I love nuget and the wonder of diversity of packages in it, but I didn’t love browsing it - it was just too much work to see what a library was really offering. I decided that I wanted (and needed) a better package browser streamlined for this exploration process.

Today, I’m pleased to announce fuget.org - a new site for browsing nuget packages. It is my best attempt to build a tool to help you both discover new packages and to dig in deep to learn them once found.

This is the big feature that I’m most excited about. All the classes in your assembly are browsable - you can drill down starting from framework, to assembly, to types.

When you click a type, its members and its documentation are displayed for you. Each member’s declaration is shown along with a short summary built from the XML docs library developers lovingly write. All of the types in the declaration are cross-linked throughout the site - even between packages - to help you explore the API.

There is even an API search - just start typing in the little box to find links to whatever types or members you’re interested in. When you click a result, the documentation for that item will be shown. If you click a type whose documentation is provided by docs.microsoft.com, then you will be redirected there instead.

If the library is open source, then a Code tab will appear that lets you browse the source of the library.

API Diff

In the modern world of release many, release often library development, it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s changed between different versions of a library.

To solve that problem, fuget.org can automatically generate API diffs between any two versions of a nuget package.

It looks at the public API - all the types and all their members - in both versions of the library and shows you what was added and removed through a cute little hyperlinked diff.

I recently used this to see how Xamarin.Forms 3.0 is different from 2.5. It’s fascinating to see how libraries have matured over time.

Easy Entrypoints

The URLs of fuget.org mimic nuget.org so if you ever find yourself on nuget.org but wish you were on fuget.org, just change that “n” to an “f” and you’ll be all set.

There is also a package search at the top that gives you the same results as your favorite IDE would give you.

Lastly, the homepage remembers your most commonly visited packages and keeps a short list for you. This is all stored in your browser’s local storage and never transmitted to the server - so your obsession with JSON libraries will remain a secret.

Microsoft Sql Server Express Management Studio

I have just downloaded SQL Server 2014 Express. In the setup client included, I chose 'New SQL Server stand-alone installation or ..'. I just left everything as default.

However, at the end of the installation, I cannot find SQL Server Management Studio on my machine?

I have check the installation setting and there is no explicit setting (feature selection) to include SQL Server Management Studio?

I am using windows 8.

You need to install that separately. It isn't a part of the default SQL Server Express package.

I recently had to set up a MS SQL database on my Mac for a client project, if you ever have to do this here is a mini tutorial.

In this post I am using VMWare Fusion for virtualisation, but you could use something else and the instructions should be mostly portable.

Get a Windows VM

Go to https://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools and download a VM (Virtual Machine) for your Mac. I will be using Windows 7 (the version of IE doesn't matter).

Install the virtual machine and log in.

Get MS SQL Express with tools

As you download the Windows VM you can also download the free version or MS SQL.

At the time of writing the tiny_tds gem - the gem needed to access MS SQL - only supports MS SQL up to version 2012. So version 2014 won't work.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=29062 and download MS SQL Express 2012, make sure to get the version with tools (named something like ENUx86SQLEXPRWTx86ENU.exe).

Install MS SQL Express

If you downloaded MS SQL Express on your Mac, you will need to make it accessible to your Windows VM. If you are using Fusion you can simply drag and drop the installer to Windows.

Run the installer and just install the default components. Accept the defaults in all other screens.

Create a DB for testing

In Windows, open SQL Server Management Studio. Connect using the provided defaults, then:

Right click on Databases

Click on New Database

Add a name e.g. Test

Click OK

Enable SQL Authentication

Still in SQL Server Management Studio:

Right click on the root of the tree e.g. IE11WIN7SQEXPRESS

Select Properties

Select Security

Enable SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode

Click OK

Create a database user

Right click on Logins

Select New Login

Add a use e.g. dbuser

Select SQL Server authentication

Add a password

Set user mappings

In the same screen:

Click on User Mapping

Check the previously created DB e.g. Test

Click the .. button on the right

In the pop up window, select Browse

Check dbo and OK

Select OK again

Select db_owner on the bottom

Finally click OK

You can then close Management Studio.

