Somehow, some way, whenever the cameras pan to the dugout, there's Mark, with Yuta close behind like a shadow, and every now and again its the other way around. Sometimes they will find themselves on the kiss cam, much to Mark’s dismay and Yuta’s enjoyment.

The first time that starting pitcher!Haechan got rushed at the mound by an angry batter, everyone watched as somehow, Doyoung got to the batter first, completely shoulder checking the batter to the ground before he could reach Haechan. Everyone was shocked except for Haechan, who just laughed instead.

Taeyong was trying to make a play at home plate when the runner intentionally rammed into him, completely knocking him to the ground very hard and kicking the wind right out of him. Within seconds, that runner was completely overrun by everyone else on the team, including the outfielders who sprinted like their lives depended on it, because NO ONE touches their catcher and gets away with it. Third baseman!Doyoung managed to pull a very sore and winded Taeyong out from the dogpile before immediately joining the fray with the rest of the team.

They decided to haze him by making him carry around a Snoopy backpack the whole season for his gear. However, they didn’t expect him to actually love the backpack as much as he actually did. Jungwoo wore that Snoopy backpack with a smile on his face the whole season, and he still uses it on a regular basis.

every now and again when they are playing a rival team, fans will hear loud screams coming from the dugout whenever the opposing pitcher is about to throw

Come to find out, those screams are coming from quiet, unsuspecting center fielder!Jaehyun. He says that the screams are meant to throw the opposing pitcher off, to varying results. The fans quickly learn that Jaehyun is, in fact, the weirdest person on the team in the best way. Compilations are quickly made of the most iconic screams.

One of left fielder!Yuta’s favorite between-inning events is when the kids get to “steal third base”

Whenever it happens, he always makes sure to be on the lookout so he can lend a hand. On his way out to his position, he always makes sure to stop and hand the base to the kids with a bright smile, even if it means that he is fully in third baseman!Doyoung’s way and that it takes him longer to get to his position.

catcher!Taeyong has been shown feeding his teammates and his coaches orange slices on multiple different occasions

after being fed up with how many sunflower seed shells were left on the floor of the dugout, third baseman!Doyoung buys everyone their own special cup with their name on it to spit their shells in to.

starting pitcher!Haechan absolutely hates the pitch clock with a glorious, furious passion

the first time that starting pitcher!Haechan and relief pitcher!Winwin get a combined no-hitter, the entire team celebrates by throwing them both into the air and carrying them off the field like royalty

Alright, alright, I know it’s a little late. I got distracted! A human error. From a human. But anyway, I’m back with the promised rundown of KIHYUN’s NCT U eras—but I’m ditching the rankings this time around, as the majority (up until UNIVERSE in 2021) took place in and around KIHYUN’s BAD eras. Everything else is the same, though, so.. Have fun!

EMPATHY  2018  GLOWSTICKS & (FAKE) GUCCI

RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC just over a week after his seventeenth birthday, the first whole NCT album was both a somewhat-old (he’d been promoting for a good two years by then, after all) but still refreshing experience for Kihyun. Participating in BLACK ON BLACK, GO, and BOSS, the vocalist threw every part of himself into it as usual—and maybe even a little more so, reinvigorated by the fact he was collaborating with members from the other unit (and ones from an upcoming one) that he’d only ever trained with in the past. He enjoyed the more mature feel of the teasers for GO, as well as the music video and the song itself—it was during this era (although it would only really become more apparent during WE GO UP promotions in September of that same year, and during EMPATHY he kept this thought mainly to himself) that he was starting to feel like the whole childish concept was something he wanted to be rid of, that he wanted to trade in for something different; and GO fit that vision perfectly. He had a notable amount of fun on the set of the music video, and slated filming it as the ‘best thing he’d get to do all year,’ despite the fact they were only three months into said year.

