This could vie for possibly being the freakiest underwater experience I have had. The seven colours of our colour spectrum are absorbed one by one the deeper you go because water is denser than air. That makes it difficult for colours to pass through this density and reach our eyes. Imagine being at the exact depth where the colour red disappears and then have a look at your dive buddy’s predominantly red wetsuit. Now that’s some real life CGI! Eventually, you are left with the loss of the colour blue at 60 meters below the surface. Artificial lights and colour filters for your underwater cameras will help you there. Case in point, this bright sandy bottom which has been captured by a colour filter. Notice the change in colour as I rise and fall slightly. . . Explore Netrani Island the Absolute way!

Finished part of your PADI Open Water Diver course but confused where to finish? Never dived before but want to take the plunge? Stressed with the week and need some relief?

Allow me to take you on a journey to “The treasure in our backyards”: Netrani Island.

Eager and excited, we depart on Friday evening and find ourselves at the gates of a small town in Northern Karnataka called Murudeshwar in time to watch the sun rise over the green hills.

Our dive sites lay around 19 kilometers off the coast where the water clears up and we find ourselves at an isolated and uninhabited Island. Lucky voyagers often spot dolphins en-route. Here, we descend on a lively reef with arguably the clearest water closest to Mainland India’s coastline. Suitable for PADI courses and fun divers, diving Netrani Island is simply a pleasure.

Apart from having a healthy population of reef fish, turtles and eels, locals occasionally spot whale sharks & humpback whales on their migratory routes. Our surface intervals are filled with fresh cut fruits, refreshments and excited chatter about our sightings. After our dives, the captain heads back and we see Shivas statue steadily growing in the distant horizon.

Back on shore and refreshed with a sense of peacefulness, anticipation grows for Day Two. The following day calls for another immersive experience which remains in fond memory for weeks to come. Our journey back begins Sunday evening and some wish that the bus was just a boat taking us to our next dive site.

I wanted to take a break from my preachiness in a this post but a recent Instagram story hit home hard for me and so here I am, preaching again. Bear with me. Welcome to the beautiful Pebble Garden! The visibility is off the charts here and the aquatic life is thriving in huge numbers. Can you spot the tiny jellyfish here? Once you have spotted them, understand that you are not the only ones. I failed to acknowledge them at first myself, assuming them to be tiny plastic bags, distracted as I was by that beautiful shoal of jackfishes swimming right below me. After my dive buddy enlightened me, I had a momentary panic attack before he added that these tiny ones were harmless. Their stings would be almost negligible. Now chew on the fact that if I could easily mistake them for plastic bags, what happens when fish like butterfish or swordfish which feed on jellyfishes mistake a carelessly thrown plastic bag as one? . . In the two times I have been to this dive spot, the most obvious observation that I have made is the extensiveness of human impact and global warming on our oceans. Take this dive site for example. It is right next to a tiny rock called Bomrock next to Netrani island. As you can see here, the coral life forms in this dive site are almost bleached and uninhabited. This is in stark contrast to another dive site called Pebble Garden which is teeming with a variety of fishes and colourful corals. What is more curious is that Pebble Garden is shielded from the mainland by Netrani island and the water was understandably more cooler there. If this tiny fact is not indicative of humans collectively affecting our oceans for the worse, then I don’t know what is. What do you think about saving and preserving our oceans? Here I am, breathing in and out at 18 metres down under. ‘ No matter what, don’t ever hold your breath! Just keep breathing’. If scuba diving ever had a tag line, it would be this. Breathing enables the flow of air in and out of your body. Holding your breath will trap the air around you and inside your body greatly affecting your buoyancy and equalisation. Even a potential low air emergency situation requires you to slowly exhale while you are attempting a swift ascent. So I will amend Dory’s original statement, ‘Just keep breathing!’ . . In this new world we find ourselves in, one of the things that should not be affected in the future is scuba diving. There are plenty of discoveries to be made underwater. Take for instance this decaying U-boat torpedo shell, resting between these rocks 20 meters below the surface. The existence of this defunct weapon is indicative of a great sea battle which took place here in the not so distant past, most likely an Indo-Pak submarine battle if not a World War II skirmish. I have to admit, it scared the living daylights out of me, even going so far as to disrupt my neutral buoyancy. It took some doing on my part to find the courage to get a closer look, least I set it off. 😝🤿 The enormity of this discovery was surprisingly shadowed by another incredible find. More on that later.
