Does anyone know of any good feminist analysis/reading of Epic the Musical?

I was listening to it (again) the other day, and I realized that Odysseus’s dynamic with Calypso (and to a lesser extent, his dynamic with Circe) is very much a flip in gender roles. Although Jorge confirms that there wasn’t any SA between Calypso and Odysseus in his version, the undertones are still there.

Heck, even without the SA, the fact that Ody is put in this position of having to repeatedly turn down unwanted romantic advances is an inverse of the dynamic you would usually see in media.

(Not that men are never victims of SA or unwanted romantic advances in real life, because they definitely are. I am talking about how gender roles are traditionally depicted in works of fiction.)

Usually the power dynamics at play in fiction has the man in the position of power over the woman, whereas here Odysseus is very much the one at a disadvantage, being “just a man” with a flurry of gods, goddesses, and monsters constantly getting in his way.

And of course, the entire Circe Saga is, I feel, a very thoughtful reimagining of Circe as a protector of the nymphs, who attempts to take back control over her fight against Odysseus by seducing him.

In Jorge’s version, it seems to be made fairly clear that Circe’s seduction is not actually about desire on Circe’s part (in that she genuinely wants to sleep with Odysseus), but rather a ruse to get him to let his guard down so she can stab him in the back.

She expects him to behave a certain way, and is shocked when he refuses. And it’s Ody’s faithfulness to his wife that earns her sympathy.

(It could be argued that Circe was using magic to seduce Odysseus, as the moly’s power should have started wearing off after Ody defeated Circe in their pokemon-esque style battle, and that Ody actually loved Penelope so much that he was able to break free of the spell.)

(I also find it interesting that Jorge somehow understood that his audience could forgive Odysseus for murdering a literal baby, but would not forgive him if he cheated on his wife.)

Odysseus even calls Penelope “all his power”, so even if she isn’t really a character until Act 2, it helps to really emphasize the relationship he has with her, and how he sees her as an equal.

Ultimate Wife Guy Ody ftw

Not to mention how Odysseus talks (or, well, sings) to Penelope when they finally reunite. He does not assume that she will still love him. In fact, he fears that he has lost her love forever.

But still he confesses everything he’s done, and he gives her the choice.

To paraphrase a youtube comment I saw once: “I am not your kind and gentle husband,” said Odysseus, kindly and gently.

(Side tangent: My fav part of that song is how Ody sings, “I know you’ve been waiting for love”, whereas Penelope sings, “I have been waiting for you”, which is an important distinction. It’s not love in the most general sense that Penelope wants. She wants Odysseus, all of him. His love, yes, but also everything else.)

All of this is to say that I think there’s a lot that could be said about Epic the Musical in terms of a feminist reading. Because obviously, in many ways, the story fits into the trope of “family man does horrific things in order to reunite with his wife and/or children” that we see in a lot of action movies.

But in other ways, it plays with gender roles in a way that is really interesting to think about!
