You see a demon, what do you do?
Shailputri: HAHAA! Joke's on HIM - I'm too deep in the cave of the mountains he will freeze to death if he even enters lol
Brahmacharini: *too busy meditating*
Chandraghanta: cute. but the sound of my dear lil bell is enough to slayyyy him :p
Kushmanda: kill him with kindness :)
Skandamata: but wait, does he have a child? If he's a monster then who takes care of the POOR KID??? CAN I ADOPT-
Katyayani: *opens eyes slowly* *demon instantly gets blasted with her third eye* ummm.. where is he tho?
Kaalratri: SO HE HAS CHOSEN DEATHHH I SHALL EAT HIM UP ARRAH *leaps up and lets out the deadliest war cry*
Mahagauri: I'm literally having a bubble bath rn. If he disturbs me then he won't be able to see the light of day ever again <3
Siddhidatri: *laughs* baby, everything in this universe is just a manifestation of my energy. I just need to take it back thus sucking the lifeforce outta him hehehe

Navratri is a celebration of Shakti. A celebration of Prakriti.
We pray to her and ask her to bestow health and wellness on us, which i feel she does in several ways.
Each navratri my views have changed a little, every year. As a kid, ofc it used to be very literal like there are nine goddesses and we worship them. Then came the phase when i learned that we have four navratri in a year and it corresponds to a change in seasons.
Yesterday i was listening to a podcast and i heard some really interesting symbolism.
Shailputri- as the name suggests, she is the daughter of mountains or rather the king of mountains. Her name binds her to her father. Her identity is from her father, much like our identity remains tethered to our parents during childhood.
Brahmacharini- this form tells a story of ma Parvati during her tap to attain lord Shiva. We all tire away in our work, each day and every day to reach out goals.
Chandraghanta- here she is in her complete Durga form. She's weilding several weapons. It signifies and tells us how she's now an accomplished woman, a woman who has worked extremely hard and continues to do so but now she's has gained a footing in the world. She has started carving out an identity for herself.
Kushmanda- she is quiet similar to chandraghanta in her appearance, the only difference is she that she's now holding a pot in her hand. A pot of honey. Honey symbolises womb. She's has entered her motherly nurturing state and is ready to create a life.
Skandamata- mother of skanda. She no longer a holds weapons and is solely focused on her kid. Like every other ma, her entire life is currently devoted to her kid. He's the centre of her universe.
Katyayani- she takes form of Durga. She shows everybody how a woman's life doesn't end with motherhood. She is leaving behind all the ties, she isn't anyone's daughter, or wife or mother. She's her.
Kalaratri- or Kali. She is quite a sight to look at. Specifically taking such a form to scare away demons. Anyone who points fingers at her, anyone who dares call her weak- she demolishes such allegations.
Mahagauri- after going through every phase of her life. The process initiated at katyayani is now complete. She is free from boundations and gauri is now mahagauri. The one who has realised.
Siddhidatri- she looks like ma lakshmi. She's a giver. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and advancement in material and spiritual world is really the end goal. She's calm and smiling, she has accomplished enough in her life and she's now sharing it with everyone around her.

Goddess Durga is the Supreme form of Goddess Parvati (complete embodiment of Adi Shakti). Goddess Durga is a warrior form of Goddess Parvati. She is the Goddess of Beauty, Power, Love, devotion, nourishment, fertility, motherhood, destruction of evil etc. When Goddess Parvati slayed demon Durgamasur, she got the name Durga (Slayer of Durgamasur, she is invincible Goddess). There are nine forms of Goddess Durga, collectively called Navdurga. Goddess Durga/Parvati as Goddess Katyayani slayed Mahishasur and got the name Mahishasur Mardini. She being the wife of Supreme Lord Bhava (Lord Shiva), is known as Goddess Bhavani. 7th form of Goddess Durga is Kaalratri which has further more divisions which include Mahakaali, Bhadra Kaali, Dakshin Kaali, Chandika, Kaushiki. Goddess Durga is Skand Mata (Mother of Skand/Kartikey). She is also known as Gauri or Mahagauri because of her Fair skin. #navdurga #navratri2023 #navratri https://www.instagram.com/p/CqGgkA3yru0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy shardiya navratri,
So the festive season has officially begun, huh.. where did the year go? Anyways we're not here for that.
I see everyone sharing their thoughts an excitement about navratri/Durga puja and i kind of want to share my own.
Navratri in my house is vastly different from that in Gujarat/west bengal/jharkhand, basically all the states popular for their loud and colorful celebration.
We dont necessarily play garba at nights or organise huge pandals for a community get together. I mean we do have pandals and all here, and people throng in huge numbers but it's not part of tradition. It's more of an acknowledgement to traditions of other states.
In fact my experience of Navratri is very different and subdued. Here, we get up early and we all feel the floral incense in the air, a little more than usual. You can easily hear people doing the path of Durga saptashati out loud, something we don't do normally (i mean the out loud part).
The atmosphere isn't loud but it's impactful.
The weather is a little more pleasant than it was on ganesh chaturthi. I specifically wait for the kirtan in a nearby temple, every evening, which is now a norm.
The idol of maa Durga is quite possibly the most beautiful. New lehenga for her, new bangles, new mukut,, everything changes but somehow the change feels more reassuring than daunting.
Personally I listen to Lalitha sahasranamam every day, if possible.
And it's just, it's a vibe that i can't possibly put in words but it's very specific to navratri.
We have a temple here called Tapeshwari devi and oh my god, once you step foot there you will change. The experience will imprint on your soul. I remember I went there a few years back for the first time, it felt as if I've gone back in time.. i wish I would get a chance this year, it seems highly unlikely but I'm hoping.
I know a lot of people don't believe that uttar kand was originally part of Ramayana but Tapeshwari devi is dedicated to maa Sita. It is said she and three other women used to sit the for their tap. There are four idols here and no one knows which one is of sita.
Then there is this 1700 year old temple with 12 idols. The story is something i don't understand.
What I'm trying to say is that we have several centres of spiritual significance, dedicated to divine feminine but somehow instead of going the way temples of Bengal did, the expression here became something else entirely.
Durga puja is a tapas for artisans and a place for community to collaborate and bond.
Navratri is here is not like that. Sure you will find a fair kind of setting outside the temples but it's not the same.
This has become the time to seek wisdom but on your own, in a way that might feel isolating. Instead of focusing a part of energy on epressig the devotion in beautiful artistic ways, that energy is directed inwards entirely.
Sigh. Anyways, my rant is not over I've just run out of words. || Masterlist || part 2
