The heath in Kessel, Belgium is characterized by heather, swamps, drifting sand and ponds. Heath landscapes are a beautiful example of the interplay of culture and biodiversity. 6000 years ago 80 percent of Europe was still covered by forests. Heath areas naturally occurred only in very rare cases on coasts, in moorland areas and in the mountains. Then people started to use the forests for themselves. They required grazing land and thus not only changed the landscape, but also created new habitats for many different species. The extensive use of deforested and cleared areas resulted in increasingly nutrient-poor soils and grazing animals were bred that are particularly suitable for these areas. The upper layer of soil was regularly removed, mixed with animal manure and burned or applied to fields as fertilizer. The rain washed out the last nutrients and specially adapted plant species settled there, followed by rare animals. These unique ecosystems survive only through active human intervention, which has been achieved through centuries of heath farming. However, this type of farming has become uneconomical, and a large part of the land has been converted into arable land by applying fertiliser. Other areas became forest again because keeping animals on nutrient-poor areas is associated with lower yields. With the loss of the heathland, numerous animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. And all the beauty that has always inspired painters and poets could simply disappear. It could hardly have been the biodiversity alone that led to active conservation efforts, but rather the cultural connection to this romanticized landscape form. Ecoflora vous propose un assortiment de plus de 500 variétés de plantes ainsi que d'arbustes indigènes. Elle propose également des mélanges de graines pour prairies fleuries indigènes. Quant au potager, il n'est pas en reste puisque vous pouvez y trouver plus de 700 variétés de graines bio. En fait, cette enseigne est tenue par Freddy et depuis le début de cette année, sa fille est co-gérante et va assurer la succession de son père dans quelques années. Elle y travaille depuis 7 ans et s'investit dans différents domaines de l'entreprise familiale. Naomi nous raconte : "J’aurai sans doute mes propres préférences, mais la tendance des années précédentes restera la même". Ecoflora restera dans la continuité, en mettant toujours en valeur l'importance des plantes sauvages que ce soit dans les jardins publics ou dans ceux qui sont privés. Pour Ecloflora, le choix de proposer des plantes indigènes est très important. Naomi nous explique : “Les plantes indigènes sont inhérentes à la nature sauvage en Belgique (nos bois, nos prairies, le long des cours d’eau, en région côtière, dans les fagnes qui se trouvent dans une région de Belgique avec des sols acides). Elles sont naturellement adaptées à notre climat et à notre sol. Elles sont donc rustiques et peu sensibles aux maladies. Ces plantes indigènes contribuent d’ailleurs beaucoup plus à la biodiversité que d’autres variétés cultivées et celles exotiques (qui ne sont pas toujours reconnaissables par nos insectes indigènes et ne peuvent donc pas servir comme plantes hôtes ou nourricières)".