Enable TCP in Express

In Windows, open SQL Server Configuration Manager. Then:

Click on SQL Server Network Configuration

Click on Protocols for SQLEXPRESS

Double click on TCP/IP on the right.

Change Enabled to Yes

Click on IP Addresses

Scroll down all the way to IPAll

Set the TCP Port e.g. 1433

Click OK

Sql Server Management Studio 2014 Free

Restart SQL (in the same window):

Click on SQL Server Services

Right click on SQL Server on the right and select Restart

We can now close SQL Server Configuration Manager.

Disable the Windows Firewall

In Windows:

Go to the Control Panel

Search for firewall and open the Windows Firewall settings

Click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off on the left

On the Home network settings, click on Turn off Windows Firewall

Click OK and close the control panel

Find the IP address for the VM

In Windows:

Click on the network icon on the bottom bar

Click on Open Network and Sharing Center

Click on the link on Connections e.g. Local Area Connection

Click on Details

Take note of the IPv4 Address e.g. 192.168.0.11 in my case, this is the IP our VM is running on

In Windows:

Open the Network and Sharing Center as in the previous step

Click on the link under Network if it says 'Public network'

Click on Home network in the pop up window

Click Next several times and then Finish

The Network should be set to 'Home network'

In the mac terminal test the connection to the Windows VM:

Note that the IP address will most likely be different on your machine.

This should give you a successful ping. If you get a timeout double check the network settings and firewall in Windows.

If you have an application that can connect to MS SQL on the Mac, I recommend testing the connection from there first before going to Rails. I am using Navicat in my case. Otherwise just skip this step.

In Navicat:

Create a new connection for MS SQL

Set the IP Address to your VM IP e.g. 192.168.0.11

Set the port as set previously e.g. 1433

Set Initial Database to the DB created previously e.g. Test

Set User Name and Password as created previously

Test the connection

Install freetds

In order to connect to MS SQL, we need to install the necessary libraries in our Mac. Install freetds using homebrew, in the Mac terminal:

Add the tiny_tds gem to your project

In your Gemfile:

Then:bundle

Set up the connection in Rails

In your database.yml, add / modify an entry for using the MS SQL db:

Take care to set the values as set previously i.e. host, port, username and password.

After The Hype - The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7

In September 2020 I purchased an Apple iPad 8th generation. The main reason was because at the time the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 was $649. In May my old iPad Air 2 (my artwork reference tablet) started getting errors that it didn't have enough RAM. So in June I had to buy a new tablet. I was going to buy another iPad. I decided the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 was a compelling alternative since it was on sale for $500. This is a review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7.

Design

The Galaxy Tab S7 follows the design language of Samsung's other Tab S tablets starting with the Tab S4. The bezels keep getting thinner and thinner. The device also keeps getting thinner and thinner. The Tab S7 in portrait measures 6.51" Wide by 9.99" Tall, and .25" Thick. It weighs a bit over 1 pound. In portrait perspective the power / sleep and the volume controls are on the right hand side. The fingerprint sensor is in the power / sleep button. At the top and bottom of the tablet are 4 AKG tuned speakers producing clear stereo audio. In the front of the tablet is the 11" TLPS TFT display (more on that in the specs section). The webcam is also on the right hand side of the display so it can be better used for video chat in landscape. Finally on the back is a dual camera setup, and the resting / charging pad for the S-Pen.

Specs

The Galaxy Tab S7 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+. This is the flagship mobile microprocessor of 2020. It has 6 GB of RAM which is plenty of memory to run any application. It is available with up to 512 GB of ultra fast UFS 3.0 storage with a Micro SD card slot. My Tab S7 has 128 GB of storage. It has WiFi 6 with Bluetooth 5 for all your non-cellular wireless communication needs. The front facing camera is 8 MP with a wide angle lense which is great for group selfies and video conferencing. The twin camera setup on the back consists of a 13 MP wide angle camera and a 5 MP ultra-wide camera. There are dual mics to capture audio. Below the camera module is the magnetic recharge pad for the S-Pen. The 11 inch display is the star of the show. It is a Quad HD+ LTPS TFT display with a resolution of 2560 X 1600 running at 120 Hz. The display has HDR10+ and Samsung's variable refresh technology. The S-Pen is the co-star of the show utilizing Wacom EMR technology. It is a low latency pen which provides for fast and accurate pen input.

