The crazy thing about Society of the Snow is that it so could’ve easily been nominated for the majority of the categories for the regular films (outside of best supporting actress, best actress, original screenplay, and best original song). It’s got the strong main actors, like Enzo, Matias, and Agustin. And it has strong supporting actors like Esteban Bigliardi (Javier) and Esteban Kukuriczka (Fito). The score was amazing and unique. The cinematography was beautiful yet jarring at the same time. And I’m honestly surprised it wasn’t nominated for best sound. J.A. Bayona’s direction gave as much accuracy and respect to the true story as he could. And his direction had power that made us feel like we were there with the survivors as they were fighting for their lives and tackling their morals. As for the adapted screenplay, Numa’s narration, Arturo’s monologue, Javier’s monologue was peak writing
Just sayin.

It’s like Sancho Panza and Don Quixote, or Spock and Captain Kirk. The truth is that they’re the same character, but each a different part of the psychology. And the moment they walk up the mountain, when they see themselves dead, they don’t argue anymore, because there is nothing to argue about. In that moment there are no arguments because you’re one. We shot a beautiful moment in the movie which is when the sole of Nando’s shoe starts to break. Of course, if your shoe breaks, you die. That was the level of dependence they had. And if he dies, what does Roberto do? Does he go, and leave him there? Does he stay with him? So I remember saying, even though we had dialogue, to do it with looks. And there’s one stare from Pardella, who plays Nando, to you in this scene that is pure love.

I just finished reading Nando’s book about his journey in the Andes and I highly recommend it for its honest retelling of those 72 days, and his personal experience dealing with them.
I wanted to share some quotes that truly made me appreciate his and Roberto’s friendship even more. He spares no words to define Roberto’s stubborn, competent and unique personality and that’s how you see they’re truly brothers.
“After seeing how Arturo and Rafael suffered at night as they lay on the floor of the plane (and bellowing at them fiercely to stop their pathetic moaning), Roberto spent hours the next morning fashioning the swinging hammocks that gave those two injured boys some relief from their pain. It was not compassion, exactly, that spurred him to do these things, it was more a sense of duty. He knew his gifts and abilities, and it simply made sense to him to do what he knew no one else could do.”
-
“But more than anything I wanted him with me simply because he was Roberto, the most determined and strong-willed person I had ever known. If there was anyone in our group who could stand up to the Andes through sheer stubbornness alone, Roberto was the one. ”
-
“Roberto was Roberto, on the field or off, and even in the middle of a hard-fought match, he refused to be told what to do.”
-
It reassured me that Roberto was becoming his grumbling self again.
-
“Roberto,” I said, “can you imagine how beautiful this would be if we were not dead men?” I felt his hand wrap around mine. He was the only person who understood the magnitude of what we had done and of what we still had to do. I knew he was as frightened as I was, but I drew strength from our closeness. We were bonded now like brothers. We made each other better men.”
-
“Roberto stood beside me. I saw the fear in his eyes, but I also saw the courage, and I instantly forgave him all the weeks of arrogance and bullheadedness. […]
Roberto nodded. “You and I are friends, Nando,” he said. “We have been through so much. Now let’s go die together.”
-
“He was forcing himself forward now through stubbornness and the sheer power of his will. As I watched him, I knew I had been right in choosing him as my traveling companion.”
-
“But no one has been a better brother to me than Roberto Canessa, my partner in that long trek through the Andes.”
-
“In that moment, neither of us trusted that we had any kind of future, but we did, and more than thirty years later I am proud to say that I am still best friends with Roberto, who has only grown more resourceful, more confident, and, yes, more hardheaded with the passage of time.”
-
I tease him mercilessly about his ego, but I would not have him any other way.

Fin.

nando and roberto about what they mean to each other on a recent interview with Patricia Janot:
Nando: “i would put him on the highest pedestal anyone could be on as a person,as a man, as a friend; if there is any difficult situation on this planet, i would want roberto by my side.”
Roberto: “the other day someone asked me for advice on what to do when you’re lost in life, and i told them to find a leader like Nando and follow them. since he was stronger than me, i knew that if he didn’t sink, i wouldn’t either.”

another sweet thing from this interview, roberto had just finished playing tennis with gustavo
THEY.
"I've never had a better friend than Nando" (Roberto in his book 'I Had to Survive')
Tumblr media
"To this day, more than thirty years after the tragedy, I consider all these men to be my brothers. However, no one's been a better brother to me than Roberto Canessa, my companion on that long journey across the Andes. After several days of travel, as we grew weaker in that desolate territory and our hopes seemed to fade with every step, Roberto pointed to the unmistakable belt he was wearing. I realized it belonged to Panchito.
'I'm wearing the belt that belonged to your best friend - he said - but I'm your best friend now'
At that time, we were not confident that we had any kind of future. But we did and after more than thirty years I am proud to say that Roberto is still my best friend, and he has only become more resourceful, more self-confident and, yes, more stubborn with the passage of time"
(Nando in his book 'Miracle in the Andes')

Mirá. Mirá allá. ¿Ves estos dos picos? Ahí no hay nieve. ¿Lo ves? Ahí está Chile. ¿Lo ves?
Tumblr media
Lo veo.
[Nando] "Look. Look there. See those peaks? There's no snow there. See it? That there's Chile. See it?" [Roberto] "I see it." -La Sociedad de la Nieva
Those two peaks were 130 km away from them. And over the course of 10 days, with only a week supply of food, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa had trekked over 60 km of uncharted, unforgiving high Andes terrain until they found help for their 14 friends back at the crash site across the Argentinian border.
"I told Roberto; "Look, Roberto there's no way we can go back, the only way is forward. We'll die but we'll die trying," And you know, he looked at me and said; "Okay. We have done so many things together, let's do one more; let's die together." -Nando Parrado, 2010.
