The Importance of Visuals

{Disclaimer: I am not an authority on kpop. What I’m writing here are things I’ve learned through research (and lurking). Some of what I write are assumptions that I’ve inferred from what I’ve gathered. If I get something wrong, or misunderstood something, please don’t hesitate to correct me :) }

Introduction

Visuals can be a tricky topic in the kpop world. Especially in the international fandom, the role of Visuals can be easily misunderstood as a member who is talentless at everything else and is only in the group because, well, they’re pretty. And, to a certain extent, that’s true. Companies do in fact scout people who look good. Examples include SM Entertainment chasing after EXO’s Sehun, or SHINee’s Minho, or BigHit Entertainment offering BTS’ Jin a chance to audition on the strength of his visual.

The Role of a Visual

However, it is important to take into account the important roles that visuals play in gaining and keeping attention on a group. In this respect, visuals play one of the most vital roles in a group. There are hundreds of trainees in Kpop companies and dozens of groups debuting every year. In such an environment, even for Big 3 (SM, YG, JYP) companies, let alone smaller companies, it can be extremely hard for a group to gain traction. Although, stan social media thrives under the war cry, “stan talent!”, it is no surprise that the vast majority of popular groups are composed of visuals or have a few “power-visuals.”

Examples include TWICE ( a group described since debut as a “revolving door” of visuals), Red Velvet (whose leader and visual, Irene, topped female member brand reputation rankings), EXO (famously said to be be composed of all visuals), and, from a previous period, SNSD (Yoona is cited to be the “perfect visual”). Even groups like BTS, who were unhappily subjected to a stream of abuse regarding their looks at the beginning of their career, initially gained attention due to the striking looks of V (“CGV”) and Jin (who went viral as “Car Door Guy” as BTS gained popularity). Other groups from smaller companies who gained attention at least in part due to visual strength include AOA (Seolhyun) and Seventeen (extremely strong visual line, but Vernon especially stands out) and INFINITE (L, another “perfect visual”).

NOTE: These groups do not gain attention SIMPLY for their visuals, but rather they are able to stand out among a dense and ever-growing crowd. Also note that the visuals are not necessarily the most popular members.

A Fan’s Perspective

Although most fans would like to believe that they are fans beyond a group’s visual and rather “stan talent,” the truth remains that many were drawn to a group because the group/member’s beauty. Beyond that initial attraction, it is indeed very possible for devotion to go deeper, especially as the fan learns more about the group.

However, as JYP stated a few years ago in a conference, Kpop companies are not selling music. They are selling the group members to the fans, or at least an image of them, as the perfect boyfriend/girlfriend or best friend. This makes the fans get deeply attached to a group and viscerally invested in their success. The success of this model is especially apparent during comeback season, when fans devote hundreds to thousands of dollars of their money and vast amounts of time trying to get their bias group to the top.

Visuals are a part of that perfect package. Every fan’s dream is the beautiful, talented lover, and visuals provide an easy escape to that fantasy.

Examples of Visuals and Their Impact

Yoona (SNSD): known for her perfect Korean beauty, Yoona is consistently ranked either as the first or second most popular member in nearly every region. She is the most well-known to the general public and is one of the highest earning Kpop stars due to her lead roles in dramas and CF’s.

Seolhyun (AOA): Seolhyun was part of the reason for AOA’s popularity and even shared her earnings with her members as they struggled in their early days. Despite a scandal, in Korea, you can Seolhyun’s face on every other block you visit.

L (INFINITE): the perfect Korean male beauty, L is a mainstay in Kdramas and is one of the highest earning Kpop stars.

Sehun (EXO): part of one of the biggest groups ever, despite Sehun’s acknowledged lack of skill in singing or rapping, he has gained attention due to his stunning looks, landing him highly profitable modeling, CF, and acting deals.

Tzuyu (TWICE): despite initially not being focused on in Sixteen, she quickly became one of the top trends on Naver whenever an episode aired. Becoming a part of TWICE through audience vote, soon after TWICE’s debut, Tzuyu was said to be earning fully half of TWICE’s income through CF deals.

Conclusion

Visuals have an extremely important role in Kpop and are a vital part of a group’s success. Visuals are also often multi-talented and should not be kept in a box for their looks. Appreciate their outer beauty, but appreciate them as beautiful humans as well.
