Court Kings: The Best Basketball Players Ever and Their Game-Changing Plays
Basketball has seen many legends grace the hardwood, but the debate on who stands as the top basketball player ever continues to inspire passionate discussions among fans and analysts alike. From awe-inspiring dunks to clutch game-winning shots, these players have not only defined eras but have also raised the bar for excellence in basketball. This blog delves into the careers of ten iconic players, examining their most game-changing plays and enduring legacies.
1. Michael Jordan: The Shot
Michael Jordan's illustrious career is punctuated with many defining moments, but "The Shot" over Craig Ehlo in the 1989 playoffs encapsulates his clutch prowess. This buzzer-beater not only clinched the series for the Chicago Bulls but also marked Jordan as a clutch performer, setting the stage for his future championships.
2. LeBron James: The Block
In Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals, LeBron James' incredible chase-down block on Andre Iguodala was a turning point that helped lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first-ever championship. This play exemplified LeBron's all-around abilities and his clutch gene in high-stakes situations.
3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: The Skyhook
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's skyhook was not just a signature move; it was an unstoppable force throughout his career. His mastery of this shot made him the NBA's all-time leading scorer and left a lasting imprint on the game.
4. Larry Bird: The Steal
Larry Bird's steal from Isiah Thomas in the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals remains one of the most iconic plays in NBA history. Bird's instinctual read and subsequent pass to Dennis Johnson for the winning basket highlighted his unparalleled basketball IQ and clutch performance.
5. Magic Johnson: The Baby Hook
In the 1987 NBA Finals, Magic Johnson's "baby hook" over the Boston Celtics’ defenders in Game 4 is a historic moment. This play not only solidified Magic's reputation as a versatile player but also helped the Lakers claim another championship.
6. Bill Russell: 11 Championships
While specific plays may not define Bill Russell's career, his 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons are a testament to his dominance and winning mentality. Russell's defensive prowess and leadership were central to the Boston Celtics' dynasty.
7. Shaquille O'Neal: The Alley-Oop Slam in 2000 Finals
Shaquille O'Neal's powerful alley-oop dunk from Kobe Bryant during the 2000 NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers epitomized the dominance of the Lakers' duo. This play is a highlight of Shaq's overwhelming physical presence on the court.
8. Tim Duncan: The 2005 Finals Clincher
Tim Duncan’s calm demeanor belied his fierce competitiveness, best illustrated by his near-quadruple-double performance in the clinching game of the 2005 NBA Finals. Duncan's ability to impact every facet of the game made him a cornerstone for the Spurs' success.
9. Kobe Bryant: 81 Points
Kobe Bryant's 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006 remains one of the greatest individual performances in NBA history. This scoring explosion underscored Kobe's talent and relentless work ethic.
10. Stephen Curry: The Game-Winner from Half Court
Stephen Curry's game-winning half-court shot against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016 solidified his status as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. This moment is emblematic of how Curry has changed the game with his deep-range shooting.
Conclusion
Each of these players has a legitimate claim to the title of the best basketball player ever, having left an indelible mark on the sport with their unique skills and memorable plays. Their legacies endure not just in the records they set or the championships they won, but in the moments of sheer brilliance that captured the imaginations of fans around the world.

The Timberwolves Have a Stiff Playoff Test. Karl-Anthony Towns Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way
Tumblr media
Image via Flo Ngala
A little over 10 months ago, Karl-Anthony Towns capped an offseason of prodigious boasting by telling GQ he was saving his finger for a championship ring. And then he backed up the big talk by helping the Timberwolves finish with one of best records in the NBA. That’s to say: Karl-Anthony Towns could so easily dunk on his haters right now. But he turns down the alley-oop.
It’s a day after the Timberwolves wrapped up their regular season and Towns is on the phone from Minnesota. Reflecting on the ups and downs of a super successful 2023-24 season that saw him make his fourth All-Star appearance and his squad earn home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, I ask KAT if he feels even the slightest bit of vindication over the critics who scoffed at his statements.