User Experience

Everything about the Tab S7 is a treat to use. The OneUI 3 treatment of Android solves most of my complaints about Android on tablets. Sure some apps are blown-up phone apps. Unlike iPhone only apps that run on iPad in letterbox mode. Everything is fast and responsive. Gaming is fantastic. Genshin Impact runs well at medium quality. I have had problems with Sonic CD and Dimension Wars 3 running too fast due to the 120Hz refresh rate. Turning off Variable Refresh solves the problem. Consuming content is great. The display is beautiful, and the quad speaker setup immerses you in your media. Artwork and design production with the Tab S7 is great. The S-Pen is responsive and capable, and it is a joy to work with in Clip Studio Paint, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Working in Microsoft OneNote, and marking up edits in Acrobat is also a great experience. There are some gaps in the various app stores, but the lack of those apps isn't a deal breaker. The images from the rear cameras are fine. I wouldn't carry this tablet as a camera, but they work fine in a pinch. The front camera is great for video meetings via Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Voice pickup by the mics are more than adequate, ensuring that you will be heard loud and clear.

Galaxy Tab S7 Vs. 8th Gen iPad

At $649 the Tab S7 is considered way more expensive than the $329 Apple iPad. I, however, am not convinced. At the $649 price point the Tab S7 is competitively priced.

The base model Tab S7 has 128 GB of storage. To get an iPad with 128 GB the price would need to increase to $429. The Tab S7 has the S-Pen included. The Apple Pencil costs an extra $100. This brings the 8th Gen iPad with 128 GB of storage and an Apple Pencil to the price of $529. That is a $120 price difference. On top of that the Tab S7 is often on sale for around $500.

On paper the iPad 8th generation seems like a great device. In use it even seems perfect. The user experience is refined, leaving no doubt as to how to operate it. The app store is the best around. It even has access to Photoshop and Illustrator. Regretfully, it's also a walled garden. You can only purchase apps from the Apple App Store.

The Tab S7 can have apps from several app stores like Google Play and Amazon. You can even install apps from a web browser, the cloud, or a USB drive. You can also develop and install your own apps. Something you can't do on any iPad without a developer account and a $99 fee.

The tab S7's Qualcomm 865+ (973 Single, 3117 Multi) is faster than Apple's A12 (1109 Single, 2065 Multi) in multi-core. The Tab S7 has more memory with 6 GB RAM versus the iPad's 3 GB of RAM. The Galaxy Tab S7 has expandable storage through a Micro SD card slot. The iPad only has integrated storage. The Tab S7 has a larger, better display with a higher resolution, HDR10, and variable refresh up to 120 Hz. The Tab S7 also has the ability to connect USB-C devices like input devices, printers, and USB-C drives. Even pointing out the lackluster app stores on Android, the other features dwarf the iPad.

The Tab S7 is also competitive when comparing it to the faster more expensive current iPad Air. It may be faster, but with an Apple Pencil the 64 GB model is $729. With 256 GB of storage the price rises to $780. The iPad Air does have a USB-C port. It's still lacking Micro SD card expansion, and a 120Hz HDR10 display though. There are a lot of complaints about Apple's Files app to transfer files between the iPad and devices. In this case the Tab S7 wins on price because though it is slower, it still has a better feature set.

I am not going to talk about the Apple Pencil. With Apple's pencil, and Wacom's EMR it's all about the user's personal experiences. In my case my familiarity with Wacom's EMR has been great. With AES based pens like Microsoft's N-Trig, and the Apple's pencil I find them lacking.

Conclusion

It's actually kind of odd. Even though I am not an Apple Fan Boy anymore, I am an iPad fan. The reality is that the Tab S7 is better than the 8th Gen iPad, and just enough better than the Apple iPad Air in my opinion. Apple lost this round. Wow, It was a little hard to say that. It will be interesting to see what the 9th gen iPad, 5th Gen iPad Air, and Samsung's Tab S8 have in store for us. It should be an interesting 2nd half of 2021
