Shifting focus. The beginning of a new year is always a wonderful opportunity to shift focus. Even though I do not believe in new year's resolutions, because change needs to be done when necessary (which is rarely just once a year), I do always have a special feeling about the beginning of January. The year feels like the untouched pages of history yet to be written and something about that excited me. Quickly we will move towards brighter days and soon enough nights will start to fade and make way for brighter, longer days again. I have lately been very inactive on social media, because I felt the strong need to focus on other things in life, but with the light, energy is returning and so is my creativity and desire to share the beauty around me. I have yet to go out and photograph in the deep snow that the recent snowstorm has brought us and for that I need to find a way to move in the hip-deep snow, but these are problems for another day. And just like that we're back to days spent around the house and daily walks. I'd just started to get into a rhythm of classes and coffee dates when we went into lockdown and now it feels a lot like those first few weeks after R was born. . I'm trying to embrace this new simpler life. We're lucky to have a garden where we can enjoy the spring sunshine and the good weather has meant we can take long walks every day. I'm also appreciating the things we have - less consumerism is always good. . Everything feels uncertain at the moment but I'm trying to embrace the positives. Getting into that Friday feeling! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm spending today doing all my favourite things. Painting and doing calligraphy for a beautiful upcoming styled shoot. One of my rules that I've set for myself is to try to keep some time free from client work on Friday afternoons. Mornings have become dark now and I am rarely at home to see them. When I go up for work it's still dark and as it happens the weekends lately have been cloudy and gloomy but without this beautiful fog. Since the temperatures have dropped this week, ice has started to cover the lake quicker than I thought and even the river is carrying big pieces of ice, that will soon get stuck in eachother and cover the river in ice as well. Each winter I am amazed at the thought that it will take at least 5, if not 6 months until I see free water again on the lake, since it usually takes until at least April for waterbodies to get freed from the ice covering them. Lately we have had an incredible increase in northern light activities and each and every time we had a thick layer of clouds covering the sky. It has been difficult lately to cope with the darkness, when days are shrinking down to just a few hours and the sun hardly rises higher than maybe a quarter of the sky. We have had so much cloudy weather and it hardly got bright during the day, while we haven't either been rewarded with some stars at night, due to the same thick layer of clouds. I absolutely love living in the north, but when the weather is as rainy as it has been recently, it is difficult to deal with the darkness. Autumn so far has been exceptionally warm as well, so frosty days have been a rare sight and snow hasn't come yet, though the forecast predicted some to come later this week. The beauty this fall is extraordinary and the last few days especially. When I took these photos the water was still lower, but now after some rain the levels in the lake and river have risen and have flooded the ground around the tree I was standing under. Today a thin layer of ice covered the majority of the lake. Days are turning colder and even though we still have plus degrees during the days, the last few days frost stayed on the ground in shady and North facing spaces in our garden. We had a wonderful weekend, helping a friend move and spending today in the garden, raking leaves and changing tyres on our cars. I love this cozy time of the year, and even though it saddens me to have less daylight to spend in the garden, I can't help but look forward to the dark and cozy winter months. Last year, during a few weeks from mid December to the beginning of January, the sun didn't reach our house, as the hills around the valley were casting such big shadows in the sun's shallow course. I wonder what this second winter in the valley will be and am already looking forward to next year's gardening season.
