Finally finished Moominpappa’s Memoirs! Here are some more cute moments:

Joxter meets Mymble and almost immediately moves in with her. (Or, at the very least, he moves into the tree in her front yard.) This man was a simp from day 1.

Awwwww Snufkin getting jealous over the idea that his dad liked Mymble more than him. He is very easily mollified, however. And yet another mention of Joxter being cat-like!

Mymble had more children during the time Joxter has been living in her apple tree, so she is either seeing other men while dating Joxter, has been pregnant since meeting him, or Snufkin is not the only half-mymble, half-mumrik child these two have brought into this world. Is Snufkin one of the children mentioned here? Or does he come in later?

I know this is probably not what is happening, but I like to imagine that the two little kids there in the lower right-hand corner are, in fact, baby Little My and Snufkin.

Sniff having a very understandable reaction to Moominpappa forgetting about his mother’s existence until it became relevant to his story.

Awww, Snufkin learning about his mom. It didn’t take him long to put 2 and 2 together. Also interesting that he specifically mentions Little My, but not Mymble Jr, or any of his other numerous siblings. He hasn’t even met Little My yet and she’s already his favorite.

And I love how the book consistently reminds the audience how round Mymble is.

In order to appease Sniff and Snufkin, who have spent this entire book getting only crumbs of information about the parents they didn’t even know they had, the book very abruptly decides to manifest their parents into existence right outside the front door. And just as Moominpapp has finished his memoir, too. What a very lucky coincidence!

I will, however, overlook this absurd plot twist, because, like, look.

Look how cute they all are. Sniff and Snufkin are so happy to be reunited with their parents! (And in Snufkin’s case, several of his siblings, too.)

And that is where the book ends.

There is, of course, no explanation for how Sniff and Snufkin got separated from their parents, nor how Moominpappa even figured out that these two orphaned children that his wife just sort of adopted out of no where were related to his friends. Or, for that matter, why he didn’t ever say anything sooner…

But… oh well. I suppose this book is supposed to be silly and not make much sense.

So I've watched up to episode 11 of the 90s anime, and I've got headcanons on how mymbles and mumriks work. Ik my sketches aren't the best but done is better than perfect as they say.

Starting with the 3 named Mymble characters:

From my understanding, Mymble Jr travels around a bit, and we all know Little My's pretty rugged, so naturally they both probably get quite a bit of sun and as such a lot of freckles. (Okay, mostly it's just bc they both look really cute w/ them.)

Mymble Jr is one of the more "human-looking" characters, reflecting her timidity and contrasting her sister's wild nature.

Little My has dimples, and I'm a bit torn between whether I want Mymblemamma to have them too or just smile lines (not like I'd be able to differentiate the 2 in my style). Either way, I really think Mymblemamma's bright smile deserves to be emphasized. Considering the images I've seen, I bet she's a really smiley person in general.

More general notes on the mymbles:

I'm pretty sure their hair texture means it just sticks straight up when there's no product in it, and keeping it up in those ponytails/buns is probably the most efficient hairstyle when you have ~36 kids.

A "pure mymble" has horns, a rat-like tail, and dark limbs. I was tempted to also give them dark noses like in some illustrations but seeing as how 2/3 of the main Mymbles don't have it and Jansson seems to be pretty inconsistent about this aspect it seemed more in-line with most depictions if they didn't have it.

Even though they canonically look pretty copy-paste, you can't expect me to believe Mymblemamma had that many kids with just her one ex-husband. And even in general I'd expect there to be little differences here and there, explaining by Mymble Jr doesn't have dark hands or why Little My doesn't have a tail.

Next up is my headcanons for mumriks/the Joxter (since he's the only reference we have for a "pure mumrik")

Pointy ears and a tail. I know neither of those are canon but you can't just make a guy look and act like a cat and only let him have that weird nose shading. That said I'm not sold on the fluffy tails or big animal ears, I think they still mostly look human even though they're covered in fuzz.

I tried to make sense of the 3 different colors on this guy's face in some adaptations, and what I've come up with is that they have something like wolf countershading, where their underbellies are pale and their spinal ridge is dark and there's a medium color in between.

Not sure whether I want them to actually have eyebrows or just have those be a type of marking. Looks kinda weird when I personally don't give characters eyebrows.

Last is Our Boy Snufkin:

I am a Snufkin With Horns truther. There is no way he's got 2 vaguely animalistic looking parents and he looks like Just Some Guy. And the way a lot of people draw him makes him just Joxter Lite, and while that is cute I feel like he looks way too much like his mom to completely discount the rest. The horns are probably part of why he wears his hat so often. I mean, even when he's not traveling or the weather is fine he doesn't seem to really like taking it off. Maybe he's insecure, maybe they just get sunburnt easier (I did give Little My freckles on hers after all).

While he doesn't have mumrik-style countershading, his nose and tail are darker.

Similarly, while he doesn't have a light coat like true mumriks, he does grow a lot of body hair and the hair on his head is really dense. His eyebrows are so think they almost look like markings.

Lastly is a little eye chart. I figure that nymbles have the "standard eyes" for human characters, while mumriks have more cat-like eyes and Snufkin has an eye shape somewhere in between.

What’s up with the humans in Moominvalley?? (2019) Like are they actually human, or just humanoid? Because I’ve seen people draw Snufkin and sometimes Little My with a tail. I mean Mymble seems to be a human rabbit mix because of how many children she has (lol) but seriously there’s only like a handful of humans and whenever they pop up I’m just so confused by their presence

Too-Ticky seems to be human and imma just assume so because 😎👍 but Snufkin and Little My aren’t off the hook because I’ve seen that in a different version of Moominvalley Snufkin has a dad?? (Pfft can’t relate) and isn’t his name like The Joxter? And that he has a tail in that version because if so then does Snufkin in that version have a tail too or not? And if not is that because of Mymble?

I’m not sure either way but I will say I do love seeing Snufkin with a tail, I think it’s adorable and tails are under appreciated in my eyes but thank you for reading this and have a lovely day/night/time!!