Due to the would-be unspoken rule of Kihyun only making an effort to have any sort of online presence when he wasn’t the biggest fan of an album’s concept or music, he was fairly offline during this era—the only actual content fans ended up getting was in the official music videos & the behind-the-scenes and dance practices for said videos. They made the most of what they were given, choosing firstly to poke fun at what they’d styled him in—one of his outfits included a horrendous rip-off Gucci jacket that was noticeable from a mile away—and secondly to enjoy the interactions he had with the members of 127 (the EMPATHY era showcased his bond with members like Johnny, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo to the public for the first time) and members like Ten and Kun, who hadn’t yet found their place in a permanent unit—although it wasn’t long in the making, as would be proved by WayV’s debut the next year. This was most prevalent with the behind-the-scenes of the BOSS music video in particular, a clip of Kihyun and Jaehyun chasing each other around dangerously close to the literal circle of fire featured in one of the later scenes while Mark watched on on the obvious verge of panic going quite viral online.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT: ⠀GO  MV  BEHIND

Kihyun getting a little too ambitious while balancing on the metal of the train tracks and nearly falling flat on his face, much to the delight of Chenle and horror of Jeno—who ran over to see if he was alright, and then proceeded to nearly trip himself up also. The nearly-fall didn’t deter him in the slightest and he continued to walk down the line, Jeno stepping up behind to follow along (he noticeably wobbled more than a few times, but still stuck with it if only to give Kihyun some company). Chenle got bored of watching—or, as Haechan called it, “got FOMO,” and it didn’t take long of observing the other two before he was running over and trying it out for himself also. Him and Kihyun were walking on parallel sides, with Jeno in the middle after having given up on the whole balancing shtick; watching as the two in front of him reached out to hold on another’s hands and intercepting so they were both grabbing hold of one of his instead. Mark cooed, Haechan pretended to throw up in his mouth.

RESONANCE PT 1  2020  VOCAL FRY & BADLY DISGUISED VODKA

IN THE MIDDLE OF running around and getting up to many a scandal with someone that was, really, doing him more harm than good, NCT came back together as a full group to release RESONANCE PT 1. For the album he traded his newfound clubhopping hobby for what’s considered by some fans as one of his best (although criminally short, what with him only participating in VOLCANO and DÉJÀ VU—something that many suspect was a sort of punishment for the bad press he’d been bringing to both Dream and, by proxy, the group as a whole by that time) performances in the entirety of his career thus far. During VOLCANO he gave listeners a few seconds of rap lines, a skill of his that had previously been rarely utilised, Kihyun’s voice taking on a raspier edge that he later mentioned off-handedly as being his “Taeyong impression,” which was met with both positive and negative reactions—as is the same with most things any idol says or does while they mention another. DÉJÀ VU saw him back to his standard vocalist position, but many slated his lines as being their favourite, or his tone standing out amongst the rest in a certain moment. Altogether, despite his public image still not being anywhere close to being fully repaired, at least he wasn’t being accused of being talentless to add fuel to the fire.

What was adding fuel to it, however, were the leaked photos of him with a shiny silver flask halfway to his mouth on the way to a taxi. It was after hours, hardly being able to be accused of drinking on the job (but with a job like being an idol, it would be a little difficult to blame him for doing so), but it still sent a few people into an outrage—and Kihyun’s response didn’t help matters either, the simple ‘whoops’ he sent on Bubble enough to prompt some into showing their truce stance on Kihyun and his situation as of late (that being, of course, that they hated him). Most took it in good humour and laughed along with him, seeing as those photos and content put out by the company were all they got to see of him for the whole era. Even his moments in things such as behind-the-scenes videos were frighteningly scarce, only appearing for a scant second or two before he was being whisked off by another member or the camera had decided to abruptly cut away in the middle of his screentime where in the past it most likely would’ve lingered a little longer. It was sort of a tug of war between the good and the bad things throughout the whole promotion period.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  KYUNDERY  INSTAGRAM  LIVE

It was almost like a miracle, the day Hendery logged into the NCT account and decided to start a live—and with Kihyun, no less. They were a little drunk, and didn’t care if the people watching realised that. In fact, them being tipsy probably played a part in the decision to go live, so maybe it was really something they should be thankful for. The majority of the time on live was spent by the pair taking turns scrolling through the filters and laughing themselves into hysterics, so much so they could barely get a word out between their fits. When they’d finished filter sampling they held an impromptu karaoke session, despite the fact their voices were cracking a minimum of twice for every line they belted out into the empty company room they’d holed themselves up in (and, when Hendery tilted the phone to show viewers their set up, it almost looked like they were camping for the night—there were a few pillows and a blanket they’d hoarded from somewhere, snacks galore, bags and a few empty bottles and one singular shoe). Beggars couldn’t be choosers in the Kihyun-content regard for this era, but it just so happened that the one thing they did get (or rather, most of them got, as some missed the notification and had to watch clips elsewhere) was something they could hold dear.

