Join me as I rescue a #ploverchick who fell down a storm water drain. The parent #plovers were in a bit of a flap but with some valuable help from the team @brisbanecitycouncil a plan was hatched and the chick was safely reunited with its parents.

It was a great feeling to help the trapped little chick and I’m excited to share the happy ending. Keep a watch out for nesting birds this season. I recommend contacting the team at BCC if you’re in the same situation (or a wildlife rescue team), who were more than happy to help me rescue the little chick, by lifting the extremely heavy metal storm water drain lid, so I could reach down and collect it. Thank you!

Hace un par de semanas tuve la suerte de poder acompañar a un Agente Medioambiental mientras realizaba el censo del chorlitejo (Charadrius alexandrinus) por la costa que va desde Guardamar del Segura hasta La Mata. Los datos fueron alarmantes. Mediante la observación directa y anotación de nidos, huevos y adultos avistados, se pueden analizar los datos año tras año y analizar la evolución de la especie en la zona. Los datos del año anterior no fueron buenos y los de este año son peores. El chorlitejo anida en las playas, haciendo pequeños huecos en la arena, donde pone entre 2 y 3 huevos. Es f��cil imaginar cuál puede ser la causa principal del declive de esta especie es nuestras costas. Sí, efectivamente, la acción humana. El turismo masivo y precoz, comenzando ya desde Semana Santa a invadir las playas sin ningún miramiento, impide la nidificación y, además, destruye los pocos nidos que han podido formarse. La incompatibilidad entre la actividad humana y el resto de seres vivos es cada vez más evidente. Esta situación lleva, como mínimo, a preguntarse, ¿seremos capaces en algún momento de buscar la manera de convivir con el resto de planeta?
