to discuss her experiences in the music industry, her inspirations, and what she’s most excited about for the upcoming year.
Aspects Magazine: What inspired you to start your blog?
Paige Williams: I spent a few years working at the biggest record label in Canada, so I got an opportunity to see the music industry on a pretty large scale. One of the things that bothered me a lot was that I felt like a lot of smaller bands weren’t getting the attention they deserved. There were all these artists that signed on thinking they were going to be supported and then were essentially being forgotten. I wanted to create a space where I could sort of showcase the bands that I thought deserved more attention or just bands that I really enjoyed. I also felt like I didn’t have a voice in such a big company. It was very much like “small fish, big pond” where as if I made my own pond then I’m the only fish. It was something that I’ve always loved doing and I’ve had multiple blogs before, but it’s been really fun and fulfilling in some way.
AM: What inspired you to add a YouTube channel into the mix?
PW: I found there was some stuff that was easier to talk about. It’s easier to have a conversation with people or show something off that maybe doesn’t require a full post. I actually used to have a YouTube channel, so I had already been associated with YouTube and I knew it very well. I actually went to school previously for acting for film and television, so I’m very comfortable with a camera and that was just something that I missed doing. Honestly, all the things I’m doing right now are things that I’ve wanted to be doing for the last ten years but I had to keep shutting them down or I didn’t have the platform or I didn’t have the confidence to do it, so I’ve kind of taken the time now to kind of get back in to everything. YouTube has ended up kind of being my favorite, but I’m trying to focus more on my blog now this month.
Part of the problem is that you want to write blog posts and have that good content, but the attention comes much faster on YouTube. Most of the people on my YouTube don’t even know I have a blog. Attention on YouTube is so much easier because there’s people already there that are fans of YouTube itself, so they’ll find anything on YouTube and they’ll look through different videos whereas if you look on my blog and read a post it’s not going to say “Here’s four other bloggers you might like. Read their posts on similar topics.” I think everybody kind of gets swayed toward YouTube because it’s easier to find your audience. But your blog is your own personal space that you can control. YouTube is having issues lately where they’re not putting videos in subscription boxes and randomly canceling people’s subscriptions to channels. There’s all these weird things happening and you have no control over that because it’s not your platform, whereas your blog is your platform so really we should all be focusing on them more because we actually have control over them. I’m trying to split my time between both this year. That’s my goal for 2017.
AM: You’re participating in Blogmas and Vlogmas this year. What made you decide to do thirty-one days of posting on both of your sites?
PW: Last year I did Blogmas, but it only lasted until December 24th because I lost internet after that. But it was fun doing that because I had just started my blog so my plan was mostly to stockpile content.
I didn’t really focus it on music, though, because at the time I just thought “I’ll do music and everything else.” I didn’t really have a focus for a while, but not long after I realized I should just try to make everything tie in to music. But then I kind of accidentally didn’t post on my blog for, like, four months which wasn’t good. I didn’t realize so much time had passed and then I was like “Oh. My last post was in May. That’s fine.” So I said “You know what, it’s time to just buckle down and get all this stuff going so that in 2017 I have a base to jump off and so that I have music content written and published somewhere.” So I decided to give Blogmas a try again. A lot of people do Vlogmas, too, but I don’t really vlog, so I thought “What if I just make a video every single day?” I didn’t want to neglect my YouTube just because I was doing my blog, so instead I decided to completely overwhelm myself and do everything. Honestly, if I thought it through better, I should have done alternating days - one Blogmas, one Vlogmas - but I didn’t think it through. It’s too late now. [laughs]
AM: Is there something specific you’re looking forward to getting out of Blogmas/Vlogmas?
PW: I’m really excited to see how this helps with all the changes with YouTube right now because so many people are having issues getting people onto their channels. I figure if I’m posting more content I can see how YouTube is doing things and I can kind of test it that way. So far so good. I’m also trying to kind of wean my audience off the vinyl videos because there’s only so many videos I can make without bankrupting myself just buying more records to talk about, but when I post other content they don’t watch it as much or as fervently as they watch my vinyl videos, so I’m trying to show that I have more interests than just my record collection and then I can see what content they would prefer me to add or what they completely don’t care about. I’m willing to adjust my content to what they want, but I also want to talk about some other stuff that I think is cool or important. I’m excited to branch out and I’m excited to get some new viewers in, because I have goals for 2016 that I want to reach by the end of the year.
AM: You’re obviously a huge vinyl collector. Do you have any tips for people who want to start collecting but are maybe worried about the cost or just feel so overwhelmed they don’t really know where to start?
PW: One of the things I think people ask me about is “What are the records that you have to have in your collection” or “What are the records that every vinyl collection needs?” I feel like that comes from this mentality that’s been handed to us by middle-aged men that have made up the vinyl community for so long that act like if you don’t own every Rolling Stones and Beatles record then you’re a fake vinyl collector and you’re garbage. I feel like we need to get over the mentality that you need to have these records or your collection is not real. Your collection is your collection. Why would you spend money on stuff you don’t care about? I don’t own any Rolling Stones records. I’m sure there are a lot of bands whose records I should own that I don’t, but it’s my collection and it shows who I am so I feel like that’s what’s important. Don’t spend money on records you don’t actually want just because you think it’s necessary.
And don’t let people at flea markets trick you in to paying more for your records because you’ll overspend and you’ll regret it forever. I prefer stores anyway. I go to [HMV or major retailers] because I know I can find stuff and I know it’s going to be at the right price. I shop there. I don’t care. And I’ll shop at Urban Outfitters. It’s fine because I find what I want. There’s this mentality that vinyl collecting has to be this hipster thing where you’re digging through somebody’s garbage in a basement and it doesn’t have to be like that. We need to get over the whole superiority complex.