RESONANCE PT 2  2020  LUCKY NUMBERS & LEGO SETS

STILL RUNNING AROUND, still not the fan favourite he once was, most were expecting much of the same treatment during RESONANCE PT 2 as Kihyun got during PT 1. However, to the surprise of all of them, he actually received a little more screentime this promotion period around—most likely because of his involvement in the tracks 90’S LOVE and WORK IT, where there was far more extra content to go alongside just the music (as well as RAISE THE ROOF, although that didn’t receive a music video like the former two), but most fans decided to take it as the plus it undoubtedly was. He looked happier than he had in months skating around with Mark and Jeno, catching up with Ten, cracking easy jokes with both Shotaro and Sungchan in his attempts to get to know them better despite the slump he’d been in for most of the year thus far, and of course messing around to his heart’s content with Johnny and Hendery on the WORK IT set. His normal full-of-energy self was back—not that it had ever left, but he’d seemed far more tired, almost lifeless, in the months running up to the dual albums—and to see him so sunny again seemed to brighten the mood of a few of the members he was particularly close to in tandem. 

As was beginning to become the (unfortunate) norm, hardly any extra content atop what the company gave the fans came from Kihyun himself—no lives, no posts, barely any messages on Bubble, the list only went on. Some said he was simply following his own tradition of staying quiet if he liked the music making up the album he was in the middle of promoting, but most people were still under the impression that it was due to the scandals and articles and countless rumours that had completely taken over his public image with fans—decidedly for the worse, seeing as it ended up getting so bad once that people were left wondering if he was going to be kicked out of NCT on the whole. The mood was beginning to dip again, fans taking his complete lack of presence that wasn’t company-mandated to mean that they were going to be seeing even less of him in the future. Until—a post from Kihyun, a simple selca on their Twitter account of him in his 48 hockey jersey from the 90’S LOVE music video, the two simple words ‘lucky number’ as his only caption. You’d think he’d just dropped a movie-length vlog from the amount of people celebrating his (brief) return, the words ‘HE’S BACK’ trending for a few hours or so as most of his fanbase frantically changed their profile picture to the aforementioned selca.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  WORK  IT  MV  BEHIND

No one was happier to see Kihyun than Johnny, and that fact was apparent from a mile away. They were attached at the hip the second the cameras stopped rolling, always visible in the background glued to each other’s sides even if they didn’t get much time talking to the camera for the BTS video. When it was finally their turn to give their small interview (or rather, when it was Johnny’s turn, and he dragged Kihyun along with him by the arm) Johnny was resting his head atop Kihyun’s and buttoning and unbuttoning the blazer he was wearing for that scene while he spoke. Kihyun even cracked a smile or two at the jokes that had obviously only been told for the sake of his reaction, and contributed a few words here and there. Another moment from the video widely loved was from the scene on the wide open field, where he was captured sprinting away from Jungwoo giving chase, Jaemin and Johnny close behind, wide grins on all of their faces and the faint sound of laughter being picked up. Jisung was standing and watching with a small smile, with the rest making bets on who was going to trip over their very-much-not-made-for-running shoes first.

UNIVERSE  2021  BASEBALL BATS & BETTER DAYS

WELL ON THE WAY to being fully back to his normal self again (despite it being a couple years in the making), UNIVERSE saw Kihyun far happier than the previous two promotion periods, almost reaching his mood during the EMPATHY era. Participating in songs UNIVERSE (LET’S PLAY BALL), OK!, BIRTHDAY PARTY, and of course BEAUTIFUL, it wasn’t as if he was at a loss for things to do. He admitted it was tiring, but also that it was fun—because with the more songs he got to work on, the more time he was given the chance to spend with members not in his unit (namely Hendery, Xiaojun, Johnny, and Jungwoo—although he did talk a little more with Shotaro and Sungchan also, stating proudly to the camera on one occasion that they’d been thinking about going out for dinner one night in the future). He also found it fun because he enjoyed every track on the album, even if he didn’t make an appearance on most of them. Despite the hate some of them got from the fanbase (BIRTHDAY PARTY in particular) he held firm and even sent a few Bubble messages defending them in earnest, complete with angry kaomojis and one (not really) accidental swear. Kihyun saw UNIVERSE as his chance to prove he was ready to be a proper representative of the neos after his nearly-two-year-long slump, and was truly giving it his all.

