Rebbe Nachman lost his wife, the mother of his eight children, to tuberculosis in 1807. He remarried shortly after. In the late summer of 1807, Rebbe Nachman himself contracted tuberculosis, a disease that ravaged his body for three years. Knowing his time to leave this world was imminent, he moved to Uman in the spring of 1810.

He gave over his last lesson to hundreds of followers on Rosh HaShanah 1810 and passed away a few weeks later, on 18 Tishrei 5571 (October 16, 1810), at the age of thirty-eight. He was buried in Uman. #BDE

The twelfth of Elul is the birthday of the Catalonian rabbi Nachmanides, who has appeared previously on his yahrzeit and the anniversary of the beginning of his famous debate with a Christian convert. Truly he was one of the great sages of his time and his legacy lives on.

2 Tammuz 5784 (7-8 July 2024)

The second of Tammuz is the yahrzeit of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, who was a disciple and colleague of the founder of the chasidic movement, the Baal Shem Tov, and the grandfather of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, founder of the Breslov Chasidim.

Nachman himself was a descendant of the great sage of Prague, Judah Loew ben Bezalel (the Maharal). He had come to Brody to study with its Talmud scholars when he heard of the Besht and journeyed to meet him. A year before his death, Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka made aliyah to eretz yisroel, living first in Tzfat and then in Tiberias. He died in Tiberias on the 2nd of Tammuz 5525.

Human nature is to draw itself to gloom and depression [...] And every human being is filled with suffering. Therefore, a person has to exercise great effort in forcing [themself] to be happy at all times, and to bring [themself] to joy in any way [they] can — even with silliness [...]

It is right to set aside for oneself some time in the day for feeling remorse and speaking one’s piece in the presence of the Blessed One, as is brought in our works. But the entire [rest] of the day one needs to be happy. For contrition more easily leads to depression [...] For this is the more likely: That contrition will lead to gloom.

One should therefore always be happy, and only at the designated time have a broken heart.