Also, never store your records like pancakes. Stand them up or you’re going to wreck them. That’s my advice. [laughs]
AM: This magazine is all about getting people started in the music industry. How did you get your start? What made you decide this was what you wanted to do and what kind of steps did you take to get there?
PW: I’ve been playing piano since I was three-years-old and I’ve always been super connected to music. It’s been the main part of my life since I was born. I think it was always a given that I was going to do something with music and when I went to school for something else I think my parents were really surprised, but I just didn’t really see how I could make a career out of music. I never really realized there were options out there for me. My mom ended up sitting me down one night and just said “I just don’t really know why you’re going to school for anything other than music.” So I dropped out of school and found another school for entertainment management. I don’t know what they’re like in the States, but in Toronto there’s a whole handful of [specialty schools]. So I went to school for that and there you learn about every part of the industry. You learn about working at labels, about management, being an agent, graphic design, website design. They literally teach you everything. It’s nine months of school and a three-month internship. When it was time for me to get an internship, I contacted the biggest labels in the country and actually interviewed with and got internships at both and then I had to pick.
What I learned from working [at the label] is that a lot of interns come in and kind of do the bare minimum just because they want it on their resume, but you have to put in work. Make yourself indispensable so they can’t imagine life after your internship is done. They extended my internship twice because they said, “We can’t hire right now, but we don’t want you to leave.” They just kept extending my internship until a spot opened up and then they hired me right away. You just have to make sure that you’re putting in work and that you’re not just taking advantage of the situation. You have to really do what you can to make sure you give yourself the opportunities you deserve. And do not undervalue yourself, because I did that a lot and spent way too many hours at the office and didn’t get paid for things that I should have gotten paid for. I thought, “If I don’t do this for free or if I don’t put in ten extra hours today then they’ll find somebody else who will.” That’s not necessarily true. You should definitely stick to your guns. The industry can be hard to get into, but if you look for opportunities you’ll find them. Everybody’s looking for people who are willing to come in and help and it’s always a good way to get your foot in the door for something more long-term or paid.
AM: Obviously you’ve done a lot since you started in the industry. Is there any memorable project or moment, whether it was with your work or on your own?
PW: When I worked at the label, I was just an assistant so I wasn’t actually supposed to have my own projects. I was just supposed to help everybody else do menial tasks so they could focus on their projects. But in July of I think 2014, I saw that Halsey had just signed to Astralwerks and Capitol so I ran into my boss’s office and said, “There’s this artist I know of that you guys definitely don’t know yet and she just signed. Can I have this project?” and he was like, “She signed an hour ago. Nobody here is doing anything yet.” So I kept coming back to him and saying, “Hey. I really want to do this” and he said, “We’re not doing anything here yet. She doesn’t have music yet. She just got signed.” By the end of the year I said, “If I write out a business proposal on why I should be her marketing manager, will you let me do it?” and he said, “Yes. If you bring me a good enough plan, sure.” I wrote out this whole marketing plan over my Christmas break and brought it back in the new year and my boss said, “Fine. You can have this project.”
Up until that point I was kind of already doing everything anyway. Everybody at the office kept saying, “Nobody cares. She’s just another indie-pop artist. There’s other priorities. You need to calm down. You’re just a fan.” I got that every day of my life there. “You’re just excited. You’re just a fan.” I was like, “I’m an employee just like everybody else. I’m allowed to be excited about music. That’s why we’re all here.” But I kept pitching it and kept trying my best to get it out there. I would sneak it into Spotify playlists and into other stuff and by the end of the year, she was the top-priority artist. I ended up leaving the company a little bit after her album was released, but then this year the album went gold so I got an award! I got [a plaque] and it was the most important moment of my whole life, just being able to see that it went from me being the most annoying person that anybody at this company had ever met to one year later when I could say I was right! So many times people ride-off my music tasted because I like boybands or pop music. But then I could say, “No. This time I was right and now I have a huge plaque to show for it.” That was my big work moment, even though it happened after I left.
There have actually been a lot of things with my blog that were important moments for me. I think probably the most important one was the first time I went to my PO box and had something from one of my followers. Companies will send you stuff sometimes. I don’t get that much from companies, but there are vinyl subscription services that will ask me to review them. But actually having somebody say, “Hey. I saw this record and thought of you so I just sent it to you.” Or people will send me letters. It’s really cool because it feels like you’ve actually connected with or helped somebody. Or sometimes I’ll get these really nice DMs on Instagram that just say, “Hey. I’ve been having a really bad day, but I just watched one of your videos and it helped my anxiety so much.” It just feels good to know that it did something other than just join this massive internet hysteria of people wanting to gain followers. It’s a good feeling.
AM: If you had to pick a top moment of 2016, what would it be?
PW: I think the best part of 2016 was the first time I got a check from YouTube. They only pay out at $100 and the most I’d ever made with a YouTube account before was, like, $2.03. The first time I hit $100 it was like, “Holy smokes. This could actually start into something. It put me into this new mindset and I feel like that was the moment I kind of flipped. Also, I met my boyfriend, Aaron. I feel like maybe I should say that. He may be offended if I don’t. That was a big moment. He’s really good and supportive. He’s pretty great.
AM: Since we’re approaching the end of the year, what do you think were the top three albums of 2016?
PW: Number three is PUP’s “The Dream is Not Over.” Number two is “Down in the Dark” by Safe to Say, and number one is “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it” by The 1975. 100 percent best album.
AM: Any last words to the readers?
PW: Yes. The plural of “vinyl” is “vinyl” or “vinyls.” Everyone needs to get over it because both are grammatically correct as proven by many articles by many people, so stop thinking you’re better than people because you say “vinyl.” [laughs]