Like the mood maker he’d always been, this dramatic change for the better in his demeanour affected everyone’s around him also. A few member’s smiles always seemed a little wider now that Kihyun was nearly back to normal, after they felt far more confident in the hope he’d bounce back stronger than ever, and benefit all of them—Dream members in particular, of course—while doing so. UNIVERSE was also an era in which Kihyun put his extrovert nature to work and gave fans interactions with members they’d barely been allowed to see him share one word with—the main ones being Doyoung, Kun, and the most surprising to a fairly large amount of fans, Winwin. Despite only appearing with the latter on BEAUTIFUL (as it was a whole-group song), once things like the jacket BTS began to be released, they were made witness to the bond the two of them shared; far closer than apparently most had ever dreamed of them being. Kihyun was as affectionate with the Wayv member as any other person in the group, but as he only did with a few of them, Winwin was reciprocating—a returned hug here, tolerating a little handholding there. He wasn’t exactly matching the boundless enthusiasm the acts of affection were performed with, but no one was really expecting that anyway. It just went to show that Kihyun could pull most people into his orbit, even if it was just for a moment or two.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  ALBUM  UNBOXING

Placed into a group with Johnny, Hendery, and Shotaro, Kihyun was having the time of his life. He went to lengths to include the newer member in all of his conversations, light-heartedly prodding at him like he’d known him for years, and even making an effort to slow down his usual break-neck pace of speaking so that Shotaro would have a better chance of understanding him fully—the ribbing could’ve gone a lot worse if the latter thought Kihyun was actually poking fun at him, but thankfully Shotaro took it well and even gave it right back on a couple of occasions, which made all four of them burst into laughter. For his pulls, Kihyun received a Kun photocard (he couldn’t have ripped off his phone case fast enough, with enough force that he nearly sent both it and the HOT SAUCE era Jeno that was still inside flying across the room), a Johnny poster (which the 127 member was delighted about, and demanded to have a picture sent to him later of said poster tacked up on Kihyun’s wall), a Jaemin postcard, and a Mark sticker—which Kihyun immediately stuck on his phone case also.

GOLDEN AGE  2023  POLO SHIRTS & ..PURPOSE?

HAVING MOVED FAR PAST all that was weighing on his mind during previous whole-group slbums, Kihyun went above and beyond for GOLDEN AGE. Featuring in INTERLUDE: OASIS, THE BAT, ALLEY OOP, and obviously GOLDEN AGE, he made sure to throw more than he’d ever thrown before into recording. He was fully aware that the past years hadn’t been his best, and despite already making amends during UNIVERSE, he still wanted to prove his worth all over again. Everything was fully behind him, and it showed in the sparkle in his eyes and brightness of his laughter that came alongside every appearance of his in any piece of behind-the-scenes content. Always smiling, always energetic, always wanting to make whoever he was laugh, even if it was just for a second. Although he did stick to his usual (and very obviously favourite) members—Mark, Jeno, Chenle, Johnny, Hendery, Niko—he did make sure to wrap all of them in a too-tight hug and hang off of them while they talking to other members or giving mini interviews to cameras at some point or another. ‘Spreading the love,’ he called it, to which Chenle beside him, through poorly contained snickers, quipped that he was also probably ‘spreading diseases,’ which earned him a punch in the stomach.

Kihyun even made an effort to show up (often unannounced) to sets of the track videos he wasn’t involved in—namely PADO and KANGAROO. There he enjoyed himself thoroughly, poking at Jaehyun’s hair, dragging Donghyuck off to who-knows where, and making fun of Hendery’s outfit on one set, and latching onto Renjun’s back, avoiding small talk with Yangyang at all costs with red ears, and cooing obnoxiously loudly at Jisung on the other. He opened his copy of the album on a live with Jungwoo and Mark, and pulled a Xiaojun photocard which, as per, he immediately stuck over the face of ISTJ Renjun and patted with horribly contained smugness (he then remarked to the camera that he barely pulled Xiaojun in any of his WayV albums, and so it was practically a miracle). And apart from the live, he was very online in general—once again breaking his rule of staying quiet if he was happy with it all. He posted on his Instagram, he was sending messages on Bubble at least once every week instead of monthly at best, he was going live with just about every member of the group (there was a lot of karaoke, a lot of giggling of stupid filters, and a lot of radio hours mish-mashed with fit checks mish-mashed with impromptu fashion shows). Overall—a very happy time for Kihyun, and everyone around him.

