A brief overview of recent events in Finnish politics:
Vilhelm Junnila, a politician in the True Finns posts nazi-adjacent jokes on the internet for years and speaks at a neo-nazi event. Nothing much happens besides discontent from the left.
In the last election, the goverment coalition is formed by the National Coalition Party (a center-right liberal conservatist party), the True Finns (a right-wing populist party), the Swedish People's Party, and the Christian Democrats. This coalition is led by now-Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of the NCP.
Orpo assigns Junnila as the Minister of Economic Affairs.
Foreign media notes that the Finnish government has a nazi (or at least a nazi-sympathizer) as a minister.
Orpo states that nazi-sympathetic conduct is unacceptable of a minister.
The Finnish government holds a motion of confidence on whether Junnila should be removed from his position as minister.
Riikka Purra, Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the True Finns, threatens to break the government if Junnila is removed.
The motion of confidence is held. Twelve congresspeople in the opposition do not attend the vote.
The National Coalition Party votes unanimously to keep a nazi as a minister.
The True Finns vote unanimously to keep a nazi as a minister.
The Christian Democrats vote unanimously to keep a nazi as a minister.
Most attending congresspeople from other parties vote to remove the nazi as a minister. Three congressmen in the Swedish People's Party vote to abstain.
An exception to this is Ben Zyskowicz, a Jewish congressman in the NCP, who abstained from voting despite being present. Notably, he was assaulted in a hate crime during his election campaign this spring.
The motion of confidence ends at 95 for, 86 against. Junnila keeps his position as minister.
Further research into Junnila's history shows that he lied about his education and experience. He had never studied political science nor had he ever worked as an entrepreneur despite his claims otherwise.
After a total of 11 days in office, Vilhelm Junnila resigns.

Just quick-ish portraits I did for some minor characters in NCP, specifically the adoptive family/siblings of Iris & the guardians of the Blue Spruce life tree. I didn't know how to put them together so I ended up just putting each portrait separately.
Their names are (from top to bottom) Ilves, Varis, Aura & Kuura. Their names are also Finnish words I personally like as a Finn, though only 1 is an actual name (I think, I have a vague memory of Aura being one)
They aren't fully Finnish though, their mother is but their father is a mirror-world native whose exact heritage is unknown. (Aura especially comes after her dad)
More Info below:
AGES: Kuura is youngest at 26, Aura comes next at 28, then there's a bit of a gap with Varis being 42 and Ilves is 47
NAME EXPLANATIONS:
Kuura = Specific type of frost
Aura = snowplow/plow/same meaning as in english depending on context, I.E a magical spiritual atmosphere surrounding a person
Varis = Crow
Ilves = Lynx
MAGIC TYPES: All 4 have a different magic type/title
Kuura is an ice elemental
Aura is a Snow Warlock (her Deity she gets the power from being Jack Frost),
Varis is a Graywalker Sorcerer (basically winter/cold themed magic that is not just about ice and snow, but a lot of things you can connect to the concept of cold and wintertime)
Ilves is a shapeshifter mage, mainly shifting into different large felines, his favorite being the snow leopard.
OCCUPATION: Their family has been guarding and managing the Northernmost Life Tree the Blue Spruce for generations. They basically greet all the souls that are born from it and help them find new families and places to go to, to start their new life. They also protect the tree from attacks and disease.
IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS: They are the adoptive family of Iris Avara (hence she shares their surname), and are friends of Marci Raye, who ended up adopting a young spirit manifested by their tree around the time she was staying with them. They are ALSO cousins of a human named Henrik Thorssen, who is the nephew of their father.
OTHER FAMILY: Their parents have retired to the human world, Norway to be specific, but still do send their kids letters. Varis has a family of his own, being the only one married and having 3 kids, two sons and one daughter. His full name is therefore Varis Avara-Harker.
PERSONALITY SUMMARY:
Ilves: The relaxed, mostly chill tall AF guy who, despite looking kind of scary at first glance, is every kid's favorite uncle who gets them the toys they want and also helps out with homework. Has a good sense of humor and is not easy to piss off, though when he DOES get mad people know to shut up.
Varis: While he seems constantly tired due to his insomnia issues since childhood, he is very gentle, attentive and caring dad/husband/brother, and shows his love for others more through actions than words. Tends to be the most serious one among his siblings.
Aura: The most outgoing and adventurous of the four, she tends to prefer doing things over sitting around and chat. Can be a bit of a troublemaker but is typically liked by people around her, as they know she generally means well. She is a big hit among kids who love her familiar snow-hawk and the tricks it can do/being able to ride her hawk as he can grow into a massive size.