Eyes Wide Shut: Look Anywhere Except at LeBron James
Eyes wide shut - That's Laker Nation and much of the brainwashed fanbase of the NBA. As we all knew, with Russell Westbrook out, it just meant someone else was on the chopping block. Following last night's incredibly bad performance by LeBron James the new move is to say "the goat" can't be expected to play well without the right parts.  OK, let's examine that. 1.  Is the Laker team actually a bad team? And don’t they always say LeBron has a bad team?  Have you looked around the league before deciding that the Lakers roster is that bad?  Have you looked at the shooting percentages of the teammates compared to LeBron? Have you looked at their defense before saying the suck? 2. Right out of the gates all analysts were saying that the Lakers couldn't shoot and couldn't defend.  Well, the Lakers are ranked number two in defense and lead the league in steals. How is that possible on a bad team? I thought championships were won with D. Well, you can no longer claim that they can’t defend so this episode we will look at whether or not they can shoot. 3. LeBron is suffering because of his effort to include the team.  Hmmmm.  Along the same topic of whether or not the rest of the team can shoot we have to look at whether or not LeBron is truly getting his team involved. Eventually passing to someone once you have run the shot clock out is not my idea of positively involving teammates. Occasionally LeBron will deliver a good pass, but he is the recipient of great dimes more often than he is the deliverer. That’s a pretty crazy thing to say considering that his best attribute is supposedly being a facilitator.  It seems to me that he has become a bottom feeder gobbling up the easy shots while his team is left with the tough shots. Shouldn't the opposite be true? 4. Part of helping your team means drawing the defense away from them.  Does LeBron even draw double teams anymore?  The entire season I think I’ve only seen it happen a couple of times.  And we know for damn sure that he isn’t getting guarded on the perimeter. Come to think of it that’s probably why it is so easy for him to cut to the basket for those easy layups that help out his shooting percentage. 5. Back to shooting, the main focus of this video. Most of the rest of the team has a higher shooting percentage than LeBron James but they get far fewer shot attempts. By design of the media, we viewers are meant to remember the team's misses and forget all of LeBron's. 6. LeBron‘s shot selection does not make any sense - this is a guy just trying to pad his stats at the expense of his team. He is shooting 25.7% from the three-point line and yet 41% of his shots are being taken from beyond the three-point line. We’ve always known that LeBron‘s main arsenal is to finish an alley oop or run over somebody on his way to the rim - he has never been known for his shooting so why in year 20 is he insisting on continuing with something that is not working? And it’s not just that he can’t make outside shots. He can’t make wide-open outside shots. Skip and Shannon had the nerve to make fun of Westbrook getting open shots, but their eyes don’t seem to be able to go further than Westbrook because I don’t think anyone in the history of the entire NBA has been left more open than LeBron James. Last... Can AOH outshoot LeBron? I found my comfort on the court by developing an inside game because my personality type is not to be the primary shooter or ball handler. I cleaned up the boards and ended up getting good underneath, including backing people down. But to me this is a trick for surviving on the court if you don’t have the other basketball skills, thus I criticize someone who is supposed to be the goat when he plays down to that level. No one seems to expect the midrange so I developed that too. My 3 point shooting is terrible. Even when I’m open. In other words I can shoot as well as LeBron. #scapegoats #choppingblock #lebronjames #nba #angryoldhoops #basketballtruth

#Love and basketball movie#
#Love and basketball movie#