MY  FAVOURITE  MOMENT:  #1  MARKF  ACTIVITIES  (SORT  OF)

He’d never made any attempt to hide his love for Mark (like most of the group, really) but during GOLDEN AGE it felt like he was turning it up to eleven. During the fit checks and fashion shows on live, sometimes Kihyun would be decked out in full Polo Ralph Lauren—laughing all the while he showed it off, but wearing it all the same; no doubt because of a certain someone’s connection to it. He even bought a flat cap, and had great delight in showing it off to anyone who wanted to see it. Mark’s music taste also looked like it was rubbing off on him. Suddenly he was sharing Justin Bieber songs (mid 2010’s era Justin in particular—the PURPOSE album if you want to be extra specific), doing dance covers, almost to the point where it felt like he was trying out a new era of being a mini-Mark—which, when brought up to him on a fancall, set Kihyun off into uncontrollable laughter for so long his and the fan’s time nearly ran out because of it. It was there, quickly trying to cram all of his explanation in before he was made to hung up, that he told them that it was his penalty that came out of a bet with Chenle that Kihyun had evidently lost. What the bet was had yet to be determined, but all inquiries after that were met with a secretive smile and a finger to his lips. Mark did appreciate the fanboying, though, despite it not being entirely genuine—he posted a selfie on Bubble of him and Kihyun in their matching caps and argyle sweaters with an abundance of hearts coming afterwards.

E.O.L: First Kiss (NCT 127)

Taeil is always such a gentleman. Every date, he brings you flowers, chocolates, or stuffed animals. He never lets you pay, even when you offer, and is always courteous. Even on the dates squeezed in during his busy schedule, he is nothing but sweet and funny. You anticipate a kiss whenever he bids you goodbye, but you never get one. By the fifth date, you're growing frustrated. And on the sixth date, you finally break.

He's holding your hand, caressing the skin on the back of your hand with his thumb. Your door approaches, and you know you'll be left wanting if you don't make the first move. So after he finishes telling you how wonderful the night was, he's so glad he got to see you. You boldly tell him, "I had a great time too, but I know something that would make tonight perfect."

He makes an inquisitive sound, and you move, leaning in to kiss him. It's a simple press of lips, but it's enough to break through whatever had been holding him back because as you pull away, he follows, meeting your lips again. This time the press of lips is heated as he steps closer to you, hands coming up to frame your face.

After, he admits, "I don't know why I was so afraid to do that sooner."

Sometimes dating Johnny feels like riding on a rollercoaster, moving too fast, but every moment full of excitement and anticipation. You wouldn't trade the experience for anything. You wouldn't want to be on that rollercoaster with anyone but him. He's always steadfast and sure and gives you the confidence to follow his lead. He switches between hopelessly romantic - planning perfect dates to a best friend - gossiping and teasing effortlessly.

The first kiss surprises you a little; he points across the water at how the lanterns float above the river. When you turn your attention back to him, some benign comment setting on your tongue - he kisses the words from your mouth, softer than you expected and sugary sweet, slow like honey dripping from the hive. "Sorry," he says when he pulls away, "You were going to say something?"

"What? No," you mutter, feeling a little dazed.

"No?" He chuckles, undoubtedly noticing your gaze hasn't left his lips.

"No," you confirm, gaining confidence, before rocking forward to kiss him again. The grin pressed against your lips only serves to make the kiss better.

You've noticed that Taeyong just hasn't been himself the last few days, tiredness a dark weight beneath his eyes. You want to do something special for him. With care, you make him a meal with all the side dishes you think he might enjoy, even taking the time to bake brownies. You're a little nervous when you let him into your apartment, fearing you may have gone overboard. It could be too much, too soon.

He's silent when he catches sight of the spread of food across the table. Words bubble in your throat, ready to come tumbling out, and the urge to babble out excuses and apologies is hard to swallow. Suddenly he turns to you, startling you when he kisses you. He pulls away instantly. "I'm sorry."

"No." You wave the apology away. "Please kiss me again. I was just surprised."

He smiles sweetly, this time moving in slowly to kiss you soundly. "Thank you for all this - it means a lot to me." The sincerity in the gesture had filled him to the brim with happiness and gratitude that he just had to express.

You're admiring the scenery from your perch on a rock when you realize Yuta's staring. You worry that you may have gotten dirt on your face. You're starting to enjoy these treks through the woods with him, and you're growing accustomed to the dirt and bugs that come with them.

"Can I kiss you?" The intense way that he's been staring suddenly makes sense. There's only one correct answer to the question, and you blurt it out eagerly. "Yes."