Kuura: Very quiet and introverted one, he likes to spend time alone and wander around nature. He is always very kind and polite when speaking, and is the type to find joy in the smallest of things in life, like watching birds fly or having a butterfly land on his hand. He seems very oblivious, but is actually quite observant and notices things others often don't.
FUN FACTS
Aura's Hawk is named Ari (old norse for Eagle)
Varis' kids are named Aeron, Marlene and Caleb. His wife is called Lyna
Aura is bi, Kuura is gay, and Ilves & Varis are straight
Varis is the strongest out of them when it comes to magic power and variety in it, whereas Ilves is physically strongest, and Aura is fastest. Kuura in turn is stealthiest due to him being able to turn into icy mist cloud.
Their house is right at the edge of the forest opening the Life Tree stands at the center of. The house is a large Scandinavian style cottage and is also bigger on the inside than it seems on the outside
Aura wears her hair similarly to her niece Marlene, or rather Marlene wears it similarly to her
The family has had a long tradition of naming the kids using words or names from the mother's culture. Their mother is Finnish/has Finnish heritage, hence the Finnish word names. (She was the one who married into the family, whereas their dad was a Mirror-Realm native)
This is also why Varis' kids don't have Finnish names/words as their name, as per tradition names came from Lyna's side. (This is not a strict rule per say, but it is a tradition the family tends to follow, where at least kids' second names will be from the mom's culture if not the first names)
Their parents are actually both over a 100, but to average humans look to be only around 50-60 due to the whole "magic makes you age slower."
Their surname is ALSO a Finnish word and means "open/Spacious," indicating the family may have originated from Finland to begin with, or had someone from there change the family surname into this at some point for whatever reason. They don't really know nor does it really matter. (This is more of a meta-commentary about me, the creator of these characters being Finnish lol)
They have met Henrik, although Henrik has no clue his cousins are magical, even though his boyfriend is a literal witchboy too. (They haven't told him and are unaware of the said boyfriend lol)

A woman of vision
HILARY ROSE
A woman of vision award for Meghan … I know, it’s about time
Hilary Rose
Tuesday April 04 2023, 5.00pm BST, The Times It’s been hours now since we’ve heard from Montecito and I was starting to wonder if everything was OK. Has Harry reverted to type and thrown a frat party in the pool house? Have the kids mashed sweet potato into the beige soft furnishings, and Meghan been on her hands and knees with the Vanish? And can H&M still be quite as wonderful as we all remember, living humble lives of service and oh look, is that a private jet and did somebody say tiara? So thank heavens, then, for an organisation called the Ms Foundation, which has quelled any doubts and confirmed that they are indeed wonderful. The Women of Vision awards ceremony has just announced that it’s giving Meghan an award for being, guess what? A woman of vision! I know! About time Meghan is being saluted for her “lifelong advocacy for women and girls” Say what you will about the Duchess of Sussex, but she is a woman with a vision. It is true that her vision is found mostly in the mirror, but there are only so many hours in the day and she has to spend quite a lot of them being furious with the rest of us. A profile on the foundation’s website tells us that she is a “feminist, champion of human rights and gender equity and global role model” and who could put it better than that? Over to you, Camilla. Or perhaps the Princess of Wales is having a crack as we speak. Meghan is saluted for her “lifelong advocacy for women and girls”, which is, we are told, “a constant thread she weaves through both humanitarian and business ventures”, and quite so, and if we all close our eyes and wish hard enough she might tell us again about the time she complained about an advert for washing-up liquid and changed the course of history.●
Succession’s Brian Cox: Meghan’s fairytale went horribly wrong
●
Harry and Meghan eviction ‘just the start’ of King’s home shuffle
But back to the Ms Foundation, which explains that her
Archetypes
series of podcasts were record-breaking, which is usefully vague and not necessarily the first word anyone who listened to them would use. Oddly, they didn’t ask me what words I might use, so I will simply note in passing that there has been a deafening silence where talk of a second series should be. This is odd, because deafening silences aren’t really H&M’s thing. Maybe they’re building up to one. And really, who wouldn’t want another series listening to interesting people being shut down so we can hear about the washing-up liquid again? Until then, if you long for more the foundation is charging $1,500 for a ticket to the ceremony in New York on May 16 and $15,000 for a table. There, you can watch the people’s duchess presented with her award by her dear friend Gloria Steinem. She will be celebrated for her “global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls”, a magnificent sentiment in search of a meaning. If anyone is tempted to ponder the irony that Steinem has a feminist platform because of her ideas and Meghan has one because of her husband, don’t. Rejoice instead that the awards don’t clash with the coronation so we could be in for a double dose of H&M. And no rush for the RSVP, guys, it’s only a coronation, after all, and the seating plan for Westminster Abbey has been extended just in case. You’re in the NCP in Lambeth

Considering the weakened economic situation in Finland, tabloid Iltalehti asked ministers in Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government if they would be willing to reduce their own salaries.
