This lamp has a story behind it. It is more than fifty years old as I have known it. So may be it is older. It is what we call down here in South India Nachiar Vilakku. They normally come in pairs. Almost every household has at least one. This pair has seen three households including mine. They have borne witness to the ups and downs of all three. While they have been lit in times of birth, celebrations, illness and death they have more importantly been lit for courage and wisdom to see them through all the stages with equanimity. They have seen souls come before them and pass on through them. They carry the weight of human expectations, aspirations, fear, sadness, joy and ecstasy of three generations that I know of. The soft glow has not diminished one bit and continues to inspire and instill confidence in my household.