He smirks at the obvious eagerness, moving forward to devour you.

You've thought Doyoung was going to kiss you no less than three times already today. You had held your breath each time he'd leaned in closer, anticipating the first kiss, but he moved away each time. You want it so much but don't want to be too forward. So, you wait.

Finally, you're rewarded for your patients with the sweetest kiss. "Is this okay," he asks after the first brush of his lips against yours. The warmth of his words across your lips sends chills across your skin.

"Yes," you assure, nodding eagerly.

Jaehyun pulls up to the front of your building, putting the car into park. You turn expectantly toward him. He chuckles at your eagerness, but you don't feel ashamed. He leans across the console pressing his lips against your forehead. The sweet gesture never fails to make you smile, the tender affection making you giddy.

The way he tilts your chin up with the gentle press of his fingers is new, though. His lips against your lips are so much better.

Your mother always warned you about peer pressure, but you never quite learned how to say no to people you care about. This is why when Jungwoo asks you to mimic the cute actions of the tik toker, you do so even though you feel hot with embarrassment. He squeals and kisses each of your puffed-out checks.

"So cute!" He gushes, fingers tickling at your sides like he can't keep from touching you.

You whine, starting to protest while squirming in his grip. Then his lips are pressed against yours in a sweet kiss that silences your half-hearted protest.

Mark walks you to your door, always so courteous. You're halfway tempted to invite him inside as the two of you say your goodbyes for the night, but you don't have the nerve. You settle for rocking forward on your feet, giving him a quick kiss. Turning to bolt into your apartment right after. He catches you around the waist before you can, wide-eyed and grinning. "Can you do that again?"

Letting him pull you forward by the waist is the easiest thing. Giddy with the knowledge that this is apparently something you can do now - kiss him, again and again.

Haechan cheers as the arcade game before you declares him the victor. You roll your eyes at his gloating. "I won fair and square, and now I want my prize," he states, turning to you with mischief shining in his eyes.

Fair and square is debatable, but you know from experience that you can't win an argument with him. Instead, you give him what he wants… sort of. You pull down your face mask, but not his, kissing his covered lips.

He gasps, "That's not right!"

You laugh, dancing out of his reach. "I gave you a kiss!"

"I want a real kiss," he demands, pulling down his face mask and giving chase with puckered lips.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀❝ but it's all divided into sub - units, and mark is their main man, he's in like all of them. he's the leader of nct dream — yeah, all the sub - units have their own leader, you with me so far ? — but that's where THIS guy comes in, this is TAEYONG ; he's the leader of the sub - unit 127 AND the entirety of nct as a whole, despite there being separate leaders for each sub - unit. ❞

I always think that within the group, Doyoung doesn’t have the chance to stand out. He’s not unique. His vocal is cool, so compared to taeil and haechan’s vocal which are sharper, warmer and have this piercing quality(especially during high notes, they have more resonance); plus their title tracks which suits haechan and taeil voices more, Doyoung’s voice is pale in comparison to them. And he always got parts that is quite high which is not his comfortable range, so i see he struggles a lot more compared to taeil haechan. So he falls into an average singer in comparison.

He also doesn’t stand out in the dance department. Within the group he was said to be the worst in dancing. But it’s nct, he CAN dance but just average compared to other members.

In other fields like acting and modelling, he’s just warming up. Variety as well.

The thing is, he works so hard especially in singing. He wants to be remembered because of his singing but at the end of the day, he’ll never be good enough like other members. Wait, no it’s not that he’s not good enough, he just doesn’t have a unique quality in his voice. Taeil is a powerhouse vocal, haechan has unique voice as well, jaehyun is a very good barritone. And because he also did okay in other field, makes me think of him being jacks of all trades but a master of none. This situation can be good or a bad thing. Makes me also think of hard work over talent. But in this case the more talented people work equally hard as him, so…

People say Jaehyun is a tenor, actually.

I see your point. In the last albums the songs are more tailored for Taeil and Haechan. If Doyoung gets parts to stand out, they are in slower B-tracks (like Lightbulb). He also adapts his voice to Korean taste, makes it breathy, which results in it not sounding very strong (especially alongside Taeil). Doyoung is the backbone, he harmonises with everyone, he does backvocals to add layers, addlibs, he gives Taeil breathing space to prepare for a big note. (2 Baddies is a good example, Doyoung leads Na-Na-Na. Doyoung almost always leads the choruses). He is an instrument in an orchestra. If you listen to an NCT song carefully, not on the background, all 4 of the main vocals stand out all the time.