Noting that former PMs Jyrki Katainen (NCP) and Juha Sipilä (Cen) reduced ministerial salaries by between five to seven percent, IL asked the 19 ministers in Orpo's cabinet if they would be willing to take similar action.
The only minister to respond to IL's question was Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Riikka Purra (Finns), who said she agreed with the idea.
"Yes, I would be willing to lower ministers' salaries," Purra responded in an email to IL.
She did, however, add that there were ways to get budget savings from political financing. Purra said cuts to party subsidies, bonuses and party support for wellbeing services counties might be more effective places to start.
"It is not a huge amount of money in the overall fiscal picture, but the principle is important," Purra said.
The salary of a minister currently stands at 11,266 euros a month and the Prime Minister's salary is 14,448 euros per month.
Finland adjusts to nuclear Nato
In an interview with newspaper Ilta-Sanomat Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (NCP) discussed the delicate issue of Finland adapting to Nato's nuclear deterrence policy.
Finland has long held a policy of nuclear disarmament, but since joining the defence alliance Nato earlier this year, it remains unclear what role nuclear weapons will play in the long term.
"Adjusting to the nuclear alliance requires a huge amount of knowledge on the history and understanding of how nuclear weapons work — and even more importantly, the political practices related to these weapons," Häkkänen told IS.
Häkkänen added that while Finland boosts Nato's traditional warfare capabilities, the Nordic country is a newcomer in terms of nuclear weapons policy.
"Finland is very well versed in terms of traditional, large-scale warfare and related deterrents. We have the know-how, the level of knowledge, the understanding. As far as nuclear deterrence is concerned, we should go with a notebook in hand, so to speak, in these early stages," Häkkänen told IS.
Häkkänen would not say whether Finland would participate in Nato's next major nuclear exercise this autumn, Steadfast Noon. This is the first nuclear exercise since Finland joined the alliance and could, in theory, participate in them by providing air support or sending observers.
A key feature of Nato's nuclear deterrence is European allies hosting US nuclear weapons on their own soil.
Additionally, Häkkänen said there are no plans for any new nuclear deployments and Finland still wants to remain a nuclear weapon-free state.
Men without children
Capital-based daily Helsingin Sanomat covered a statistical trend that shows nearly half of 35-year-old men in Finland are childless.
In the past few decades, the proportion of men without kids in that age group has risen significantly. In 1990, only 31 percent of 35-year-old men didn't have kids.
While 35 years of age is not a cut-off for having children, population researcher Marika Jalovaara said it helps to paint a picture of what is to come. Statisticians often use the ages of 40 years for women and 45 years for men to get a rough estimate of childlessness rates.
HS explained that Finland is exceptional in this regard and its ratio of childless men at that age could be the highest in the world. However, the paper clarified that it is difficult to measure against other countries because the statistics are not well recorded.
"When you present these figures to colleagues abroad, the reactions are quite strong. These are really wild," Jalovaara told HS.
Even compared to other Nordic countries though, Finland still has a higher proportion of childless men than its peers.
Historically, this was caused by heavy alcohol consumption and the legacy of war in Finland, the paper wrote.
By international standards Finland also has a high proportion of childless women at the age of 35, with around one-third. At the age of 40 though, only 23 percent of women in Finland were childless.