She’s had a ball in her hands since she was 4 years old and she wanted her movie to represent basketball in the best way possible. Authenticity was extremely important to Gina. Many female athletes saw themselves in Sanaa Lathan’s awesome portrayal of Monica Wright. But make no mistake, it’s as relatable and genuine as it gets as far as sports movies go. It was the first basketball movie that was centered around a female ballplayer. The film was groundbreaking in many ways and was definitely a game-changer. This movie was revolutionary in many ways and influenced an entire generation of young, female hoopers. Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film’s director, was joined by Alfre Woodard, Kyla Pratt, Sanaa Lathan, Terilyn Shrapshire, and Candace Parker for a conversation that was mediated by Patty Jenkins where they touched on each and every aspect of the film from casting to its cultural impact. Love is a flick of the wrist, hearing the ball swooshing through the net.The band got back together to reminisce and discuss the impact and legacy of Love and Basketball. One more shot, one more move, one more game-winner. It takes me back to that kid playing in grandmas yard. That feeling takes me back to a 5-year-old kid that picked up a basketball for the very first time. Sometimes I’ll go to the local YMCA for a few hours to shoot around just to have that feeling again. My love for the game will never dissipate. Maybe only being 5'7 (1.7 m) has something to do with it. Or that I’ll never get to throw an alley-oop to LeBron James. Now that I’m 28, I’ve accepted the fact that I’ll never experience scoring a basket in the NBA. Rather it is basketball, baseball, football, volleyball, or softball. Then, using the famous MJ fade away with my tongue hanging out to hit the game-winner, 5–4–3–2–1… swoosh.Īny kid growing up who fell in love with a sport surely knows the feeling of passion and happiness the game can bring. Creating in-game scenarios on the driveway at my parents' house. Then, I’d play into the dark of the night with only a yard light to see the basket. I’d spend hours studying tapes of the greatest players, imitating their moves, and implementing them into my game. After YouTube launched in 2005, highlight tapes of basketball greats such as Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant became easily accessible. I played on teams throughout elementary, middle school, and high school. I hated losing more than I loved winning. My competitiveness and an insatiable desire for winning took over. I loved the days we’d play basketball in P.E. As I grew, the fascination for the game grew as well. The moment my fingertips gripped that composite leather, every ounce of love and passion for the game traveled through my veins, connecting the ball straight to my soul.įrom that day forward, I’d ask the neighbor kids if I could play anytime they were outside. I didn’t know what the hell I was doing I was certainly too short to play on their 10-foot hoop even if I did. That day, I finally mustered up the courage to ask, “can I play?”, they agreed. I was intrigued by this game the neighbor kids were playing, basketball. That’s when you knew it was time to get your ass home. So instead, we played Hide-and-Seek, Tag, or Red Rover until the streetlights came on. There was no iPhone to scroll social media all day, no Xbox to play Fortnite. See, back in the 90s, kids played outside. I remember being at my grandma's house, and her neighbors had a hoop in their driveway. I first picked up a ball when I was 4 or 5 years old.

The NBA Finals Are Evenly Matched At 2-2
Tumblr media
The NBA Finals have delivered a high standard of play despite the injury to Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Suns made this look like it might be a walk over in game 1 but a lot of that was early series overreactions. If we’ve learned anything about the Bucks this post season, it’s that it take them and head coach Mike Budeholzer, a few games to get in to the series. Their sweep of the Miami Heat in the first round, may be the only exception to that as far as wins and losses go.
Game 1 may have been the Phoenix Suns at their best. When you get 27 points, 6 assists and 2 rebounds from Devin Booker and Chris Paul leads the way with 32 points, 9 assists and 4 boards, that’s hard to beat. That was all round destruction and it’s this kind of performance that had many fans and media saying that this would end in a sweep.
A sweep looked even more likely after game 2 of the series. The Suns actually managed to shoot 50% from 3 in game 2 and Devin Boooker was 7-13 from beyond on a night where he had 31 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.
Game 3 and finally the series goes to Milwaukee’s home court and I gotta admit game 3 is my favorite game of any Milwaukee Bucks series. The Nets dealt with it, the Hawks dealt with it and now the Suns are getting their dose too.
Every Bucks opponent has had to deal with the question of what happens when the officiating allows the Bucks to do what they do best? The Suns found out the hard way. Giannis had 17 attempts from the free throw line.
Game 3 was indeed a great game for the Bucks collectively, 5 Bucks players would score in to double digits.
Devin Booker was the biggest casualty. Scoring just 10 points on 3-14 from the field. Monty Williams would pull him from the game.
The Suns were far more ready in game 4.