I wouldn't agree that Doyoung's voice is unmemorable. You are talking personal taste here. I, personally, find Haechan to be "average". I hear this nasal tone in other k-pop groups all the time (not as strong technically, but similar in colour, I even get fooled for a second here and there because I'm not too familiar with Dream's discography). I also can sometimes hear that Haechan isn't strong vocally as Taeil and Doyoung, it is noticeable in places. And, pwraonally, I find Taeil often lacking in emotion as well. The uncrossable gap you are talking about isn't there.

Doyoung has a distinct tone. And most of his fans like him for his voice (they just don't spend their time on TW and don't participate in squabbles). He wouldn't get so many OSTs if he was unmemorable. You don't see a singer's face to attract with visuals.

I do agree (and Doyoung as well) that his voice isn't one of a kind (he is no Houston) and that technically he has a big room to grow (he is no Kyuhyun either). But he works on it. Which only makes him more relateable and interesting to follow as an idol. At a certain angle, it his attractive point. And I saw many of his fans supporting him for this trait exactly.

Doyoung is frustrated with his position in 127 (it took him time and effort to understands the benefits), but he is not a person to just whine. He got his OSTs and he got money for his covers. He is given all the duets and has always been pushed as a vocalist first and foremost.

Your opinion about Jaehyun's voice doesn't reflect in reality. Jaehyun is always excluded from the talks about NCT vocals. And SM has hard time weaving him in 127's songs. He is super in Tende combo, but SM want to highlight Woo and Hyuk more recently, so Jae gets rap parts.

Doyoung is an idol. As an idol he stands out. Asian fans love him. Whatever he wears or uses is instantly sold out. He is simply not the type for Westerners. And it's OK. That's the point of putting diverse members in one group. By their profession idols are jacks of all trades (they are not even expected to sing well). And it's the members with only one skill (Taeil), who loses the game of popularity. It's Taeil who gets cut by editors in MVs during his high notes. Doyoung gets his eyes close up shots.

Doyoung does variety and YT content not only for himself, he does it for the group. He can get all the attention, but he is afraid to stand out too much, he sacrifices himself for the group (he lets to be teased, for one, while he can have the upper hand, he gives the credit to others). You are saying he isn't "good enough" in comparion to others, while he is daily accused of hogging all the opportunities from other members.

SM has a serious problem of balancing their artists. Like maybe send all the Neos on a 2 month vacation and promote someone else for a change instead of trading of Dream and 127 comebacks every few months as if those are the only two options you have to make money with (and as if Mark and Haechan are fine never getting time off because they will be promoting one group then recording and shooting and promoting the other group in an endless cycle) like they aren't just working when they have public facing appearances - there is all the choreo they need to learn studio time for recording the newest comeback + shooting both album jackets and MVs all happening silently BEFORE the teaser schedule comes out and the promotions begin in earnest. There is also youtube content + tiktok challenges as well as keeping up with bubble because not posting for a month isn't an option when people pay you to post - and there are external endorsement campaigns, which also take up time to shoot. Like we might just get to see 3 photos and a 1 minute clip of some of these things but that doesn't mean that those aren't hours of work and days when they can't relaxe. As an adult who has been working for over 10 years I can't even fathom the amount of hours and the lack of breaks that some of the Neos (Mark especially) have been pulling for 7 years now. Like just reading about shooting conditions for some MVs... grueling stuff. Yes they get payed well for their time but money can't save you from collapsing from being overworked, from needing sleep and rest

i couldn’t have put it better myself, anon. we only see a fraction of the work they put in plus we need to consider the physical stress of the LONG work days and endless dance practices. and the mental stress that comes with being an idol in the public eye where you are scrutinized by millions. they barely have any personal rime for themselves to unwind, pursue outside hobbies, see friends and family, relax, heal from injuries etc. i’m so with you on sm needing to give nct a nice big vacation for AT LEAST a few months

The end of 2023 is fast approaching, so I invite you to sum up the year!

January, the month marking the start of the new year, brought a lot of excitement to fans. At the beginning of the year, fans of the talented singer IU were informed of her relationship with Korean actor Lee Jong-suk.