"Maharashtra Doesn't Have Woman Minister" In Cabinet: Ajit Pawar
Ajit Pawar said the new policy should provide social security for women. (File) Mumbai: Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Ajit Pawar on Wednesday pointed out that there is not a single woman in the state cabinet. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader was speaking in the Assembly on a resolution moved by Speaker Rahul Narvekar urging the government to formulate a…

Like i will depend CPL because i like it and i think that other than. Um. Things that are learning experience for a new CPPS it’s pretty okay and they seem to… well after it exploded and then came back from the dead they do genuinely seem to be. decent despite internal staff drama managing to lead to the world’s most Week for CPPSes ever
i’ll also say i’ve personally never had issues with it on firefox but that’s not to erase your experience i’m just like. i wonder why it works fine for me and it’s hell for others because i hear complaints about the client running like shit a LOT, especially in games like pizzatron. i know that i personally always got more lag with NewCP so i was curious if you got lag there too
honestly, that's fair. I do think the game has potential, and I very much want it to improve, I just have a hard time being optimistic about them with everything that's happened.
and... yeah that's weird. I know one of my friends mentioned that they couldn't get it to work on FireFox unless they closed everything else, so I don't know what's up with that. it worked normally on Chrome for me after all the crashing and freezing with FireFox, so idk man. I can't say I've experienced more lag than normal in CPLeg's games (the occasional slowdown, yes, but nothing too bad), but I did notice a problem last night where trying to close Pizzatron or Ice Fishing freezes the entire game so uh. that's something. I don't know if this is a problem with more games than just those, because Puffle Roundup and Hydro Hopper worked just fine.
and NCP... yeah I've heard the lag is pretty bad there. I can't speak for how it currently plays, though, because I only played it before Flash died entirely. most of my knowledge of the game comes from hearing friends talk about it and looking stuff up. the closest to personally playing it I've done in "recent" history was having a friend screenshare themself playing that mostly-unfunny April Fools Party they had in 2021 because I didn't want to redownload the client just to see what the hell was up with that.

Day After Quitting Congress, Ashok Chavan To Join BJP Today
A day after he quit the Congress, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is set to join the BJP later today. "Today around 12-12:30, I am going to start a new journey of my political career, I am going to join BJP," Mr Chavan told news agency ANI.
Tumblr media
He had yesterday told the media that he will take a decision on his next step in a couple of days. Deputy Chief Minister and the state's top BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, it is learnt, will welcome Mr Chavan into the party. Mr Chavan's aide Amar Rajurkar, who resigned as MLC with him, will also join the BJP today.
Sources have said the former Chief Minister may be offered a Rajya Sabha seat. That would also explain his decision to join the BJP a day after he resigned from the Congress and the Assembly: time for filing nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls is running out.
"I have resigned from the Assembly membership as an MLA. I have given my resignation to the Speaker. I have resigned from the Congress Working Committee and the Congress primary membership. I have not decided to join any party. I will clear my stand on joining a party after two days," Mr Chavan had told reporters yesterday.
Mr Chavan's exit is yet another blow to Maharashtra Congress months ahead of state polls and the general election. Earlier, key Congress leader, Milind Deora, quit the party and joined the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. Baba Siddique too left and moved to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
According to Congress sources, Mr Chavan's differences with state party chief Nana Patole played a key role in his decision. Speaking to the media yesterday, he had suggested that he was upset over the delay in finalising seat-sharing within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with just months left for the polls.
Mumbai Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said that the former Chief Minister was upset over the working style of a Congress leader in Maharashtra. He did not name any leader. "He (Chavan) had approached the top leadership. Had his complaint been taken seriously, this situation would not have happened," Mr Nirupam said.
Congress leaders have taken swipes at Mr Chavan following his decision. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh took a "washing machine" jab -- washing machine is an oft-repeated reference the Congress uses to accuse the BJP of stalling criminal investigations against Opposition leaders who switch to their side.
"When friends and colleagues leave a political party that has given them much -- perhaps much more they deserved -- it is always a matter of anguish. But to those who are vulnerable THAT Washing Machine will always prove more attractive than ideological commitment or personal loyalties," Mr Ramesh said. "These betrayers don't realise that their exit opens up vast new opportunities to those whose growth they have always stunted," he added.
Maharashtra Congress chief Patole said it is "unfortunate that leaders who have got everything are leaving the Congress party and ideology".
The son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan, Ashok Chavan wields significant influence in Nanded region. His exit comes at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi -- comprising the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, the Sharad Pawar camp of NCP and the Congress -- faces two tall poll challenges.
Ashok Chavan has had an eventful political journey so far. Starting out as a student leader during his college days, he went on to hold key posts in the Congress, including Maharashtra Congress chief and a member of the Congress Working Committee. He has served as an MP from Nanded on two occasions and been a member of both Houses of the state legislature.
After serving as state minister, he was chosen for the Chief Minister post after Vilasrao Deshmukh stepped down in the aftermath of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai. The Congress retained him on the top post after the 2009 state polls. The stint was, however, short as Mr Chavan was forced to step down amid corruption allegations related to the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
