In samenwerking met De Engelantier is vanaf 30 november Naked City te zien. Naked City is een nieuw kunstwerk waarmee Lloyd Corporation onderzoekt hoe bewoners van Haarlem de openbare ruimte gebruiken om ideeën over vrijheid, democratie en macht te uiten en te bediscussiëren. ONGEZIENE HAARLEMSE STEMMEN EN PLEKKEN Als het kunstmuseum van de stad Haarlem heeft het Frans Hals Museum tijdens de corona lockdowns Lloyd Corporation (Ali Eisa en Sebastian Lloyd Rees) gevraagd een kunstwerk te ontwikkelen dat uiting geeft aan ongeziene stemmen en plekken in Haarlem. Tijdens deze landelijke corona lockdowns verzamelde en documenteerde Lloyd Corporation allerlei mededelingen, advertenties, affiches en stickers uit de straten van Haarlem en omgeving. Voor Naked City hebben de kunstenaars een selectie van deze uitingen als basis gebruikt voor grote, met de hand beschilderde en bedrukte panelen. Op de panelen worden bepaalde teksten en beelden uit de oorspronkelijke publieke uitingen belicht. “We vonden een hartvormig stuk wit karton dat ruw op een afvoerpijp was geplakt met de woorden: Nederland 100% democratie. We zullen nooit weten wie dit bord heeft geplaatst, maar het lokt ons uit om vragen te stellen - zijn we het eens met de verklaring? Is dit hoop voor een mogelijke toekomst? Is het een grap of satire?” aldus Lloyd Corporation. Op het hek bij De Egelantier delen de kunstenaars en het museum het resultaat met alle bewoners en bezoekers van de stad. Met hun kunst verkent Lloyd Corporation hoe gevonden voorwerpen verhalen kunnen vertellen over de sociale, politieke en economische krachten die de maatschappij vormen. FRANS HALS MUSEUM X DE EGELANTIER Dit project is een samenwerking met De Egelantier (onderdeel van ontwikkelcombinatie Lingotto/Hotel Arena, Amsterdam). “Kunst verbindt mensen. Daarom willen we met culturele partners zoals het Frans Hals Museum en 37 PK samenwerken om de stad en buurt nog mooier te maken en de leefbaarheid te bevorderen. #Repost @tbradway ・・・ Just off press from @damiani_books and @icp :the long awaited, remastered facsimile edition of Weegee’s classic book “Naked City”. _ Many thanks to @alexandergalan @pesci.silvia for the opportunity to oversee & produce the republication of this important piece of photo history. Thanks also to ICP’s Christopher George and @mpolhamus for their fantastic collaboration. _ Originally published in 1945 and one of the most important photobooks of all time, this is the first time since the 1956 edition that it has been available in its original form: the way Weegee envisioned it. _ For this edition, we used duotone scans made from Weegee's prints to get closer to the original source material. The new edition includes two commissioned texts by Christopher Bonanos and Christopher George which provide further context about the history and importance of the project. Matt Polhamus used painstaking care to rebuild the jacket (printed in six colors) as well as to match the original design grid and typography. Finally the book was masterfully printed by Faenza Printing in Italy—the finished book is an even more seductive object than I expected, and the experience has definitely been a highlight of my work in publishing. _ From the Steven Kasher Gallery website: "The influence of Weegee and of Naked City are incalculable. Every early morning when the Paddy Wagons came in with arrests to be booked, he would either come out of his window or just go downstairs and take pictures.