New Year's revelations for NCT 127 and BTS fans began with a big argument. Members of NCT 127 briefly mentioned BTS during a recent concert, sharing stories from their stay in Colombia. The comment, however, did not please many BTS ARMYS fans, although others came to NCT 127's aid. During the interview, Jungwoo revealed that every time they went somewhere to eat, they were recognized as "another group." This was not without revealing the name of the group, which turned out to be BTS. The Army did not like the fact that other idols were using the image of their favorite band, and the two groups of fans clashed on the Internet flipping arguments for and against their theory. An all-out war began to brew between BTS fans and NCTzens, with the latter reiterating that NCT 127 was not meaning any disrespect toward BTS.

In February, Kim Heechul joined BJ Choi Goon's live broadcast on AfreecaTV as a special guest while being inebriated. This is not the first time his sharp mouth has stirred up controversy . However, this time, even though BJ Choi tried to dissuade him from speaking out by muting the microphone, Heechul made many controversial statements.

March was very stressful for Chaeyoung, a member of Twice - one of the most globally successful K-pop groups. She has apologized after wearing a T-shirt featuring a swastika. The 23-year-old's T-shirt featured an image of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious wearing a swastika logo.

April was a very tragic month for Astro fans. The South Korean singer, actor, dancer and model in Fantagio's agency Monbin was found dead in his home. The 25-year-old took his own life.

Ravi and Nafla were arraigned for conspiring with a broker to submit a false medical certificate of epilepsy in order to qualify for exemption from compulsory service.

In April, both, charged with evading mandatory service, admitted all charges. Therefore, the prosecution requested respectively 2 years and 2.5 years in prison.

In May, we could hear again about IU and its problems with songs. The singer was accused of plagiarizing as many as 6 songs. At the beginning of the month, fans of Kai of Exo may have received quite a shock when it was revealed that the singer had enlisted in the army instead of preparing for a comeback with the group. Fans' displeasure was evident all over the Internet.

Another of the K-pop controversies that troubled fans took place during Bang Chan's weekly live broadcast, Chan's Room. The singer talked about one of the younger groups not adhering much to Korean culture, so the singer referred to the matter in a very negative light. This did not meet with the approval of his fans.

On May 22, ENHYPEN rolled out its most-awaited comeback, DARK BLOOD, with the song Bite Me as its title track. While many fans enjoyed it, some were displeased by the choice of choreography, making it sit amongst the list of K-pop controversies in 2023. Given that it's not welcomed by South Korean standards to display seductive dance performances, especially those involving a partner of the opposite s*x, Bite Me's choreography executing the same gained a lot of criticism. However, it got worse when fans started to express serious displeasure by hiring protest trucks in front of HYBE LABELS.

In June, Baekhyun, Xiumin and Chen of EXO terminate their contracts with SM and take legal action against the SM label.

In July, South Korea's Fair Trade Commission launched an investigation into unfair contracts by some of South Korea's biggest entertainment companies known as the "Big Five" (HYBE, SM Ent, YG Ent, JYP Ent and Kakao Ent).

In August, 22-year-old Choi Won-jong drove a car into pedestrians outside a department store in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, then attacked shoppers inside the building with a knife. After this attack, threats began pouring on k-pop idol groups, after which the idols lost their sense of security. The most hostile posts were directed toward members of SM Label, where Winter - a member of the AESPA team - received a comment with a death threat.

On another note, in the first half of August, Joshua of SEVENTEEN became one of the most discussed idols in the K-pop community. The reason for this is speculation about his alleged affair with an alleged non-star girlfriend, which caught the attention of Internet users.

In September The Korean Business Research Institute recently announced the brand reputation rankings for the most popular Kpop rookie idol groups in September 2023. The Institute determined the rankings by analyzing the big data of rookie groups collected from August 5 to September 5, 2023. NewJeans came in first place, followed closely by LE SSERAFIM, ZEROBASEONE, H1-Key, and NMIXX. These groups have impressed fans with their performances and have made a strong impact in the industry.

K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink rocked the boat with her decision to participate in Le Crazy Horse cabaret in Paris while in town for September’s Paris Fashion Week.

In October, k-pop artist G-Dragon and actor Lee Sun-kyun hit the headlines because of drug scandals. On the occasion of the scandal, there was much speculation about links between members of bands such as BTS and Blackpink and the drug-using community, but both record labels dismissed the rumors and denied any connection between the idols and illegal substances.

In November, after eleven years with the label, all BTOB members decided not to renew their contracts with CUBE.

December ended with G-Dragon being acquitted of all charges brought against him by the police. In addition, the singer decided to leave the YG label for good.
