Small Time + Nerdy Etsy Crochet / Knit / Craft People

(Tl;dr at the bottom) So I have an Etsy ( https://www.etsy.com/shop/NerdCrochet ). Like ya do. (And knitters/crafters, give me just a sec I’m gonna talk crochet here for a bit but I’m coming back to you.)

I don’t have a lot of stuff on here. Why? Because crochet takes some tiiiiime to do. Time that I don’t have because I have a full time job because if I crocheted as a full time job I’d a) have no money and b) have the m o s t carpal tunnel.

Do I get orders out? Yes but sometimes with struggle. Do I have a lot of them? Hahahahaha I’m literally blown away at the fact that I’ve had 4 orders in the past month or so. Main reason: I don’t have a whole lot up there. I really enjoy making dolls and dice bags and while easy dice bags I can make in an afternoon, others take more time depending on size and actual time that I have

Knitters, crafters (people who make cosplay props, nerdy jewelry, fandom-inspired candles and soaps, etc.), now I’m including you in the conversation. Sorry for leaving you out for two paragraphs.

Creating by hand is difficult and it takes a long time. I love making Amigurumi for instance (crochet dolls) and those can take weeks of effort depending on complexity and size. Some stores are able to keep an inventory and/or churn out orders with no issue. Wonderful for (and absolutely nothing against) them! But people like us who use Etsy as a kind of “extra cash” sort of basis sometimes just can’t seem to keep up. Their larger inventories, larger teams, better promoting make things difficult. Someone really has to like what we’ve done AND determine that we aren’t charging too much (in their mind, even though most of our stuff can’t be massed produced like homemade cosmetics).

Just this week I felt like I was drowning because I had two orders, work was ramping up and busy (therefore leaving me exhausted with no energy or work on things at home), and my family was stressing me out. But I had these two orders that kept ticking down on a Shipping Due in [x] Days timer.

Okay now give me just a second. I’m going to branch a little bit then come back. I’ve been thinking of rebranding for a little bit now, away from the specifics of “crochet” in the shop name and things listed. I know what I want to call it (which I won’t share until I have the name claimed). I’m not just into crochet, after all. I began a journey in cosplay and found out holy shit do I enjoy making the props. (The Phoenix Fire Gauntlet from The Adventure Zone was my first attempt at craft foam projects. Working on v2 now.) The templates and guide for all these came from stormthecastle.com and Will (the owner of the site) gave me permission to sell as long as I link back to his site/YouTube videos. I really like making and modifying these but again, they take a long time. Including time taken up by Real Job and Basic Human Things, the glowing Witcher sword took me at LEAST three weeks. I can’t remember exactly how long and I’m not sure I want to know. It was for a Christmas present for a Witcher Loving friend, so it had to be done in time for the holidays, but that cut into Etsy-order time. No bueno.

So let’s cut to the chase shall we?

What was all this typing for, after all?

This is what I propose: with the rebranding of my store, it changes into a group store. More members, more people that make The Things, more inventory, all the better! “Wait a second, NerdCrochet. If I’m making The Thing, I don’t want to have to split the money between everyone else! I made it, not them!” Okay, good, I totally get that and I agree. So here’s how I imagine it:

Everyone can list their own items. More inventory. Let’s say the resource is available for others to create this item. In terms of crochet, let’s say the pattern is available. We can work with the example of the pokeballs. Easily the simplest thing for me to make in the store. I listed it, I set the price at which I believe the labor is worth. Currently, it’s listed at $9 since it takes me a max of two hours and it’s easy enough I can just watch Netflix and almost never have to look at it. Because it’s my listing, I get first pick of whether I want to take it on.

But let’s also say I’m just not feeling it. Maybe, work is crazy, my family is driving me nuts, and I’ve got another order I’m working on (for the scenario, someone custom ordered a Kyogre Amigurumi and that takes a while). I don’t want to do it. So I post in a group chat we’d have that I’m not down for it. Others who can crochet can post that they are free to fill the order. The first person that responds, that the Listing Creator approves, grabs it. After that, it should almost always be completed by due date.

“You’re not explaining about the money… now I’ve made and shipped this ball and the money is still going to YOUR bank account!” Not a problem, really. I simply do a PayPal/whatever-system-you-prefer transfer over to you and now that sweet sweet $9 minus-Etsy-fees is yours.

In the case of no one picking it up by the time you’re able to start it/no other creators of the required skill level in the group, the project is yours. But with a little more looseness in terms of Ship By date. Feel free to update the deadline and explain to the customer that they are now top of the queue and you’ve begun work on the order.

And for quality control, we could say that someone ordered a foam board dagger that you don’t want to do. You post it, someone (we’ll call him Thomas) volunteers to take it on, but the detailing on it is beyond what you think Thomas (pulling a name out of the air) can do. However, you’re willing to give him a shot. You could tell Thomas to send you pictures of the finished product or WIP pics and if you’re not satisfied enough that it should go to a customer, you could say that you’re not comfortable with it going to a customer. So what I’m saying with this is that you need to be able to accept this kind of thing being a possibility. No hard feelings between Thomas and the Lister need to happen. Just because Thomas can’t do the detailing right NOW doesn’t mean he can’t get better. Art is a process, after all.

As for Thomas, now he’s got this dagger he wasn’t able to sell. Thomas can list this item on his personal/individual shop if he wants or he’s got a nice homemade gift for a geek friend. He can do what he wants with it.

Want to help make a group Etsy store of small time, nerdy creators? That way we have more listed inventory, more hands, more visibility, etc. Any money made from something you created with your hands would entirely go to you. Having a team would mean being able to hand off an order to a volunteering member of the team but always getting first pick if it’s something that you listed in the store.