The major adjustment being their interior defense was a much bigger focus for the Suns and the Suns actually led for most of the 4th quarter.
However a series of great defensive plays down the stretch by Giannis Antetokounmpo, as well as some absolute clutch plays by Khris Middleton gave allowed them to snatch the game from the Suns.
The game was tied 99-99 in the final 2 minutes of the game. Giannis made a brilliant play on Ayton as Booker attempted set him up with an alley-oop and when the Suns came down the court after Middleton scores on a pull-up jumper, CP3 would get the ball stolen by Jrue Holiday resulting in a easy fast break for the Bucks..
ESPN’s Mike Wilbon went on to Scott Van Pelt’s show and said that the Suns beat themselves with turnovers. He’s right. That game was a huge missed opportunity for Phoenix and now we have a series on our hands..
Tumblr media
I want to acknowledge former Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach and now current Phoenix Suns head coach, Monty Williams.
Please believe, I would not be dapping him up if he was coaching trash but dude is actually the great equalizer in this series. Bucks might have the most unstoppable player in the series but Monty knows how to use his guys and how to trust them. The play that he’s gotten out of Cameron Payne and Cam Johnson has been nothing short of commendable.
I actually think the Suns need a cool headed approach from their head coach more than the Bucks do. It’s weird to say this because the Suns have veterans like Chris Paul and Jae Crowder but you can tell that the rest of their team is really young.
They were not ready for how the series changed in game 3 and they were kind of shell shocked by how different the officiating would be once the series went to Milwaukee.
The thing is Milwaukee are actually one of the clunkiest and at times clumsiest teams you’ll ever watch in an NBA finals and I’m dead serious. This team is quirky and eccentric. It’s not all poise, precision and finesse with these guys, even when they’re playing well.
Tumblr media
Let me break it down.
Giannis is the out and out best player on the team and he’s carrying most of the weight. The guy can’t shoot. That’s not an indictment but it explains a lot of what you see on a possession to possession basis. He’s their star players despite what former San Antonio wing and podcaster, Stephen Jackson might tell you. Stack might actually be the most annoying person in NBA media right now.
What Stack is likely allowing himself to be swayed by is that Middleton is the most interesting player on the Bucks and I’m not talking about hype and fandom, I’m talking about his performances on a game to game basis.
See Khris is without doubt their best shooter and closer and he’s more than capable of doing what he did in game 6 against the Atlanta Hawks and scoring 23 points in a single quarter. However look at his performances on a game by game basis and you’ll notice a huge disparity in his best and worst games.
It’s literally the first question on anyone’s mind before a Bucks game. “What kind of performance will the Bucks get from Khris Middleton?”. Dude is a walking, breathing game of Russian Roulette.
This isn’t a new trend either. Since the Brooklyn Nets series in the 2nd round, the speculation, and sometimes even pressure, has mounted. “Giannis needs help” is actually code for “what the hell is Middleton doing?”.
Tumblr media
If I’m a Suns fan, the guy I’d be worried about is Deandre Ayton. Dude has been a monster level contributor throughout the Suns post season but he hasn’t scored more than 20 points in this series since game 1. Ayton was the key to beating the Denver Nuggets by outplaying Nicola Jokic and then against the Los Angeles Clippers, where they couldn’t match up with him.
To be fair Deandre is also a big part of the reason that Brook Lopez isn’t getting as many minutes as he has until now. Point is, the Suns don’t have the same inside scoring presence before and the block by Giannis in game 4 illustrated that perfectly.
Tumblr media
Game 5 awaits on Saturday night.

#1 LOS ANGELES LAKERS     VS.     #3 DENVER NUGGETS
• LEBRON’S LEGACY: LeBron James looks as focused and driven as ever at age 35 in his 17th season, as the spectacular chase-down blocks and alley-oop dunks attest. James will try to advance to the NBA Finals for the 10th time in pursuit of his fourth NBA championship. Only three players have appeared in 10 or more NBA Finals: Bill Russell (12), Sam Jones (11) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (10).
• SERBIAN SENSATION: Nikola Jokić entered the NBA with little fanfare as the 41st pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He has no shortage of admirers now. The NBA has rarely seen a player like Jokić, a 7-foot, 284-pound center who handles and passes the ball like a guard, scores from anywhere on the court, makes high-arcing, one-legged jump shots and possesses an uncanny feel for the game. At 25, the Serbian big man is already a two-time NBA All-Star and two-time All-NBA Team selection.
• ANTHONY’S SONG: Anthony Davis is in the Conference Finals for the first time in his eight-year career, providing a fitting showcase for the ultimate modern-day NBA big man. Davis scores inside and outside, defends the rim and the perimeter, and handles the ball and moves exceedingly well. He has guard-like skills, which he developed as a youngster before a massive growth spurt in high school led to his transformation into a dominant frontcourt player.
• MURRAY’S MOMENT: In February, nine players age 23 or younger played in the 2020 NBA All-Star Game – the most since the league’s first All-Star Game in 1951. Jamal Murray was not part of that group, but he is playing like he belongs among the league’s bright young stars. At 23, the Canadian guard has reached new heights during the season restart.
• AS MURRAY GOES …: Jamal Murray’s performance has dictated Denver’s success in the playoffs. In the Nuggets’ eight playoff wins, Murray is averaging 32.4 points and shooting 55.1 percent from the field. In the Nuggets’ six playoff losses, he is averaging 20.0 points and shooting 42.1 percent from the field. Murray scored 50 points in one of those losses; he did not reach 20 points in any of the other five losses.
• PASSING FANCY: LeBron James and Nikola Jokić are on the short list of the best passers at their respective positions in NBA history. Both have incredible court vision, see plays developing ahead of time and deliver the ball to teammates with precision. James, who led the NBA in assists this season, ranks eighth on the league’s career regular-season assists list – the only non-guard in the top 30. Jokić has averaged at least 7.0 assists in each of the last two seasons – an extraordinary number for a 7-foot center. ESPN analyst and former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy says Jokić is the best passing big man of all time.
• RONDO’S ROLE: Like LeBron James and Nikola Jokić, the Lakers’ Rajon Rondo is a phenomenal passer with an advanced feel for the game. Rondo missed the seeding games and the first round of the playoffs with a thumb injury, but he returned for the Western Conference Semifinals and made an immediate impact as a playmaker off the bench. Rondo is regarded for raising his game in the playoffs.
• HOMEGROWN TALENT: Denver’s run to the Western Conference Finals underscores the franchise’s success of drafting and developing talent. NBA All-Star Nikola Jokić, rising star Jamal Murray, starting guard Gary Harris, Disney breakout rookie Michael Porter Jr. and key reserve Monte Morris were acquired through the draft. Jokić and Morris were both second-round picks. The Nuggets are hoping for another second-round success story with Bol Bol, the 44th pick in 2019, who turned heads with his play during the seeding games.
• THE FUTURE IS NOW: The Nuggets have been patiently building toward this moment. In 2015-16, the first season for head coach Michael Malone and Nikola Jokić, Denver won 33 games. The Nuggets then drafted Jamal Murray and upped their win total to 40 in 2016-17. As Jokić, Murray and other young players developed alongside veteran additions such as Paul Millsap, Denver improved to 46 wins in 2017-18 and 54 wins in 2018-19. They were on a 54-win pace again in 2019-20 when the season was suspended in March.
• MILESTONE WATCH: Game 1 will be LeBron James’ 250th career playoff game, third most in NBA history behind Derek Fisher (259) and Tim Duncan (251). James is set to pass Duncan in this series and has the potential to pass Fisher in NBA Finals 2020 presented by YouTube TV if the Lakers get there.
• CAVALIER ATTITUDE: LeBron James and Mike Malone forged a strong relationship during Malone’s stint as an assistant coach with the Cavaliers from 2005-10. James respected Malone’s worth ethic and appreciated his contributions to the team’s success. Malone would move on to assistant coaching positions with New Orleans and Golden State before landing his first NBA head coaching job with Sacramento in 2013.
